the issue is with outgoing mails sent by localusers to

As Sandip said, you should make a separate domain or even a subdomain like
office.abc.net and use that for local. You can set up rules or aliases
that [EMAIL PROTECTED] should go to [EMAIL PROTECTED] and that will be delivered
locally. If an email shows up as [EMAIL PROTECTED] and there is no alias for that,
it will be SMTPed out to the abc.net MX.

the non local user in the domain abc.net my postfix
rejects the messages saying user not exists which is
obvously true but the mail needs to be delivered via
dns to my isp's mailhost.
Use a different domain for your internal use (like abc.off), configure
fetchmail to rewrite the envelope recipient before sending mail to the
local postfix server (fetchmail global parameters smtpaddress, AFAIK).
Configure postfix to make this domain as the local domain.

Downside is that mails sent to even local users using the original
domain will be sent out to the Internet and downloaded again.
This is absoultely the wrong the way. Look at:

[ilugd] Need Suggestions for Text-to-Speech softwares

2004-04-08 Thread Kunal Singhal \(Linux\)
Hi Everyone.
This is my first post on this mailing list.
Since I have attended LinuxAsia 2004, I have been trying to learn Linux as much as
possible and also helping other people in my area to move to Linux. To do more RD on
Linux, it involves reading alot of documentation and online resources on the computer.
This makes it very stressful for my eyes.

So can anyone suggest some good text-to-speech softwares which have a more human like
voice output. Because the most of which i have tried till now have a very computerised
voice, which is not good enough to read out a book or anything like that.

I thank in advance anyone who replies to my mail.

Interesting. fallback_transport seems to be the way to go. :) I should
be reading up the postfix hacks more often.

Quite a postfix specific solution though. Solves the OP's problem in any
case.
Umm...more of PostFix feature. That's why I choose particular MTAs in
particular cases - depeding on the feature set they provide.

Varun, while you could address the OP's problem with this Postfix hack
what do you do when you are not using Postfix as in this case? Take up
the absolute wrong way? ;)
Nope. Generic solution for all MTAs: Create aliases/rewrite rules for
offsite addresses. E.g., for sendmail, in /etc/aliases:

offsiteuser: [EMAIL PROTECTED]

E.g. Domain is: abc.net, create a hostname like mail.abc.net, which
points to the IP[s] of the MX.

The downside of this this is that the backup MXs would not be used in
case the primary is down, but there are two solutions for that:

- Set up the DNS to return IPs for mail.abc.net same as the MXs in
round robin.

- Setup the mail.abc.net as a CNAME pointing to abc.net. That way the
MX resolution for mail.abc.net would be the same as for abc.net. Never
tried it and it *might* fail on some MTAs, which start looking at the
DNS query reply in detail instead of accepting the returned IPs.

This approach would have the side effect to changing the envolope
address to mail.abc.net for mails to offsite users that come from a
particular site. Depending on how you see it, that's a feature/bug.

With Exim you can do this by setting up routers/directors/transports
accordingly.

Anyone know how to do this in sendmail, without using aliases?

I hate qmail, and never looked at Courier. And, yes, I don't know how to
do this with M$ Exchange.

Also, if you really need to create a local domain, I highly recommend
creating it as a legitimate subdomain, e.g. delhi.abc.net - lets you use
dynamic DNS, and in my opinion, looks better.

afaik, fedora's system configuration tools are GTK (Gnome) based
(atleast were in redhat 9.0), so removing .kde directory will not be a
good idea. unnecessarily the user settings will be deleted.

[ilugd] 2 problems, RH9

2004-04-08 Thread The Little Magazine
Hi,

I installed RH9 on a new machine on April 1 (big mistake, I hear you). The
hardware is Krypton board, 128 MB RAM, 40 GB Seagate Barracudda. On boot,
it spits out reams of these messages, at the end of which the system resets
the HDD and continues to boot normally:

kernel: hda: dma_intr: error=0x84 { DriveStatusError BadCRC }
kernel: hda: dma_intr: status=0x51 { DriveReady SeekComplete Error }
The system is running slower than expected, but no other visible problems.
I'd like to know if anyone else has seen this problem and resolved it, and
if there can be data corruption if the machine is run in this state.

The second problem is networking through Samba with Win 98 machines. Samba
is the domain master browser and Win 98 machines are set up for multiple
users. The network is fixed IP over a tcp/ip hub. The Linux machine
accesses shares on Win machines OK. From a Win machine, the Linux box shows
up OK in Network Neighbourhood, with the correct server string. But if you
click on it, up pops a dialog saying that the \\server\ is not reachable.
And after that ALL Win machines are thrown off the network. Quite dramatic.
What gives?

Thanks

looks like ilug-delhi is rolling with plans to build a flash mob

people will be invited to bring in their pcs, whether linux or windoze

gnulinux that allows clustering, will be used to boot the pcs and make
them into nodes.

our first, on-the-fly, supercomputer.

this event will doubtlessly make news, and make history.

would be really exciting if Linux User Groups across india also get into

let's start this race.
1) which ilug is the first to make the flash mob supercomputer
2) who builds the fastest
3) who has the largest number of nodes.
4) how would these compare to india's fastest supercomputers?

It wasn't elitism, and it certainly wasnt looking down. Which is why i
termed it as personal and admitted it was provocative. maybe i could
explain it as growing up seeing one face of things, and then the face
changes completely.
An analogy comes to mind ... suppose everyone here starts speaking only
English. Someone who lived here 2 cents ago when only Hindi was spoken
(hypothetically) might wonder - is this India ? For him, it has changed.
For the guy born today, this is how it is. (Please dont bring Sonia
Gandhi in here now !) There's no elitism in this. maybe its just
old-fashionedness, nostalgia ? or the-way-things-were-when-we-grew-up
syndrome.

Sarvax also assumed several things in my earlier mail.
No, the cybercafe guy didnt install Linux. And no, my (non-existent)
granddad doesnt load Konqueror to browse. I open Opera (now FireFox) for
him and he browses.

Anyway, my real point in the end was that to be a linux user (sorry if
that term hurts anyone), Linux should be your preferred OS. That thought
was ignored in all the replies. Perhaps I am again wrong there since
some of us may also like FreeBSD or Solaris a lot and cant really
decide, but use linux enough to be called Linux users.

In conclusion, it seems most people feel its okay to operate a linux
system to be counted as a linux user. You need not like it, or know that
it is linux, or know much about Linux, or even care whether Linux
survives/grows (no sarcasm at all).

[ilugd] ilug-d's first ad-hoc, on-the-fly supercomputer

2004-04-08 Thread Shehjar Tikoo
Hi all,

I think, for starters we can do what has been done by
flashmob. Then after we've gained some experience with
this we can go on to other fields like, Genome/Gene
decoding..etc.

So LINPACK it is.

Next, we could even go on to create our own ISO,
instead of using flashmob.

Lets have a discussion on this on the day of the
meeting(whether all agree on flashmob+LINPACK
combination.)
The Flashmob website has also put up a basic
requirement for participating systems.I think we also
need to do this, and maybe be a little more stricter
to prevent a flashmob on our venture.

Also I propose that we rename this thread to something
like ILUGD-SC or ILUGD-Cluster:XXX
where xxx could be the sender's specific topic.

Regards,
Shehjar

As exciting as it sounds, I would personally keep it on a low profile, at least until
we have accomplished our objective (even if partial).

I would say lets stay focused on this project and, this project alone. Keep the specs
to the bare minimum, keep the media and other distractions out, and just make sure
that we have a working system when we are done with it.

There will be plenty of opportunities to invite media and other LUGs afterwards. In
fact, we should host a formal, well-prepared presentation detailing the project...but
only after we have made some significant progress.

Best wishes and good luck to all those involved in this exciting project,
Nishi

 Hi Everyone.
This is my first post on this mailing list.
Since I have attended LinuxAsia 2004, I have been trying to learn Linux as
much as possible and also helping other people in my area to move to Linux.
To do more RD on Linux, it involves reading alot of documentation and
online resources on the computer. This makes it very stressful for my eyes.

So can anyone suggest some good text-to-speech softwares which have a more
human like voice output. Because the most of which i have tried till now
have a very computerised voice, which is not good enough to read out a book
or anything like that.

I thank in advance anyone who replies to my mail.

a) If all is set for this month's meet, would someone please post it at
ILUG-D site?

b} I have had someone ask me if we would be willing to run his banner at
ILUG-D site. Personally, I would say 'no' but I haven't replied him back
 yet. What do you say?

 2) who builds the fastest

 supercomputers?

this will be so cool! we'll have supercomputers
 being built on weekends
 across india.

Guruji, please keeep a low profile untill we do the
project. It is not a easy thing to do unlike linux
installation (probability of us failing is very high).
To be true we have to do lot of work before we can
have a true flash mob computing.

Once we have done this we can share our experience
with the other groups and help them make clusters
better than ours.

Might I suggest using the cluster for something more mundane. A few uses
from top of my head

- Compressing a 3 gb file using bzip2

- Resizing 500 tiffs and converting them to jpegs with ImageMagick

- Compiling Apache or any other project with a big code base.

- If we can have a game of quake2/doom that would be the best use a
cluster can be put to ;-)

Only the pre-flashmob meet has been decided so far, will add it to
event list.

My first reaction also was No, but thinking about it a bit more, why
don't we see if the following is possible:

Have someone new sponsor the monthly ILUGD Meet each month. Define
what resources they would have to provide. Have their banner run for
the duration of that month.

Of course, even if we agree that this is doable we'd still need to do
tons of work in terms of both policy and logistics before we could
implement it, but how does it sounds in principle? Please feel free
to flame if you feel that this is $stupid_idea('2004') :)
