[Goanet-News] NAZI-GATE: GUYS, IT’S TIME W E ‘KILLED’ JOHANN BACH -- PENPRICKS

*NAZI GATE: GUYS, IT'S TIME WE 'KILLED' JOHANN BACH *
*
WHEN THE MEDIA WENT 'BACH'ING UP THE WRONG TREE*
We begin with this post with a premise, so that some of those readers who
have any seditionist, trans-nation conspiracy notions about this blog, shed
these ideas before we move forward.

Nowadays the charge of sedition is as commonplace as a tavern on a Goan
street.
As journalists, we are ashamed at the way the Indian media reported the two
most sensational murders in recent times. These tragedies virtually grabbed
the attention of Western and Northern regions of India. Its the murders of
Scarlett Keeling at Anjuna, Goa and Arushi Talwar in NOIDA, near Delhi we
are talking about.

[Goanet-News] COMMENT: Stories that are too good to check (Siddharth Varadarajan, in The Hindu)

Stories that are too good to check

Siddharth Varadarajan

Several Indian newspapers fell victim to a hoax about the arrest
of a supposed Nazi war criminal. Apart from the media's alarming
ignorance, the episode also reveals our fascination for
unconfirmed news from 'intelligence' sources.

On Sunday, an email message from 'Hamman Smit,' press officer from
'Perus Narpk' from Shede Road in Berlin arrived in the inbox of
several journalists in Goa and Bangalore. The message identified
'Perus Narpk' as the intelligence wing of the German Chancellor's
core (sic) and claimed credit for the arrest on the
Karanataka-Goa border of a fugitive Nazi war criminal named Johann
Bach who was responsible for the killing of 12,000 Jews in the
'Marsha Tikash Whanaab' concentration camp. The email contained a
press release full of outlandish details about the operation,
including the claim that the octogenarian Bach had revealed his
identity to a holidaying Israeli couple during a rave party in
Goa, and had stolen an 18th century piano from a museum in 'East
Berlin' which he was trying to sell through a local newspaper.
Suggestive clues

The email was literally full of clues suggesting it was a hoax.
The author revealed he was hamming, his office was on 'Shady'
road and the rather un-Germanic 'Perus Narpk' was an anagram for
'Super Prank.' Even if the journalists did not know there was no
concentration camp with the name 'Marsha Tikash Whanaab,' a quick
search on the Internet might have at least triggered a warning
light. And yet, a number of hacks and their editors rushed to
print with this sensational story without bothering to check any
of its hilarious details.

The Telegraph ran the story on Monday under the headline Goa
piano 'thief' found to be Nazi war fugitive. It quoted
Intelligence Bureau officials saying that Mr. Bach had come to
India via Argentina, Bulgaria and Canada. The story was
accompanied by a world map showing how Mr. Bach crisscrossed the
world before ending up in Goa. The word 'unconfirmed' was inserted
parenthetically next to Yemen, suggesting that the newspaper had
confirmed all other aspects of the story.

And how was this terrible criminal caught? The newspaper provided
this breathless account: Goa's beaches are frequented by young
Israeli couples, most of them seeking leisure after a term of
compulsory military service in their country. Bach, mistaking the
couple for Americans, told them he had 'managed' a Nazi
concentration camp during the war. The German authorities put two
and two together when they realised that the museum from where the
piano was stolen was located close to a concentration camp in
Berlin. They already knew that the camp was run by a young man
named Bach, who was never caught after the war.

The Indian Express went one step ahead of its competitors with an
exclusive detail, noting in its headline that the Nazi war
criminal had already been airlifted to Berlin. Clearly, if the
story was too good for journalists to check, it was too good for
the police to deny: Though local police and intelligence agencies
in Karnataka said they were 'unaware' of the operation, the
Express noted, Karnataka Additional DGP for Intelligence Shankar
Bidari said his office had received information of the arrest on
Saturday morning. He also said the alleged war criminal had been
moved to Germany. The only saving grace in the newspaper's
account was its attempt to cross-check the story with the German
authorities: Officials at the German embassy, when contacted,
said they had received no information of the arrest in Goa.

The Deccan Herald, which had all the usual details, also informed
its readers that the arrested Nazi was a brilliant musician like
his illustrious 18th Century namesake and later rose high in
the Nazi hierarchy. The newspaper also said that Mr. Bach's
whereabouts have been kept a secret and that he would be put on
trial at the International Court of Justice, The Hague.
Rediff.com complained about the unhelpful attitude of the Indian
police. Although so much information regarding Bach has
surfaced, it wrote, both the Karnataka and Goa police continue
to opt for the denial mode… The Belgaum police, when questioned as
to what Bach was doing in the jungles at Khanapur, said they were
unaware of any such arrest.

This brilliant hoax was the handiwork of 'Penpricks' a
journalists' collective in Goa whose blog, penpricks.blogspot.com,
is dedicated to discovering the rotund flanks and the shaggy
underbelly of the Goan media. And of course, the rare honest rib.
One of its more celebrated exposes was the debunking of a story
run by CNN-IBN about the Russian mafia taking over land in Goa.
Penpricks also criticised The Herald for offering to strike a deal
for the sale of lead editorials after it posed as a business house
interested in positive coverage.

But even if the immediate target of Penpricks was the Goan media,
it has

[Goanet] Taleigao Chess Academys reply to Sameer Salgaocar President Goa State Chess Association(GCSA).NT June 30

2008-07-01 Thread Sanjay Barve
To

The Editor,
The Navhindtimes,

Panaji-Goa

June 30, 2008

Sir,

*This is in response to letter published in your daily on Monday 30th June
2008 page 17 of Sameer Salgaocar President Goa State Chess
Association(GCSA). We would be obliged if you publish it in right spirit.*

**

*
*

Cronology of events:

   1. Taleigao Chess Academy Sports Club (TCA) is registered under Societies
Act 1860 Reg. No 553/GOA/2007 with 23 members.
   2. TCA had submitted a Bank of India Cheque No. 072876 dt. April 1 2008
for Rs.300/- along with forwarding letter dt.05/04/08 being affiliation fee.

   3. We have received receipt of the same No.2631 dt. 12/05/08 which
clearly says that Club affiliation fee for 2008-09.
   4. As per past record GSCA does not issue any separate communication for
   affiliation.
   5. Our Ex. Secretary Shrikant Barve tendered his resignation on May 20
2008 attached along with a copy of Show Cause Notice received by him from
All India Chess Association dt. 16/05/08 which states that he has been
suspended with effect from 27/03/08 pending inquiry.
   6. All India Chess Federation or Goa State Chess Association has not
informed TCA about suspension of TCA Secretary from 27/03/08 nor had asked
TCA for status of Shrikant Barve in TCA.
   7. From March 27 2008 to June 15 2008 GSCA Executive Body meeting was
held on April 6 at Bambolim, May 27 at Zambaulim, June 1 at Panaji and June
   15 at Margao.
   8. On June 6th 2008 TCA wrote to GSCA a letter (copy attached) informing
about future programs but important topic was * Sabotaging of T.C.A.'s T.
Purushottam Special Chess Coaching Camp for Goan Players. *

We have an unfortunate experience to narrate to you which we would request
you to note and to take action. As you are aware, in the interest of Goan
chess, we have been conducting special chess coaching programs by inviting
good chess players / coaches from outside Goa to impart training to our
talented young Goan chess players Shri O. T. Anilkumar (Kerala State
Champion ) and Shri B.S.Shivanand (Karnataka State Champion and National A
player) are among those who have come to Taleigao Chess Academy several
times over the past one year and help Goan children to upgrade their chess
skills. Some of Goa's best young players have benefited from their guidance
as can be evidenced from their results.

In the same spirit we had invited T. Purushothaman (ELO Rating 2290) Andhra
Pradesh State Champion in 2006 to conduct a Special Coaching camp from May
28 to June 3, 2008.. He had confirmed his agreement to come to Goa to
conduct this camp.

But to our surprise we received a phone call just a week before the
scheduled camp pleading his inability to come. The following is the email he
sent us subsequently:

*Dear Mr. Barve,*

*After thinking about the issue and consulting with my parents, I have
decided that it is better that I cancel my trip, especially after receiving
calls from delegates of the AICF. I am sorry if this decision of mine causes
inconvenience to you.*

*Yours Sincerely,*

*Purushothaman.*

The statement by Shri Purushothaman that he was canceling his trip, after
receiving calls from delegates of the AICF, saddened us. Instead of
offering us their support, the AICF wants to sabotage the activities of
T.C.A.. As you are aware, some of the best young Indian chess players
including double world U-8 Gold medalist Ivana Furtado

were groomed at T.C.A.

As a member of the Goa State Chess Association, we request you to take up
the matter at every forum available to stop this disgraceful attempt of the
AICF to stall the progress of Goan chess. Kindly place this matter on the
agenda of the forthcoming Executive body as well as General Body of G.S.C.A.
We would specially like the President of G.S.C.A Mr. Sameer Salgaonkar who
is also Vice-President of A.I.C.F. to use his influence to counter the
sinister designs of the A.I.C.F.

This matter is of the utmost importance as in order to give good chess
guidance to Goan chess players before National B which is to be held in Goa
from September 15 2008 T.C.A. wishes to invite and conduct many more special
chess coaching programs. This must not be further sabotaged by the A.I.C.F.

   1. TCA has received two separate Registered Letters from GSCA both dt.
20/06/08 along with our cheque and letter. These letter states that
Returning herewith the cheque for Rs.300/- at it is decided in the EBM of
GSCA held at Margao on June 15 that the registration of Taleigao Chess
Academy will not be renewed until Shri shrikant Barve, their Secretary
cleared of all charges by All India Chess Federation who has been suspended
from all chess activities pending enquiry.
   2. Copy of the Press release of TCA On 24th June 2008 is attached. Topic
of TCA's Press conference was *The Right Move II Career in
   Sports-National G* Taleigao chess Academy

[Goanet] Bigotry on goanet - and Miguel Braganza

When one points a finger at someone else, there are about three fingers that
point back.

With the definition provided, one needs to look at oneself to know if one is a
bigot.

Trying to look for others who are bigots, may in itself be an act of bigotry,
because it implies ones desire to label others as unreasonable or wicked.

Thanks Anil for providing the definition of bigot.  It looks like the
definition has opened a 'can of worms'.  Kudos to those who are doing a bit of
soul-searching.  Perhaps after-all Santosh is right?  The definition of 'Bigot'
was not created / invented by Anil.  Let us not shoot the messenger.

--- Santosh Helekar

I cannot tell who on Goanet is not a bigot according to those dictionary
definitions.

--- Anil Desai

Bigot - A person who regards his own faith and views in matters of religion
as unquestionably right, and any belief or opinion opposed to or
differing from them as unreasonable or wicked.

In an extended sense, a person who is intolerant of opinions which conflict
with his own, as in politics or morals; one obstinately and blindly devoted to
his own church, party, belief, or opinion.

[Goanet] Fiscal health, tax gorillas and need for customised stats

2008-07-01 Thread Philip Thomas
Today's TOI has a story titled Meerut among top tax paying cities. It now
occupies 9th place among such cities in India. The 8 biggies are 1. Mumbai
(Rs 115K crores 2. Delhi Rs 47K crores 3. Bangalore 4. Chennai 5. Hyderabad
6. Pune 7. Kolkata 8. Ahmedabad. Chandigarh may be 10th. Other cities cited
are Jaipur, Bhopal, Kochi and Bubaneshwar.

It is not known where Goa would figure in this list. Probably in the top 15.
First of all it would be necessary to eliminate padding like FX receipts
from tourism, iron ore exports, NRG remittances etc. It might then be of the
order of 3-4K crores. No ready made lists including Goa would be available
since it is neither a proper state nor a proper city. There is a need to
develop customised lists for planning purposes where Goa figures as a
city.

Response:

Dear Selma,

Read my post again. I will give you a clue. The evidence is there in his
comment on Rajan's religious affiliation. If you do not understand it, ask
Miguel. I am sure he will be only too pleased to explain how offensive he
wanted to be to Rajan and not thousands but millions of other worshippers of

Quite frankly, his religious bigotry does not bother me so much. That is a
fairly common currency in almost all religions, hinduism included. His
bigoted writings on socio-political issues do bother me.

[Goanet] Margao needs peace with freedom and justice

2008-07-01 Thread Vidyadhar Gadgil
Herald, 30 June 2008

Margao needs peace with freedom and justice

by Ranjan Solomon

The incidents of last week involving mainly the Bajrang Dal and
its members were unfortunate but should come as no surprise. It
was clear for many months that the Rumdamol Housing Board was on
the boil and that violence would break at any moment. Much like
what happened in Sanvordem two years ago, the Bajrang Dal has been
creating situations on-the-ground designed to break the peace and
construct a communal conflict, and then follow that up by creating
pretexts to blame it all on the Muslim population.

What is surprising is that the government has watched all of this
unfolding as if in a coma. Warnings were been issued to the
government that the situation is tense and that conflict could
break out at any time were met with stubborn indifference.

Just a little under two months ago, the Hindu Janajagruti Samiti
organized a major rally in Margao – an event designed and geared
to promote hatred of the minority communities and, at which, the
language of hate and division flowed in public. Citizens concerned
for peace and communal harmony who attended the meeting out of
curiosity came away shocked and worried.

At the very entrance to the rally, people were first led through
an exhibition of posters, audio-visuals, and literature – each
geared to create anti-minority feelings and hate. These were seeds
of conflict, not, as the organizers claimed, a way of protecting
the Hindu Dharma.

Many who attended the meeting and read reports about it were
appalled by the militant and virtually fascist language used by
most of the speakers. Open threats were issued to the minorities
and speakers even challenged law enforcement authorities to stop
illegalities they were openly committing, the illegal temple in
Rumdamol being one of them.

The closure of Margao on Friday evening and on Saturday was
totally unjustified. A newspaper report has this to say:
Activists of the Bajrang Dal thereafter went around the
commercial town, asking shopkeepers to shut their
establishments and join the street protests. Shops and vehicles
belonging to a minority community were singled out and damaged...

The government should have acted even more firmly by providing
protection to shopkeepers, especially the Muslim traders whose
shops were attacked. The entire business community’s losses are
yet to be counted.

Traders estimate losses in business of at least two crores while
in the market place fruit and vegetable sellers coupled with
eateries and restaurants, fish and meat traders would account for
losses in the range of one crore and above. Some two thousand or
more daily wage earners on whom Margao business heavily relies
probably went to bed hungry.

To succumb to the anarchy which the Bajrang Dal let lose sets a
dangerous precedent. A RSS activist quite openly announced: Let
those who oppose us know that what they have witnessed is this is
just the trailer; the real movie is soon to follow!

The attempt of the Collector to bring together a Peace Meeting of
people of different communities while laudable in intent, does not
show any vision or understanding of what the underlying problems
are. People with serious intention to promote dialogue and seek
solutions are skeptical about the nature and constitution of the
group. Several of the people invited to the meeting were people
whose views are coloured by extreme political views. There is also
concern that the formation of the group may just be an eye wash on
the part of the government to postpone real solutions to real
problems.

Above all, it is hard to imagine a situation where a Muslim or
Christian can stand up and speak the truth in the open about the
activities of the Bajrang Dal without being marked out and having
to live under threat from then onwards. Citizens who went to seek
information under the RTI about the legal status of the temple
recently constructed in Rumdamol were met with threats and
intimidation. Under such circumstances, the Peace Committee of the
Collector has faltered even at its very origins.

Rumdamol has been on the boil for a long time now. Muslims in
the area have expressed fear for their lives, their families, and
businesses. The housing Board colony with a large minority
settlement had been targeted several times, with majority groups
assembling around the colony, several times in the
past.

The government despite being aware of the situation has been a
mute spectator. Even after the erection of the unauthorized temple
and the threats that followed to those who questioned its
legality, the government has done little by way of substance to
rectify the situation.

Peace must return to Margao, and, indeed to Goa. A genuine peace,
however, cannot be achieved under the barrel of the gun or under
police protection. Peace in its true sense will prevail only when
citizens together work to achieve it through mutual cooperation.
What is called for – and is very urgent - is a peace

violence is committed against them by males, whether from within or outside the

[Goanet] Goa Su-Raj Party condemn attack on Press in Advalpal

2008-07-01 Thread sebastian Rodrigues

This is to express deepest condemnation of the attack on section of Press
including journalists from Herald and HCN at Advalpal Gram Sabha last Sunday
June 29, 2008. They were violently driven away from the Gram Sabha from there.
Village Sarpanch and mining companies are targeting Journalists in order carry
forward their shoddy deals.

This is a third instance of attack on Freedom of Speech and Expression within a
fortnight. Earlier two instances includes when I was tagged as naxal on June
19, 2008 by Goa leader of the Opposition and two blogs that I write to were
targeted. Then during the Margao Eve teasing violence a journalist Komarpant
was violently targeted by State police force and seriously injured on June 27,
2008.

Freedom of Press is a Fundamental Right that cannot be compromised under any
circumstances. It is time for People of Goa to rally together in defence of
Freedom of Press that has been guaranteed under Article 19.

[Goanet] The Road ahead for Digambar Kamat

2008-07-01 Thread Aires Rodrigues
Over a year in office and Chief Minister Digambar Kamat has still not been
able to complete the cabinet cobbling. With the Babush Monseratte induction
still on hold and the stripping of Finance and Home portfolios from the
incumbents in limbo the political uncertainty hovering over Goa looms large.

What is surprising is that the Chief Minister continues to be feted and so
was he recently by the Margao block of his party. They vowed to ensure
Digambar Kamat's stability despite not a single Minister attending that
felicitation. Digambar Kamat who was groomed in RSS disciplined cadres has
to now put up with the Congress Party that thrives on indiscipline,
infighting and factionalism. The fierce feud between Francisco Sardinha and
Shantaram Naik has kept denying Goa a berth in the Union cabinet.

While the Aam Aadmi suffers from an administration that is grounded,
Digambar Kamat seems to have decided to drag on in office and hopefully
complete his term in the footsteps of Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh.

The Chief Minister has had to walk a tight rope with some Ministers within
his cabinet not seeing eye to eye. Time and again the Chief Minister has had
to diffuse what would have been virtual in-camera bull fights. Infact the
brunt and humiliation he has had to face from his own party men and allies
has been a bigger threat than the official opposition, the Bharatiya Janata
Party.

With so many clamoring for Ministerial berths and all eyeing exclusively the
plum lucrative portfolios, it only confirms that they have not embarked on a
mission to serve the people but to help themselves and make the best while
it lasts.

Chief Minister Digambar Kamat might have started his innings on a wrong foot
astutely dodging the induction of Victoria Fernandes in the cabinet by
re-assuring her of all round development in her constituency. The real issue
was the non-representation of the lone lady MLA in the cabinet as one does
not have to be a Sarpanch or MLA or even a Minister to nurse the
constituency. That followed by tantrums Mrs Victoria Fernandes fasted,
fainted and the ensuing drama at the Vintage hospital including the alleged
invigorating transfusion of vitamin 'M' is now all history.

While Digambar continues his visits to the Gods, he should expeditiously
complete the dishing out of all posts and positions so that he can get down
cracking on some of the serious issues confronting Goa and Goans.

The Chief Minister being a builder himself should not have headed the Task
force set up to prepare Goa's new regional plan. He should now ensure that
it is prepared in utmost transparency and in consultation with all
concerned.

We need to have Goa's planned development with an environmental vision by
first improving Goa's crumbling basic infrastructure while tackling serious
issues like garbage and vehicle parking in cities on a top priority. The
Planning and Development authorities (PDA's) need to be scrapped and
facilitate the planning work by assigning a Town Planner to sit at every
Municipality. There is an urgent need to enact necessary amendments to the
Town Country Planning Act to ensure that land use changes are not
manipulated at the whims and fancies of those in authority

Goa urgently needs to set up a Lokayukta to ensure public accountability
of Ministers including the Chief Minister, Members of the Legislative
Assembly, Municipal Councilors, and the Chairman, Vice Chairman, Managing
Director and Members of Boards, which are subject to the control of the
Government.

To protect the interests of Goa's educated unemployed Government should
revert the retirement age of government employees to 58 and revoke the
blatant extensions in service and contract appointments being given to
retired government officers. To ensure transparency in recruitment of
government staff the selection process has to be handled by the Goa Public
Service Commission. All government jobs should go only to people of Goan
origin and 80% jobs in private and other organizations for people who are
domiciled in Goa for at least 25 years.

Corporations created over the years for political expediency must be wound
up and the needed Government Corporations should be headed not by
politicians but experts in the field related to the subject matter of the
Corporation.

Independence of the police force is a must and Ministers MLA's should
stop controlling police stations. There has to be a check on corruption,
indiscipline and abuse of authority in Government offices. Information
sought under the Right of Information Act has to be made more accessible to
the public

Starting with Margao the Chief Minister must look into the illegal migrant
vote banks set up in most constituencies. All bogus voters from the
electoral rolls of Goa need to be deleted as they are existing voters in
their parent state too.

There is need of a law to regulate sale of land to persons not of Goan
origin. Communidade land has to be protected for the purpose it was

Sir,

*Subject : Wendell please help preserve Goas' peaceful fabric*

I refer to the article in your Sunday magazine dated 29th June titled
' *Iniquitous
Inquisition* ' wherein excerpts of the interview conducted by Wendell
Rodrigues with Richard Zimmler were published. The Inquisition which is a
sad part of the medieval ages was mainly used in Europe especially to
curtail traitors and heretics who were undermining the rulers whose subjects
were victims to the atrocities committed by the marauding armies of the
Turks and Vandal conquerors especially after the Constantinople fiasco . The
same methods were applied in every colony to contain rebellious attitude .

The inquisition in Goa if ever it was held was for a brief period to
contain mainly collaborators and those collaborating with the British and
Dutch forces who had their eye on Goa because of its strategic location on
the Arabian Sea coast. Zimmlers' assumption that 300 temples were razed by
the Portuguese is absurd given the fact that temples flourished even in
main cities like Panjim ,and Margao during the height of the Portuguese
Rule. If some of the people themselves embraced the new faith and decided to
worship in churches has nothing to do with the inquisition. People even
followed certain traditions and customs of old for sentimental reasons and
didnt do away with their way of life completely .For example some people
till today believe in the age old caste system , the communidade system is
followed everywhere , celebration of certain feasts etc.

Richard Zimmler is trying to create a sensation and negative publicity so
that his book will sell . If we go by his teachings then perhaps we will see
mistakes committed by every race and country. For example the massacre of
Red - Indians , men , women and children by the Mormons and Jews in the
infamous Utah Valley ( Salt Lake City ) and in certain States of the US and
the subsequent mass graves were wiped out of history by Richard Nixon to
please the American Jewish community . The planned killing of innocent
Palestinians by the Israelis ,etc are to be best forgotten if one has to
move along. Can we generalise and condemn all the German citizens for the
holocaust ? If we want peace we must forgive and move ahead.

I appeal to Wendell not to give publicity to such elements like Zimmler who
want to rake up unnecessary and useless historical facts or fictions as they
will provide fodder to those elements just waiting to create rift in Goa on
communal lines and disturb the once peaceful fabric of our society. We
have to move ahead together to create a strong and united Goa. Viva Goa !

[Goanet] Benefits of Aloe Vera

2008-07-01 Thread [Edu's World]
You use it when you have sunburn, it is said to be act as a coolant to the
skin when it burns. It is also great for the skin condition eczema.
Researchers believe that the sap that comes from the actual Aloe Vera plant
can reduce inflammation. Researchers do find that cuts and bruises that are
treated with Aloe Vera gel from the drug store heal faster than if you put a
antibiotic ointment on it.

The Mucoplysaccarides in the gel of the leaf of the plant is said to have
the most healing benefits of the Aloe Vera. Aloe Vera is also a key
ingredient in many toiletry products. You will find aloe in skin
moisturizers, soaps, sunscreens, lotion and shampoos. The Aloe Vera gel is
used mostly in dry skin conditions, like eczema, sunburn and rough dry skin
due to cold weather.

Aloe Vera is very useful in the medicinal way, it is said to be an important
part in the treatment of bronchial congestion. It is also good for digestive
problems such as constipation. The Aloe Vera plant is very beneficial to the
health in the form of the liver, ulcers, hemorrhoids and colon conditions;
Ale Vera gel keeps the colon clean. The use of Aloe Vera has been around for
a long time and there are new products that contain Aloe Vera everyday.
Studies have shown that because the plant has a great reputation that more
people would buy a product just because it has the name Aloe Vera in it.

 The Mosque in Moira

 Dears,

Do you like to tittle - tattle?

No dears, you don't need to put on those solemn and pious faces and tell me
that you hate gossip and never listen to rumours. Of course you do. So do
 I.
So does everyone else. There's no need to be ashamed about it. Rumours are
where you get the real masala about what's happening in the world, not the
government gazettes that masquerade as newspapers.

And most of the time, the gossip that we listen to is dead right. Okay,
maybe here and there the details go a little awry. But by and large, what
 we
get through the grapevine is fairly reliable.

So why does gossip have a bad name? The reason is that when it does go
 wrong
it can go spectacularly wrong. Like the time when an A. I. R. reporter
believed a rumour that the former Prime Minister of India Morarji Desai had
kicked the bucket and broadcast the news without double checking. There was
a furore when it came out that though the old urine drinker was doddering
 in
his 90s - he was very much alive.

The reason why I'm bringing up this matter is to tell you a real life
incident that occurred in my wise village of Moira. Some time ago there was
a ruckus about a mosque that was coming up in the village. The information
came up in an interesting way. A truck overloaded with stones took the
 turn
at Luis's bar, but unfortunately its wheels went too close to the side of
the road, which couldn't bear the weight and crumbled. The truck overturned
and crashed into the house of poor Jose D'mello below, ruining his balcao.

When the villagers asked the truck driver, who luckily escaped unhurt,
 where
he was taking the stones he muttered something in Hindi about a mosque.
Mosque? Where Mosque - they cried? There's no Mosque in Moira! The
 shocked
Moidekars went to investigate and found that the stones were being taken to
a site that hitherto was believed to be a private residence that was coming
up bang opposite the St. Sebastian chapel in Povoacao.

All hell broke loose and a debate began to rage about the pros and cons of
the mosque. One very wise Moidekar thundered, We Moidekars will never
 allow
a Mosque to come up in Moira. But natural... This sentiment was echoed by
most of the villagers, both Hindu and Christian. There was dark mutterings
about how the public would be woken up early in the morning by the call of
 the Azaan over the loudspeakers.

However there were some dissenting voices. One Moidekar somewhat foolishly
opined aloud, Why is it but Natural to deny Muslims the right to
practice their religion? If I mistake not the Constitution of India
guarantees such a right to all its citizens!! He was greeted with angry
 stares.

Stories began to circulate about how arms would get stashed there and how
terrorists might hide there. People began to talk about how the muezzin's
call to prayer would wake the elderly and the babies, unmindful that the
 big
Church bells and the temple music did that anyway. In the meanwhile the
Panchayat decided to act before things took an ugly turn and ordered the
construction to be halted pending investigation. This helped to cool
 tempers
and after a while the matter was forgotten.

A couple of months later while going on one of

Re: [Goanet] Of Gated Communities and Misinformation

2008-07-01 Thread Carvalho

By way of an illustration, accommodation in a proper
gated community in Bangalore and Delhi that I have

---
Cornel,
For some odd reason I had figured you to be an honorable man. Ofcourse that was
before I had any dealings with you. Now, that I have had the misfortune of
meeting you, my opinion has been quite revised.

To begin with, here is a quote that proves you know nothing about India but are
happy to make your own facts. Even with great economic strides made in India,
the percentage of people who can afford a rent of Rs400,000 per month would be
minuscule. So I did a random search of rents in gated communities in India,
Bangalore to be precise.

http://www.alloexpat.com/india_expat_forum/fully-furnished-3-bdr-sarjapur-bangalore-gated-community-t5492.html

The link above proves that it is Rs40,000 per month which is about what a
middle-class person in Bangalore would be able to afford. If one were to rent a
gated-community in Goa, I doubt the rent would be above Rs20,000 per month.

CORNEL WRITES
I will also accept it if you insist that you
are indeed paying this kind of money (for a
conventionally understood gated community and of the
kind I have also seen in Rio and Chennai but am
 unaware of the cost),
-
I happened to have mentioned Chennai, where I spent sometime this March. All of
a sudden we discover that Cornel too has been to Chennai and has been doing a
survey of gated-communities there. So Cornel tell us when were you last in
Chennai and what did you find out about gated communities there?

CORNEL WRITES:
As the premises are not on any printed
map because they are very new, I had to initially find
out their location from estate agents who had the
 flats for sale on line.
---
Cornel I believe any reasonable person who can't find the location to the house
usually calls up the host to find out directions, which I recall you did.
Rarely does a person call up the real-estate agent to get the location to the
house you've been invited for lunch.

CORNEL WRITES:
 b) at one point, you claimed that I must have missed
the gate! Do check this point as a fact. In other
words you initially took the line that there was
indeed a visible gate that I had somehow missed as
well as a substantial fence around, that I had also
 somehow missed!
-
Cornel, no need to rely on memory. This is what I wrote, and I quote:

It could also just be that you missed the wrought-iron gates around it, the
24/7 security guard, the security cameras, the concierge, the 24 hour
maintenance team, the manicured lawns, the under-ground parking space, the
enclosed gardens, the gym and the terrace garden

In my haste, I mistakenly put gate when I meant wrought-iron fence but the fact
that I meant fence is understood by me using the word around it. Now you
yourself acknowledged in your post that there is a wrought-iron fence around
it, even though you insist that an arthritic chappie like you could jump over
it. Infact on one side there is a wall with a barbed-wire on it. As for the
other things I mentioned, please I want you to tell me which of those was I
exaggerating or lying about.

CORNEL WRITES:
Let me end by saying that, I really get quite tired of
some Goans in the West, trying to impress fellow
Goans, particularly in Goa/India with exaggerated
spoken and written claims about rosy living conditions
here. In my book, this is something terribly wrong to
do. Providing an accurate picture is one thing but not
something that may be quite untrue and grossly
 exaggerated.
---
No Cornel I was not trying to impress anyone. My initial post was about gated
communities in India and why they are mushrooming there for the sake of
convenience. In that post I wrote two sentences, about gale-winds in Britain,
about a garden I play with my daughter in, and about me living in a
gated-community similar to the ones mushrooming all over the world. I
distinctly remember the post was about middle-class aspirations and nowhere
do I remember asserting that I belong to the elite, affluent upper-classes of
either India or Britain because I don't. I do however think that I have every
right to call myself middle-class. Nor did I describe the community or pretend
that it is on Rodeo drive or Kensington.

It is you who went on a tangent and wrote as if I live in a hovel and a slum
here in London. Infact when you well know that I live in very decent dwellings
here. I have never felt the need to impress fellow Goans about my residence. I
lived in America for years and you'll be hard pressed to find a single post on
Goanet about my residence or anything about my living conditions.

This I assure you will my last post

[Goanet] Introducing Rape to Don Bosco Students

2008-07-01 Thread Dr. U. G. Barad
Without entering into politics, this message is in reply to Message: 5,
dated: Sun, 29 Jun 2008 on above subject.

I think Don Bosco School did a wise thing by showing Rape of Goa to their
students who are our posterity. No matter even if congress has developed new
terminology for RAPE to be EYE TEASER.

I only hope the supports of new terminology will not get disturb if actual
RAPE takes place with their mother, sisters, sister-in-laws', etc. And that
they will continue to call it EYE TEASER as is advocated by Congress /
Congressmen. Well I would only say ..Long live Congress.. and long live
Congressmen .Congresswomen (you are marked for eye teasing).

Yes, RAPE OF GOA must continue beyond stipulated 30 minute show. Our
posterity must understand this much better then G-Spot news, which we Goans
are tolerating for what reasons I just cannot figure out. Instead of
appreciating on well disserved title which is a big realistic show the
writer harps on something which is almost fluid in Goa.

Writer should have commented on a write up that appeared in TOI - Goa
edition on - G-Spot - which is worst of all. Rape of Goa is much more
appreciating and worthwhile to watch along with any person, irrespective of
age, irrespective of political affiliation and as educational show but not
the G-Spot write up - which writer missed out commenting.

Can I ask a question to the writer - Can you as elderly person ever open,
read OR tolerate details of G-spot as pronounced and appeared in TOI? If you
have no guts to ask question on this issue to TOI I am sorry to say you
equally have no right to question what's happening in Goa. One should be in
DUBAI or in GOA. One cannot have existence in two places.

I only hope the writer reads what appears in ALL local dailies before
punching / soft touching key pad / key board of Lab-top or PC only to break
and replace. This is nothing but showing anger on inanimate object! That too
unwontedly! Unjustifiably!!!

With this I condemn the very post written by the author for I want to appeal
every Goan to rise to the cause of Goa other than raising unwanted,
unjustified, indefensible ifs and buts.

Remember Goa is ALL SOLD OUT, WHAT WE ARE ACTUALLY FIGHTING is to get our
so called share (?) what share (?) whose share (?) for what (?) - which
appears TO BE DENIED by stupid FOXY POLITCIANs knowing the great HISTORY
of Goa.

BUT at the same time let's not allow any non-Goan to hijack our Goanet for
that's the only thing that we can have control on ( I Hope so!!)

Best regards,

The plot belonged to Alan D'Sa (SP of Goa Police).

The Politicians, i am sure everyone is aware off. The Pimps are mostly from
the BJP/RSS brigade, who want to polarise onto communal lines and have

I have been a new comer to the goanet and I am really impressed by the
views of
some of the writers and one of them is Nilkanth Naik. I do appreciate the
message that you are giving out. It is important that peace and unity be
maintained at all cost, I am sure this will not make sense to almost all
the
 politicians.

Like Nilkant, I wish the couple of dogs barking in parliament (the old man
and
his lady in arms) and the saffron brigade led by the so called lion and
their
chamchas in Goa, instigating and misleading the people, would think
otherwise, and follow the live and let live policy, for the sake of the
unity of
the nation, I think India would be what the freedom fighters wanted it to
be
and their sacrifices wouldn't be in vain.

Coming to Goa, ever since the advent of the saffron brigade and the RSS
and the
ever increasing migration of the minority community from Belgaum and Hubli
into
Goa (thanks to the former and present Margao MLA's and a former Navelim
MLA) has
made things go from bad to worse and who are taking advantage of this
situation
? The 40 thieves and their chamchas . It is up to each one of us to
educate
our communities of this danger and not let others take advantage of us.
Like
Nilkant I hope a lot of others Goan brothers and sisters from other
communities
come to the fore and condemn violence and warn the people of the dangers
of
getting carried away by the sweet talks of the bloody politicians and
their

Dear Edu,

Let me discredit you some on your claim about Aloe Vera.

The following is printed on the back of a visiting card handed over to me
by a friend.

ALOE VERA - Known to mandind since ages for its medicinal properties.
Widely used by Alexander the Great to cure wounded soldiers, Cleopatra, to
beautify her skin, Mahatma Gandhi to endure fasts. This magical plant
detoxifies, cleanses, nourishes balances the body, builds up body immune
system to eliminate most illnesses. It is a natural food suppliment power
house. Drink/eat aloe vera to enjoy the benevolence of good health. ! You
will be happy you did !

And this is the testimony of a person I know very well

Severe chest pain led to angiography to detect absolute clogging of the
blood vessels deep in the heart negating the by-pass surgery or angioplasty.
The person actually thanked his stars for not having to go thro' the rituals
of heart by-pass et al, goes home, stops all medications, goes on a no meat,
no oils diet, two swallowable whole garlic pods after dinner every day, one
full fresh home-grown aloe vera (Kanticorr) leaf skinned and eaten first
thing every morning. Believe you me, 60 pushing person is now back to his
100 meter sprints and other untinkable old routine exercises plus running
about the whole day. The person wants to go back to the table to perform the
angiography in good time just to see for himself the fresh visuals.

That is aloe vera for you.

However, I have discarded the claims of this person as it is difficult for
anyone to make me believe. I am a skeptic. I guess I am a Thomas :-))

Thank you for brining me in on this.

You use it when you have sunburn, it is said to be act as a coolant to the
skin when it burns. It is also great for the skin condition eczema.
Researchers believe that the sap that comes from the actual Aloe Vera
plant
can reduce inflammation. Researchers do find that cuts and bruises that
are
treated with Aloe Vera gel from the drug store heal faster than if you put
a

antibiotic ointment on it.

The Aloe Vera gel is
used mostly in dry skin conditions, like eczema, sunburn and rough dry
skin

due to cold weather.

Aloe Vera is very useful in the medicinal way, it is said to be an
important
part in the treatment of bronchial congestion. It is also good for
digestive
problems such as constipation. The Aloe Vera plant is very beneficial to
the

health in the form of the liver, ulcers, hemorrhoids and colon conditions;
Ale Vera gel keeps the colon clean. The use of Aloe Vera has been around
for

a long time and there are new products that contain Aloe Vera everyday.
Studies have shown that because the plant has a great reputation that more
people would buy a product just because it has the name Aloe Vera in it.

And here, he alleges manipulation -

I remember your earlier post in which you had put Miguel's mobile number,
about GPA's meet at Mandovi. But as Miguel clarified later that you had
jumped the gun and posted what was actually meant for some press release.
Goanetters never heard any thing from you on that matter.

By now you should know that Miguel Braganza peddles
falsehoods with the same ease that Sania Mirza returns
her opponent's serves.

The goal of Goa People's Assembly was to bring everyone
together on one platform, and hear what diverse groups
and leaders had to say on the theme of Construction,
Conversion and Mining. To that end, Soter and I set aside
our personal likes and dislikes and invited everyone (including
leaders of the GBA, SVM etc). We asked Miguel Braganza
to moderate the speakers (this should also tell you that
at least one of us set aside his personal dislikes). He
agreed. Now, Soter and I both had converged on the
basic idea of the event. Out of courtesy, we ran a
draft copy of the press release by Miguel Braganza.
Then I posted a version of it on Goanet. Next we know,
Miguel Braganza is jumping up and down sniffing a
conspiracy, claiming that I have jumped the gun blah
blah blah. Soter and I had better things to worry about
than caviling about trivia. Once we realised Miguel Braganza
was going to be a pain in the you-know-where, Soter
told him that we would find another moderator. You may
write to Soter at [EMAIL PROTECTED] and confirm all of this.

I have a feeling since Miguel was not part of your meet,
you are now getting back at him.

You feelings seem to be letting you down.

Au contraire. The only fellow who was obsessed with running
down Goa People's Assembly (and failed miserably) is Miguel
Braganza. You may verify his strenuous efforts yourself -

And of course, the erstwhile fake Satyawan Govekar,

[Goanet] Advalpal- Bicholim gram sabha supports mining, restricts MEDIA entry

2008-07-01 Thread samir umarye
--
Samir Umarye

BICHOLIM JULY 1: The Advalpal gram panchayat meeting today supported
the mining activities in the village even

as a violent mob restricted entry of the media persons in the gram
sabha.

Today's meeting was important as it was called specifically to discuss
on the issue of mining and it's activities. It may be

recalled that last month around 600 villagers of Advalpal including
the local MLA, Rajesh Patnekar had marched on

Advalpal mines paralyzing the mining operations for more than three
days. The villagers especially women had later

accused the deputy collector, Arvind Bugde for failing to take action
against the mining companies and had resorted

agitation near the deputy collector's office.

Today as the mining issue was to come up for the Village panchayat
meeting more than 150 villagers had gathered at

the panchayat hall. The meeting started at about 11.00 am. The
panchayat secretary read out the minutes of the previous

meeting. A section of the villagers were enraged with the presence of
the media persons including Samir Kolwalkar

(HCN) and Samir Umarye (Herald). On seeing the media persons the mob
became violent and sought the answer from

the Sarpanch, Narayan Salgaonkar as to who has invited the media.

There was
a great commotion as the incident occurred just after the secretary
read out the panchayat minutes. A section

of villagers took the responsibility while the majority of them were
against the media presence in the panchayat Hall.

The villagers strongly demanded to discontinue the meeting if the
media were allowed to remain present in the hall. The

mob who was half in a drunk state also threatened to smash the camera
of the news reporters.

As some demanded media presence for the meeting the sarpanch told that
there should be one third majority. The

reporters sighting uproar over the issue preferred to backout.

The meeting started after the retreat of the reporters and it was
decided to support the mining activities in the area. The

villagers also came down heavily on the Advalpal bachao samiti
president, Shamsundar Gaonkar. They accused him of

taking money from the mine owners and opposing the mining activities.
About 140 villagers demanded that the mining

companies should be allowed to continue their work in the area.

All the panchas including deputy sarpanch, Ashwika Gawas, Sheetal
Gadekar, Deelip Gadekar, Harishchandra Sawal

were present for the meeting.

Later in the evening the Bicholim Patrakar Sangh strongly criticised
the move of the villagers calling it as a attack on

the fourth estate. We strongly condemn the behavior of the Advalpal
villagers and seek apology from them as they

cannot suppress the truth the president of the Bicholim patrakar
sangh, Ramnath Desai said adding the incident would

also be reported to the Goa Journalist Association.

Re: [Goanet] SUPERSTITIONS CURES........

2008-07-01 Thread JOHN MONTEIRO
Old superstitions cures. I was one of the posters advising Albert to tread
carefully when recommending some of his (?) old cures for this that, as one
or two of these sounded a bit silly such as the garlic around the neck or hips
etc, (no such thing of course because they were 'proven cures' over hundreds of
years), but a couple of the others were downright dangerous (drinking potions
not proven to be 'cures' may cause people to get ill if not properly
supervised).

Someone on this forum mentioned the ladies with red chillies, reminded me of
one occasion when I was dreadfully ill even though my mother consulted a
doctor (father was away 'on business' as usual) the doc could only prescribe
some tablets, informing my mother told to increase my temperature by wrapping
me up to cure me.

One of our 'ayas' I remember said a pot of fire is what they used in their
home for htis type of illness, so one was brought in the room got a bit
smoky, windows were shut so the coughing started when previously I had no cough
at all!

After a day or so, my mother reminded that I got gradually worse, but then my
mother consulted a neighbour, she was told of a lady who cured one of her
friends' children previously with similar symptons. My mother was no slouch,
she consulted anyone everyone she knew to ensure her child was not going to
worsen.

Sometime later, seemed like ages being smoked alive in this room, a lovely
middle-aged lady walked in, asked for the pot of fire to be removed, cleared
the smoke, closed the windows again, made me sit up, then to stand up, removed
ALL my clothes begun rubbing me all my body from neck to feet, all over with
chillies.

Oh my god, I was burning, burning everywhere! She did not leave a centimetre
bare except I remember she left my face head I think the soles of my feet
palms of my hands without this concoction which appeared to be just chillies
a little water. It was not a paste, more just partly dried chillies with a
little water rubbed all over. I had no energy for a few days prior to this
CURE BY RED CHILLIES, nor during being SMOKED ALIVE the day before.

I was left for what seems like hours with this feeling of being burned alive,
but also felt chilly (not a pun) then shivering begun. I was on the
way to being cured, it didnt feel that way to me!

Next day I was up about like nothing happened, eating, drinking and arguing
with my younger brother, as usual...

SOME remedies, in the right hands DO work, but I must stress the type of red
chilli, dried in certain way, sliced or cut up in strips, etc was the KNOWLEDGE
this lady had.

  She probably saved my life!

I DONT KNOW what was wrong with me, nor did my mother, but it was probably
some type of FEVER it seems which had lasted too long, that lady may have known
exactly what was wrong. I may have caught it from someone else, or by drinking
unboiled water, fresh milk from the man who came by with his cow we bought
milk from him or whatever way this particular illness is passed on.

My fondest of memories of this lady was just that I remember she was a rather
large sweaty lady. No doubt handling red chillies every day being in a room
with no air, she had little choice in the matter, but the huge beads of sweat
on her forehead dripping down to the end of her nose, down her cheeks her
talking calmly to me (cant remember what she said) but also some chanting she
did whilst rubbing me all over ... was all I could 'remember' of this
nightmare, if it was a memory. I did not remember anything else before or after
the application of this red chillies, except that I was hungry when I awoke!

same prominence to this statement of the Party in your esteemed daily as
you have given to the statements made by Shri. Manohar Parrikar and the

Press Statement

The Goa Su-Raj Party has already gone on record to confirm that Sebastian
Rodrigues (Seby) is the valued member of this Party and that he is not a
naxalite as wrongly and maliciously publicized. If he were to have any
links with the naxal movements, he would cease to be associated with this
Party.

The Goa Su-Raj Party would like to set the record strait that like Seby
Rodrigues now, other Executive Members of this Party responsible for the
formation of this Party, had been, during their younger days, vigorously
campaigning in the mining belts against the unscrupulous and highly
detrimental mining activities in Goa to extract iron ore and, its ill
effects on the population, directly affecting their health, their
agricultural fields, their water sources as well as causing heavy pollution
to the waterways and rivers through the run-off of the mining rejects during
the monsoons, the weakening of the bunds lining the banks of the rivers due
to the movement of iron-ore laden barges, causing breaches in the bunds,
thereby destroying the cultivable fields through salt-water ingress. They
are fully supportive of the activities of their co-member Shri. Seby
Rodrigues and commend and congratulate him for his tireless work in bringing
awareness to the people of Goa over the increased irresponsible mining
activity that is killing them slowly.

Goa Su-Raj Party expects an apology from Shri. Manohar Parrikar, the
supposed to be 'responsible' leader of the Opposition, who has attacked with
slander and libel the good character of an individual whose only interest
has been to get a better deal for those generations of people, on whom the
mine-owning class has been trampling upon in the last more than fifty years
to inundate everything that directly sustains their lives, making them the
fugitives in their own lands, failing which, this Party will encourage and
support any Civil or Criminal action that our member Shri. Seby Rodrigues
may choose to take in a Court of Law (and not like the naxals 'in another
forum') to vindicate his good name and honor which Shri. Manohar Parrikar
has gone to great lengths to destroy to appease the mine owners.

In context with the statement made by Shri. Sankalp Amonkar, President of
the Goa Pradesh Youth Congress [GPYC] in the section of the press (GT -30
June, 2008), the Goa Su-Raj Party is glad to see that at last the worms are
coming out of the woodwork. The nexus between the Youth Wing of the Congress
Party and the mining lobby has been cleanly exposed.

It is unbelievable that a wing of the Congress Party should echo the words
of the (sworn) enemy of the parent Party without bothering to find out the
true facts of the matter for themselves, first, before coming out with a
cowardly statement which relies upon the ' foolish revelations' by Shri.
Manohar Parrikar.

End.

Re: [Goanet] June 18-- Let the Revolution Begin

Mario, you and others fail to understand what the real Goan issue is all
about.

Nobody wants to be ruled. Goa should never have ever been ruled.

Goa should not be ruled by anyone. Definitely not by Europeans and
definitely not by other brown-skinned people (read ethnic Indians).
We Goans may be ethnical Indian. Just like the Portuguese are ethnical
Europeans. But that is about it.
The Pakistanis were also ethnical Indian but they chose not to be ruled by
India.

Goa never belonged to the Republic of India and therefore it does not make
sense to say that Goa has been returned to the Republic of India in 1961.
Only ignorant people can claim that. Goa should have been liberated and
returned to Goa and to Goans so that they could choose their future. That is
all I have been saying all along. That is it. Plain and simple.

The Republic of India * did not * have a legal stand to rule over Goa or to
conquer Goa.

You and others keep changing (spinning) what I say.

I am not defending the side of the Portuguese.

I am defending the side of Goa and Goans.

What has happened is clearly injustice to Goa and Goans.

I think this is quite simple to read and understand.
So, please do not keep changing what I write and influence other people in
the bargain.

It is about time Goans understand that we Goans are the ones who lost out in
1961.
Not the Portuguese!

Thanks
Paulo.

[Goanet] Doom for Goa - tip of the land conversion iceberg

2008-07-01 Thread Rajan P. Parrikar
To Goanet -

Last week, following a request under the RTI Act,
I received documents for land conversions for specified
villages in Salcette. I had asked for information for
the years 2005, 2006, 2007 and 2008. Additionally,
I have the papers for other areas and talukas of Goa.

A few examples of the sanads are given below.
The essence of the information is on the top half
of the first page. The following are the things to
look for: Date of issue, Name, Address and
Survey number of the plot, Area. Remember,
these are only a few of the large number of
papers obtained.

I have said it many times on Goanet. Goa is
doomed unless all construction and land conversion
is brought to a halt immediately.

Also - the oft-heard cliche about we Goans being
responsible for the destruction of our homeland
is, yes, true. But it is equally true that it is Goans
themselves who now stand in the way of reclaiming
Goa. You may think I am referring to the miners
and the builders only.

Not true. I have been at this business of investigating
and documenting photographically the ruin of Goa
the past 18 months or so, the last 9 months out
of them with unusual intensity and focus. I have
now come to the conclusion that what we have here
in Goa is a mafia of activists that IS AS DANGEROUS
AS THE BUILDERS AND THE MINERS.

I have thousands of photographs, hundreds of RTI
documents (all obtained by expending personal
time, effort and money - and these things don't
come cheap - and at risk to my person).

You would think that a group like the GBA would
have sought all the info bank I have accumulated.
No! Not a single activist from this body (supposedly
at the forefront of saving Goa) has bothered. When
I questioned the GBA leaders about their activities
and utterances, I was branded a saffronite
or it was alleged that I was trying to foment
dissent in the ranks of the GBA at the behest
of BJP. When cornered with uncomfortable questions,
the strategy is to label the interlocutor saffron.
That's Activism 101 in Goa for you.

We recently tried to bring everyone together on a
common platform we called the Goa People's Assembly.
The usual rascals immediately perked up, afraid
that the space they have commandeered all this
while may be toast.

Here, too, we had saboteurs. Some speakers
were told not to attend. The common Goan
citizen will have to ponder the question: who
would want to disrupt a meet that could potentially
have paved the way for a call for a complete ban
on construction conversion? That would have
conceivably demonstrated a united front and
put the govt, builders and miners on notice?

You can go back and read the postings of
Satyawan Govekar - the fake ID. Too bad for him
that he got found out. But this is the kind of gutter
sludge that one has to deal with here in Goa.

Yhe Taleigao Bachao Abhiyan had invited
me to screen The Rape of Goa in their village
on July 6. Yesterday, I received a call from one
of the organizers with profuse apologies that the
screening will not be possible. Today, I learnt
that a couple of people (including one who fancies
himself as an intellectual) were responsible
for scuttling the screening. These hypocrites are
quick to condemn the Sangh Parivar for intolerance
but are themselves the biggest exemplars of
intolerance and bigotry. These are the lowest of
the low - censors of freedom of expression because
the contents do not sit well with their dogma.

The activist mafia is deeply entrenched here and
Goa will not be saved by the current cast of
operators, most of whom have a vested interest
in keeping construction, conversion and mining
strong and healthy.

I have seen the damage done to Goa firsthand.
Through the RTI, I have also pried open just
a wee bit the door to the vault of frauds
perpetrated on the Goan people. To sift through,
process, analyze all the papers I have and
get the big picture would require a sizable
staff on full-time duty. An organization like the
GBA should have had a huge database by now, but
they have NOTHING. Why do all the hard work
when you can simply show up at a public meeting
and give a

Re: [Goanet] Repeated use of the word Ghanti

2008-07-01 Thread JOHN MONTEIRO
When the word Ghanti was used to describe a lovely old migrant woman whose
photo was taken, with or without her permission, I objected to the use of the
word but was 'inundated with emails' saying that there is nothing wrong with
the word Ghanti.

The photo posted on this forum at the time, of this careworn old migrant
woman was one of RP's thousands over the years that he has posted on this no
doubt other forums, he is a great photographer, wonderfully taken so
exact...etc etc but it was EXPLAINED to me, ad nausim by several posters (as
though you would a child) that the correct usage was used in this case. I did
not pursue the matter, it was irrelevant what they had to say, I knew what it
meant I knew it was wrong then, and it is wrong now.

I suspect it then I continue to suspect the use of the word Ghanti was used
in a derogatory sense at the time, and still being used in the same way now,
but of course we are to believe that 'no stone was caste with malice' on this
forum.

  Rubbish!

Some of us are getting a bit peeved with the handfull of posters who are
continually deriding, denegrating others sensibilities by what they think is
their right to say anything at any time, to anyone who disagrees with them (na
nana na na poke out your tongue), because they come from a higher caste
within their own religion (with so many Catholics on this forum it 'beggars
belief' the caste system even exists with the Church, but it certainly looks
that way to me).

We all know better. But sometimes this has to go over our heads or we will
find ourselves arguing amongst ourselves.

  As if !!

2008-07-01 Thread JOHN MONTEIRO
Ed

My mother was the product of a mix-(white) race couple, a French JEWESS
British PROTESTANT.

SHE was the Ullah I was referring to in my post, it was one of my father's
little aliases he used when 'on business' as it were. WHAT his business was
around the 17 June 1950 is anyone's guess, but I can suppose it was not any
different to what he had been up to during WW2 or during the Spanish Civil War,
nor when he worked for PIDE.

I was incorrect to say I was a hybrid, you are of course correct in your post
of how what a hybrid is, I was just in a hurry to answer to a post regarding
mixed races, religions etc. So many on this forum are either brown nosing with
the highbrow or academic elements here but not looking in the mirror
themselves, nor asking about their own parentage.

I was just saying, to NOT call people names, nothing more than that. And to
prove this I laid bare some of my family's own 'misdeeds' if this is what they
were, or if that is what they meant it to be. One reason my mother was BORN in
Bombay 7 Sept 1923 was that her parents relationship was out of wedlock,
similarly my own mother's relationship with Casimiro Emerito Teles Jordao Rozo
Monteiro was was also the same.

Its just one instance that proves that if you come from a bastardized
hierachy it does not necessarily mean you have to continue the line, nor have
to take up your father's profession, neither my younger brother nor I were in
the least bit aware of his PIDE activities, and that is thanks to our mother
who protected us in our childhood forbade us to ever mention his name or the
Portuguese side of the family ever again.

I did purposefully marry OUT of my 'race' because I was very unhappy with
relationships with WHITE women (though not sure if its correct to say 'out of
my race' since EuroAsian is the same 'race'), only our 'colour' / 'creed' /
country / locations were different. Otherwise you could not meet two people
who suited complimented each other.
I the product of the above, and my beautiful wife a Mauritian (Tamil /
Hindu), coincided with my beliefs, being of the same religion as my wife, but 2
years BEFORE she was born. She is 17 years my junior would not have made a
difference, but it was fantastically coincidental we both have the same
religion, the same outlook on life, eat drink the same foods like the same
style music, family get-togethers etc.

Meanwhile, back on the ranch.. the purpose of my delving so deeply
digressing a little is to just say it is not nice for people to denegrate
others by calling them names, nor to assume someone is of a 'low caste' (be it
the way in which you described my mother, which is wholly incorrect) or to be
so highbrow looking down at others, as is clear by your post. Its the same
thing, you dont have to SAY it, just IMPLYING it is sufficient to hurt others.

John Monteiro said: Personally speaking, and this is what I do on this forum, I
am a hybrid, with many attachments to the major religions of the world, but
have taken for my spiritual comfort, the Hindu faith for the past 42 years.
Since I was 16 in fact. But this is MY choice, in parentage, my family, the
major figure was my father, albeit an absent one for most of my childhood, his
donation to making me was to make me 50% Catholic, but I was brought up 100%
Catholic for the first dozen years of my life, due to my mother not having a
say in how my education or religious beliefs were to be handled.

To add to this melange, yet one of my father's names (on my birth certificate)
is Ullah. How about that then? I am also a MUSLIM.

Now try and work that one out. Jewish Muslim? Protestant Hindu? Portuguese

[Goanet] Richard Zimler speaking to Wendell Rodricks

2008-07-01 Thread Cecil Pinto
Wendell Rodricks speaks to author Richard Zimler on his book 'Guardian
of the Dawn'.

WR:
Your book Guardian of the Dawn is based on the Inquisition in
Goaa topic that is glossed over and not discussed too much.

RZ:
In every country, politicians and journalists try to avoid discussing
the negative aspects of their national history unless they are forced
to do so. And so, the Inquisition is largely ignored in Portugal. My
impression is that very few people know how it worked – or even care.
But I think we owe it to the victims of the Inquisition - tens of
thousands of men and women and children – to know how it functioned.
I also think that the subject of religious intolerance is extremely
relevant to the world today. Fundamentalism – whether Christian,
Moslem, Hindu or Jewish – is a great danger to those of us who believe
in human rights, democracy and, in particular, freedom of expression.

What I find so horrible and hypocritical even today is that many
Portuguese still speak of Goa as if it was a peaceful and wonderful
place – the exotic and friendly capital of the spice trade. To the
Indians who'd been coerced into converting to Catholicism and then
tortured to ensure they never practiced any traditional Hindu rituals,
it was hardly friendly. It was a nightmare! I'm criticized sometimes
for stating that so directly, but it's clear to anyone who does the
research that the Indians of Goa lived inside a ruthless religious
dictatorship, where any prayer they made to Krishna or any painting of
Hanuman in their home put them at risk of being incarcerated for
years. They had no freedom of expression or religion. So maybe it
was a great place for the Portuguese rulers who became rich by
importing and exporting pepper and cinnamon, but it was a territory
where any Hindu who had converted to Christianity could be denounced
at any time and end up rotting away in prison for many years.

WR:
The books by Priolkar's and European authors on the Inquisition in
Goa, are out of print and not available in book shops. Do you feel
this is an obvious attempt to keep the Inquisition out of pubic
discussion?

RZ:
I don't believe there is any conspiracy, but it is very unfortunate
that the books aren't easy to find. My impression is that most people
in Portugal think that Goa's history is irrelevant to them, since it
is no longer part of their Empire. Also, I think that it is hard for
them to accept that their ancestors – the conquerors of Goa – behaved
brutally toward Indians and kept Goa under a state of siege for 250
years. In a certain way, the relationship of the Portuguese to Goa is
not so very different from their relationship with other former
Portuguese colonies, such as Angola and Mozambique. How much do the
Portuguese know about any of their former colonies in Africa and Asia?
Very little, I think. And they know almost nothing about the history
of their former colonies prior to the arrival of Europeans. It is as
if they still believe that a country's history only begins when it is
discovered by Europeans

WR:
What was the worst atrocity in the Inquisition?

RZ:
The Inquisitors burned people alive for refusing to confess to
heretical beliefs and for refusing to accept Christ as their
saviour. They also tortured prisoners – sometimes for years – without
even telling them what specific crime they were accused of.

WR:
Some Hindus feel that they were targets of the Inquisition but in fact
it was the Moslems, the Jews and the recent converts to
Christianity.

RZ:
The Inquisition was imposed on Goa in order to persecute Hindus, Jews
and others who had converted to Christianity. The idea was to keep
these converts from practicing their previous faiths. So any sign of
backsliding – for instance, of making a puja or whispering a Hindu
prayer – became a punishable offence. For even the smallest infraction
a person could be arrested, imprisoned and tortured in order to
extract a confession of having practiced forbidden rituals.

In theory, the Inquisition had no power over Hindus, Jews, or Moslems
who refused to convert to Christianity. The problem was that if they
didn't convert, they were denied certain rights by the Portuguese.
For instance, those who held tight to their Hindu beliefs lost their
right to marry freely and were denied certain employments, and they
paid higher taxes than the Christians. Hindus were also obliged to
attend Church services and were sometimes coerced – even kidnapped –
in order to be forcefully baptized.

Unfortunately, once Hindus, Jews or Moslems converted, they found
themselves subject to the control of the Catholic Church. This made
them very vulnerable to persecution; if they were accused of
practicing their previous faith, the Inquisitors would have them
arrested and imprisoned. Once inside the Inquisitional prison, they
had no rights whatsoever and they were completely cut off from their
families.

I wrote Guardian of the Dawn to denounce this crime

Dear John,

I think I am exceeding my quota of posts on Goanet today but moderator I
promise this to be the last one.

Legitimacy, illegitimacy are all man-made labels foisted on people. Human
beings are much more organic and dynamic than society expects them to be. A
piece of paper does not legitimize the existence of a human being nor does it
give legitimacy to the union that created that human being. A person born out

You have a wonderful story here to tell. Perhaps one day soon you should sit

Hi Joe,

It is none of those.

The word is a Portuguese word, not Konkani.
And the correct spelling is: Teatro.

Teatrista is the so called teatro actor.

Konkani speakers have the habit of omitting the last vowel.
That is why they sometimes say teatr rather than teatro.

is unlikely to have had consent from either his mother or his
grand-parents to have their privacy and confidentiality breached on
GoaNet.

If (as you John have related earlier on GoaNet) you have another
sibling, by the above statement, you are casting serious aspersions on
the character of the very person who looked after you i.e. your
motheras well as on her parents.

That makes you IMHO an absolutely ungrateful person.

What is wrong with you people who want to tell everybody here about
personal details of your parents, married/unmarried, sudra/
chardo/brahman etc. Get a hold of yourself, guys. Do you really
believe that the rest of us care enough to know this personal junk?

I normally advise those who feel this repetitive urge of emesis - to
do so privately in the washroom. Why vomit in public? Unless you have
a psychosomatic problem.

If you need professional help - go get it.

By this reasoning the peace process in the Middle East can be put to rest.

Israel won. They should keep all the conquered territories.

Now that also settles the question of the millions of Jews who were thrown
out by the Arabs with only the shirts on their back! No rationale exists
for their claim for reparations or restitution.

It is a fact that Goa was colonised by Portugal. It is
also a fact that the Supreme Court of India determined
that the Indian Union acquired the
Portuguese State of India on the 19th Dec. 1961 by an
act of conquest and subjugation.

Mario adds:

Isn't it also a fact that the so-called facts above
are irrelevent? Isn't it a fact that Goa is a state
in India and this has been recognized by the UN and
everyone else but Paulo and a few of his closest
friends?

Paulo wrote:

So, according to India we are not liberated but
conquered. It is only some of us Goans that
shamelessly continue to claim that we have

Hey, Paulo. My family was on the opposite side of

Dear Paulo,

I am glad that at least you chose to respond to Mario Goveia.

Surely Mario and his ilk do not know that the issue of Goa had three
interested parties (1) Goans (2) Portugal (3) India. As it turned out,
Goa and Goans were brushed aside by Nehru and Menon.

There are the shallow who probably are unaware that intellectual Goans
were OPPOSED to Portugal's continuing in Goa. They were working
towards Independence. Froilano de Mello opposed Salazar right in the
Portuguese Parliament. The ones who were the real boot-lickers of
Salazar are the ones who miraculously became 'freedom-fighters'
overnight - in mid Dec 1961.

Using Mario's logic (oxymoron), it could be said that Iraq has a right
to invade and capture Kuwait. Wasn't the space now known as Kuwait,
once part of the Empire of which Iraq was a part? So - what is the
difference?

Remember now, Mario has justified recent conquests where according to
his logic: His side won, the other side lost. What happened to the
place which got bombed to smitherins and people who got wiped out - is
immaterial. I know that Eugene Correia said that there is a price to
pay (I paraphrase). I suppose that is OK as long as I don't have to
pay it. You should wait for Mario's typical response to really
understand the prevalent illogic.

Using Mario's brilliant logic a step further: It is justifiable for a
man to molest a woman IF he is strong and she isn't. It doesn't matter
that it is morally wrong to use force against a person or people
without express consent. Isn't that one of the lessons from the
Nuremberg trial? Sadly, for the Marios of this world, ALL that
matters is that - the strong shall prevail. More in keeping with the
Darwinian survival of the fitest that these amigos de Mario love to
hate.

jc

PS: I don't know why anybody should grumble about what is happening in
Goa today. I believe that after Dec 1961, every single Indian from any
part of India has every legal right to buy ANY piece of property which
is legally sold to him/her.

All this Rajan Parrikar et al bhaillo nonsense is just that i.e.
nonsense. No Indian is a bhaillo in Goa. As Mario says get used
to it.

Also get used to the fact that even IF there are Re 1 toilets or
Cornelian Port-a-loos, those who do not wish to pay the Re 1 or use
the Portaloos, have every right to defecate and micturate anywhere
(especially on those beaches) in Goa just like they did in the rest of
India. otherwise - take them to court and get a ruling.

[Goanet] Goanet Admin: Goanet Rules and Regulations

2008-07-01 Thread Herman Carneiro

Goanet Rules and Regulations

Goanet, the first and largest Goa-related mailing list, offers a unique
platform for communication on issues pertinent to Goa and Goans worldwide.
In order to maintain a high quality of dialogue and information-sharing,
this decade-old network has established rules to encourage smooth and
conflict-minimized interaction between members on its mailing lists. The
rules are outlined below.

If you subscribe to any of the Goanet mailing lists, it is your
responsibility to review the rules and to follow them. By becoming a member
of Goanet (signing up on the mailing list implies 'membership') you agree to
abide by the rules. If you violate the rules, you are liable to action which
may range from your post not being circulated via the list, to a reprimand,
or even a suspension or termination of your membership, depending on the
seriousness of the issue involved and/or the frequency of breaches.

Please note that membership to this discussion group is provided free of

membership to the list approaches you, report the incident immediately to

*** RULES ***

- Post material which is relevant to Goa and Goans.
In the event that the volume of emails in a day is high, posts on topics
directly pertinent to Goa and Goans and those of higher quality will be
given a preference.

- Do not use foul, offensive or abusive language.
Maintain a level of decency and respect to fellow Goanetters at all times.
Flame-baits and flame-wars will be rejected.
Goanet will also reject all posts which are derogatory or offensive to any
group based on gender, religion, caste, class, nationality, race or other
such grounds. This does not mean that Goanet disallows discussion and debate
on these issues; but all discussion should be conducted in a polite,
non-derogatory and non-offensive manner.

- Do not engage in personal attacks.
This includes name-calling of any sort. Discussion should focus on the facts
and ideas being discussed, and not the person posting the same.

- Do not post spam.
Goanet treats repeated postings, commercial posts, lengthy reposts of an
original email, cross posts, among other things, as spam. If you're replying
to an email and quoting it, quote the minimum and delete the rest.
Members will be limited to a maximum of four emails a day on the list. The
moderators may relax this rule in the exceptional circumstance that more
than four of a member's posts are of a high quality and/or add an important
perspective to a time-sensitive or on-going discussion.

- Do not forward private emails to the list without permission from the
author.

- Do not forward copyrighted material to the list in a manner that could
lead to objections from the copyright holder.
Previously published material should cite the source of the same, and, in
every possible case, the web site address where it is located. Goanet
believes in giving authors full credit for their work.

- Do not send attachments of any kind to the list.
Emails to Goanet that contain attachments will be rejected.

- Use your real name as the sender, not an alias.
The Goanet Admin team reserves the right to ask members for proof of
identity or contact details, if it has any reason to suspect their identity.
Members suspected of using an alias may be suspended until satisfactory
proof of identity is provided.

- Use a meaningful and appropriate subject line for your posts to Goanet.
Make sure it is concise and informative. When replying to an email do not
change the subject line unless the topic of discussion has changed
significantly from the original topic of discussion. This ensures continuity
in the discussion thread. It also allows the archives to be sorted by

In case you need to change the subject line mid-way through a discussion, it
should include the earlier subject-line as follows:

Subject lines poking fun of others taking part in a debate, or having the
possibility of acting as flame-baits, will be rejected.

And Dr Anil Desai replied:
It is alright to make any derogatory remarks that would be profoundly
offensive to thousands of Shiva worshippers and Hindus like myself in Goa
and outside, isnt it? Miguel, what should interest you to know is that
bigoted views of bigots are not just restricted to religion but apply to
politics as well. So, go on. Let us have more of your incoherent rants.

In the M.F. Hussein Judgment, the Delhi High Court correctly observed
that it has these days become some kind of a fashion to be offended by
anything and everything under the sun. Some time back, members of the
Hindu Janajagruti Samiti were seen outside the Inox Multiplex,
passionately protesting against the screening of the movie Jodhaa
Akbar on the grounds that the sentiments of Hindus were being hurt. I
watched this historical epic and found nothing objectionable in it.
Not many took the protests seriously and the movie went on to become a
huge raging hit all across the Country.

Dr Anil Desai is similarly raking up a needless issue over a harmless
statement that was made in due jest, sarcasm and humor. Dr Desai(and
Dr Barad) may have felt offended but the surgeon should have spoken
for himself and not for the so called thousands of offended Hindus.

Miguel can rest assured that Hindus have not found his post and the
references therein objectionable. Had his posts been really offensive
to the Hindu community or to the Saraswats, several goanetters,
irrespective of their religious identities, would have come out openly
against the same. Yes, even me and Dr Jose Colaco! I personally found
nothing wrong in his post and I am sure the so called thousands of
Hindus found nothing objectionable either; else they would have raised
their heads too.

The Hindu scriptures themselves are full of sexual and sensual stories
and illustrations that the purists are bound to find vulgar, obscene
and even scary for production. But that is the inherent beauty of the
religion. That is the beauty that has been Hussein's inspiration for
more than 6 decades. Such scriptures are being liberally interpreted
by Hindus themselves - -students in their college festivals,
professional artists in their plays, Bollywood in its movies - - I
could site so many illustrations. I watched a Hindi movie about a year
back in which Sanjay Dutt who plays the role of Yama- the God of
death, comes to Earth, makes merry, drinks whisky, etc.

Now here are some passages that I have picked up at random from
Valmiki's Ramayan, in which Sita is described so passionately and
sensually:

Tapering and graceful are your thighs like an elephant's trunk,
Rounded and ample are your hips,
Large and firm are your breasts touching each other,
Painted and prominent their nipples,
Two smooth,round fruits of the
Tala tree pretty with pearls.

And consider this self-description by Sita:

My breasts, hands, feet, thighs,
Are all symmetrical,
My breasts touch each other
And have depressed nipples,
My navel is set deep In my shapely stomach,
Well-fleshed are my breasts
And ample thighs,
My skin-hair is soft, My complexion pearl bright...

If I research a bit more on google, I could dig up hundreds of such
passages that are bound to ruffle a few more feathers than the ones
ruffled so far. Why single out Miguel for just a few lines in his
post? I have met Miguel on a few occasions and he has come across as a
reasonable, well-mannered and a cultured person. Truly rational and
secular! The way I see this, Miguel has been inspired by the
scriptures too and he should be commended for using Hindu scriptural
references in his posts. He certainly does not deserve to be
criticized.

Sandeep

Re: [Goanet] Why do some find it necessary to vomit in public?

2008-07-01 Thread JOHN MONTEIRO
Thank you jc, most helpful. I hope you feel better for getting this off your
chest. There are many people on this forum who 'have reasons' to berate
others, demonise them or just because they have a bad streak in them, they must
'rub the vomit all over their bodies'

My original post was to stop people from being so damn inhumane towards
others on this forum. You have excelled yourself in this. I will now place
you in Number One slot as a nasty person. One without conscience or care.
What have I ever done to you that brings the worst of your outpourings aimed at
me?

I have said no more than some posters who have brought out their memories on
this forum, many who have thanked me for mine my thanking them for theirs. I
have no demons regarding my past, nor my present. I am simply reiterating
stuff that happened in the past, it is not a private matter in the least
using examples, using my family rather than berating someone else's.

Vomiting in public? Is that how you see it? If that is the case, then my
apologies to you, and my apologies for breathing the same air as you. As for
getting my mother's permission, that would not be possible, as she passed away
in 1999, as for me using her name her personal life, well that is something
she would have been proud of me for doing, she had no secrets, her life was an
open book. As is my life that of my brother AND his family.

My wife children support my comments on this forum frown (even show
disgust) when I show them some posters' views, such as yours. You jump to
conclusions, accusing berating without so much as a care in the world, stuck
as you are on your computer with no other life to live than to belittle me
other posters who are piecing their lives together bit by bit, where there were
missing parts which could only have been gotten by me with my vomiting in
public this way.

IF it was not for Goanet the many people who were kind enough to get me the
information I needed I would NEVER have known who my father REALLY was, if it
was not for GOANET I would never have found some of my PORTUGUESE relatives,
connections to Goa still ongoing, but this is because my life IS an open book.

You do not have to read any posts of mine, just delete them... its
possible any day now I may vomit a bit too close to your own feet, on your own
doorstep as it were. I know that 'my vomit' has reached some posters houses,
and a few have damned me for bringing up the subjects of my father other
posts regarding collusion by some people in my time in Goa (pre-1961)
suggesting that I ought to leave these matters alone not mention any more any
pre-1961 (nor post-1961) matters in Goa, the PIDE the alliances between some
Goans (of 'rank' or was it 'caste' within the Catholic majority those who
were anti-liberation / independence or whatever YOU call it).

Yes vomit you call it. Wipe your shoes of this vomit, take a long walk.
Dont be too close to me (ie : get involved), you never know the next time I
feel sick, it may contain something familiar then you will know the true
smell of vomit. At the moment I keep it all to myself my family. But then I
may not have any vomit which involves you, so IGNORE ME, please( ??). Just
pretend you dont know me, never read anything I have written on this forum
then move on with your life.

I have washed my linen in public for a purpose, (not as you think to air any
demons or lay any ghosts to rest). I have no need of professional help, nor
your amateur interference either.

My REAL ghosts ARE in Goa, they will be vented got rid of, lain to rest as
it were when I visit Goa again, hopefully end of this year, in the meantime I
am just having some fun, gathering information on my father's side of the
family and sharing of my experiences those of my family, and where they came
from (not to mention HOW they came into being).

If you dont like it, you know what to do, press the reject / delete button,
or better still do as some of us have done with the 'more tiresome' posters and
place these posters you dont like into the BULK folder where you can delete the
whole lot of them in one go, without so much as a backward glance.

But Selma is correct, there was much love between my parents, unwed as they
were, (at my age these things I still frown on partnerships that produce
children willy nilly (no pun intended) and then either abandon them as my
mothers' parents did or as my father did with myself my brother, without so
much any legal standing for them, no claim or rights, under the law.

You need only to look a few hundred yards, metres or take a few steps outside
your own house, in any state in India to find abandoned children, children
brought about by illicit visits, or those who are girls not wanted, other
children caste out because of rape, or underage abuse, and so on. These all

Legitimacy, illegitimacy are all man-made labels
foisted on people. Human beings are much more organic
and dynamic than society expects them to be. A piece
of paper does not legitimize the existence of a human
being nor does it give legitimacy to the union that
created that human being. A person born out of
wedlock might have been conceived with much more love
and passion than one born within a marriage contract.

Mario responds:

Neither John nor his mother had anything to do with
how they were conceived, born or brought up as
children. If they turned out well as adults and are
happy and productive human beings, they should be
commended because they did so against heavy odds,
especially within the Indian social context.

I do not recall any mention of legitimacy or
illegitimacy until Selma gratuitously inserted these
concepts into her response. Also, Selma's fatuous
statements describing the institution of marriage as a
piece of paper are spurious and irresponsible as
social commentary, even though she has a right to
express her opinion of what marriage means to her.

Conceiving a child out of wedlock may be based on love
and passion, or it may be based on low self-esteem,
animal lust, selfishness and self-interest without
consideration for the norms of society, one's
religion, or the best interests of the child. John
has mentioned that his mother was abandoned as a
child. I cannot even imagine what that must be like
for a child.

No one really knows for sure within a particular
relationship but the adults are better able to cope -
it is almost always the child who bears the burden or
pays a price.

During question answer session in the Assembly that ended in chaos a
question on Burglaries in Worship places in Goa was answered as under:

It was tabled that between 2005 to November 2007 there were 114 burglaries.
Out of which, 77 burglaries were reported in Hindu Temples, 36 in Catholic
Churches and lone case was reported in Muslim Mosque (Other Burglaries are
not reported or they are not registered as yet!)

Out of 77 cases in Hindu Temples only 24 were identified out of which 21
cases was charge-sheeted while 3 are pending investigation and only 2 cases
have ended up in conviction. No one knows what has happened about
non-identified 53 cases i.e. the percentage of non-identified Hindu Temple
Burglary Cases stands at hooping 69%!

Out of 36 cases in Catholic Churches, so far only 9 have been identified of
which 7 cases have been charge sheeted and 5 have resulted in conviction.
No one knows what has happened about non-identified 27 cases!

In case of lone burglary in Muslim Mosque police has not made any progress
and or not whiling to do anything about this case.

In short, out of 114 burglaries 80 cases are not identified. Why? Because
our politicians know who are involved in these burglaries and that they
don't want to disturb their vote banks?

NOW YOU ADD ALL THE OTHER INCIDENCIES THAT ARE NOT COVERED BY ABOVE PERIOD
TAKE UP THE ISSUE WITH AAM ADMI CM.

I have been told several times in the past, by one or
two posters that if I find something objectionable, to
either ignore it, delete it or find something else to
do rather than comment upon some of the 'major
posters' on this forum (so as not to hurt their tender
artistic feelings I suppose).

Mario responds:

John,

I'm glad you did not take the advice of these one or
two posters because their advice makes no sense.
Think about it. You have these posters, hiding in the
weeds around the Goanet forum, watching what is going
on and advising you, who has something to say, to
ignore the proceedings and move on.

Apparently THEY do not have either the interest and/or
intelligence and/or confidence to join the fray or
comment on even issues they disagree with. Isn't it
illogical, therefore, even absurd, for them to
conclude that it is those who are actively sticking
their necks out and risking criticism and opprobium
who have tender artistic feelings?

Aren't your advisors, and those who are gullible
enough to take their spurious advice, the ones who are
hiding their opinions so as to not expose either their

Mario wonders:

Without reading them how would you know what they

There is a difference, wouldn't you agree, between

Selma has been known to do some or all of the above.

South Asian Film Festival (SAFF2008/Goa)
27th-30th June

VEILS OF MAYA
 Srilanka/ Dir. Boodee Keerthisena/ Dur. 110 mins.

It was said 'Entry only for individuals 18 and above'

But the above movie show had many children with families etc (Started 8pm iso
7.30 at Marquinez Screen1 on 30.6.08)

Anybody could get in the hall, there were no checks on underage etc.

The above film 'Veils of Maya' was not suitable for children
It had many sex scenes or love making scenes or nude scenes
The film had dirty language too like the use of 'Fcuking' etc
I had seen few families leaving the hall after knowing it was not meant for
children.

I like the film anyway.
It's all about Drama academy, tropical fruits, Mangoes. Srilankan Pigs,
drinking, smoking, eating, cheating on husbands/wives, sex, Dhesi-Ghori love
affair etc

Can some one forward this to ESG please? so, that they do not allow children
next time when the film was meant for adults.

Also, in the film schedule/programe, it should clearly indicate Cert/ A etc. I
guess, it was not shown as the SAFF films were meant for 18 and above.

There was a good crowed for the films, mostly non-Goans.

HENNA
starring: Rishi Kapoor, Zeba Bhaktiar, Ashwini Bhare, Saeed Jaffrey, Raza
Murad, Jalafariad, Kiran Kumar director: Randhir Kapoor

Another film I watched is 'Henna'

Listen to this hit song of 1991

or

During the interval, I think we had a chance to see the film heroine Zeba live
on stage at KA on 29th June. She was still looking young though.
If she was 20 then, she must be now atleast 36.

We like this movie too.

Looking forward to watch more films during SAFF 2009

All the best.

[Goanet] Goanet Reader: From wooden to metal ploughs and more: the Charis of Parra

2008-07-01 Thread Goanet Reader
From wooden to metal ploughs and more: the Charis of Parra

By Claude Alvares
[EMAIL PROTECTED]

The rains have commenced. As every Goan knows, this is the
time for work in the fields. Ploughs are dragged out. Oxen
get extra rations. Women covered in plastic sheets gear up to
plant paddy, working ankle deep in water without complaint.
Goans revel at the sight of farmers ploughing fields as they
pass them in their transport to cities for work during the
day. At night, the din of chanting frogs provides reassurance
that nature has completed one more cycle and started another.

One man in Bardez, however, loses his sleep during the
crucial months of May and June just prior to the start of
field work: Mohan Chari, Parra's blacksmith.

Forty-eight year old Mohan manufactures and repairs metal
ploughs. He's been doing this work since the age of 17. His
customers come from near and far to find him, not just from
around Bardez, but from Pednem and Salcette as well. When
something goes wrong with a plough, he is bound to repair it,
even if the farmer turns up at night. Ploughing cannot wait.

Ploughs that need substantial repair trickle in throughout
the month of May and by the end of the month a forest of them
can be see in his shack, each with the name of the farmer and
the village written neatly on it in chalk.

These two months, Mohan has repaired more than a hundred
ploughs and made a dozen new ones. Farmers who come to see
him recall their fathers coming to see his father about the
same business: ordering a new plough or having an old one
repaired.

The Chari family of Parra is the original inventor of the
present, extensively used metal plough of Bardez. The first
piece was made by Bhikaro Mest, Mohan's grandfathe's brother
or granduncle, during the Portuguese days. Kirloskar's had
introduced an Indian version of a European plough in the
Indian market. Khikaro Mest bought himself a piece. The old
plough is still in the shed: its only concession to time has
been some scarring due to rust. From this piece, the Bardez
plough was born.

The Chari family is still referred to as 'Bhikaro Mestager'.
Mohan's father, Shankar Dattaram Chari, Mohan and his brother
Santosh -- who works with him in the smithy -- were brought
up in the working traditions of Bhikaro Mest.

His grandfather had expired when he was merely two. The pure
metal plough of the Charis, when it was first made nearly a
hundred years ago, cost farmers the princely sum of three and
a half rupees. Today, the same model costs Rs. 2500, due to
the high costs of iron in the market.

Each plough made by the Charis, if carefully maintained, will
last a minimum of 30 years. Farmers were reluctant at first
to switch from the wooden to the metal plough because they
were worried the metal tip might hurt the oxen's hind legs
during ploughing.

Today, the wooden plough is almost extinct, except
in areas like Sattari. When I sit with Mohan on a
rainy day, in front of the bellows, I can see that
all the equipment he needs to manufacture a new
  plough is available within the shack: the hammer;
the anvil; the charcoal; the bellows.

He purchases the iron sheets, nuts and rivets from the
market. The metal parts are first cut according to a standard
form, then hammered into shape after the metal is made
red-hot over the coals. Sometimes his wife will turn the
wheel that supplies air to the small open furnace fed with
charcoal, sometimes a passer-by or neighbour. This is an
honourable profession that can be found in any Goan or Indian
village.

The Charis have survived because they provide a service which
Government agencies or private companies have never been able
to master: producing low cost, well adapted tools that meet
the specific individual requirements of their customers --
and their animals.

The technical ingenuity of this craftsman is
amazing. I never knew, for example, that some oxen
refuse to turn left when ploughing a field, so for
their owners Chari will design a plough that
attaches to the right side of the handle with a
  curvature in reverse.

Ploughs are made to suit the height of the animals (small or
large). Different soils (clayey, sandy) demand a different
design. Chari can also manufacture and repair 100% wooden
ploughs. These are works of art. A wooden plough is assembled
from wooden parts crafted and assembled so precisely that
none of them will shift or dislodge under the hard pressures
of ploughing, since no nails can be used.

What happens in the Chari household when the ploughing season
ends? They shift to other jobs: metal work including the ever
popular window grill and gate, vehicle repairs, name-plating
on marble (a trade kept exclusively for Pradeep, the third
brother), carpentry including doors and lintels, and a host
of other miscellaneous jobwork including dog cages for animal
shelters.

Mohan's garage is the only

[Goanet] COMMENT: Stories that are too good to check (Siddharth Varadarajan, in The Hindu)

But even if the immediate target of Penpricks was the Goan media,
it has

[Goanet] Response to Green Movement has shades of Black by Sujay GupResponse to Green Movement has shades of Black by Sujay Gup

2008-07-01 Thread Flower2
Every dream has a tinge of a nightmare says Sujay Gupta in his Green
Movement has shades of black. Sometimes however, a luckless people wake up to
the chilling reality that the dream is in fact a nightmare. And this is the
naked truth that the people of Goa are facing today.

For the unfortunates living in mining villages, life in fact has turned into
one, long, living nightmare, where families are compelled to move residences
according to the piecemeal exploitation of the mining leases, which in some
areas have threatened entire villages. Water and air pollution and in some
cases, the end of agriculture as a source of livelihood are some of the other
hazards these hapless souls have to contend with.

It is interesting that Mr. Gupta's piece has failed to examine the role of
government policy makers and regulatory bodies, who are statutorily responsible
for protecting the environment, the interests of the people and the state, and
of course ensuring that the spirit as well as the letter of relevant laws are
implemented scrupulously. Whilst applauding people's initiatives in various
movements, Mr. Gupta has not seen fit to query why the people find themselves
compelled to constantly come out into the streets for causes like the agitation
against the Regional Plan 2011, anti SEZ and anti mega projects in the
villages, which Mr. Gupta himself has deemed as serious and genuine, if the
authorities are in fact doing their job as they are supposed to. Mr. Gupta
should understand that when people are obliged to seek justice time and again,
against a Government and its regulatory bodies who are all part of a callous
system that is constantly seen to be working at cross purposes to the interests
of the state and its people in collusion with lobbyists and the big moneybags ,
then trust in the system is undermined and destroyed. People understand that
the onus of protecting the interests of their land, environment and the
wellbeing of their community rests solely upon themselves because those they
have elected, have cold bloodedly abdicated their responsibility.

Mr. Gupta seems to believe that this is a fight between the people and the mine
owners, which is perhaps why he has mooted a serious citizen's watchdog to
ensure that illegal mining is prevented, but envisaged no role for the
Government and its functionaries who incidentally, are drawing salaries from
the public exchequer, precisely to perform this duty. Why hasn't the Government
addressed the forests that have been cut and the hills that have been raped?
Unless the regulatory bodies are turning a convenient blind eye, how are
illegal mines being permitted to operate in Advalpal? Is it not the duty of the
Government to periodically undertake a social and environmental audit of the
implications and fallout on the people of mining leases that have been granted
way back in Portuguese times? After all, the situation and the ground reality
in today's democratic milieu, is quite different from that which existed in
colonial times. And as he has rightly pointed out, mining is an industry that
by its very nature takes a lot away from the land and involves aa fair amount
of environment depletion. The mess today, is not because mining companies are
breaking the laws, or that environmentalists are encouraging the people to
stand up against the injustices in the mining villages. The root of the problem
is a Government that has shirked its responsibility. After all, the people of
Goa have not elected industrialists, mine owners or journalists however well
meaning, to represent their interests and protect their well being. And yes
Mr. Gupta, mining is harmful in our small state of Goa, because it is being
carried out in populated areas, badly affecting the lives of people living in
the villages.

Even if Mr. Gupta's revelations about Shyam Sundar Naik are true, he has not
enlightened us as to the fallout of the mining activities on Shyam Sundar Naik,
that necessitated the award of Rs.48,000 to him in compensation by the company.
Also it is interesting to know why a mining company feels compelled to lavishly
donate a large sum of money (Rs.11,44,000) if they have kept all the laws and
have a court order to prove it. And if their donation was purely philantropic,
why do they feel that Shyam Sundar Naik must refrain from speaking against what
he perceives as injustice. Did the mining company in question believe that they
had bought Shyam Sundar Naik's silence through their donation? If Shyam Sundar
Naik is contracted to the mining company, does his obligation to the company
negate his obligation to his community? Is his soul also contracted to the
company? These are all profound issues that must be pondered over by both Mr.
Gupta and the mining company whose case he represents so passionately in this
column. Those who have been actively involved in people's movements are well
aware that it is the oldest

Dear Cornel,
As you pointed out I should, I will explicitly retract my that you have not
used the word LIAR -- that you did not call Selma a liar.
I APOLOGIZE.
My stating, My humble opinion is that Dr. DaCosta should not have use the
word, liar can be taken as being incorrect and uninformed. I am not a
scholar as you are and do not wish to cause your reputation even the
slightest damage on this forum. However, I would still like you to see my
thread of though, although it may appear faulty.

In issue 776, I read the following bit in your post:
(This excerpt follows the figures you provide)
Let me finish by saying that the essence of what I
said about the middle classes not living in gated
communities in the UK definitely holds. It was the
opposite of what you said and my statistical figure
confirms this.

The inference that you make here suggested that Selma did not know what she
was doing and I INFERRED that as going beyond her misunderstanding; and that
she was essentially lying to bolster her claims. I should certainly not have
said that YOU called her a liar, I could and perhaps should have debated the
part above, about your saying that your statistical figure being the
opposite of what Selma's views pointed to. I could have and should have not
veered towards referring to you as a liar. I allowed myself to get tripped,
but I caused you hurt. I now take that hurt upon myself.

I am pleased to be part of this forum and realize that although all sorts of
issues may be thrown into the pot, I should stop even remotely expecting
myself to be able to stay on top of what is said, implied and conjectured.
To mean that I have to be even more particular with what I take issue and
interest in.

Once again, I humbly apologize. If there is any other way besides tending
this aplogy, that I may make reparation, do let me know.

I think Don Bosco School did a wise thing by showing Rape of Goa to their
students who are our posterity. No matter even if congress has developed
new

terminology for RAPE to be EYE TEASER.

I only hope the supports of new terminology will not get disturb if actual
RAPE takes place with their mother, sisters, sister-in-laws', etc. And
that

they will continue to call it EYE TEASER as is advocated by Congress /

Arwin--

As Rajan has described elsewhere there is lots of work to be done to carry
out investigations into the criminal activities already discovered (and to
be discovered). It will take professional staff to include investigators.
Once discoveries have been made, it will be necessary for the lawyers to
file these cases in court. As you rightly state, all buildings put up
through bribery and illegally must be demolished. A first step would be to
put together professional help. There are Goans in the U.S., Canada, the
Middle East and elsewhere who have expressed a genuine desire in
contributing very generously towards the establishment of such a group. It
is obvious that Rajan has only been able to scratch the surface through his
valiant efforts--and I dare say that he has put the whole issue of
corruption on the front burner for which we all owe him a debt of gratitude.
We need people on the ground to take Rajan's work to the next level--to file
suits in the courts where chicanery is involved or
suspected--relentlessly--so that the builders and the politicians are put on
notice that the people won't put up with such nonsense. The morchas and
protests do have their utility, but are soon forgotten--and the politicians
are aware of that. If a group such as this can be organized, I am
personally prepared to extend help and so are some of my colleagues in the
diaspora. It is unfortunate that due to personal circumstances we cannot be
physically in Goa--but we could be with Goans in Goa in spirit--and with the
essential wherewithal to ensure we move forward.

Any comments would be appreciated

Chris

Its Good News that the people of Colva have forced the Panchayat to say no
to all Mega-Projects. But I fear that the projects illegally approved will
eventually be allowed with the latter assurance. These Projects should be
razed to the Ground. I believe the Colva Panchayat or more so, the people
already have enough ammunition to do so. Colva can send across a strong
message to all the destructive builders, politicians their colleagues
through out Goa.

Mining cos asked to pay damages
2 Jul 2008, 0330 hrs IST,TNN

PANAJI: Mining companies will pay Rs 3.40 crore to 761 farmers from Surla as
compensation for crop losses. This is the largest ever compensation for crop
loss in the state.

While disposing of a petition filed by the Surla panchayat and two others, a
division bench comprising Justice S A Bobde and Justice R C Chavan on
Tuesday directed this compensation to be paid to the farmers. In the initial
phase, 502 farmers will receive the compensation. The rest will have to
prove their claims. Counsel for the petitioner S N Joshi said the claim of
259 farmers is disputed as they are listed either as owners or occupants and
not as cultivators. These claims can be settled by conciliation and the
amount be disbursed later, he pointed out.

The compensation amount has already been deposited with the court. The
deputy collector of Bicholim has been appointed as commissioner for the
disbursement.

The petition had been filed by the Surla panchayat seeking compensation for
crop loss due to mining activity. It named V M Salgaocar Mining Pvt Ltd,
Chowgule Co, Sociedade de Fomento, Salitho Ores Pvt Ltd, D B Bandodkar Pvt
Ltd, V S Dempo Pvt Ltd and Timblo Mining Pvt Ltd in the court. The
petitioners said that because of dumping of mining rejects, crops in
adjacent fields had been damaged and soil adversely affected.

[Goanet] Goa's green movement has shades of black

2008-07-01 Thread Cecil Pinto
FLY ON THE WALL
By Sujay Gupta

Goa's green movement has shades of black

Every dream has a tinge of a nightmare. Every revolution , has a hero.
And a villain. And every movement has a body of truth. And a body of
greed and misuse.

As proud believers and supporters of every genuine peoples movement in
Goa, it's a nightmare to live through times, when a section of
environmentalists, including some of the very heroes who continue to
fight Goas wrongs, have taken upon themselves the role of downright
but selective environmental bullies.

Selective, because the target's carefully orchestrated, are people,
companies and corporations, in the garb of an euphemism called the
mining lobby.

Last week, a serious issue of the havoc caused by illegal mining
companies and an urgent need to address it was hijacked, trivialized
and crushed by charges of a mining lobby nexus with Manohar Parrikar
and with Digambar Kamat, and the alleged role of yours truly of deftly
managing to make the Leader of the opposition and the Chief Minister
to make statements such as the presence of naxalite activity in mining
areas, to suit one of the biggest mining companies in Goa.

I humbly state, that I have, at least not yet, acquired those skills
and even If I do, they will be used to rid Goa of some of environment
destroying illegal mining companies as well as fake and compromised
environmentalists.

What followed was an orchestrated exercise by a lobby of activists
and their sympathisers to hold court and pass verdict on every single
issue such as my credibility, my act of compromising with miners, and
how I have suddenly turned traitor to the cause, simply because I
chose not to blur the lines between irresponsible activism and
journalism.

I am forced to start on a narrow myopic platform, because that is the
gutter level to which environmentalists like Claude Alvares and
bloggers who are afraid to bark with their signature and do so in the
dark, namelessly and shamelessly calling themselves Pen-Pricks; have
sunk to.

(I just wish they had not insulted the pen because that is a sacred
tool with which writers and thinkers work and pen pricks is a very
poor pretender and a false claimant to that tag).

I will first handle individuals and their roles in this story before
addressing key and serious issues at hand. At the root of this recent
upsurge against mining companies, actually a few and specifically one,
is a series of skirmishes and battles Claude Alvares has fought and
lost against the mining company and other companies managed and run by
it.

The two agitations at Advalpal and Colomb are areas where this company
has mines operating. In Colomb where the entire focus on how this
mining company had not acquired forest and environment permissions and
therefore should be stopped, there is a specific court ruling
declaring that the activities are legal. The court has even ordered a
specific injunctions preventing militant activists from entering the
mines and creating disturbances.

Now gentlemen and lady crusaders, irrespective of which side you are
on, a court ruling needs to be respected, if for nothing else than the
fact that Claude Alvares dwells, dabbles and professes legalities. So
if you respect the law, please do so even when the law finds you on
the wrong side.

Yes, there are illegal mines operating in Advalpal, where permissions
have not been acquired, yes there are fly by night operators who even
attempt to mine in 25 x25 square feet of land and make a fast buck,
and yes forests have been cut and hills raped, by people who have not
even sought permission. There is a need to agitate, protest and
initiate coercive action against those individuals and companies.

But if that is a genuine motive, why is that motive getting coloured
by a selective attack on one or select mine owners whose pictures are
painted black and they are selected in every speech and village corner
meeting for special verbal attack. And the irony is, that such genuine
mining companies have mined, created jobs, changed lives and bettered
livelihoods for decades, in an industry which by its very nature takes
a lot away from the land and involves in a fair amount of environment
depletion.

This leads to serious doubts that need to be answered. Doubts whether
a certain environmental lobby targets people and companies they cannot
do deals with and spares those with whom they do.

It all looks very pretty to some when a motley group of crusaders
storm offices and mines, call for bandhs and block roads. Genuine
tools of people protest. But I need to draw the attention of a wider
group of people like the readers of the Herald, of some of the
activities of some of these protesters. And I leave it to you to draw
your own conclusions.

There is a certain individual who is seen with the new crusaders led
by Claude Alvares and has in its ranks Sebi Rodrigues and others,
including a sensitive and good human being Minguel Braganza, in whose
eyes, I have lately

[Goanet] Why do some find it necessary to vomit in public?

I normally advise those who feel this repetitive urge of emesis - to
do so privately in the washroom. Why vomit in public? Unless you have
a psychosomatic problem.

If you need professional help - go get it.

Dear Jose,

You have clearly articulated what so many of us here in Goan
cyberspace have been meaning to say. Some individuals are consistently
using GoaNet as though it is some sort of a clinic for personal
catharsis and cure. In the process they seem to take great pleasure in
washing their dirty linen, and more importantly other people's linen
which they are not authorised to - as you have shown, in public.

An occasional outburst is understandable but constant whining about
one's circumstances of birth and caste etc. is the sign of a sick
mind. These people should seek professional therapy, and not burden us
with their disease.

My armchair amateur medical knowledge, assisted by Google, notes that
the eating disorders anorexia nervosa and bulimia, are frequently
associated with vomiting, usually self-induced. I wonder if you could
throw some more medical light on this so we can better understand why
these posters use the keyboard to purge themselves.

Or maybe you have wrongly diagnosed their ailment as psychosomatic.
Perhaps it is purely psychological. An attention-seeking mechanism of
sorts?

Cheers!
