[IRCA] KGA ecletcic new format - Sports Hip Hop.

2019-01-16 Thread Bill Harms
Geesh talk about an eclectic format.  Just a few minutes ago at 12 Noon
PST, 16 January 2019, KGA switched its format to Sports and Hip Hop.
They are branding it has "103.5 The Game. Sports and Hip Hop."  I wonder
how well it will go over in Spokane. At least they seem to be keeping
their KGA Call sign.

Are there any other stations in the USA with this format?

Re: [IRCA] [dxld] AM radio struggling to keep listeners.

2014-09-03 Thread Bill Harms
I understand Brandon. However, the conservative talk and sports radio
aside, what will AM radio offer to listeners in the future.? My adult
children, around 30 years old give or take, do not listen to AM radio
and rarely if ever listen to FM radio. I know that my experience is
anecdotal, but the ratings suggest that fewer and fewer young people are
indeed listening to AM radio.

I have to wonder what form AM radio will take in the next 15 to 20
years. And I love AM radio, and have for over 50 years.

The CPRV QSL's are archived at the University of Maryland's Library of

[IRCA] Radio station changes call letters to WRG3 in support of Redskins quarterback

2013-01-11 Thread Bill Harms

WASHINGTON -

Washington, D.C. radio station WPGC wants Robert Griffin III to know
he's got their support!

The station changed its call letters to WRG3 Friday.

The change will be in effect all weekend and fans can call in to share
their words for the Redskins star as he recovers from knee surgery.

This is the first time in the station's history that it has changed its
call letters.

At about 1104 or 1105 (11/8), I started to hear some audio on 747, and
then my computer crashed. (Maybe it couldn't handle the hot DX from
Asia). Anyway, I am sure we had Japan, but I have little proof to back
it up. It was someone talking presumably a woman, I am guessing in
Japanese. I am not a list logger, but the temptation to count this is
intense. How else could it be? At Least Brett has a recording of it.

We also had a solid carrier and audio on 945. Hopefully, we can ID the
language at least.

[IRCA] TP hunting on the East Coast

2009-11-07 Thread Bill Harms
Bruce Portzer dropped into the Starchat #mwdx chat room as the TA's here
were started to fade out. We concentrated in some possible frequencies
which might yield TPs, 693, 747, and 774. All three frequencies have
potent TA's on their, and for a while there is an overlap time when it
is sunrise in NW Asia and Sunset in NE Asia. So I tried to sort things
out to see if I was receiving either late TAs or Early TPs. It looks
like they were mostly lingering TAs. However, a couple of times I
thought I MIGHT HAVE HAD some Japanese talk on 693 and 747.

More later after I am had a chance to listen to the recordings.

[IRCA] Excitement in New Jersey - Reception of TPs

2009-11-07 Thread Bill Harms
This morning (11/7), we tried for Trans-pacific stations, and had a
flurry of exciting activity right around dawn (Details will come later).
Audio was heard on at least two channels, but not strong enough to be
100% identifiable - 747 (Japan) and 1134 (South Korea or Japan).
Carriers were seen on 594, 693, 774, 828, 1098, 1206, 1566, and 1575
(plus maybe some more).

We did not have the most optimum antenna set-up and will try to make
some changes for tonight.

Delaware is not an easy cinch here in Maryland. That is because in many
instances, closer stations in Maryland on the same channels, cover the
DE stations. It takes at least a moderate level of DX skill to get
them. One a scale of 1 to 10, 10 being a local and 1 being the most
difficult to hear, I would rate getting most of them as a 7 or 8.

[IRCA] IBOC reception

2009-10-17 Thread Bill Harms
This past week a new toy, a Sony XDRF1HD HD Radio Tuner arrived in my
radio shack. For the past couple of days I have had a chance to play
around with it.

I already like it. With it, I am able to tune the first adjacents on
FM. AM seems okay enough, but it does suffer a little bit from overload.

Last night I tried it out on several IBOC stations in this part of the
country. It was able to decode at least five different stations that
were received by skywave. WBZ was the easiest of the bunch. This
evening I managed to decode WOR for about one minute. So it is possible
to DX decoded IBOC signals, as challenging as it is.

As I have some time, I will write a more comprehensive report. lately.

KBS's QSL policy.

As a matter of policy, KBS QSL's only their foreign service programs. In
most cases, a report for a domestic program gets trashed by the domestic
service personnel, or sent to the Foreign section where they trash it.
However, you might get lucky and your report ends up with someone who
will take the time to answer your English language report. That said I
have received a 100% response rate for Korean language reports,
including both Seoul and regional stations.

WDCT 1310 in Fairfax, VA was Korean when I heard them the other day. I
assume it would be the same at night, but there nighttime signal is not
strong enough to make it to Baltimore at night normally. Nearby WASH-FM
is on 97.1, but I don't think they would have Frank FM.

Perhaps the way to go here is to simply start eliminating 1310s that we

WORC-MA so far. I'm quite certain that my local WRSB-NY isn't it (though
I'll check again when I get home tomorrow), and I'll be within range of
Dearborn MI and Alliance OH on the way home today in order to rule those
out as well, though I'm quite certain neither one is it.

What else can we eliminate for certain?

[IRCA] Interesting low power station in

2009-07-27 Thread Bill Harms

http://tinyurl.com/ksufnh

This is an interesting listing in the FCC data base. It is described as
a LP Broadcast Auxiliary Low Power which is not a TIS. I heard it in May
2004 on 1680 and it was functioning as a TIS, and I am not sure if it is
still on the air. It was sponsored by the Dallas Downtown Improvement
District and broadcast a 1:40 long loop tape with announcements for
current events in Downtown Dallas.

I could not find any call letters for this station. Does anyone know if
calls for this station exist?

Note this is not the same license as the DFW TIS, which happens to be
licensed to the same frequency 1680.

Hi Derek,

Thanks for your comments.

My main antenna at Grayland for the July 12th trip was an 8' (diagonal)
tuned passive loop on a collapsible PVC frame, which was one of the
experimental creations here this spring. It is one of several variants of the
standard PVC Loop, for which a general article is being wrapped up. Besides this
collapsible frame variant (designed for travel in a compact car), there have
been 18 and 2' tabletop PVC Loop variants, 3', 4' and 5' indoor models, a
7' longwave model, 6', 7', 8' and 9' (side) monster MW models, and
waterproofing designs.

John Bryant has advised me to finish up the basic PVC Loop article as a
priority project, and deal with the different variant articles later. The
performance of the 8' PVC Loop at Grayland was a real thrill, and it has
certainly earned itself a spot in my future DXpeditions. With a total cost of
only about $65 in parts, it provides a tremendous amount of gain for the $$.
John and I talked about running an A/B test with his Wellbrook Array against
the 8' PVC Loop, but we were kind of rushed for time, and never got around
to it during this trip.

Besides Sharina the Psychic on 4BC-1116, there were also strong MP3's
made of Tahiti-738, 4RN-792, 2YA-567, and KPUA-670 (in Hilo Hawaii) using this
8' PVC Loop, some of which I plan to upload to the Ultralightdx Yahoo file
site ( or are available to anyone interested).

I can't make out the third frequency.

What this means is that they were relaying the provincial level regional

[IRCA] No sign of WOON in Maryland

2008-12-21 Thread Bill Harms
Let me add Maryland to the list of places where WOON was not heard. I
just finished listening to my recording from 0200 to 0300 EST 12/21 and
did not hear even a trace from them. They have been heard here on
regular schedule before, so they were either a no show, or conditions
were terrible. I am leaning to the former over the latter.

790 ESPNs out there? It was perfectly listenable for a fair amount of time,
so I'm absolutely positive on the ESPN programming.

WPRV-790 is about 4 miles away and I'm right in their 5kw night directional

the WBBM-780 IBOC is an issue. Had to listen on LSB to escape the hiss.

The interesting part is that sometimes you guys sometimes get the
further eastern stuff better than we do here on the East coast, like
Radio Farda 1575. That is because it is going over the pole. I bet there
is more stations like, say Central Asia and Western Asia that you would
get better. Are they TA's or TP's? I suppose it depends on how you look
at it. Are they going over the North Pole to the left or the right?

[IRCA] Splicing files!

2008-11-29 Thread Bill Harms
I know this may sound crazy, but I decided to try to splice files
together assuming they have the same center frequency and the same
bandwidth. I recorded several files that met the above criteria and
spliced them with GoldWave, and it worked fine, with just a couple of
hitches. I wanted to do this because I these files were next to each
other in time. I had a problem with Spectravue cutting off in the middle
of recording (that is another issue), and I had to restart them. As long
as the restart interval is not too much, it doesn't really matter
significantly.

Anyway, the audio of the original recordings were still intact on the
spliced file. You can still scan through the file as normal. However,
the spliced file lost some of Aux information like the center
frequency and the original time stamp. Also, I don't know why but the
spliced file was a little bit wider than the original recordings
(originals - 150 kHz and spliced - 158.727 kHz.) For the center
frequency, if you enter the correct center frequency when you load the
spliced file and it works just fine. I don't know how to fix the time
stamp, so you have to live with the new one.

So, if you ever have a reason to splice files together, it is possible.

Now back to DXing.

It still holds true tonight. Conditions are not that great here despite

If you hear the generic ID there is no way of really knowing. But the
stations will broadcast their own regional programming at scheduled
times and you can be sure then. This happens more often in other
countries in the world, especially in Europe.

There is a break in the music, and the announcement, This is CBC
radio one.
As we all know, Canada will not give there call letters but once in a
blus moon, or never.

How does a person determine which station it is?
540 CBT GRAND FALLS NL 1 1 NDA VARIETY CBC RADIO ONE
540 CBK REGINA SK 5 5 NDA VARIETY CBC RADIO ONE

These are the only stations that I can find listed that are CBC radio one

I am not sure about today, but I remember while DXing in the 1960's and
1970's hearing CBR, CBX, and CBU all using their call letters constantly.

Re: [IRCA] Applications for two new AM stations in Toronto Area (960 and 1350)

On many days in the winter, CKNX is the 920 channel dominant here in
Maryland.

Actually, two suggestions come to mind for the CRTC. 1. Move CHIN to 1550 and
keep more of the signal in Canada. It is a major pest. 2. Either get CKNX to
move to FM or change its pattern. Nobody really wants to listen to it around
here, and it is getting to be more and more of a pest. It was boomiing in here
all last night and even at 0800 this morning.

[IRCA] No IBOC on 980

2008-11-12 Thread Bill Harms
WTAM 980 has turned off its IBOC. I am not sure how long it has been
off. Today is 11/12. 970 and 980 are now relatively clear in the daytime.

Local channels with IBOC are 600 WCAO, 630 - WMAL, 1010 - WWLB and 1400
- WWIN. All others are off as of this writing.

WTNT 570 might have IBOC, but it is too weak here in Elkridge to tell.
Also I can detect IBOC on WHP 580

[IRCA] carrier on 693 Part 2

2008-11-09 Thread Bill Harms
Okay, I tried again for the 693 carrier this morning between 0830 and
0900z using the same antennas as yesterday. I could not get an antenna
to the NW to work right, so I don't have a good bearing. Anyway, I had
some threshold audio this time and with a little work, I might be able
to get something out of it. The station had musical selections with
announcements. This does not sound like NHK that I remember from Korea.
There was only slight traces of a signal after 0900. This time, no
traces on 747 and 774. There was a 20 second or so blimp around 738, but
that could have been from 740's audio - a song hitting that frequency

Well, I am now leaning towards a lingering European. What are others
hearing at this time? West Coast DXers, what does NHK have between 0830
and 0900?

[IRCA] Interesting clip of CFZM 740

2008-11-09 Thread Bill Harms
I just happened across this interesting clip from CFZM 740 Toronto. It
seems they are bragging about having Canada's largest broadcast coverage
area and they explicitly mentioned the Northeastern States and southern
Ontario in their coverage area. At least one station is still trying for
a skywave audience.

[IRCA] Carrier on 693 at 0845

2008-11-08 Thread Bill Harms
I was getting a carrier on 693 at 0845z just now. Is this Japan? Is it
too late for Azores? I am recording right now or else I would go back to
see if there is any audio. I think there are slight traces on 747 and 774.

I need to get a west directional antenna up.

Re: [IRCA] [NRC-AM] Carrier on 693 at 0845

2008-11-08 Thread Bill Harms

Patrick,
It is certainly possible, but this will remain a mystery; I went
back over the recording and there was just too much slop and the signal
on 693 was just barely over the noise floor. Whatever it was, it has
faded out. It looks like this is something to chase later.

What is sunrise in the Azores anyway?
