 After chasing the wrong squirrel for a while, I figured out if I add a
 column and fill it with numbers, it loads and displays the table fine.
 Here's a fiddle:

 Is this a bug? Or did I just miss something in the documentation?

 these keywords are invisible to all search engines (Google, Bing, etc.)

 Is there a way to make keywords used in the charts indexable?
 If not, what is the recommended workaroud to make it so? Using them in

 There are two possibilities here:

 1. The rollout is in some kind of inconsistent state that is causing
 weird failures, or
 2. Something is broken with the new release, itself.

 I think the first problem is less likely now that more people are
 beginning to see the issue, but we did test the release before shipping it,
 and we have been using it internal for a few weeks now. Having a specific
 example that breaks would help us test this. I'll try AM's charts with the
 new release tomorrow when I'm in a better position to run some tests.

 In the meantime, I have rolled back the release. It will probably take a
 few hours to percolate around the world. My apologies for the

It will probably take

Re: [visualization-api] Alternative To Deprecated Google Chart Tools API

2014-06-17 Thread 'Jon Orwant' via Google Visualization API
For the benefit of others and to avoid confusion: Google maintains a
server-side API called the Chart Tools API, and a client-side API called
the Google Visualization API or Google Charts API. This forum is almost
exclusively about the *client-side* API.

Years ago we announced the year 2015 deprecation of the *server-side* API.
 That's the one where you provide a URL to chart.apis.google.com and get a
chart back. That's what this post is about.

The decision to deprecate the Chart Tools API was made a long time ago.
 Since then we've seen many posts like JavaJive's. And so, while I am
explicitly not promising anything, I will say that we anticipate having a
server-side solution very similar, if not identical, to the Chart Tools
API. We would love to undeprecate the server-side API, but need to be
careful since there might be some features we can't continue to maintain
under whatever new system we create.

I'll put it this way: if I didn't work for Google, and had a commercial
service based on the Chart Tools API, I would sit tight and wait to see
what Google does. Personally, I will be very disappointed if we can't
support simple charts like the Signal Profile feature at JavaJive's site,
which is pretty cool.

We'll update this list when we know more. It'll be a few months.

 Once loading has completed, and the relevant buttons enabled, there three
 available visual components to help align the aerial and predict the likely
 usefulness of the signal:
 A Google map for finding a landmark to point the aerial towards
 A UK Ordnance Survey map showing the signal path
 A vertical signal profile showing potential obstructions

 It is the last of these, which is obtained by pressing the Signal Profile
 button at the bottom of the form and is displayed at the bottom of the page
 beneath the two maps, that is of concern, because currently it uses the
 Google Chart Tools API which unfortunately has been deprecated by Google
 and will retire next year.

 Currently, the page assigns a very long Google URL such as the following
 to the src attribute of an image tag, and the Google Chart Tools service
 sends back a suitable image to go into the tag.

Re: [visualization-api] Google Charts Blocked From China

2014-06-27 Thread 'Jon Orwant' via Google Visualization API
Hi Ben,

We're not sure, but there are some indications that China has been blocking
many Google services. Some press reports are connecting this to the
anniversary of Tianamen Square, so it may be a short-lived phenomenon.

If it's not, it's hard for us to give advice on what to do, since we can't
tell exactly what is being blocked and how. For instance, one workaround
-- if you don't need the interactive features of Google Charts -- is to try
our server side charts (https://developers.google.com/chart/image/).

Another is to use a proxy. If you can do that, that's what I would try
first.

 Perhaps copy the playground source, remove the results section (at bottom)

 separate out the code for each chart into its own function, or you can
 combine them all together, eg:

 function drawCharts () {
 // code to draw chart1

 // code to draw chart2

 // code to draw chart3
 }
 google.load('visualization', '1', {packages: ['corechart'], callback:
 drawCharts});

 is functionally equivalent to:

 function drawChart1 () {
 // code to draw chart1
 }

 function drawChart2 () {
 // code to draw chart2
 }

 function drawChart3 () {
 // code to draw chart3

 function drawCharts () {

Just an update on the Image Chart API: we're not planning to turn off the
API in April. It's more that three years ago when we issued the deprecation
announcement, we warned users that we *might* turn it off three years
later. Right now it's not much of a burden to keep running, so we'll do
that.

Think of it this way: if we turn it off, we want to be able to say, hey,
we gave you three years' notice.

 What is the best way to do that ?

 (is it possible with google visualization or is there another library ?
 Zeta-components seems to work well, any idea ? )

 Thank you for your help !

The April 2015 deprecation date is when we reserve the right to turn off

have no plans to turn that off, and in fact released a new version recently.

Re: [visualization-api] Word Tree IDs

2014-10-27 Thread 'Jon Orwant' via Google Visualization API
Hi Josh,

Word tree isn't going to replace the org chart. There's no way to make the
org chart display horizontally, but you can use the allowCollapse option
and the collapse() method to make the fan-out of your chart more manageable.

 Hi Jon,

 Thanks for the reply. I actually have been using the Org Chart all along,
 but I was wondering if Word Tree was going to replace Org Chart. I
 remember reading that Org Chart was either going away or being overhauled,
 so I'm anxious to see what happens.

 In my scenario, I'm using Org Chart to show people, who they supervise and
 who supervises them. It's pretty simple I think. Some people supervise 15
 people, some people are new they don't supervise anyone. So my problem is,
 the chart ends up being like 15,000 pixels wide because each person's
 bubble won't align underneath another person's bubble. I'll have to post a
 screenshot. But what that means is, everyone (we're talking 100-150
 people) gets their own column in the chart. Therefore, it's so wide that
 it's not really presentable. I don't think it's a bug, but it would
 certainly make a huge difference if it could be worked out somehow. Picky
 picky, I know.

 But anyway, thanks for the message. I'll toy with Word Tree and we'll see
 what happens.

 Thanks,

 Josh

Re: [visualization-api] Question about Security and Privacy

Currently, data is only sent to Google when geocoding is necessary for a
map chart. Everything else happens inside the browser and Google never sees
it.

Re: [visualization-api] Charting a CVS File

2014-12-01 Thread 'Jon Orwant' via Google Visualization API
Elaborating on what Sergey said, another alternative -- and probably what
you want to do if your CSV data is unchanging -- is to convert the CSV data
by hand into a data table, so that everything is inside your JavaScript
program.

For instance, as a first step cut and paste your data like so:

var data = google.visualization.arrayToDataTable([

*...cut and paste your CSV here...*
]);

That won't work as is, but by looking at other sample charts you can
identify what tweaks you need to make (e.g., enclosing each line of your
CSV file in square brackets).

I would start by cutting and pasting one line from your CSV file and going
from there. That will enable you to iterate quickly, confirming what
changes you need to make before you deal with the entire file.

 the python one, which you can just start with python -m SimpleHTTPServer)
 and host both your page and CSV file over that. Unfortunately, I'm not sure
 I can explain detailed instructions for that over email, so if you don't

 My big challenge right now is related to your *...if **you have a URL

 the same folder as the page HTML file. I've tried to access it as
 file:///C:\Users\keb\Desktop\Charting\GoogleCharts/tempData.csv but
 that doesn't produce any results. I've also tried lots of variants of that
 without success, so I don't know if the file reference method is bad or the
 follow-on code is the problem.

 If you could fill in or correct my // Fetch the CSV code segment (see
 below in my original message) to show how to get the file and use it with

 Hi Ken,

 We actually have undocumented dataTableFromCsv support, which is built
 into our Query object. Namely, we expose two new options: 'csvColumns'
 (which should be an array of column types), and 'csvHasHeader' (which
 determines whether the first row of the CSV should be interpreted as a
 header row). The file will be interpreted as CSV if you specify the
 csvColumns option, so it should be fairly straightforward. One thing to
 keep in mind is that you can only load CSV files that are on the same
 domain as your chart.

  So, if you have a URL to your CSV file stored in a variable, call it
 csvUrl. That means that we would do something like the following:
 var queryOptions = {
   csvColumns: ['number', 'number' /* Or whatever the columns in the CSV
 file are */],
   csvHasHeader: true /* This should be false if your CSV file doesn't
 have a header */
 }

 var query = new google.visualization.Query(csvUrl, queryOptions);

 query.send(handleQueryResponse);

 function handleQueryResponse(response) {

   if (response.isError()) {
 alert('Error in query: ' + response.getMessage() + ' ' +
 response.getDetailedMessage());
 return;

 Does there need to be a 'number' value stated for each column in the data

Right.

Re: [visualization-api] Google Image Charts

The deprecation policy means that we *can* turn off the old Image Charts on
20 April. We will not. If you can change them to the Google Chart API, that
would be ideal, but there is no deadline for doing so.

know this is the case for maps, but read over TOS and it was not clear.

That's fine.

 2) Whats the limits we have around using google charts...

None to speak of. We have protections in place against DDOS attacks, but
any less-than-ludicrous usage will be fine. Major retailers and news sites
use Google Charts.

Re: [visualization-api] How to cite google chart in research article?

Avinash,

If you're asking how to provide an attribution to Google Charts, there's no
need to do that. But you can cite us as http://developers.google.com/chart/
if you like (and thanks!).

If you're asking how to provide a persistent URL to a specific Google Chart
of your own creation, that's up to you.

Re: [visualization-api] Re: Google Charts title/alt SEO? Will it be indexed well as an image file?

2015-10-12 Thread 'Jon Orwant' via Google Visualization API
Google Web Search and Image Search decide for themselves how they rank
search results. Owners of Google Services such as Google Charts have no
influence over how they do that, and our knowledge of how they do that is
quite limited.

There are plenty of third party sites that will advise you on how to
optimize your web site for Google, but I'm unaware of any that talk about
Google Charts. (Then again, I haven't looked!) I can say only that it would
make sense for a search engine to pay attention to the language in the
titles and axes of a chart.

My apologies for an answer that is both unhelpful ("I don't know and
couldn't tell you even if I did") and meta-unhelpful ("I can't even tell
you where to go to answer your question"). I tried to be
meta-meta-unhelpful by not answering in the first place, but guilt got the
better of me.

Re: [visualization-api] Depreciation of the Current Version

2015-09-22 Thread 'Jon Orwant' via Google Visualization API
There are two distinct products: Google Charts (dynamic, interactive
charts; what this forum is about) and Google Image Charts (static charts
where you pack your data into a URL and get a PNG in return).

Google Charts is *not* deprecated. It's used by a lot of Google services,
external usage is strong, and we're releasing a new version every two
months or so with improvements. No plans to deprecate.
Google Image Charts *is* deprecated as of April 20, 2015, which means that
we reserve the right to turn it off without notice. At this point we have
no plans to do so.

 We strongly recommend that you continue referring to the charts script

Soon, you'll be able to load geocharts in the way described on the
basic_load_libs page. In the meantime, if you want to use both at the same
time, you need to load corecharts in the way described on the geocharts
page. Sorry that this is confusing -- it's a temporary situation.

Re: [visualization-api] Re: Dynamic Icons in Image Charts (Deprecated)

2016-05-25 Thread 'Jon Orwant' via Google Visualization API
(Clarification for others: Image Charts are not Google Charts. Image Charts
is the older service that lets you pack your data into a
https://chart.googleapis.com/chart URL to make Google render a static PNG.)

I can't make any promises about how long we'll keep up our Image Chart
service. I can only say that we have no plans to turn it off at the moment.

Because Google Charts is a library (as opposed to a service handling live
traffic), it takes very little effort or resources on our part to keep it
available, and so I expect it to stay available for years to come. However,
that is not a guarantee.

I realize you want a guarantee, but I can't give one. All I can do is be as
transparent as possible about what the future might bring.

If you remove the # symbols from your URL, it'll work.

Re: [visualization-api] About Chart API License

2016-05-17 Thread 'Jon Orwant' via Google Visualization API
It's fine to use as is, although it requires an Internet connection to
work. No license agreement needed.

Attribution is welcome but not required. You can say "Created with Google
Charts" and that's credit enough for us.

Re: [visualization-api] QR Codes Information

2016-04-19 Thread 'Jon Orwant' via Google Visualization API
We make no promises about the long-term availability of QR code generation
in Google Image Charts. That said, we also have no intentions of turning it
off in the short term.

So, your call. Sorry we can't be more prognostic!

Re: [visualization-api] QR Codes Information

2016-04-20 Thread 'Jon Orwant' via Google Visualization API
Ah, now that's an interesting question. I do think that the phenomenon of
people photographing QR codes in order to avoid typing in URLs has peaked,
although I say that on the basis of industry gestalt rather than Google
logs. But hey, it's a barcode. They don't die. We'll continue to see them
around, even if it's just in situations where other barcodes would do just
as well, like on boarding passes.

My original response was ill-phrased, since it implied that Google might
decide to remove QR code generation from within Google Image Charts. That
will not happen. What might happen is that Google could turn off *all* of
Google Image Charts.

If that happens, I think you won't have too much trouble finding an
alternative solution. Chart generation can be difficult to do well, but QR
code generation is dead simple.

Re: [visualization-api] Access to chart.apis.google.com from firewall

We make no guarantees about IP ranges, sorry. While in general they're
static for our services, they can change with little notice, and so
resolving through DNS is the best way to go.
