Re: [JAWS-Users] strange announcement only in outlook and the folder structure
I have only been hearing the "Setting keyboard to U.S." message for the past week on only my Work laptop. It is random and has happened at various times when using Outlook 2010. I do not think that I heard it when using the Outlook Control+y, and I use that command all day long. Hi. This is no different than previous versions, you can't tab around in the jaws window like you can with window-eyes and cobra and narrator. In the jaws home use window, use the alt key to go to the menu bar. You should be able to get the options menu from there. Likely it'll be the first menu you get, so you ought to be able to press alt, and then press enter to open the options menu. Is this what you're looking for? Re: [JAWS-Users] upgrading windows 10 questions
don't think you need to backup unless you want to make certain everything will be the same if you have to revert. your computer will automatically save a copy of your previous windows system here are steps you can do if you want to revert To roll back to your previous windows , do the following. Go to control panel. In control panel go to the recovery option. At this point, use narrator since this area of windows 10 does not work with any screen readers including JAWS. Then use caps lock+right arrow to find the go back to windows 7 option. Press it. You will get a getting things ready screen, and then a confirmation of what you're about to do. Press the okay button. At this point, you will get a screen which says restoring windows, with no speech available. Just wait until you here the windows startup sound. Note: this option is only available a month after you upgrade to windows 10. Also, upgrading to an insider build and/or running defragment and optimize drives will delete the necessary files for the rollback to windows 7. -Original Message- From: Dacia Cole Sent: Sunday, September 20, 2015 5:24 PM To: jaws-users-list@jaws-users.com Subject: Re: [JAWS-Users] upgrading windows 10 questions Yes, Thank you for the detailed instructions I found them very helpful. Hi Dacia, Windows has a fairly good back-up utility that is very reliable. You can choose to make a back-up of your files, settings, or a complete image back-up of your computer, including operating system, settings, files and apps. Re: [JAWS-Users] windows 7 security center
Hi Kevin, No, it did not work, though I could have sworn I posted that to the list, but thank you very much for your help. Not sure if you saw my detailed account of how I managed to Install Windows 10, but I basically had to shut down a number of background applications I had running in order to make sure that the download/installation could go through as it was supposed to. I also shut down my anti-virus/malware altogether, as opposed to simply shutting down the active monitoring. I also took the added precaution of disconnecting any peripherals I had connected to the computer, making sure that it wasn't a possible hardware conflict. Having said that, I did manage to figure out that the SoundBlaster sound card I had initially thought was the problem wa snot after all. I still managed to install the Windows 10 upgrade despite it still being installed on my system, so I've deduced it was a software issue all along. If you have any questions, or if you need me to re-post my message that detailed what I did, let me know, and I'll send it to you off list so as not to place a second copy on the Jaws-users server. Yes, Thank you for the detailed instructions I found them very helpful. I plan to upgrade soon. The part of my question that didn't get answered is how to do a system backup so I can back all my stuff up on to my external hardrive in case my upgrade goes crazy and I lose things? Hi. If you don't use smart navigation, everything behaves as before. Say word, Say Character are not quick navigation keys, but those two are the ones affected by smart navigation, when smart navigation is in affect, these keys require two quick presses to allow you to navigate the text character by character or word by word. This is because the arrow keys otherwise navigate by element, so one press of right arrow for instance might go to a link, or perhaps a button, you won't be able to use arrow keys to spell the name of the button for instance if you don't understand what it says unless you do sayCharacter keystroke twice quickly, thereafter the arrow keys will read the name of the button character by character as you'd expect. Remember, smart navigation is off by default anyway, and that only really affects sayWord and sayCharacter keystrokes. They do recommend however that you use semi auto forms mode or manual, because navigation quick keys like h won't work very well if you have smart navigation on, and fully auto forms mode, because if you arrow onto an edit box it will enable forms mode, then if you try to use h it'll just type h in the box instead of going to next heading, and you won't be able to get out of the box with arrow keys I suspect (not verified) until you hit escape. Navigation quick keys really are not affected in any way by smart navigation, but the auto forms mode setting remains with the same 3 options as in jaws 16. If you leave smart navigation off jaws will behave exactly as it did in version 16 when it comes to web pages in every way to the best of my knowledge. Re: [JAWS-Users] when upgrading from win7 to win10
Hi Deb, Personally, I recommend using the Microsoft creation tool. The way of using Microsoft windows update, can be troublesome for Jaws. I do not use that way, so I can not say for sure, if my instructions will work with that way of upgrading. If you want an easier, and more pleasant experience while upgrading, I highly, recommend using the Microsoft creation tool, and following my steps. I have personally, upgraded 4 computers from beginning to end, using the Microsoft creation tool. I have assisted on many more w-10 upgrades. Re: [JAWS-Users] Uninstalling jaws....16 and 17
Hi. The easiest way to shutdown a computer typically is to go to the desktop with windows key+m, and press alt+f4 from there. This applies from pretty much any version of windows to my knowledge. Actually, there is an even easier way, hit the power button ( don't hold it in). Of course, that method depends on what the power button is set to do in the power options. Your Welcome, Please let me know how your upgrade goes using Microsoft windows update way, through the system tray. I have heard and experienced, that using the Windows update way, is very diffacult, let me know if it is as easy as using the media creation tool. Re: [JAWS-Users] upgrading windows 10 questions
Hi Dacia, No, you do not, because Freedom Scientific has stated that if you are upgrading from a Windows 8.1 computer to a Windows 10, as long as you have the latest version of Jaws 16, then you should be good to go, and don't need to re-install a thing. Now, if you wish to download the Windows 10 media creation kit, so you can get your copy of Windows faster, then that's your prerogative, but there are no utilities you'll have to download for Jaws. Re: [JAWS-Users] the Edge?
Hello all, Microsoft edge is experimentally support in JAWS 17 public beta 1, build 17.0.605. it is usable with tab, but the arrow keys don't work in it. If you really want to check it out, use the latest next snapshot of NVDA There, edge works almost completely, much like Internet Explorer, Firefox, and Google Chrome. Plugins don't work at this time in edge, so windows updates are not support at this time as well. . If you are running windows 10 and wish to use google chrome, you'll need google chrome canary, build 41. Hello, Each year I participate in the beta program. Generally over the beta cycle, I submit many bug reports. I wish there was a way for some of the information to remembered each year after the first report was sent. For instance, each time I submit I need to enter first name, last name, Jaws serial number, phone number, email address, operating system, etc. This is a lot of unnecessary typing on the part of the person submitting the report. Is there any way for these fields to auto populate? Re: [JAWS-Users] the Edge?
Wait for until in the future; FS says in one of their recent podcasts 113 in which Jaws17 features were described, to wait until FS fixes some issues with Edge; in the meantime to continue using either Firefox or Internet Explorer. It is not accessible at all at this time, forget it for now. Re: [JAWS-Users] Jaws 17 beta!
Hi, I am running win ten here and find the beta to be quite stable here. I only had 1 situatioln whare I had to reboot the system while using olutlook 2013. After that it is humming here with no problems. Hi. My experience with jaws 17 have been such that I'm glad this is still a public beta only. Try using 17 with a touch screen on a tablet computer, my atom 1.8ghz quad core asus t100 is sluggish in quite a few places not the least of which is skype for desktop. Try moving up and down your contacts, if you're lucky JAWS will only be sluggish and keep talking and focusing new items for several seconds after you take the finger off the screen, but I've had plenty of jaws crash and restart, or jaws shutdowns happen to me, the shutdowns are nasty because I have to connect the keyboard dock long enough to use buttons to start jaws again. While my t100 isn't exactly a speed demon, it does actually run pretty good, and it did ok with jaws 16. I think this ought to be fixable given that fact. I don't know if it has anything to do with extra code in use to play the tick sounds when touching no man's land or what. With the touch keyboard, if you put it in numbers mode and slide a finger over to the number pad, you get extreme sluggishness or crash and hopefully restarts of jaws. I duplicated this numerous times with my asus t100 running windows 10 (see specs above) and my 3ghz core i7 hozwell lenovo yoga 2 pro with 8gb ram running windows 8.1. Also, the touch keyboard is pretty dangerous on the t100 while trying to type someone a skype chat, because if you accidentally touch above the keyboard jaws will at least freeze temporarily, if not just crash and again HOPEFULLY restart. I say hopefully there because it doesn't always start up again, it just closes and you have to connect a keyboard or go back into laptop mode long enough to press the buttons you need to start jaws again. The touch keyboard is a lot better, but the touch screen support right now feels really gimmicky, 16 didn't have as many touch screen usability features but it is far more responsive and stable. My last issue is with smart navigation. If you have a page that uses a list of links but they're all laid out horizontally on screen even though they are indeed an html list, jaws insists on putting them in a vertical layout. You can reproduce this on freedomscientific.com near the top of the page with the navigation menu that contains items like home, products, services, downloads, support, dealer locator and shop. According to the jaws cursor (yes I really mean the jaws cursor), this is a horizontal list, a bar of links that span the top of the website, kind of looks like a menu bar. With the virtual pc cursor while you've got smart navigation turned on, this appears to be a vertical list. I have reported all of these concerns to fs via the 17 beta report form, but as that form is crazily short on the edit boxes limiting the input to too few characters to say all that I have to say, I wondered if there was a chance I'd get Erick's or someone's attention on here, especially if anyone else wants to confirm my findings, perhaps by duplicating my problem reports via the beta report form at least. I think the touch screen issues are likely fixable as jaws 16 is much better. Oh also, is anyone else finding web browsing to be more sluggish in internet explorer 11? Smart navigation is of course on, for elements and tables.
