[Goanet] Goanet: Spain's Stolen Babies: When Nuns Took Babies from Parents
We are all aware that illegal and unofficial sale / adoption of babies are being done not only in Goa but all over the country. However, may I ask Stephen whether it is being done by Nuns in collaboration with Catholic Hospitals and with force / deceit? Regards, Marshall *Subject says " parents" i.e Nuns took babies from parents.* > Who are the parents? In this case they are unwed mother. Only single parent is affected and not parents as father who is unofficial unknown. > This kind of taking babies is a common issue or practice in Goa, not only in Salazar's time but still it continues now, and I know that babies can be taken directly from certain Hospitals or else they are made to disappear from the Hospital and given to the affluent people/families to take them home or even these babies are taken to other states. It is nothing new and as long as there is no complain, these babies either are sold or given with some declaration so that these babies are not ill treated. I know there are plenty of cases here in Goa that such babies are been adopted and they are well taken care with good education etc.etc This is generally taking place with those parents who do not have any issues. > > Stephen Dias > Dona Paula

[Goanet] REMEMBERING RIBANDAR’S BUDDING MUSICIAN SELWYN PEREIRA
Today on his 16th death anniversary fond memories of Selwyn Pereira, a jewel, our Ribandar lost so early, at a very tender age of just 29 in a most tragic accident at Kanpur. Selwyn Pereira had started his own band when he was just 10 years old and named it "Civilians". He later played for one of Goa's top bands the "Big City Band” and moved on to join as a keyboardist playing for Remo Fernandes’s "The Microwave Papadams". Remembering the always ever so cheerful, warm hearted and very jovial Selwyn Pereira who was always ready to help one and all. Extremely civil in his conduct, the very down to earth with no ego, Selwyn was always ever so humble. Besides being a very budding musician, he was an outstanding human being always caring and who never stopped smiling. [Goanet] LANGUAGE ISSUE
I like to bring the following points:Yesterday evening when I dialed 1912reg. electrical problems, I was surprised to note the difference when we were earlierdialing 1912 we were able to understand the language either in English orKonkani, but now the system has changed, now there are 3 language options: onein Marathi, Hindi, and English for selection of Language. I chose English as Iam comfortable to understand and clear the problems faced by consumer. Afterselecting the language, I was further given 3 options:- when I selected the 2ndoption from the tape recorded message, it asked for consumer no. with 12 digitsbut on checking the bill the consumer no. does not have 12 digits but consumer i.d. is given. Then it kept on repeating for some time, finally I was told I will be directedto the customer representative who will speak to me to clear the doubt. Thecustomer rep. came when I took the option of English and he talked with meMarathi instead of English though I used option in Englsih but since I am notcomfortable in Marathi but could understand and so I replied in Konkani. Hesaid voice is not clear and disconnected the line. I thought it must be some networkproblem and so again I dialed the Helpline and answered in Konkani. Again hedisconnected the second time. At least for me I can understand little bit ofMarathi but what about other Goans who have never learned Marathi besides theirown Mother tongue Konkani.Earlier while in Bombay, I couldnot well versed in Marathi well but when I spoke all others around wouldridicule me as I did not have proper grasp of the Marathi language. But now when I am in Goa, I talked in Konkani believingit is an official language of Goa and is much easier to pick up.I understand that about 400electrical line helpers have got jobs though many of them beingMigrants but our locals are neglected as they have no say and are not backed by the dual minded influentialpoliticians. As all of us know our ancestralheritage of Konkani is talked in our Society as this language makes nodistinction irrespective of community, race, colour etc. The Official languageof Konkani is spoken in our society from grassroots level and being ourproperty it can be verified with documentary facts. If Konkani today getsneglected for the sake of Marathi, our sentimental traditional language willnever develop and will have no importance in any level, be it any level Government or academic etc. for the peaceful harmony of Goa. Or else it will dry out if neglected by ourwell versed influential politicians around the State of Goa. As our well verseddual minded politicians know how to misguide the language issue by giving us moreabout statistics of journalists, poets, writers etc., who have neglected our traditionallanguage of Kokani. The roadmap of ourlanguage is Konkani and its History is deeprooted in our culture. Its purpose will be defeated as Official Language if itis not used in official purpose and it would lead to deletion of thishistorical ancient traditional language Kokani in our everyday life. Also Iunderstand that Konkani is Indo Aryan Language. We all respect the language of Marathi butthe cunning master politicians do not respect our Konkani Language and misguideGoans.Today our Central Government has done lot of good like products MAKEIN INDA and so now INDIAN ENGLISH LANGUAGE IS MADE IN INDIA also. I cantunderstand why the avaricious dual minded politicians especially in Goa aretrying their best to gain a POLITICAL mileage before elections and they are notbacking INDIAN ENGLISH LANGAUGE AS MADE IN INDIA. Otherwise we make everyproduct to be in Made in India successfully forgetting our Indian English. Also LED LIGHT BULBS which waspurchased for Rs.25.00 each in June was not working and so I called Customercare in Delhi who directed me talk to customer care in Goa. Last month whenthey came to Goa , Electricity Dept., I showed the faulty LED bulb, they gave me replacement but now we noticedthat other 2 bulbs starts blinking in the night but other tubelights do notblink. I thought earlier it was voltage problem but if it was voltage issue, Idon’t understand why the other tubelights are not blinking. Inspite of callingthe customercare in Goa who does not bother to respond which was given as772208387. It is a loss for me and gain for the company who supplied LED BULBS toGoa.Today Vidharba wants to carvetheir own State away from Maharashtradue to various factors like neglect of development in that State but it isstrongly opposed by the Opposition Lobby who are stopping the freedom rights of people of Vidharbha.Dont you agree that this languageof Konkani will be forgotten and neglected if Marathi is given more importance than our traditional mother tongue Konkani. I am sure it can develop if notneglected but otherwise it will create differences in minds of Goan youth reg.Language in future. With regards, Celes
[Goanet] why are we born
Why ARE WE BORN/? We are born to die , or reincarnate and yet death cannot be accepted so sweetly, Death causes great pain, sufferings to the near and dear ones. words are poor comforters, Only those who loose their loved ones cannot get over it, we ruminate over all the wonderful qualities, gifts of the person and how they touched us personally and intimately, There is no elaboration on the defects and shortcomings, as death puts them into oblivion. We will not see, hear, talk and touch him any more, and that rattles us the most The death of the person creates a vacuum in our hearts and mind, The nearness to the dead person cause agony If the person is young we say that those whom God loves die young.. when elderly person passes away, it is understood that he has lived his life When an young child is lost to the fangs of cruel death, we lament bitterly about creator not being just and fair, When a sick person dies, we feel it death is the biggest relief and leveller When people die suddenly in accident, incurable disease our pain is increased many fold .Some want others to die so that they can benefit materially through inheritance , promotion etc, when people commit suicides , we can neither appreciate or understand their predicament and we are apt to blame their decisions as cowardly Our sympathy and concerns are fiery, at brutal murders,Those that are hanged for crimes against humanity gives us solace , consolation,as if to say that wrong is remedied somehow We never want to think that the same death awaits us, but when we are young it is an illusion The poem DASH between life and death is very meaningful, How long is the dash, thick a line, or dotted dash. The quality of life we live is all that matters to every one Does death make us reflect or introspect about our behaviours, attitudes envies, jealousies, egos strengths and weakness and drive us to reform and adjust, We never know the span of life awaiting us and still we will live as if the death is never on our agenda We pity children left without the mother or the bread winner, but death separating us from loved ones is no different in pain and sufferings What would be our reaction when death is certain and nearly predictable? would be your priority if death was to come within a week, month, year, hour or a day We have all the questions of why, what , how, when but there will be never be the answer that really satisfies us completely, We console ourselves rationalising, reasoning, adjustments, projecting reconciling to the inevitable, spiritual dimensions of faith and belief The will of the creator has to be accepted absolutely and unequivocally. Do we challenge the discretations of garderner to pluck some flowers, leave others, or the farmer plucking the products at different stages for different purposes and yet leaving some on the tree.?Those who believe in life after death, resurrections may derive spiritual strength and those who do not believe are lost unto themselves and mentally their purpose and peace is shattered The dead person is gift not only to the family, but also to the friends, neighbours community and the community at large Let us therefore build a monument to the departed loved one in our hearts and minds,.Rituals, prayers, and worldly ways help us to reduce our loss and pains Nelson Lopes Chinchinim

MarshallWhat you have written relates to the known, expected and beneficial Placement of Newborns who their mothers did not want - for more than one reason. They, likely, would have been aborted or abandoned otherwise. What Roland has negligently (IMHO) speculated about is the Stealing of these babies. It is worth waiting for Roland to provide evidence (even based on a lower standard ie Preponderance), that such Theft was going on in Goa during the Salazar era. jc On 18 September 2016 at 05:33, Marshall Mendonzawrote: > I wonder how fair and appropriate it is to judge social happenings of 75 > years ago with today's social norms. Yes, this is the father (late Pampu Shirodkar, the first Speaker of the Goa Assembly, who would have probably become chief minister of Goa if Bandodkar didn't) of the ex-Director of Archives (Dr Prakashchandra P Shirodkar, now in Bangalore). >From what the latter told me on phone, this book was written by his dad while he was still in jail. In those times, the main written languages in Goa were Portuguese and Marathi. So, I guess, it made sense from him to translate a book by Tilak from Marathi into Portuguese, both languages he must have known well. It might have been done in the 1950s. If he had done it today, the choice of languages would have obviously been different. (These days, I'm trying my hand at Portuguese-to-English simple translations, despite my obvious handicaps.) I understand that Dr Shirodkar has himself been facing health issues, and he's trying his best to publish some of his late father's unpublished manuscripts, together with help from the family. As an aside, Dr Shirodkar's sister is Dr Walke, a popular doctor who has served in Saligao (along with her late husband) for the past 4-5 decades now. His younger brother, Prasanna, has been a long-time member of the editorial desk of the Gomantak Times, probably since its founding in 1987. (Am subject to correction over the dates specially.) My dad played violin in one of the Bombay orchestras. and I think it was the Bombay Chamber Orchestra, if I remember correctly as I was young when he took me to attend the concert, mostly at the Jehangir Hall in Wodehouse. Re: [Goanet] Spain's Stolen Babies: When Nuns Took Babies From Parents
From: Roland Re: [Goanet] Spain's Stolen Babies: When Nuns Took Babies All it took there was the might and power of the Catholic Church to drown out all the questioners and in Goa there was also the prospect of the local 'Quartels'. The influence of the church in Spain or Goa during Franco or Salazar was not to be trifled with. GL responds: So exactly what did you want the unwed pregnant mothers to do? Have a back alley abortion like millions of unwed mothers do today? Is that holocaust better? And if the young girl has the baby? In centuries gone by, unwed mothers with babies were even ostracized by their own parents and families. Look at the number of orphanages today where babies are brought to by their parents on grandparents for adoption. Perhaps Roland as a very generous fellow (and others interested in this subject) should support one of these orphanages. Please google "Homes of Hope India". We are talking about historical facts without putting it in context - then or now Regards, GL
