I don't know the cause, but I know one cause for this behavior. I've seen it many times. It happens on laptops when the touchpad has not been disabled. It's very easy to brush against the touchpad with the palm of your hand when typing. That makes the cursor jump around. The user has no idea this

Try this. When you are in the correct folder, deselect all files with Control plus spacebar. Then press the application key or Shift plus F10 and select New from the menu that appears. Text document is one of the options. It will create the file with the filename highlighted to you can name it.

I don't think WordPad allows you to have multiple documents open at once. But when you want a new document just press control N the way you would in most other Microsoft programs. The difference is you will be prompted to save the first document before a new one is created if you haven't done so

Actually when centering a line of text you don't have to highlight the line. Just put the cursor anywhere in the line and CTRL+E will center the whole thing. Centering is considered paragraph formatting (like line spacing and the like) so it applies to the whole paragraph the cursor is in.
