Re: [JAWS-Users] Excel cells now reading differently

2018-06-29 Thread amcarr1
Hi,

I have had intermittent problems like this with Excel back in Windows7 and
Excell2010, as well as Excel2016 on both a Windows 7 and 10 machine. This
particular problem has occurred less frequent that the other problems, such
as JAWS reading nothing, or only part of the cell contents. Yes, all of
these problems make it almost impossible to edit a cell. There are a couple
of things I do to work around these problems.

Make sure the Excel Window is maximized. Even if the maximize choice on the
menu is greyed out, I press enter when I am on it just for good measure.
Sometimes this actually makes a difference.

Use F2 to get into the cell contents. Move to the start of the cell
contents with control+home. Now right arrow until you get to the
information you want to change.

Use F2 to open the cell with the original text that you want to have an
edited version of in a different cell. Select All. JAWS may very well not
tell you that the text is selected. Copy with Control+C. Use Escape to get
out of the cell. Move to the new cell and open it with F2. Use Control+V to
paste the information into the cell, and now edit it.

As a last resort when nothing seems to be fixing the problem, Use F2 to open
the cell, select the entire contents of that cell, copy it and then paste it
into Notepad. Make the fix, copy it and then paste it in the new cell that
is open with F2. If you use this option, make sure you use Notepad and not
Word. The text format in Word will be brought over with the text when you
paste it back into the cell.

I've noticed that the problem gets worse as the day progresses. Relaunching
Excel usually does not fix it. A system reboot sometimes is a fix, but
there is no guarantee.

HTH,
Annette

Hello all,
I am using JAWS 2018 and Office 365 in Windows 10 1803.
I have just noticed the last week or 2 a very annoying event in Excel.
I have a Description in a cell as follows, "June 27 payroll draw"
When I go to that cell and press F2 and begin to arrow right each time I
arrow right JAWS reads me "June 27 payroll draw" instead of "J" then "U"
etc.
This is more than annoying because if I did not have a little residual sight
I would have no way of knowing where the cursor is to delete the 7 and
replace with 8.
Is anyone else finding this in Excel recently?
I feel like the little white ball bouncing between Microsoft and VFO's
paddles of "improvement."

2018-06-18 Thread amcarr1
Hi,

Use Insert+v to open the JAWS quick settings

Navigate down to Reading Options
The first item under that level is Cell Verbosity.
Rotate through the 2 options by pressing space bar.
You might be able to press Enter at this point to except your changes and
close the dialog box. I Tab to OK.

Note: there are a couple of Reading Options if I remember correctly.

Dear all,
Do anyone know of the command or keyboard shortcut to toggle or change the
way jaws read while I am in the cell of a table?
Like example, as I move downwards of the column, it will tell you which row
number its in. and if I move left or right, it will tell me which column
number.
The thing is, I don't wish to know that. Is there a way to toggle the info
or some other info I can get out of it?

I really don't know what to search on the jaws help to get the info I wanted

Do let me know if possible

2018-06-14 Thread amcarr1
I agree, using "Quick Settings" is the way to deal with column and row
titles. This will automatically read the title as you navigate the
spreadsheet. As great as this feature is, it can be a bit temperamental.
Sometimes the settings do not set after you have selected what you want.
They also get unset for some unknown reason.

You can also use quick settings (JAWSKey+V), go down to Title Reading and
tell JAWS to read the column heading automatically when you move into the
column.

Earlier versions of Excel allow the user to specify column and row titles by
the combination insert/alt control R for column titles and C for row titles.
The titles can be saved but occasionally wipe out and you have to re-do.

Hope this works for Excel 2018

I've had a number of issues with the responsiveness of JAWS on my Dell. A
technician updated the RealTech driver to the latest, and it did not fix all
of the problems. We resorted to changing to the generic sound card driver
and there were significant improvements. However in the past 2 weeks after
there was some type of update, I'm having all sorts of problems with JAWS
being clipped, the volume jumping all over the place, and little crackling
noises. I just have not had the time to get someone to check out the sound
card driver situation.

Re: [JAWS-Users] Spell Check in MS Word 2016

2018-06-05 Thread amcarr1
Spell check in Word is a bit tempormental. As already stated, you cannot
use the Alt key combination to change, ignore, etc, but it still works in
Outlook. I find that when in Word just pressing the letter C for Change,
etc. does not work. I then resort to Tabbing to the button I want and
pressing Enter. Sometimes this does not work as there is a significant
delay in getting a response to executing a command. I resort to pressing
Escape and start over.

Does anyone have an idea on how to get the spell check to read the word in
context? I resort to exiting out of spell check, and navigating around the
document or message until I find something that seems to be the word in
question.

Wayne,

You seem to be asking at least two questions. First, spell-checker does work
in Word 2016, but it operates a little differently. For example, to accept a
changed spelling, I press the letter "c" alone instead of alt-c. MS Word
2016 calls the alt key in this context an "accelerator."

Second, you can stop Word from making corrections as you type. Press alt-f,
then t, then arrow down to "proofing." From here, you tab through the
options. I suggest tabbing through all of them to find out what they are
before you start making changes.

Note: Although Word on my system requires that I not use the alt key when
using the spell-checker, spell-checker works as before when I'm in Outlook
2016. I have Outlook set to use Word when I write messages, so it's possible
there are settings in Word that I haven't explored. But except for the alt
key and some other variations, I find Word 2016's spell-checker works just
fine.

Hi folks! This issue is an oldy but a goody, and one that hasn't been fixed

I have two windows 10 computers, and many times JAWS will not say anything

password. Sometimes, I have to load narrator to find where to put in the
password. The behavior is inconsistent at best.

I wanted to post this to the list, and see if there is anything I can do to
make JAWS work better in this situation. Is there a setting that I need to
check, either in Windows or in JAWS? Any help would be appreciated.

Hi Mike,

Based on what I have figured out, the black on black announcement from JAWS
is not accurate. Visually it is black on white. I have not played with
actual font colors and backgrounds to see how JAWS reports seeing the
colors, but I have found that using the "highlighter" JAWS accurately
reports the highlight color and the text as being black. I wasted a lot of
time trying to figure this out and got nowhere. I finally snagged a
co-worker who was walking by my office and borrowed their eyes. They
reported that everything looked fine on the screen as well as when I printed
it out. I've not checked any of this out in Excel.

Hi Mariam,

There are many ways to attach a file to an e-mail message. Here is one of
my favorite methods.

Open Windows Explorer with Windows Key+e.

Navigate to the file you want to attach. If you want to attach multiple
files from the same folder, navigate to the first file, hold down the
Control key, press the down arrow until you get to the next file you want
and then press the Space bar while still holding down the Control key.
Continue holding down the control key and using the down arrow and Space bar
until all files are selected.

Use the copy command Control+c.

Go to your outlook Inbox. Do not open any files.
Use the Control+v paste command.

Like magic a new message will open, the file(s) will be attached and you
should be in the To field.

HTH,
Annette

JAWS left click button but it doesn't seem to tick this box.
I tried pressing enter and return as well.
Has anyone come across any similar issues and found a way around?
The application for the Realtek Waves seems to be very poorly written
accessability wise.
I Have tried searching for the jack selection option in other ways e.g. in
control panel, sound and under the advanced and properties tabs to no
effect.
Even tried searching the web for a registry entry but I have had no luck.
I Am also having issues with the Dell DW15 dock, when you plug in speakers
to this, it will work for a while and then the sound card will drop out.
I Have updated the system bios, device drivers and firmware etc and the same
thing still happens.

Any thought from anyone else with a similar setup would be very much
appreciated!

Re: [JAWS-Users] Sorting a 2010 Excel worksheet

2018-02-07 Thread amcarr1
Greg,

I modified the original instructions. See if this helps.

Instructions

You need to select all of your data, including the column headings.

Use your applications key to bring up the context menu.

Select sort.

>From the Sort menu, select custom.

You are now in a dialog box which JAWS does not read well. Use the tab key
to move around in it. The most important things you need to find are as
follows:

--The checkbox that indicates whether or not the top row is a headings row
for the columns of data, or if it is actual data. If you have column
headings, make sure it is checked.

--Tab until you get to a combo box, or maybe it is a list box, for which
column you want to use for sorting. JAWS can be very uncooperative with
reading the contents.

--There are 2 more combo/list boxes that allow you to set information about
sorting on this column I.E. A-Z, Z-A, ascending, descending, etc. Depending
on what you want your sort to look like, you may not need to deal with this.
Again, JAWS is not always cooperative with reading this information.

Now you have to add a level to your sort. Use the Tab key and go past the
Cancel button until you come to Add a level. Use space to select.

Now when you continue tabbing through the dialog box you will come to a
combo box that is labeled "Then by". This will have all of your column
headers listed. Just like before there will be 2 other combo boxes that
allow you to change other details about sorting on this column of data.

Figuring out which column header goes in the first level and which one goes
in the second level usually takes some playing around. The way things are
worded makes me think the sort will work differently than it comes out. I
usually run each sort separately just to avoid frustration. Someday I will
take the time to play around with it.

HTH,
Annette

Hi team,

I have a question. I have different folders with emails in them, but what
I'm noticing is one folder when entering it, I must CTRL home to the top of
the list but all the other folders I'm placed at the top after entering the
folder.

To those using outlook, what do you suppose is the issue?

Re: [JAWS-Users] Bit Locker

2018-01-30 Thread amcarr1
Hi Michelle and Brian,

I am also fighting with BitLocker. Sometimes I am successful with the count
and wait method and other times I am not. When I do not get to my desktop
successfully, I do a FaceTime call with anyone who I can find is available,
or I use my Aira Glass.

I must say, I am facinated with how we each are having a slightly different
experience when dealing with BitLocker. Right before my laptop is ready for
me to start the login process, I hear JAWS start to announce it's original
message, but it gets clipped off. I count to 15, and then start the various
steps. I am using a Dell 7470 with windows10. I as well find it a bit
frustrating to not be able to hear if the laptop is on.

Hi, Michelle, Brian Zolo here in Columbus, Ohio. Bitlocker is definitely a
pain as I have to use it as I am an employee of the department of defense.
The only way that I cope with it is to count to twenty once the computer
starts and then put in my pin number. I do have a braille display so once I
know that the computer has started which I can tell as my braille display
will give its manufacturer name and nodel when windows first starts and
that's when I then start counting. Once I put in my pin number and wait
several seconds, the computer then will give the windows start sound if it
doesn't, I then have to backspace 7 times to re-enter my pin number and then
again press enter and then the computer usually starts up. It certainly is
frustrating and we've even checked with Microsoft to see if there's a
solution. They advise that there isn't one at this point. Your employer
could putyou in a special security group and disable bitlocker but the
department of defense has a rule that any laptop that is sued for telework
must be encrypted so that's why we have to use bitlocker. We used to use a
product called safenet and there was a registry tweak with that program
whereby we would hear a tone and series of beeps which was our auditory
indication for entering the pin number. Once you'd hit enter, you'd then
get another series of tones to let you know that you pin had been entered
correctly. There was another set to indicate that you hadn't put in the
correct number. I hope that this will help as I definitely know how
frustrating it is when there's nobody sighted who can assist you. Let me
know if I can be of further assistance. BZ!

Hello,

I truly hope someone on the list can answer this one. Recently, Bid Locker
was installed on a new computer my employer provided me for telework and
it has given me the absolute blues!

When I turn on the computer, JAWS does not speak. So how am I supposed to
know when to attempt to log-in? I had the Help Desk call Freedom Scientific
to get instructions on starting JAWS at Start Up. However, that does not
work. Plus, with laptops being much quieter now, I cannot even determine if
the thing is on! Any suggestions or comments?

Right now, I make sure I am aided by my roommate prior to him leaving for
work, but, if I allow the computer to go into sleep mode, I am lost and the
balance of my work day is compromised. I just want to telework like I used
to prior to all this security. Help!

Thanks,

Michelle

Let me add, that the dongle needs to be inserted into the USB port prior to

Welcome my good man to our little corner of the world.

Now I will try to answer both of your questions. First a dongle contains
your authorization for JAWS. The idea is that it stays connected to your
machine the entire time you are using it. Then if it is removed JAWS will
not be activated on that system and only run in 40 minute mode. Think of a
dongle as a portable license for JAWS that you can take with you. For
example to another computer to work on for a friend who is sited but has
JAWS on his or her system for when you need to use it.

JAWS pro or home will work on any version of windows, but if you own all of
your computers and do not work on any of them for another person and get
paid for your services then you most likely are qualified for JAWS home
which is far less expensive.

With luck I have helped you, if not just let me know what is not clear
enough for you.

forward to learning all I can on here since it has been several years since
I used Jaws as my main screen reader, thus hoping to refresh my memory on
how certain things work etc. I'm in the process of getting a Jaws license --
from my employer, and they tell me that in the package, it'll come with a
CD, and some sort of USB drive. Is this USB drive the Dongle? if so, how
could I transfer the activation key from the Dongle to my Hard drive, so as
not to always have the USB drive in, making space for when I need to use my
regular Flash drive, or is the Dongle meant for only used in this way, and
not transferred? Please understand that it has years and years (since the
floppy disc era) that I haven't activated a Jaws license, thus technology
has changed a lot! Lastly can I use Jaws in 40-minute mode while my license
arrives, so I can refresh my muscle memory on how different tasks are done?
I ask this because the time I tried using a Jaws 40-minute demo, the
computer would always launch Jaws on starup, and no matter what I did, thus
I had to uninstall Jaws to get things in order again.
thanks for having this list still around, and looking forward to info.

[JAWS-Users] JAWS Behaving Badly

2017-12-07 Thread amcarr1
Hi All,

I am using Windows10 on a Dell 5440 with JAWS2018.10.42. Sorry about the
incomplete JAWS version, but as you will see, this is one of the several odd
behaviors from JAWS. Below are the steps I am executing along with comments
about JAWS behavior

*   Cold boot computer.

* Comment - Windows10 initial screen silently comes up.

*   JAWS announces "JAWS Professional".

* Comment - Login screen comes up and JAWS is silent with no evidence
of it still being running.

* Use many key combinations in many different combinations of
execution (Tab, Control+Alt+Delete, F6, Alt+Tab, Control+Alt, all four arrow
keys, Home, End, & Enter).

* Comment - Still nothing from JAWS.

*   Execute Control+Windows key+Enter to start Narrator.

* Comment - Narrator immediately finds the Password entry field.

* Type in password and JAWS Eventually announces "JAWS Professional"
and narrator announces "Narrator Starting".
* Execute Capslock+Esc to turn off Narrator.
* Windows key+M takes me to the Desktop.

* Comment - I do this because sometimes JAWS repeatedly announces
"Lost Focus".
* Comment - JAWS appears to be working relatively well to navigate,
launch programs and use those programs. I'm not going to go into the
various down-Falls of JAWS in these applications except for spell check
described below.

* When I Execute some JAWS commands while on the desktop, as well as
when application windows are open and in focus, nothing happens.

* Insert+JAWS, cannot find JAWS in the Task Bar, System Tray and
Running Tasks.
* Insert+F1 brings up the JAWS commands for the Application in focus.

* Insert+J, Space does bring up the JAWS command search feature.
* The JAWS command Insert+Control+V tells me the version of the
application in focus.

* Comment - This includes providing me with the running JAWS version
when the JAWS command search is in focus. This is how I was able to confirm
that the correct version of JAWS is running.

* Check to see if Alt+Control+J is set as the command for launching
JAWS.

* Most times it is not there and I have to re-set it.

* Leave JAWS focus on the JAWS icon on the desktop for "just in case".
* Insert+F4, Enter key to shut down JAWS.
* Control+Alt+J to re-launch JAWS, or press Enter key to launch JAWS
from the icon if it does not launch.
* Like magic, JAWS is in the system tray and all appears to be well.

* Comment - Significant improvements in how JAWS reads the spell check
screen. Sometimes there is still a lag in when it reads the next word or
the spell check statistics dialog box as well as JAWS sometimes only read
the OK button in this dialog box, Insert+B will read the contents.

* Going to the locked screen gives me mixed results with JAWS being
able to read the screen so that I can log back in. Same behavior if the
computer locks on its own.

*   Comment - Narrator works.

* I have unchecked the various settings for running JAWS at startup
and rechecked them and re-started JAWS.
*   I have run a JAWS repair.

So, my assumption is that something is blocking JAWS from completely
launching prior to the login screen. Does anyone have any ideas?

Annette

Subject: [JAWS-Users] Recurring problem: JAWS not speaking at logon screen
after Windows 10 updates

Hello Everyone,

I'm using Windows 10 with JAWS version 17.0.2729.

I'm seeking input regarding a recurring problem that I'm experiencing when
Windows 10 updates have taken place.

Whenever there has been a Windows 10 update, JAWS does not speak at the
logon screen. I cannot tell when the logon screen appears and when it is
ready to receive my Windows password. I cannot tell if anything is
happening if I do enter something and try to TAB to the OK button.

Needless to say, this makes logging on to my PC impossible at these times
without sighted assistance.

My husband who is sighted has helped me deal wit this. We have called the
Microsoft Accessible Help line. They said that somehow JAWS gets corrupted
when there are Windows 10 updates, and that we should uninstall and
reinstall JAWS making sure to set JAWS to speak at the logon screen.

Doing those things solves the problem until another Windows 10 update
occurs. There was a Windows 10 update recently. We will need to go through
the process of uninstalling and reinstalling JAWS for the thirdtime.

I'm wondering if others among you have experienced these difficulties. I'm
also wondering if there is a newer version of JAWS that does not have this
problem with Windows 10 updates. I've read of so many problems with JAWS
2018 that I'm hesitant to upgrade to it at this point.

I don't know how someone without sighted assistance would deal with the
frustrations that Ihave described. Repeatedly waiting around for sighted
help to fix a recurring problem such as this shouldn't be acceptable.

As a comment, I want to also say that I'm finding the discussion of screen
readers and web browsers interesting. I admit that having to become skilled
using different screen readers and web browsers, and to keep assessing which
screen reader/web browser combination works with various websites is very
discouraging. I use Internet Explorer. Even the NY Times is crashing more
now than it did previously. I usually get done what I need to but I admit
that I'm definitely less technically adept than many of you.

Thanks in advance for any advice you can offer.

Christine Murphy

F2 is how you edit a cell, then just use the end key. I'm not sure if
control end works in a cell, but you shoulnd't have that much text in any
cell.

2017-11-26 Thread amcarr1
Another work around is to tab to the cell to the right of the cell you want to
work in, and use your left arrow to move to the end of the previous cell. If
you are working with the cell at the end of the row, I'm not sure if tabbing to
the first cell on the next line and then using the left arrow will work. If
you were to move to the cell below the cell you want to work in, you could use
up arrow to move to the last line in the cell above it.

Hi Daniel,

As far as I know, there's no way of doing this, because pressing END jumps out
of the sell as you said, and the JAWS command CTRL+ALT+END jumps to the last
sell in the current table. As a workaround, you could work with the sells in
Excel, press F2 on the one you want to edit and CTRL+END to go to the end as in
any text box.
When you finish editing your sells, you can copy and paste the sheet as a table
in the Word document.

Hope it helps!

[JAWS-Users] JAWS2018 Not Playing Nice with Office Spell Check

2017-11-26 Thread amcarr1
Hello All,

I am using Windows10 Professional, OfficePro2016 and JAWS2018 Professional.
I am having significant trouble with getting JAWS to read the various
components of the spell check dialog in both Outlook and Word. Sometimes it
reads nothings, sometimes it reads as I am tabbing through the dialog box
and other times it does not. It rarely reads items in the same order when
it does talk while tabbing. Does anyone have any suggestions on how to
improve or better yet, correct this problem?

Thanks,

Annette

I've tried Right/Left arrows, Tab, Shift+Tab, Space, Enter, and Applications

I also tried typing mice... into the Start Menu search field, and managed to
get myself to the hardware tab in the Mouse Properties dialog box. There
are 2 items in this list that are exactly the same. I could not do a single

Michael,

There are some HP Touchpads that have the ability to be turned on and off by
tapping twice in one of the corners. I think it is the top left corner.
I've never been able to figure out which of their touchpads can do this, and
which cannot.

Hello Annette this has happened to me for 3 yeares now on my HP Laptop.
This is a touch pad driver issue.
I googled it and for me it was just a matter of reinstalling an older
driver.
But each time i do this and recieve windows updates it just updates again.
It drives me crazy.
So now i just type in the start menu and type mouse then it comes up with
changing mouse settings.
So i click that one and just go in to the touch pad software and disable it
each time i boot up.
I have tole thems about this in the windows feedback but no fix as yet.
Cheers Michael.

toggles the Formatting marks on and off. When I was in a MS-Word doc, I

Re: [JAWS-Users] remove formatting

2017-11-18 Thread amcarr1
I am also using JAWS2018 latest build. Here is what I find when I am in a
Word document and I use Insert to open the JAWS Quick Settings Menu

Down arrow and you will find an outline arrangement of the various settings.

Level 0 Word Settings
Level 1 Speech & Sounds.
Level 1 Formatting has 6 items at level 2
Level 1 Tables has 3 items at level 2
Level 1 Editing Options has 6 items at level 2, and New line and paragraph
indicator. is the 4th item

If you are hearing things like paragraph and space marker being announced,
it is an editing feature that you have to turn off. Trying doing the
following:

1. Open JAWS Quick Menu with Insert+v

2. Navigate down to Edit Options.

3. Navigate down to New line and paragraph indication.

4. Press space bar until you hear "Off".

5. Tab to OK and press space.

Let us know if this does the trick.

[JAWS-Users] Problem filling out Google Form

2017-11-11 Thread amcarr1
Hi,

I am pleased to report that there has been significant improvements made in
creating Google Forms when using JAWS. I cannot tell you exactly why that
is, since I have moved up to Windows10, JAWS2018 and the recommended version
of FireFox.

Of course with the good comes the bad. I've successfully created the form,
and sent the link to myself. The link takes me to the form and I can fill
in the edit boxes, but cannot select any of the radial buttons, checkboxes
or the submit button. Of course, if the required questions are not
completed, the submit button should not work. I've made sure the "accept
responses" checkbox is checked.

If anyone has any suggestions on how to get this to work, I would appreciate
it.

Thanks,

Annette

[JAWS-Users] Creating surveys in Survey Monkey

2017-11-11 Thread amcarr1
Hi Everyone,

Does anyone have experience with creating surveys in Survey Monkey? I've
completed surveys that have been created by someone else, and for the most
part they have been accessible. I've set up my free account and attempted
to create a survey from scratch. After that I do not see a change in the
screen, and cannot find any logical thing to activate to continue.

Any assistance will be appreciated.

Re: [JAWS-Users] locked screen;

2017-11-01 Thread amcarr1
David,

Interesting you bring this up today. Last night for the 5th time that I was
working with Dell Tech support since I got this new computer, I asked him to
explain what was going on when I was logging in as I was having problems.
He said that there is a splash screen that pops up. It seemed that if I
pressed a key, it would go away and then I could log in. The Tech then when
into some Windows setting and changed a setting or 2 so that the screen does
not pop up. When he rebooted, he said that something was still coming up,
but I seemed to get in easier. I have however, noticed a significant
improvement when logging back in after the computer goes to sleep.

Sorry that I cannot provide exact instructions, but maybe this will point
you in the right direction.

Re: [JAWS-Users] JAWS Weirdness

2017-10-30 Thread amcarr1
I am finding that there are some differnces in how my control keys work on
the various Dell laptops that I am currently using at home and work. Given
that 3 of them are new to me, I have not been able to sort it out. For
example, I do know that there is not an application key on any of them.
Yes, Shift+F10 still works, but now Fn+Right Control works as well. It does
not work on the old E6440, but it does work on the new E7440. I still need
to test it on the E6450.

Re: [JAWS-Users] JAWS is Sluggish

2017-10-29 Thread amcarr1
Thank you Mike!

That appears to have made a difference, but still not as responsive as I
would expect. For example, it takes a while before a press of the control
key stops JAWS from talking. When I made the change to the graphics
accelerator, I noticed that the checkbox below it is for something called
"animation when expanding conversations and groups". Do you have any idea
what this does, and if it really needs to be checked?

Hi Annette

Give the following a try to see if it'll help:

From: Jean Menzies via Jfw
Just thought I'd share this for those who want to try it.

The symptom. I've often found sluggish performance in Word when searching,
or when opening a second document. Jaws seems to either not be able to read
a screen without refreshing, or, in searching, it would sometimes take two
tries to get to the results. Just plain sluggish.

In going through settings, I came across an option to "Disable Hardware
Graphics Acceleration". I checked that and things seem to be much more
responsive now. I'll see how the day goes. But if anyone wants to do this,
go into Options, Advanced, and the item is in there. If you use the, Alt +
G keystroke, you'll get to it much quicker. From what I read on Google, if
you change it in one MS program, it should affect all of them. Hey, I don't
need graphics anyway. haha.
Hope this works.
Jean
Note From Mike B.: My settings wouldn't stick until I checked the, prompt to
update style, checkbox. To get to this checkbox the keystroke is, Alt + Y.
Take care. Mike. Go Dodgers!

Hi All,

Thank you Dennis for pointing me in the correct direction. The Dell Rep
change the sound card driver to Intel (or something like that). It was some
type of advanced driver called Real something. I apologize for not remember
the exact names of these. The Dell Rep made a note in my account so that if
for some reason in the future it gets changed back we will know where to
start.

As much as I dreaded laying out the money for the Dell Pro Support Plus, I
am glad I did. I've now received at least 5 hours of support.

server when I was using IMAP. Just seemed like extra time wasted to me.

Good advice, nothing to worry about unless it persists; from time to time,
for diverse reasons, Outlook is not able to connect to a mail servier when
trying to send and receive, something it normally does when opened and
periodically thereafter.

POP3 is Post Office Protocol, wherein you actually download your messages
from the server to your computer. IMAP is newer, in it you download only
the headers, your message remains at the server.

SMTP or Simple Mail Transfer Protocol is what sends your messages out to
your mail server, which in turn forwards to the next server in the chain and
so on to however many are necessary until it reaches the recipient's server,
where it awaits access by te recipient, either Online, with POP3 or with
IMAP.

Humberto

[JAWS-Users] New Computer Not Playing Well with JAWS18

2017-10-24 Thread amcarr1
Hi All,

I had to buy a new computer as my 6 plus year old Toshiba bit the dust.
JAWS18 latest build is installed on the new laptop which is a Dell 5480
running Windows10. The JAWS volume is jumping all over the place and what
JAWS is saying is being clipped off. Here is what I've attempted so far
without a fix.

Called FS who told me that I had to turn off the special sound effects.
Since she did not know how to do this, she recommended that I call Microsoft
Disability support.

All that the Microsoft support person wanted to do was turn off all sounds.

My husband and I have poked around in the various sound settings and cannot
find anything.

I called back to FS and they had me run a JAWS repair. There was no
improvement.

I called back to FS yet again, and was told that while she's heard of the
problem she has no idea on how to fix it. She did tell me that I need to
find sound enhancements for the sound card and figure out which ones to turn
off.

If anyone can direct me in the right direction, I would really appreciate
it.

Annette

Each has its uses, better to use POP3 when you normally check your email
from the same computer; better to use IMAP if you travel, or have a home
computer and an office computer, also check your mail on the phone, etc.

Hello Laura.

There are several types of e-mail servers out there, Microsoft Exchange
Server being one. Some just require you to set up a username and password;
others need you to manually set up port numbers, encryption type and so on.
All this stuff clearly has already been done on your system, so it doesn't
sound like there's anything to worry about so long as you are getting
messages on all your accounts. The pop3 (or is it smtp, I always forget)
servers will are designed so you can connect, grab your messages and then
disconnect. Usually on modern internet connections this all happens really
quickly, but it could take longer if you have a lot of messages or if they
contain large attachments. I don't know the specific messages that appear on
the screen for each connection type, but it just sounds like JAWS is reading
these. If you get an error message on any of your accounts that is
consistently happening over a period of a couple of days, contact your
e-mail provider.

Hi Cesar,

I have now updated to the latest release of JAWS with no improvement.

How long have you had your Toshiba M645-4070? Did you find the touch sensitive
media keys above the keyboard to be a problem? I did, and was able to work
with Toshiba Technical support to turn them off. Now I am trying to learn the
Function key commands to do those same tasks.

Do you use JAWS with the Laptop Keyboard setting or the Desktop setting? I've
always used Desktop on every other laptop I've owned, but finding it impossible
so far on this one. The embedded numpad does not allow for the arrow keys and
the other keys so that I can execute the various JAWS reading commands. Any
suggestions?

Thanks,
Annette

Check your Jaws 11 version and if it is not the latest version update it to

 Hello,

I just got a new Toshiba M645-S4070 laptop running Windows 7 Home with
JAWS 11 installed. Most likely this is not the most recent version of
JAWS 11. When I am typing or navigating with the arrow keys or the tab
key, the JAWS volume fades out. Does anyone have any ideas why this is
happenning, and how to fix it?

 Thanks,

From the little I've done thus far with an audio file on this new computer,
the problem appears to be limited to JAWS. There was a problem noted in the
FS Knowledge-base that referenced a problem back in 2003 with JAWS 4.5 and a
particular stereo feature on a sound card used by Toshiba at that time. I'm
now going to compare those notes with info in the sound settings on this
computer.

Thanks,
Annette
