I have only been hearing the "Setting keyboard to U.S." message for the past
week on only my Work laptop. It is random and has happened at various times
when using Outlook 2010. I do not think that I heard it when using the
Outlook Control+y, and I use that command all day long.

Hi Al, The answer is Yes, you need to reinstall Jaws 16 after upgrading to
w-10.
Here are the instructions again, I highly recommend following them for a
smooth upgrade experience.

*Upgrading to Windows 10 with jaws 16.
go to:
http://www.freedomscientific.com/Support/TechnicalSupport/Windows10Upgrade
Download the tool called utility tool, leave it in your download folder.
Download jaws 16.0.4350, leave it in your download folder for future use.
Download the Microsoft media creation tool at:
http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/windows10
On this web page, Go to download link now 64 bit version or 32 bit version
depending on what system you have.

Download the tool and save it to your download folder for future use.
Leave all three of these downloads in your download folder.
Now, if you have not reserved windows 10, please do so.
press enter on the get windows 10 icon in the notification area.
go down the page and fill in your email address ext. this gives you a
verification email.

Now, restart your computer.
check for updates, install any updates, restart to make sure you have all
the latest updates.

Now you are ready to begin the upgrade to windows 10.
Run the jaws utility tool, this will get rid of any jaws fragmented files
and so on from your system.

Run the media creation tool.
yes, for your users account warning.
Choose, update this computer now and press enter.
you are now in an ongoing and updating dialog which says:
Windows 10 is being downloaded, continue using your computer.
This could take anywhere between 30 to 60 minutes, depending on your
download speed.
When it is done downloading, it will go through several screens itself
updating your computer and will get it ready for windows 10.
Next, there will be a screen asking you to except the license agreement,
check the yes and press enter on next.

Again, the program will run through several screens by itself.
Next, press enter on install.
now you will have no speech, this install takes 45 to 60 minutes to
complete.

After 1 hour, press the Windows key+enter key to turn on narrator.
Wait for a few minutes if it does not come on right away.
Almost done.
press the next button.
choose express settings.
press the next button.
if done right, in about 10 to 15 minutes, jaws will come on talking on the
desktop.

very important, uninstall jaws.
Keep shared settings and personal settings.
Reinstall jaws, no need for a restart here, jaws will come on talking with
all your settings, except for 2 of them.

Redo your shortcut key, control+ALT+j.
Redo the setting to have jaws come on at the log-on screen.
For whatever reason if the media tool fails the first time.
Check for updates, restart, and run the tool again.

2015-09-20 Thread valiant8086

Hi.

This is no different than previous versions, you can't tab around in the
jaws window like you can with window-eyes and cobra and narrator.

In the jaws home use window, use the alt key to go to the menu bar. You
should be able to get the options menu from there. Likely it'll be the
first menu you get, so you ought to be able to press alt, and then press
enter to open the options menu. Is this what you're looking for?

Re: [JAWS-Users] upgrading windows 10 questions

2015-09-20 Thread Kevin
don't think you need to backup unless you want to make certain everything
will be the same if you have to revert.

your computer will automatically save a copy of your previous windows system
here are steps you can do if you want to revert

To roll back to your previous windows , do the following. Go to control
panel. In control panel go to the recovery option. At this point, use
narrator since this area of windows 10 does not work with any screen readers
including JAWS. Then use caps lock+right arrow to find the go back to
windows 7 option. Press it. You will get a getting things ready screen, and
then a confirmation of what you're about to do. Press the okay button. At
this point, you will get a screen which says restoring windows, with no
speech available. Just wait until you here the windows startup sound. Note:
this option is only available a month after you upgrade to windows 10. Also,
upgrading to an insider build and/or running defragment and optimize drives
will delete the necessary files for the rollback to windows 7.

Not sure if you saw my detailed account of how I managed to Install Windows
10, but I basically had to shut down a number of background applications I
had running in order to make sure that the download/installation could go
through as it was supposed to. I also shut down my anti-virus/malware
altogether, as opposed to simply shutting down the active monitoring.

I also took the added precaution of disconnecting any peripherals I had
connected to the computer, making sure that it wasn't a possible hardware
conflict.

Having said that, I did manage to figure out that the SoundBlaster sound
card I had initially thought was the problem wa snot after all.

I still managed to install the Windows 10 upgrade despite it still being
installed on my system, so I've deduced it was a software issue all along.

If you have any questions, or if you need me to re-post my message that
detailed what I did, let me know, and I'll send it to you off list so as not
to place a second copy on the Jaws-users server.

Subject: Re: [JAWS-Users] JAWS Smart Navigation: How much do you understand?

Hi.
If you don't use smart navigation, everything behaves as before. Say word,
Say Character are not quick navigation keys, but those two are the ones
affected by smart navigation, when smart navigation is in affect, these keys
require two quick presses to allow you to navigate the text character by
character or word by word. This is because the arrow keys otherwise navigate
by element, so one press of right arrow for instance might go to a link, or
perhaps a button, you won't be able to use arrow keys to spell the name of
the button for instance if you don't understand what it says unless you do
sayCharacter keystroke twice quickly, thereafter the arrow keys will read
the name of the button character by character as you'd expect.

Remember, smart navigation is off by default anyway, and that only really
affects sayWord and sayCharacter keystrokes. They do recommend however that
you use semi auto forms mode or manual, because navigation quick keys like h
won't work very well if you have smart navigation on, and fully auto forms
mode, because if you arrow onto an edit box it will enable forms mode, then
if you try to use h it'll just type h in the box instead of going to next
heading, and you won't be able to get out of the box with arrow keys I
suspect (not verified) until you hit escape.

Navigation quick keys really are not affected in any way by smart
navigation, but the auto forms mode setting remains with the same 3 options
as in jaws 16. If you leave smart navigation off jaws will behave exactly as
it did in version 16 when it comes to web pages in every way to the best of
my knowledge.

Also, yes, smart navigation will be new to JAWS 17.

Re: [JAWS-Users] when upgrading from win7 to win10

2015-09-20 Thread jim

Hi Deb,
Personally, I recommend using the Microsoft creation tool.
The way of using Microsoft windows update, can be troublesome for Jaws.
I do not use that way, so I can not say for sure, if my instructions will
work with that way of upgrading.
If you want an easier, and more pleasant experience while upgrading, I
highly, recommend using the Microsoft creation tool, and following my steps.
I have personally, upgraded 4 computers from beginning to end, using the
Microsoft creation tool.

I have assisted on many more w-10 upgrades.
If it were me, I would not try using the Windows update way of upgrading to
w-10, its too hard to follow along with Jaws.

Thank you, have a nice day...

Re: [JAWS-Users] JAWS Smart Navigation: How much do you understand?

2015-09-20 Thread valiant8086

Hi.
If you don't use smart navigation, everything behaves as before. Say
word, Say Character are not quick navigation keys, but those two are the
ones affected by smart navigation, when smart navigation is in affect,
these keys require two quick presses to allow you to navigate the text
character by character or word by word. This is because the arrow keys
otherwise navigate by element, so one press of right arrow for instance
might go to a link, or perhaps a button, you won't be able to use arrow
keys to spell the name of the button for instance if you don't
understand what it says unless you do sayCharacter keystroke twice
quickly, thereafter the arrow keys will read the name of the button
character by character as you'd expect.

Remember, smart navigation is off by default anyway, and that only
really affects sayWord and sayCharacter keystrokes. They do recommend
however that you use semi auto forms mode or manual, because navigation
quick keys like h won't work very well if you have smart navigation on,
and fully auto forms mode, because if you arrow onto an edit box it will
enable forms mode, then if you try to use h it'll just type h in the box
instead of going to next heading, and you won't be able to get out of
the box with arrow keys I suspect (not verified) until you hit escape.

Navigation quick keys really are not affected in any way by smart
navigation, but the auto forms mode setting remains with the same 3
options as in jaws 16. If you leave smart navigation off jaws will
behave exactly as it did in version 16 when it comes to web pages in
every way to the best of my knowledge.

Also, yes, smart navigation will be new to JAWS 17.

They are talking about doing the keystrokes twice quickly.
Where is the option to have it like it is in windows 7?

Respected friend, here is the detail of smart navigation of jaws 17.
Read and let me know how much have you understood!
Smart Navigation, More Efficient Interaction with Complex Web Pages and
Applications Today and in the future, users will be faced with an increased
need to work with complex web forms, tables, and even applications that run
inside of a web browser. This will impact your day to day interactions with
services on-line such as banking and shopping, in addition to many web apps
found in both companies and government agencies. For instance, Internet
Explorer can be used to log onto a Microsoft SharePoint server to
collaborate with other co-workers and create and store documents. The new
Smart Navigation feature is designed to make it more efficient when
navigating web-based applications with the Virtual Cursor as the LEFT and
RIGHT ARROW or CTRL+LEFT and
CTRL+RIGHT ARROW commands move by control instead of character and word.
This makes navigation such as moving across toolbars, tab strips, and
navigation links more like navigating around a desktop application. Pressing
the Say Character, Say Word, or Say Line commands twice quickly changes to
the traditional navigation by character, word, line, sentence, and paragraph
so you can review the text of the control. Smart Navigation resumes when you
press ESC, or move to a different control by pressing UP or DOWN ARROW or
TAB.

For example, if you use the LEFT and RIGHT ARROW keys to move across a tab
strip, you might hear JAWS announce something like; "Home tab selected,"
"Insert tab," and "Page Layout tab." If you wanted to review the items on
the tab strip character by character, press the Say Character (NUM PAD 5),
Say Word (INSERT+NUM PAD 5), or Say Line (INSERT+UP ARROW) commands twice
quickly. You can now navigate by character or word until you press DOWN
ARROW to move away from the tab strip to another control.

Smart Navigation is off by default. To turn it on, do the following:

Press INSERT+F2, select Settings Center, and press ENTER.
Press CTRL+SHIFT+D to open the default settings file if you want to use
Smart Navigation in all web browsers, or open the Internet Explorer or
Firefox settings file.
Type "smart navigation" without the quotes into the Search edit box.
Press DOWN ARROW to move to Smart Navigation in the filtered results of the
Settings

Hi.
The easiest way to shutdown a computer typically is to go to the desktop

pretty much any version of windows to my knowledge. Actually, there is
an even easier way, hit the power button ( don't hold it in). Of course,
that method depends on what the power button is set to do in the power

Hi Dacia,

No, you do not, because Freedom Scientific has stated that if you are
upgrading from a Windows 8.1 computer to a Windows 10, as long as you have
the latest version of Jaws 16, then you should be good to go, and don't need
to re-install a thing.

Now, if you wish to download the Windows 10 media creation kit, so you can
get your copy of Windows faster, then that's your prerogative, but there are
no utilities you'll have to download for Jaws.

Good luck.

I downloaded windows 10 through the microsoft website and used

were so many problems, I couldn't even use internet explorer nor
use windows update. I recomen you do it that way instead of

Hi Al, The answer is Yes, you need to reinstall Jaws 16
after upgrading to w-10.
Here are the instructions again, I highly recommend
following them for a smooth upgrade experience.
*Upgrading to Windows 10 with jaws 16.
go to:
http://www.freedomscientific.com/Support/TechnicalSupport/Wi
ndows10Upgrade
Download the tool called utility tool, leave it in your
download folder.
Download jaws 16.0.4350, leave it in your download folder
for future use.
Download the Microsoft media creation tool at:
http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/windows10
On this web page, Go to download link now 64 bit version or
32 bit version depending on what system you have.
Download the tool and save it to your download folder for
future use.
Leave all three of these downloads in your download folder.
Now, if you have not reserved windows 10, please do so.
press enter on the get windows 10 icon in the notification
area.
go down the page and fill in your email address ext. this
gives you a verification email.
Now, restart your computer.
check for updates, install any updates, restart to make sure
you have all the latest updates.
Now you are ready to begin the upgrade to windows 10.
Run the jaws utility tool, this will get rid of any jaws
fragmented files and so on from your system.
Run the media creation tool.
yes, for your users account warning.
Choose, update this computer now and press enter.
you are now in an ongoing and updating dialog which says:
Windows 10 is being downloaded, continue using your
computer.
This could take anywhere between 30 to 60 minutes, depending
on your download speed.
When it is done downloading, it will go through several
screens itself updating your computer and will get it ready
for windows 10.
Next, there will be a screen asking you to except the
license agreement, check the yes and press enter on next.
Again, the program will run through several screens by
itself.
Next, press enter on install.
now you will have no speech, this install takes 45 to 60
minutes to complete.
After 1 hour, press the Windows key+enter key to turn on
narrator.
Wait for a few minutes if it does not come on right away.
Almost done.
press the next button.
choose express settings.
press the next button.
if done right, in about 10 to 15 minutes, jaws will come on
talking on the desktop.
very important, uninstall jaws.
Keep shared settings and personal settings.
Reinstall jaws, no need for a restart here, jaws will come
on talking with all your settings, except for 2 of them.
Redo your shortcut key, control+ALT+j.
Redo the setting to have jaws come on at the log-on screen.
For whatever reason if the media tool fails the first time.
Check for updates, restart, and run the tool again.

Hi,

Here is my situation, I have two email addresses, and I was able to
configure both as pop.

However, I have two inboxes. One for each email account. I changed the
delivery location for one email, so now both email accounts will deliver
emails to one inbox. So now that is done, the other email address is still
there when I navigate down the folder list in outlook 2013 and has it's
inbox, drafts, sent folders etc. Am I able to hide or remove that?

Hi Dacia,

Windows has a fairly good back-up utility that is very reliable. You can
choose to make a back-up of your files, settings, or a complete image
back-up of your computer, including operating system, settings, files and
apps.

There's a web page that gives you step by step instructions on how to do
this below.

Hope this helps.

Hello,

FYI, just submitted the following to:

possibly if others feel the same, send it in.

Hello,

Each year I participate in the beta program. Generally over
the beta cycle, I submit many bug reports. I wish there was
a way for some of the information to remembered each year
after the first report was sent. For instance, each time I
submit I need to enter first name, last name, Jaws serial
number, phone number, email address, operating system, etc.
This is a lot of unnecessary typing on the part of the
person submitting the report. Is there any way for these
fields to auto populate?

Best,

Al

[JAWS-Users] Beta form automation

2015-09-20 Thread Alan Robbins
Hello,

FYI, just submitted the following to:

suggesti...@freedomscientific.com

possibly if others feel the same, send it in.

Best,

Al

Re: [JAWS-Users] the Edge?

2015-09-20 Thread Daniel
Hello all,
Microsoft edge is experimentally support in JAWS 17 public beta 1, build
17.0.605. it is usable with tab, but the arrow keys don't work in it. If you
really want to check it out, use the latest next snapshot of NVDA There,
edge works almost completely, much like Internet Explorer, Firefox, and
Google Chrome. Plugins don't work at this time in edge, so windows updates
are not support at this time as well. . If you are running windows 10 and
wish to use google chrome, you'll need google chrome canary, build 41.
Hope this is useful,
Daniel

Hello Al,
I totally agree with you on as many people submitting this request to
Freedomscientific suggestions. Do you have your SMA? JAWS 17 public beta 2
is coming out in ten days. You'll need your JAWS SMA up-to-date, as this
beta will effectively render JAWS as a demo, unless your JAWS SMA is
current. If not, you'll have to purchase a new copy of JAWS 17.

The fact that you had errors during the installation of CDEX would suggest
that it will not run on your system in Windows 10.

Hello all,
I have just upgraded to windows 10 professional, and today I installed the
public release of jaws 17. I'm very impressed. Now, I however have a very
odd problem with a CD ripping program, C dex. I tried to install with jaws
16. When I installed, it completely, totally crashed my jaws. I had to do a
jaws repair with narrator, completely uninstalled C dex and the narrator
voice in windows 10 is very clear. Now, is this a bug in jaws 16 with C dex
or has this been fixed with jaws 17? This was very frustrating because I got

a lot of DLL errors too when I installed C dex. I tried the latest version
of c dex 1.75 but there's no 64 bit version, to the best of my knowledge.
Any help with this would be greatly appreciated indeed. Thanks much!

Maheen.

Hi Howard,
Yes, I would reinstall Jaws 17 after upgrading to w-10.
Just in case you need some reminders of upgrading to windows 10.
*Upgrading to Windows 10 with jaws 16 or 17.
go to:
http://www.freedomscientific.com/Support/TechnicalSupport/Windows10Upgrade

Subject: Re: [JAWS-Users] Jaws 17 beta!

Hi.

My experience with jaws 17 have been such that I'm glad this is still a
public beta only. Try using 17 with a touch screen on a tablet computer,
my atom 1.8ghz quad core asus t100 is sluggish in quite a few places not
the least of which is skype for desktop. Try moving up and down your
contacts, if you're lucky JAWS will only be sluggish and keep talking
and focusing new items for several seconds after you take the finger off
the screen, but I've had plenty of jaws crash and restart, or jaws
shutdowns happen to me, the shutdowns are nasty because I have to
connect the keyboard dock long enough to use buttons to start jaws again.

While my t100 isn't exactly a speed demon, it does actually run pretty
good, and it did ok with jaws 16. I think this ought to be fixable given
that fact. I don't know if it has anything to do with extra code in use
to play the tick sounds when touching no man's land or what.

With the touch keyboard, if you put it in numbers mode and slide a
finger over to the number pad, you get extreme sluggishness or crash and
hopefully restarts of jaws. I duplicated this numerous times with my
asus t100 running windows 10 (see specs above) and my 3ghz core i7
hozwell lenovo yoga 2 pro with 8gb ram running windows 8.1.

Also, the touch keyboard is pretty dangerous on the t100 while trying to
type someone a skype chat, because if you accidentally touch above the
keyboard jaws will at least freeze temporarily, if not just crash and
again HOPEFULLY restart. I say hopefully there because it doesn't always
start up again, it just closes and you have to connect a keyboard or go
back into laptop mode long enough to press the buttons you need to start
jaws again.

The touch keyboard is a lot better, but the touch screen support right
now feels really gimmicky, 16 didn't have as many touch screen usability
features but it is far more responsive and stable.

My last issue is with smart navigation. If you have a page that uses a
list of links but they're all laid out horizontally on screen even
though they are indeed an html list, jaws insists on putting them in a
vertical layout. You can reproduce this on freedomscientific.com near
the top of the page with the navigation menu that contains items like
home, products, services, downloads, support, dealer locator and shop.
According to the jaws cursor (yes I really mean the jaws cursor), this
is a horizontal list, a bar of links that span the top of the website,
kind of looks like a menu bar. With the virtual pc cursor while you've
got smart navigation turned on, this appears to be a vertical list.

I have reported all of these concerns to fs via the 17 beta report form,
but as that form is crazily short on the edit boxes limiting the input
to too few characters to say all that I have to say, I wondered if there
was a chance I'd get Erick's or someone's attention on here, especially
if anyone else wants to confirm my findings, perhaps by duplicating my
problem reports via the beta report form at least.

I think the touch screen issues are likely fixable as jaws 16 is much
better. Oh also, is anyone else finding web browsing to be more sluggish
in internet explorer 11? Smart navigation is of course on, for elements
and tables.
