[ha-Safran] Fw: Need by March 31: Jewish teens who like to write (and travel)!

2012-03-14 Thread Etta Gold
A request from reknown author Marc Tyler Nobleman -
http://noblemania.blogspot.com/2012/03/need-by-march-31-jewish-teens-who-like.html

I was thrilled to learn of an annual weeklong youth program that sounds like an
irresistible cross between America’s Got Talent and sleepaway camp. It’s billed
as “the premiere arts experience for creative Jewish teens.” It’s been running
for years.

Then I was honored to be invited as of its ten artists-in-residence in Houston
this year.

But we’ve just encountered a problem and we need to solve it by the end of
March (yikes!): we need more teens. Do you know any who like to write?

The program:

In short, JCC Maccabi ArtsFest is one of the most enticing opportunities for
creative youth I’ve ever seen.

Ten creative professionals in categories including Creative Writing,
Acting/Improv, Dance, Musical Theater, Culinary, Visual Art, Rock, and Jazz all
descend on one Jewish Community Center for one week to mentor a small group of
teens from around the country; the culmination is a variety show where all ten
groups of teens get to show off their stuff. It’s not a competition but rather
a chance for young people to learn one-on-one from experts in their field; the
teens take workshops during the day and socialize at night. Click here to learn
more and to read bios of the artists-in-residence (but read the rest first!).

The problem:

We need more enrollments or my category, Creative Writing, will be canceled—and
the deadline is March 31. The program is open to Jewish kids from around the
world ages 13-16. Cost is based on the city of origin.

How you can help:

Simply spread the word to any family you know with Jewish teens (specifically
any who like to write) and any Jewish institution that might be willing to
notify its membership. Forward this and/or direct them to this post:
http://noblemania.blogspot.com/2012/03/need-by-march-31-jewish-teens-who-like.html.
And please emphasize the need for immediate action!

If potentially interested, please contact one of the following right away:

a.. Stacie Graff, JCC Maccabi Experience Program Associate, sgr...@jcca.org,
212-710-6435
b.. Brittany Horwitt, 2012 JCC Maccabi ArtsFest Director,
bhorw...@erjcchouston.org, 713-729-3200 x3327

For my part, I can guarantee an experience that will have a huge positive
impact—and be loads of fun, too.

“I have known Marc and his work with children in schools for at least eight
years and I can tell you with complete honesty that he is the best, the very
best, in inspiring children. He is able to empathize with them (and adults,
also) to an incredible degree. As a matter of fact, he becomes a role model for
many of them. One wrote in his evaluations, ‘Mr. Nobleman’s name fits him. He
is a noble man.’ His books have the same kind of integrity. I cannot recommend
him highly enough.”

—Susie Mee, Director, Authors Read Aloud (a Learning Leaders program), New
York, NY

Thank you for your help,
Marc

[ha-Safran] Book Club Recommendation

2012-10-21 Thread Etta Gold
Greetings friends and colleagues,

I am writing to share information about a most unusual book I just read: The
Origin of Sorrow by Robert Mayer. This work of historical fiction is
remarkable in its juxtaposition of authenticity and modern sensibility. The
tale takes place in the 18th century Frankfurt Jewish ghetto and focuses on the
lives of a couple who ultimately become quite renowned, Guttle and Meyer
Rothschild. Their story is framed in mystery and peril as it relates the
goings-on of day to day life under extraordinary circumstances. Murder, mayhem,
and superb Jewish values emerge. Though a bit lengthy, this captivating story
is an ideal book club selection. Look for a more detailed review in the January
newsletter.

  NEWS FLASH!!!

AJL has created a Jewish Library Advocacy Kit to assist libraries as they
educate their communities about the value of their services. The kit includes
materials that can simply be handed to administrators, as well as documents to
be adapted and recrafted for each library's individual situation.

Find the Jewish Library Advocacy Kit on the AJL website at
www.jewishlibraries.org in the Resources section. It is a downloadable PDF
document. Feel free to use the ideas and information when creating advocacy
documents of your own, tailored to your individual situation.

Subject: [ha-Safran] Honors for our own David Hirsch!

I am passing along two announcements of interest—both about David:

1. David Hirsch, librarian at UCLA and member of AJLSC, is doubly honored
this year. On May 20, our AJLSC chapter is presenting him with the Dorothy
Schroeder Award, which is given for tireless and outstanding dedication to
Judaica Librarianship and the education of Judaica Librarians . We are all
looking forward to the gala event!

Information regarding donations in his honor can be found here at our website:
http://ajlsc.org/dschroeder.html

2. The second announcement is copied and pasted below:

__

It is my pleasure to announce that David Hirsch, a librarian in UCLA’s Charles
E. Young Research Library Collections, Research and Instructional Services, has
been chosen by the Librarians Association of the University of California, Los
Angeles, as the 2013 Librarian of the Year. This award recognizes excellence in
librarianship over the last twelve to eighteen months, particularly as it
furthers the teaching and research mission of UCLA, and meets the intellectual,
informational, and cultural needs of the university community.

The award, conferred during the Association’s spring meeting on April 24, 2013,
recognizes David’s continual efforts to enhance the Library’s Middle East
collections, helping to make the UCLA Library the premier West Coast
destination for Middle East scholars and researchers. David also worked on
three exhibits, on Afghan history, Armenian printing history, and Islamic
superhero comic books (which included a Library-sponsored event and film
screening). During the last year, David provided invaluable assistance in
finding a permanent home for the Tahrir Documents Archive in UCLA Library
Special Collections. In his unrelenting efforts to enhance collections, share
research, and partner with libraries in the Middle East, David’s bravery was
exemplified by a recent two week workshop at the University in Basra and
through his contributions to the development of Iraq’s libraries, despite the
obvious danger posed to an American traveling in that country.

The Librarians Association of the University of California is the system’s
primary organization for professional librarian and governance affairs.

Congratulations to David Hirsch, the LAUC-LA 2013 Librarian of the Year!

Sincerely,

Angela Riggio

Re: [ha-Safran] VHSs and cassettes

2013-05-07 Thread Etta Gold
Thank you all for your many responses! Just to keep you all informed, I did
receive a number of interesting ones:

There is equipment sold by library vendors that convert VHS to DVD which is not
too expensive. If there are a lot of them to convert to the new format, it
might be worth investing. The DVD will only be as good as the VHS. I did this
project here several years ago. Some of the tapes had bad tracking and static
but most came out well are still being used.
According to fair use in Title 17, copying to DVD is perfectly legal as long
as the VHS is then discarded. One replaces the other for purposes of
preservation and convenience but not to duplicate.

I haven't done it yet, but I have been inspired by how some people are using
old books to create tables, chairs, archways and art work. I'm thinking of
doing the same with the books, VHS and cassettes that we have. I thought it
would be a fun community project.

Jewish Prisoners Services International (JPSI) in Seattle used to accept
videos with Jewish content. Contact them to see if they still do:
http://jpsi.org/

We created a list and offered them free to our faculty. - after they had first
choice (and many were happy to have them), we packed them up and brought them
to Goodwill. we had offered them to so many organizations, - but to no
avail - no one was interested. We also toyed with converting them to CD's -
but too timely, then copyright issues, etc. I think Goodwill has a very diverse
customer base. not all people buy them for personal use. - many would buy
and then re-sellyou never know!

I am reformatting the VHS that are needed by our teachers into DVDs but due to
copyright law, you MUST keep the original. So we are keeping a lot of the VHS
as required.

To answer your question - we are keeping them. For a lot of the items the
only copy we have is the VHS, so we obviously don't want to get rid of them...
But we do have a TV with a VCR here in the library so people can view them.

Subject: [ha-Safran] Curriculum Suggestions for 3-5 grade?

I would like to expand our small Religious School library program to our 3-5
grade class (yes, all in the same small class) this year. I already meet for a
short time with each of the younger classes - about 15 minutes each Sunday -
and am planning to add a session with the older children. Since this age
means moving beyond my reading stories aloud to them, I'm wondering if anyone
has any suggestions for activities, books that might work for discussion, or
other ideas for what I might do with the kids. Their classes will be working
with Year 5 of the CHAI curriculum.

Any suggestions would be very welcome!

[ha-Safran] NAPHNET: Hebrew instruction in braille

Subject: NAPHNET: Hebrew instruction in braille

Dear NAPH members:

My name is Jane Vincent, and I'm currently working with a blind student at the
University of Michigan who is very eager to learn Hebrew. I've been in touch
with a number of resources, including the Jewish Braille Institute and the
Society of Blind and Dyslexic Students in Israel, but we are still having
difficulty producing the materials he needs in a usable format without retyping
by hand. Brailling transliterated works seems promising, but many of the
original books that we are working from do not include vowels, making useful
transliteration very complicated.
Would you happen to know of any members who are experienced with braille
production, or who perhaps might have some of the books he needs in a braille
format?

Many thanks,
Jane Vincent

Subject: [ha-Safran] 2015 Fanny Goldstein Merit Award

Dear Colleagues,

On behalf of the AJL Awards Committee, I am pleased to announce that Joy
Kingsolver is the 2015 winner of the Fanny Goldstein Merit Award. A
justification for Joy's award is presented below. Please join the Committee in
congratulating Joy!

All my best,
Aaron T.

Justification for the Nomination of Joy Kingsolver as the 2015 Fanny Goldstein
Merit Award Recipient

The Association of Jewish Libraries (AJL) Awards Committee is delighted to
award the Fannie Goldstein Merit Award to Joy Kingsolver, the Association's
longtime archivist and parliamentarian. As archivist, Joy has carefully
assembled and organized the crucial documents of the Association's history,
including minutes of meetings, photographs, conference papers, and ensured
their safekeeping for posterity. As parliamentarian at numerous AJL meetings,
she has displayed her expertise in the rules of order and guided participants
on proper procedures to ensure that the appropriate rules are followed fairly
and that multiple voices are heard. Joy has also played a similar role in the
many Board and Council debates and votes that have taken place via e-mail.

Words like ensure and make sure are crucial in understanding the importance
of Joy's contributions. All too often, those who work to allow others to shine
are overlooked. Joy has performed her challenging roles with her
characteristic understatement, modesty, professionalism, and grace. In this
the year of AJL's Jubilee conference, the AJL Awards Committee feels that it is
especially fitting to honor a member whose work helps us better understand our
own history as Hebraica and Judaica archivists and librarians, keepers of the
Jewish book and of Jewish papers, and helps provide access to that history for
future generations of librarians and scholars. The world of AJL and our
profession more broadly will be better understood thanks in no small measure to
the tireless efforts of Joy Kingsolver.

Joy, we thank you for your work and we honor your achievements!

Respectfully submitted,
The AJL Awards Committee
Aaron Taub, Chairperson
Joan Biella, Member
Fred Isaac, Member
Amalia Warshenbrot, Member

[ha-Safran] Poet needed

2015-02-09 Thread Etta Gold
Greetings, Safaranim ~
Does anyone know of any poets that are especially popular with young kids and
might consider visiting our Beth Am Day School? The Day School has begun a
marvelous new program of a School-wide Enrichment Day. Since April is Poetry
Month, the organizer of this event would like to bring in a poet - preferably
someone who's got a good sense of humor. This program will take place the end
of April and there is a limited budget for covering the expense.
So, if you know of someone who will bring the gift of poetry to help our
students celebrate, if you have had the experience of bringing a poet to your
school, please let us know.
Thank you so much,
Etta and Danielle

Society for Crypto-Judaic Studies
25th Anniversary Conference
19-21 July 2015, Miami, Florida

The SCJS: A secular venue for the descendants of crypto-Jews, scholars and
other interested parties to network and discuss pertinent issues.
The Society for Crypto-Judaic Studies (SCJS) celebrates its 25th year with a
stellar assembly of speakers and artists, drawing from international and
regional locales, in Miami, Florida.
The event begins with the SCJS-sponsored Genealogy Workshop on Sunday, July 19,
with Miami-based genealogist Genie Milgrom, author of My 15 Grandmothers and
How I Found My 15 Grandmothers; Schelly Talalay Dardashti (New Mexico), founder
of Tracing the Tribe, Sephardic genealogy expert and US Genealogy Advisor for
MyHeritage.com; and Bennett Greenspan (Texas), founder/CEO of Family Tree DNA,
a popular research center for DNA genetic genealogy testing.
The conference promises to be memorable, says conference chair Matthew
Warshawsky, thanks in part to the location. Miami, the gateway to Central and
South America, is a great resource of crypto-Judaic history currently under
exploration. Many speakers and participants with Spanish-language heritage will
bring their cultural legacy with them.”
Diverse panels feature SCJS members and academics sharing experiences,
insights, and personal stories. Among the celebrated speakers is Ruth Behar.
Born in Havana, she is the Victor Haim Perera Collegiate Professor of
Anthropology at the University of Michigan. Known for her writings in English
and Spanish on the search for home in our global era, she explores the
convergence of cultures.
SCJS welcomes Ainsley Cohen Henriques as keynote speaker. A Jamaican
genealogist, he has researched his own family tree and helped found the
Jamaican Jewish Archives at the Kingston Jewish Heritage Centre, as well as the
Jamaica Jewish Genealogical Society (1999); and a 25,000-name database.
The Judy Frankel Memorial Concert on Monday evening spotlights an artist whose
music has been influenced by his or her converso experience. This year, the
artist is vocalist Susana Behar, whose Cuban/Turkish/Venezuelan heritage fuels
her passion for her ancestral music, the Ladino language, and the echoes of
exile of faded Sephardic songs. The public is invited. Tickets will be sold at
the door.
Meals and beverages are included with registration fees, beginning with the
Sunday dinner event through lunch on Tuesday. Partial registration options are
also available.

Dr. David A. Wacks will be the Martin Sosin Address to Advance Scholarship in
the Crypto-Judaic Arts speaker. He is Associate Professor of Spanish and Acting
Head of Romance Languages at the University of Oregon. His talk,
Crypto-Judaism and the Question of Human Agency in Sixteenth-Century Jewish
Thought, addresses the experience of living as a Christian openly and as a Jew
inwardly during the 16th century and how it left a profound impact on Jewish
thought and how human action, not mere providence, drives the historical
process.
Special guest Jo Ann Arnowitz, Executive Director and Chief Curator of the
Jewish Museum of Florida-FIU will present, The Immigration Story, a brief
history of the Museum and an overview of more than 250 years of Jewish life in
Florida.

Visual artist Marilyn Lande (Denver, CO), an educator and cultural arts
specialist, is also an accomplished sculptor and mixed-media artist. She hopes
to broaden the view of what can be considered Jewish art.
The Haggadah Transcending Time – The Story of Sephardic Jews is Lande's art
book created to tell a story of Sephardic Jewish life in Spain and Portugal
from the 10th century to today, reflecting where Jews and conversos lived,
creating positive Jewish lives. She is also known for her Jewish History in

2015-10-01 Thread Etta Gold
Hi ~ While I cannot answer any specific questions about the periodicals you are
seeking, dear Amalia, my friend Genie Milgrom is the "go-to" person for all
questions regarding this subject. Here is her latest email:

In the last few years, many descendants of Crypto Jews have contacted me with
their personal stories and in most of them I have read of "coincidences" in
their lives as they realized they had this ancestry that I do not see as
coincidences at all but of something deeper, perhaps a genetic memory that
brought them to the situation they are recounting. We have decided to compile
these stories in a publication. There are many stories so all submissions will
not be published and anonymous stories will not be considered. Please send
these to Genie Milgrom at
spanishances...@aol.com. You may send in
English or Spanish.
Vamos a recopilar
estas cuentos personales en una publicacion.Hay muchas y por eso, todas no
pueden ser publicadas asi como historias anonimas no seran consideradas. Por
favor enviar esta informacion a Genie Milgrom en Ingles o en Espa~ol a

Dear Amalia:
The title is "El Timon, Revista Continental," or "Timon, Revista Continental."
It was published from February 22, 1940 to June 15, 1940 (17 issues total). The
magazine was officially edited by Cesar Calvo. The official author was Arthur
Dietrich. It was financed by the Nazi propaganda machine through the German
embassy in Mexico. The funds were distributed by a German press attaché by the
name of Walter Dietrich. The magazine was edited by Jose Vasconcelos (who was
the real author/director) and the subject of my thesis. The publication came
abruptly to an end because the Mexican government wanted it stopped. Any help
that you can give me will be greatly appreciated.
 Thank you so much

[ha-Safran] A generous offer

2016-05-26 Thread Etta Gold

I am deeply saddened to announce that Temple Beth Am's Founding Rabbi Emeritus
Herbert M. Baumgard passed away last month. He was a renowned author, scholar,
teacher, lecturer, idealist, and fervent civil rights activist. The collection
of books in his office is massive, and his family is planning to make a
generous donation to the organization or institution that will accept the total
collection and establish a memorial library in his name. There are
approximately 1,000 books to be sent and the family will fund the delivery as
well. Please contact Daniel Baumgard
dbaumg...@ima-re.com<mailto:dbaumg...@ima-re.com>
- for further details.

Thanks,
Etta Gold

[ha-Safran] FW: Name this book and help a friend......

2016-05-09 Thread Etta Gold
Can someone help us out here? This came to me from a lovely patron:

It's pretty sad to become frazzled over a book title but I've become obsessed
with locating it. A while back I read
a book about a young girl in Europe who gets a job working in a wealthy house
hold and eventually works her
way up to working for the owner in an art gallery. She eventually owns the
gallery during the war and meets
Hitler and then has to work with him to exist. It was a great book and I cannot
remember the title or author.
Does anyone remember?

Subject: [ha-Safran] Now Playing in Theaters Nationwide and at the AJL
Conference in Charleston: Dough!

Attendees at the AJL Conference in Charleston will have the opportunity to
attend an exclusive screening of the new film Dough on Monday evening, June 20
at 8:15pm.

Jonathan Pryce (Pirates of the Caribbean, Game of Thrones) and Pauline Collins
(Shirley Valentine) star in this hilarious new comedy that shows you don't have
to be baked to make some Dough! Curmudgeonly widower Nat Dayan (Jonathan Pryce)
clings to his way of life as a Kosher bakery shop owner in London's East End.
Understaffed, Nat reluctantly enlists the help of teenager Ayyash (Jerome
Holder), who has a secret side gig selling marijuana to help his immigrant
mother make ends meet. When Ayyash accidentally drops his stash into the mixing
dough, the challah starts flying off the shelves and an unlikely friendship
forms between the old Jewish baker and his young Muslim apprentice. Dough is a
warmhearted and humorous story about overcoming prejudice and finding
redemption in unexpected places. UK, 2016; English; 94 minutes. Distributed by

[ha-Safran] Temple Beth Am Sunday Salon

2017-04-27 Thread Etta Gold

Please join us this Sunday for a remarkable presentation by Peter Tarjan:
Date: Sunday, April 30, 2017
Time: 10:00 am - 12:00 pm
Location: Adult Reading Room, RAMBAM Center (Library)
Temple Beth Am
The Janet z"l and Richard Yulman Campus
5950 N. Kendall Drive, Pinecrest, Florida 33156

Transplanted Lives
The Adventures of Young Jewish Immigrants from post-Fascist and
Communist Hungary to the Free World Following the 1956 Uprising

Susan V. Meschel and Peter Tarjan bring us their stories along with several
others' accounts of seeking freedom and escape from persecution.

The majority of the protagonists had survived the Holocaust in Hungary and had
written about their wartime experiences as children, and post-war experiences
as teenagers in two earlier collections in 1992 and 1998. These are their
recollections of escaping from Hungary, the land of their birth - where they
never had real roots - following the 1956 Uprising against Communist rule.

Their family backgrounds represent a broad range and so does the spectrum of
careers at the time of writing their stories more than a half century later.
The subject seems to resonate at this time when millions of displaced persons
seek a better life in freedom and security around the world.

What is your synagogue’s most successful adult education program (even if the
library is not involved in it).

Subject: Looking for a home for a Rabbi's Library

Dear Ms. Gold,

I found your contact information on the Association of Jewish Libraries home
page as the contact for South Florida. I write on behalf of a local rabbi,
Jacob Luski, who is retiring from his post of many years as rabbi of
Congregation B'Nai Israel<http://www.cbistpete.org/> here in St. Petersburg.
Ideally, he wants to place his library of over 1,000 volumes in a synagogue or
academic library. Here at Eckerd, we are not capable of taking the entire
collection, but just parts of it. Rabbi
Luski<http://www.cbistpete.org/who-we-are/rabbi/> wishes to donate it in full.

I know the University of Florida has an excellent collection. Do you have any
ideas of where I could suggest Rabbi Luski offer his library?

Sincerely,

Lisa

[ha-Safran] FW: Adolph Mulman memoir

2020-04-14 Thread Etta Gold via Hasafran
Greetings, AJLers ~

I hope everyone is safe and well and that we can get beyond this awful
current situation soon.

I do have a question from a genealogist who has located some information
that he would love to expand upon.

He discovered this distant relative who was the author of an autobiography
that he is trying to locate. Does anyone have an idea of where or how this
can be found?

If so, you may respond to Yoram Millman yora...@aol.com
