Re: [lace-chat] domain name change

2022-12-06 Thread Angel
Well, I still enjoy what chat is still on it! I have been a member since
it’s inception! I would be sorry to see it disappear! Well, especially lace!
The whole idea of the chat is to keep off topic chatter off the lace list!
Well, if occasional chatter would be ok on lace, then and only then would I ok
closing lace chat down…just my 5 cents worth

Re: [lace] Bolster pillow Bobbin management

2022-10-09 Thread Angel
I use ribbon (cloth) and long divider pins and long pins with good sized Pearl
tips. I once had a bolster pillow knocked of the refrigerator by my cat! The
lace wasn’t salvageable! Now it is so well locked down when I put it away
you can turn it upside down and shake it without anything moving! You learn to
secure EVERYTHING!

Re: [lace] Hanging Bobbins

Do you mean matching pairs?? I have never heard the term except in the actual
process of making lace you have to “hang” a pair. I do have a matching set or
two which are always hung together. One was a gift from a very talented bobbin
maker/painter in England. Deeply treasured.
Just would like clarification.

Re: [lace] Hand carved bobbins

2020-10-25 Thread Angel
Well, very clever of you Malvary! I fortunately found a Swedish Store called
Engelbritson’s that stocked lace books and lace making supplies (including
bobbins) They had a lot of birch starter bobbins for English lace. A tad
bulkier than the good ones but cheap! Rarely use them but have them for large
projects! I don’t know what I would have done without them! They were burned
out during the riots this summer. Broke my heart since the US is not full of
lace suppliers like England!

[lace] Miss Channer’s Lace Mat

2020-04-15 Thread Angel
Hello fellow lacers,

I have a couple of questions, probably only to those who have tackled the
challenge of Miss Channer’s Mat. As I have rediscovered my pricking, which I
honestly thought was permanently lost or destroyed since it went missing for
years, (and found on our 25th anniversary!) I need some advice.

1. How many pairs of bobbins are required?

2. What thread did you folks use?? David, I know you went with black, but was
it silk?

3. How many gimp bobbins are needed?

4. Any other advice you folks can give me would be most appreciated.

I would again like to thank Jacqui Southard for making it possible for me to
acquire this stunning pricking !!! I am totally hooked on Bucks point lace!
Without the wonderful English authors of Bucks point instruction manuals and
prickings, I would never have discovered the joy and beauty of this lace.

Self taught in rural America!

Re: [lace] Happy 25th Anniversary

2020-04-12 Thread Angel
OMG!!! I just found 2 things that I “physically” acquired through this list!
They have been “lost” since 2003! I found them on our 25th anniversary!

1. The pricking of Miss Channer’s Mat that I won in a raffle Jacqui held
through Arachne! I never ever win raffles and won that one!!! I Sooo want to
tackle it but still need more bobbins!

2. The Lace Dealer’s Pattern Book from the Luton Museum! Everyone in Arachne
worked so hard to preserve the samples from Thomas Lester’s Lace Pattern Book,
and to get the facsimile book produced so we could turn to it without having to
go to the Luton Museum! Seemed like it took forever then suddenly it was
offered to us. They mention Arachne in the book and mention how we brought
worldwide interest to the conservation work.

As a group we should recognise how deeply we have impacted the world of lace.
It has been a very good and productive 25 years.

Re: [lace] How much did lace makers pay for high end bobbins.Reply

2019-10-09 Thread Angel
Wow, Walrus Ivory?? Is it the same as Elephant Ivory? Same quality?
Suddenly I am thinking about Narwhal Ivory! I am fascinated by Narwhals since
they are the only “natural” unicorns on the planet! Makes them ultra
special!
By the way, I am thrilled that Diana has real ivory bobbins! Personally, I
wouldn’t know a real Ivory bobbin if it leaped up off a lace pillow and
smacked me in the face. Obviously they were an upper market item destined for
lace pillows that were owned by middle to upper class lacemakers. Lower market
lacemakers, who were making lace for income, would, most likely, have had bone
and wooden bobbins. I am sure their bone bobbins were treasured even back
then.

Re: [lace] How much did lace makers pay for high end bobbins. Reply

2019-10-09 Thread Angel
Dear Malvery
Ha, Ha,
Well, being the actual person behind the quote, I was responding to Brian’s
question in a previous post, concerning how low paid workers got their hands on
high end bobbins.
I agree with you that the usual material was bone. Ivory however was available
via Kenya, South Africa, and other African areas the British Empire went (oh
dear, we can’t forget India!) Anyway, we can’t discount the probability that
ivory bobbins did and may still exist.
The main gist of the conversation was that there very likely was a class of
bobbin buyers who were landed gentry, had more coin to spend on upper end
bobbins and basically made lace as a leisure not as income.

I join you in being very very sorry that Jacqui has passed. Cancer is never
easy to deal with (it took my mother from me) I didn’t know her personally but
have been avidly reading and sometimes answering her posts since Arachne was
new! We will all miss her terribly! Please pass on to her family the
condolences of all the lacemakers on the list who appreciated her expertise.

Very sad

David and fellow Arachnids!

Yeah! 25 Years is a very long time! I joined a couple of months after it
started, but it was the same year! Never ever wanted to leave, though I have
had periods where I have lurked in the background due to a myriad of reasons!
However, I do avidly read posts and even save useful ones! We have had many
members pass on, which is sad, but we still have lacemakers, bobbin makers,
bobbin historians, pillow makers, lace historians...etc! This is still the BEST
place to learn about all things lace! Through thick and thin, we have been a
solid lace community!

Grateful to be a member!

Sue,
Maybe you need to treat her to a gift of beginning Beds lessons. Failing that,
get her a book that she can self learn from... graded patterns from super easy
that teach something new with each progressive pattern. That is how I self
taught myself Buckspoint and I refused to do Torchon as well. I think I would
have quit if I had been forced to start with Torchon. I am sure it has it’s
fans and I don’t mean to belittle anyone! I simply have to do what tweaks my
pleasure centres! Bucks point was it for me! Love at first sight!
Don’t give up on your friend and feel free to share this with her! I am sure
you know enough about lace to get her started, or to answer any questions she
may have!

Re: [lace] Bucks ornament & questions about false picots & Wiltshire area bobbins

2019-03-26 Thread Angel
Sue,
I feel the same about Bucks bobbins. I would gladly replace my bobbins with
nothing but Bucks bobbins. It is not that people don’t find them a good weight
or uncomfortable in the hands. Problem is very few people bother to turn the
bobbins you and I like! There is little demand, caused by “ignorance”, and
bobbin makers prefer to make what is in demand. Of course, not making the more
“obscure” or should I say “specialised” Bobbins, only helps keeps the majority
of lace makers ignorant of what is available. (Or should be available) I spend
a lot of energy searching for Bucks Bobbins but can only find 1 Bobbin maker
who makes them, and he lately “isn’t” making them available for sale. Antiques
are expensive if they are in decent shape, and lately they are also hard to
find! It is no wonder that I settle for “midlands” bobbins to fill the majority
of my collection. Basically, Midlands and Continental bobbins are all that’s
available!
Lace bobbin makers, pay attention here! I can’t be the only lace maker going
crazy wanting Bucks bobbins, and Sue can’t be the only lacemaker delighting in
the Downton and Trolley bobbins! We need more
of these English bobbins coming off your laths! Making them available would
probably increase interest and thus increase demand!
Just my opinion!

Re: [lace] Happy Anniversary

Well, I have been with Arachne since the 1st year! Not sure which month because
it was a painful year (fell off a ladder 25 feet to a cement floor in Dec 1995)
I discovered bobbin lacemaking as an activity early in 1996 and was searching
for a resource. Ran into Arachne, probably pretty close after its inception! So
many people back then that are still loyal Arachne members! Yes, a glorious
Anniversary! I am still loyal as all get out though not as active as then!
Still reading posts and occasionally piping up!
Thanks for the anniversary heads up David!

I find this interesting, I only work on bolsters and never had lessons. (self

RE: [lace] Care of fabrics - silk

2014-04-11 Thread Angel Skubic
Actually oil removes oil. And grease is oil based. I removed melted crayon
from silk by using peanut butter (also oily) which is an old remedy my gran
used. Orange oil is excellent for any greasy job which is why you see so
much of that on the market now. (Lemon oil as well) so Yes, Lavender oil and
eucalyptus oil work as well. I would say use what ever oily product you have
on hand, and/or use what you think might leave a more pleasant scent (good
reason to go for the floral or citrus scented oils.) actually now that I
know the OIL was the part of the peanut butter that took out the crayon, I
don't use peanut butter due to its thickness and stickiness but it works
quickly!!! No couple of days...it was out in minutes. I do use a lot of
vegetable oil because it is on hand, and works just as well.

Good luck!!! I got lucky and won a lottery that had that as a prize (think

it has been out of print since forever. But then, I did get lucky and maybe

What I found disconcerting with the demo was the lack of how to support.
Unless you already have been using their software, there is no way to really
figure out how to do things. For instance, how to change the curve of a fan?
How to undo, etc. I have the demo but besides putting dots, I am really
sort of lost and unable to do anything with it...which has not increased my
desire to invest in the whole package very much.

RE: [lace] Demonstrating

2013-12-09 Thread Angel Skubic
I am self taught and I started with Bucks-point since I learned a long time
ago that if I am not thrilled with the beauty of what I am making I will
never complete it. Thusly I do better by jumping into the deep end of the
pool (which by the way is how I learned how to swim as well) I have to know
that when I am done people are going to go o.Awww. and
tell me they would never have the patience for that. I want what I do to be
beautiful and something people as well as me will want to mount and put up
for everyone to see. I cross-stitch, knit, crochet, work chainmail, and do
lace that way...Remarkably the method works great for me because I am never
disappointed even if my first attempts have errors. I just keep trying and
perfecting until it is how I wish it to look. I am pleased with my efforts,
I am eager to start more...I generally end up gifting almost all of my
stuff. I have learned I have to be occasionally firm and insist on something
being just mine, or I never have anything and everyone else has my work on
their walls LOL. My mother, bless her soul, did make sure that when she
passed all the works she received from me came back to me. So I am in
agreement that there really is no real line that cannot be crossed if you're
willing to accept the challenge and take the time to make sure you're
learning the basics as you go. The most important thing to remember is you
have to do something you seriously want to do, and that you're enjoying
yourself. I am a strong believer in not letting other's set limits for you.
I do have to admit however that I am very independent and not all people
have my desire to jump in head first into deep water (yes I dived before I
swam) but my brain is wired that way. Everyone has their own idea of where
they wish to start and should be allowed to start there...either at the very
beginning with braids or at the deep end. I do have to admit, that I made 2
braids, it took one afternoon and I KNEW right then that I would never make
lace if I continued in that manner.

From the comment below I would expect the VARK to show that preferred
sensory learning style (how you would prefer to experience learning) as
kinaesetic - to learn through all the senses, feel, see, hear and taste and

RE: [lace] WANTED knitted lace pattern

2013-10-31 Thread Angel Skubic
Jenny stick those cold feet into a hot tub of water and get started. If you
like Estonian and you can do the nupps, then do the Estonian shawl...they
are marvellous. I can give you a tip...when making your yarnovers for the
nupps stretch your left needle out and make sure you have lots of room and I
use the click shut plastic yarn markers that look like big safety pins. I
put it through all the yarnovers after they are made so when I come back on
the purl row I don't miss one and have the nupp unravel on me (a tip I
picked up watching an Estonian lacemaker make nupps on u-tube) The larger
you make the yarnovers the easier it will be to purl them all together and
you will have pretty nupps. Also every 10 rows or so, use buttonhole thread
of a contrasting color and a size 24 tapestry needle and run a lifeline
through every stitch on that row. DO use lots of yarn markers to mark off
all repeats and be careful NOT to put your lifeline through any yarn
markers. I do some very difficult patterns that have pattern on every single
row and the lifelines are essential!!! They will save you a lot of
exasperation when you make a mistake and have to back up...nothing will go
past that lifeline. Also since your silk is so wonderfully fine, you will
want to make sure you use very small needles. I have two gossamer shawls on
needles but you can use 00 if the needles frighten you. Make sure
you have excellent lighting and as little distraction as possible so you can
focus. It is NOT hard but distractions can lead to mistakes. I copy my
patterns and put them in plastic folders so I can tape colored moveable tape
on whatever line I am currently on. It helps prevent you from dropping your
eye off the correct row.

What pattern to pick ? Since you bought such sensational yarn, Pick the
pattern that speaks to you, not to anyone else...the one YOU like best. You
would be surprised, but some of the prettiest shawls in that book are the
easiest. Oh if you have the dvd in the back of the book watch it...she is
full of tips. (also if that yarn is really to skinny you can double it
considering how much you have...just take the yarn from both ends and start
knitting from there. NONE of those patterns use 5,000 yards (I am working on
a pattern that uses 6,000 yards so they do exist, but not in Nancy's book)

RE: [lace] Re: [lace] books vs kindle

2013-05-25 Thread Angel Skubic
I have the nook reader and use both the nook and kindle app on my iPhone. I
love reading on my phone because I can read in the dark but love the nook
book (black and white flat no glare) during the day. Yes I have the Nook
clip on lights for reading in the dark but they do glare and the batteries
are not friendly to people like me who can spend hours reading in the dark.
I tend to run the light batteries down. My son has been using my nook's
charger for his HTC Evo phone because the charger cords are identical and he
lost his HTC Evo charger. I told him he could use it if he was sure to plug
in the nook when he wasn't using it but he finds it inconvenient to run back
and forth into my room to get the cord (sigh) Wonder what he would think if
I just took it back??
Wishing I had the iPad because I could keep my piecework magazines on it. I
do keep my Queen Susan Shetland lace shawl pattern (knitted lace) on the
iPhone but it is so small it is of very little use really (and the Queen
Susan Shetland Shawl has just a zillion charts) The pattern book itself is
pdf and 76 pages. (yes, that is for only 1 shawl) It is nice, though, if I
have a question about something and want to read a section of the pattern
book. (usually I take a printed chart in a plastic sleeve to use when I knit
on the go) One chart, however, doesn't give you the research notes of the
people who spent ages literally creating the charts for this lost shawl
that was preserved in only 1 picture in a lace museum. Having the pdf on my
phone is handy when you get into something that you question and want to see
what they recommended or did themselves.

As we have 2 years or so to go until the 20th anniversry, we have plenty of

As mentioned, a commemorative bobbin is pne option. We could e.g. ask
Stuart

probably many more.

Stuart and Mike are 2 of my favourite bobbin turners, but I think
Mike's not making them any more.

The other is to make a lace panel, with each member doing a part of it

Nice idea, but who'd get the panel?? 'cos I know we'd all want it :)

Hold on, how about the first part?

Lacis with a or Lacis with e like in lace.

I guess it depends whether one is in the UK or the US? Is there one correct

Last night I finished a Torchon shawl for my daughter for Christmas. When I
started it 2 moths ago, I was not sure whether it would be for Christmas
2011 or 2012, but I did it, and am quite pleased with the result.
The material was a mixture of alpaca wool, silk and rayon in lace weight.
Not the easiest to work with at it is very slippy and I used standard
English bobbins with spangles.

Well, I did my job training completely on the computer and on the phone
(they used a windows conference program and the phone call was voip but you
could use any phone (in fact I used my cell phone for most of it) do they do
conference skype? We were told when our classes were and we simply showed
up. Yeah they would probably have to be outside of normal working hours
and then again maybe there is a happy medium that can be found by asking the
group what they would like schedule wise. I work abby-normal hours (sorry
couldn't resist the Young Frankenstein quip.) such as evening (5 to 10
eastern time) The video's we watched on our own time and then we would
discuss the course with the teacher and the teacher used the windows
conference program to put up job aids etc...) It is very different and not
as good as one on one or even group live classes but it does have its up
sides too (like taking care of the distance issues) I am totally book
trained (self taught) due to no way could I ever get to lace classes. I am
hoping MAYBE when the lace conference comes to St Paul MN I may be able to
actually get in on a live class for the first time.

Sherry is not the only person who finds that travel to classes is a
problem.

There was some discussion at Ithaca about the fact that a major impediment
to learning lace is that here in the US, at least, we are very spread out
and it is costly in time and money to travel to lace classes. One person
who would prefer not to be traveling was bouncing around some ideas about
how
one could organize lace instruction via skype or video conferencing. This
was such a new idea to me, at least, that I was wondering what format it
could be done in. Would it, for instance be necessary for a group of people

who are in a class of the future to be available in front of their screens
at the same time? I have taken on line courses, but not ones that involved
viewing video instruction. Each student was able to receive the lesson and
do the work on their own time schedule which was an advantage. Then you
would submit your work to the professor for feedback. The class I took was
one
that I paid for, and I would assume that an internet lace class with an
attentive teacher would also include a payment platform.

Much as we are now downloading books onto digital devices which in some
cases eliminates certain costs related to the physical production and
handling of materials, will the future include being able to stream lace
instruction off the internet either in the form of an instructional video or
in the
form of an interactive class?

Does anyone have any idea how lace classes of the future might be
organized with the use of the internet eliminating the physical limitation
of
distance?

RE: [lace] Wild silk - Tussah

2009-05-18 Thread Angel Skubic
Yeah, and it is to be treated like any other silk...it is definitely silk
but does tend to have a golden tone to the color. I think the silk worm moth
has exited the cocoon before the silk is harvested in most instances (unless
they have been raised by someone) I am going to attempt to spin Tussah
silk...wish me luck.(no it won't be lace weight...haa haa I wish I could
spin that well yet) it is often blended with other fibers to make them
softer. It is a very strong fiber just like cultivated silk.

I wondered about the term Tussah, which I have seen before but didn't know
what it meant. I found a webpage with this comment.
Wild silk is a coarser fiber than cultivated silk. Traditionally silk
carpets are made of this. Because it grows free, without cultivation, and
the silkworms diet is any leaf available, the natural color varies in shade
from off-white to almost yellow.

Does anyone have experience with Tussah silk?

Kalahari Tussah is a development project in Namibia, Southern Africa,
focusing on utilizing the cocoons of an indigenous African silk moth,
Gonometa postica.

This initiative was born from the realization that a realistic solution had
to be found to resolve the problem; that communities in the Kalahari are
destitute with few opportunities for poverty alleviation; and that the silk
cocoons represented a valued luxury natural fibre resource.

RE: [lace] YLI Colours

2009-03-21 Thread Angel Skubic
Well, from one US person to a UK person I think the founding father's here
changed spelling (or should we blame the guy who made the first US
dictionary?) I think they changed the spellings out of spite and or out of
attempting to make it more phonetic...Webster...that is the guy I am
thinking of. It is ALL his fault...No one else tampered with the spelling of
English. In fact every country in the world speaks and spells the queen's
English and the Oxford Dictionary is what they consider the final say in
how to spell things. Only in America do we swear by Webster's version. I
know...I descended by Canadians and have gotten grief all my life for
spelling things the way my grandparents showed me grey not gray etc.
I still use catalogue not catalog. I also use centre and theatre not center
and theater. My English teachers never could straighten me out.
I searched through my threads and can't find YLI but...I would think if it
was labeled in Japan or in England you would get colours not colors.

I'll be curious to hear what others do in addition to their lacemaking!

I had a considerable stash of weaving and spinning supplies before bobbin
lace engulfed my time. I still do a bit of both, couldn't part with all the
spinning wheels, so kept one (of 6) and one loom (of 6), one large box of
weaving yarns (of X number...my what a lot of space left for bobbin lace
stuff!), and exotic fibre to spin on a rainy day. I did keep the drop
spindles which don't take up much space. However, as soothing as
handspinning can be, it doesn't have the puzzle-solving appeal of making
lace. And weaving was just too hard on my shoulders. I have made handspun
just for lace, but the commercial threads do a much better job LOL and I'd
rather knit with my handspun. So my secondary past-time is knitting. While I
appreciate embroidery and other stitchery, needlework isn't for me to do,
unless I'm attaching lace to a piece of fabric with a simple running stitch

No, Jen in Melbourne, I was not referring to a 750ml bottle but to a 250
ml
(or 2 glass bottle) similar to those served on planes and designed for
consumption by one (or individual) person. These are readily available
in
supermarkets in the UK with a small selection of white, red or sparkling
wines and are
ideal for the person celebrating Christmas alone; enough to be festive
but a
long way short of being thoroughly intoxicated.

I don't wish to have anyone., wherever in the world, to think I would
drink a
large bottle of wine alone.

Oh I am S excited myself...I am going to do the leaf and I went to
that site for that Dillmont book and found whole lots of other books and
leaflets etc to help me learn stitches etc. I am going to try to make a
sampler out of the Plate VIII in Dilmont's Needle Point Lace book. That
way I can try all the different stitches. I also want to try to do it
with the stitches currently in place. I think I am going to really like
this. Something that I can actually carry with me to work on. The
Dillmont book was a great pattern book but there are a couple of others
that are more how too books. Anyway...busy busy busy trying to learn.
Love that I already have most of the stuff I need being I do bobbin
lace, tat, crochet etc...Going to use color in this so I can see what I
am doing from row to row...

Wish me luck...thanks for the inspiration...

RE: [lace] RioGrande

2007-11-06 Thread Angel Skubic
Dear Spiders,
Sorry I replied to Betty but forgot to reply to the list. You have to
become a customer of Rio Grande before you can register online. I
suggest that you call their phone # 1.800.545.6566 and then ask to
register as a customer. If they ask, tell them you do beadwork and
beaded jewelry. (lots of people do) if they ask if you have a company
name...tell them not yet (unless you do then give it)... They will get
your address, phone # and all other pertinent info then give you a
customer #...send you the hard copy catalogues (3 of them) if you desire
and give you a temporary user name and password for the website if you
want to get on that. NO unfortunately if your just a casual browser, you
can not go to the website and use it. They cater online only to their
current customers. (as a convenience more than anything else) As I told
Betty...if you bead or do craft work with beads or metal at all, you
will LOVE their stuff. High quality and they are very very nice folk to
deal with.

Hi, all

I've got a little pile of red rubber bands suitable for the Beswick
bobbin
winder, courtesy of the Royal Mail, in front of me. I just counted them
up
and there are 36 of them. I'll post half a dozen each to Barbara,
Delores,
Jane and Angel as soon as things quieten down enough at work to get to
the
Post Office in my lunch hour. That should be enough to last them until
this
batch perish, and leaves a dozen here if anyone else needs a couple..

Reading the recent posts about buying books while one has chance
reminded me
that I have a copy of Bridget Cook's Russian Lacemaking which I bought
years
ago and have never used. I don't think I ever will use it - I no longer
like
the pattern I bought it for, and nothing else in it is really my cup of
tea -
so as I believe it's now out of print I'll offer it as a raffle prize so
it
can find a home where it will be better appreciated. (My lace bookshelf
is in
danger of collapsing under the weight of all the projects I do want to
do
someday...)
I'll post it anywhere in the world, the only qualification for entry is
that
you have to intend to have a go at Russian tape lace. (The technical
instructions are fairly clear, and being a tape lace it doesn't use a
lot of
pairs, so it wouldn't be too daunting for a near beginner to have a try
at)

Closing date for entries midnight (BST) Sunday 2nd September.

At the moment I'm really pleased with myself as I managed to pick up a

condition for £2.50 in a second hand book shop whilst on holiday in
Norfolk.

My only problem now is how am I ever going to find time to try Bucks

else! I didn't mean to buy any more books, but when I saw that, what
else could I do?

Every spring when the rhubarb is plentiful I have to make this easy
cake:

1 1/2 cups brown sugar
1/2 cup butter or margerine
1 egg
1 cup buttermilk or sour milk
2 cups flour
1 teaspoon soda
1 teaspoon vanilla
1/2 teaspoon salt
1 3/4 cups raw rhubarb diced small

Mix ingredients together in the order given, and pour batter into 9 x
12 greased pan.

Topping:

1/3 cup white sugar
1 tsp cinnamon
1 cup coconut
2 tablespoons butter melted
nuts optional

Combine ingredients and sprinkle over batter. Bake at 325 F for 40
minutes

Even without the topping, it's wonderful. I put the nuts in the batter.
And it keeps well, too!

RE: [lace] Pattern copyright

2007-04-18 Thread Angel Skubic
Well, I can tell you right now from just perusing the books I have, that
nothing says the books can not be resold. What the craft books say is
that you can't reproduce the contents or store the contents or send
the contents of the book by any means electronic, mechanical or
manually with out the permission of the copyright holder. Ie...you can't
quote the book word for word or take the patterns for your own profit.
They don't generally worry about private people copying things for their
own personal use, and would never bother to go after you for that. I
know they wouldn't care if you sold the books to students to have them
use it as a text for craft classes but they would object if you copied
the book on a printer and used or sold the copies as required materials
in a class. I have seen classes where instructions were copied and I
suspect they didn't write for permission...I think that is a widespread
issue these days but it is hard to catch unless it is done on a large
scale.

Most books carry a notice on the copyright page saying that the book

worth
the author or publisher taking legal action to stop a secondhand copy
being
 sold

Wow, that's hard to believe. If this is so, then all second-hand book
stores are illegal. While it wouldn't be financially feasible for one
author to go after one seller of one copy of his/her book, a class
action suit by all authors against all used-book stores would surely be
worth pursuing!

Remove the ruddy and put in bloody. 'Bloody son of a bitch'. I used to
use the word 'bloody' a lot as a child. My great grandfather used it a
lot and I picked it up from him. I was told it was NOT a nice word and
was not allowed to say it in the context I was using it. (Bloody dog,
bloody cat, bloody whatever) It is a British swear word. (my
greatgrandfather was half Irish and half English) the other word I was
not allowed to use was 'bugger'. (I also got that one from my great
grandfather) Never hear that from anyone until I started watching
British shows. I am amazed how much both the terms 'bloody' and 'bugger'
were used in the Harry Potter movies (by Harry's best friend Ron
especially.) I am now fairly certain I know what they mean. Most
Americans watching the show don't have a clue that Ron swears up a storm
for a young boy.

other

there are goods on the floor which need picking up. Hearing several tins

Hi Dora, Hey I am with you. I have a wrist and hand brace but does
nothing to protect my thumb. I just put up with the paina and go right
ahead and do what I do. (not fixable and I am NOT going to stop using my
hands.) Also as for being good enough to give good range of motion to
your fingers and thumb? Haa haa...I use it and get so frustrated I end
up taking it off. It is VERY clumsy. I can type with it but again not
really graceful. I think if I were to keep it on more I may eventually
get better at it but my patience is thin. I just go on crocheting,
lacing, knitting, putering, etc. My problem is nerve damage in my hand
and arm. (and tendon damage in the wrist area on top of it all)

Good luck and hopefully we will BOTH get some good suggestions.

I know there are people on this list who like to keep on using their
hands,
and I bet some of them have joint and tendon problems in their hands.

I need a good thumb and wrist brace, for wrist and thumb tendonitis,
thumb
arthritis, and snapping thumb. Supporting and keeping from extremes of
range of motion the wrist and base of thumb would be good enough.
Brace
must allow just enough range of motion in the thumb joints to type and
mouse, but not let the distal joint - the thumb joint fartherst from
the
hand - snap. Many spica braces don't really protect that joint. I
have
to be able to use thumb and fingers to scoop out bird seed - all of
that.
Ability to ride a bike too would be just
boss - but I ahve an idea that is asking too much. Brace also has to
be
not too bulky to type with it.

Hi Janice

Grate or peel any bar soap in a large bowl with potato peeler into 2
cups boiling water, (about a half cup of peelings). Add about a quarter
cup of liquid laundry starch, whip on high with electric mixer. Add
more soap peelings if not stiff enough. And create! It dries hard and
looks like fresh fallen snow on my Christmas tree and the whole house
smells divine.

I cadged this from a craft site - personally I'd use unscented soap, I
don't think the bar-soap smell goes well with food :(

I was so moved by it just about everyone on my contact list got it. I
liked the news video about it as well. I hope the best for the band,
Juan Mann and all the people who have picked up Free Hugs signs and gone
downtown to their city to spread the love.

Hello Pene,
Thanks for the link to this video. There was an article about this in
today's Times newspaper too; how the video brought fame to the hugger as

well as the group playing the music.
A nice story on a dark autumn day!

RE: [lace-chat] A Difficult Day

2006-09-27 Thread Angel Skubic
Dear David,

My best wishes go to you and to Barbara Doll. I have cats and can
sympathise with what your going through. They are very very precious to
me. (my children) I am glad that she will go on to catch more mice and
birds...Amazingly animals seem to get on quite well after an amputation.
I am glad she survived her encounter with your Tobacco man's vehicle. I
lost a kitty to our coalman as a child, in exactly the same way. She was
not so lucky...she died in my arms.

Subject: [lace-chat] A Difficult Day

Dear Friends,
Today started out bright and breezy as I was expecting 2 friends of
50 years up from Melbourne for the day.

However, at about midday, just prior to their arrival my tobacco man
accidently ran over my dear cat Barbara Doll. At least he stopped and
came back in to tell me. She had shot off under the house which is
about 12 high at the front and there was I all clean and showered
worming my way through 125 years of dust, broken bricks etc. to try
to get to her.

As I got near, she walked out the other side. I could see that her
right back leg was shattered, but I could not get near her. It was
pathetic watching her trying to climb a tree.

Eventually my friends arrived and we caught her and got her to the
Vet. After many x-rays and examinations it seems she was extremely
lucky - the hip is OK. It's mainly around the ankle area which is all
dislocated and smashed. The orthopod is to check the x-rays in the
morning, but it looks as though we are facing amputation tomorrow
afternoon.

I offered to invent a prosthesis, but there are too many problems
with fur etc. They said she'll cope really well and it's far easier
for a cat to lose a back leg than a front one which they use so much
for grooming, digging holes etc.

Hi All,

I have a copy of Singer Instructions for Art Embroidery and Lace Work
and
it is the Eighth Edition. It lists 1922, 1923, 1925, 1931, 1937, 1941,
and
1948 as the years of the other editions.

Subjects include Eyelet Embroidery, Richelieu Embroidery, Fancy Stitches
on
White Goods, Applique on Net, English Lace (Braid Applique), Brussels
Lace,
Teneriffe Wheels, Duchess Lace, Venetian Lace.

The Chapters are arranged into 5 Courses of Study. I have a treadle
machine, which I inherited from my husband's late aunt and if I ever
have
spare time I will try some of the Lace and Embroidery it demonstrates.
I
will certainly make time to read some more of it.

I am interested in the history of the things I do and it was for that
that I
purchased this book when I had the opportunity. It is just amazing what
you
can do with just a treadle machine. I am sure that no one fully uses
the
capacity of the machinery they own, I certainly don't.

What's early? And, does anyone know how well those early
combination machines sold? As opposed to the two -- independent
(sewing and embroidery) -- ones?

I think the book referred to was put out by the Singer sewing company.
And,
yes, it does refer to the use of a simple Singer straight-stitch sewing

machine to do embroidery, not a specialized embroidery machine.

Our local library has a copy of the book - I think it's called Singer
Instructions For Art Embroidery and Lace Work - and it has been
reprinted
(Dover?). I don't know how early the original book came out, but the
one
I've seen was from the 1920's.

So, how was the embroidery done? As I recall, you position your needle,

put
down the presser foot, and put the needle down through the fabric.

Then you either
(1) leave the needle in the fabric, lift the presser foot, turn the
work
around the other way, adjust the stitch length if you don't want a
straight
line of satin stitches but want them to widen or narrow, and take the
next
stitch back, or
(2) raise the presser foot, move the fabric to where you want the next
stitch to go in, put the presser foot down again, and put the needle
down
into the fabric and bring it back up.

When you've repeated that several thousand times, maintaining even
tension
all the way, you've got yourself a nice piece of embroidery.

The picture on the cover showed complicated curving whitework
embroidery
done in lovely even satin stitch. I can't imagine anyone not employed
by
Singer ever successfully accomplishing that level of work - or spending
the
time to do it - but I think a lot of women bought the book thinking it
was
all going to be very easy. (The Lace Work part of the title referred
to
the fact that after you'd done all your satin stitch you could cut out
part
of the background fabric to make cutwork 'lace'.)

It reminds me of a fad that flowered for six months or so about 25
years
ago - some sewing machine company hired people to tour around textile
shows
demonstrating how you could do cross stitch with the zig-zag feature on

their sewing machine. You bought very small diameter double-pointed
knitting needles. You laid them down on the fabric and zig-zagged over
them
with your machine, one stitch for each stitch on your pattern, then you

turned the whole thing around and zig-zagged back again to create the
other
side of the cross stitch. Then you changed your thread to the next
colour
and did the whole thing again in the next colour area, and so on.

The whole point was that you could do even cross stitch on
non-evenweave
fabrics. As far as I can tell, the demonstrators were the only people
who
were ever able to do the technique without breaking their sewing
machine
needle on the steel double-pointed needles. I knew people who bought
the
dpns but nobody who tried it more than once. It was tedious and
frustrating.

RE: [lace] i'm doing BOBBIN LACE !!! grumble mumble

2006-05-29 Thread Angel Skubic
Well, I just ran into that problem in a crochet magazine which was
showing the history of crocheted lace and at the top it said all the
methods shown below have one thing in common...they use fine thread and
a hook to make their designs. (yes that included the bobbin lace they
showed, and the needle lace) VERY misleading.

  Evidently a universal problem:

yes, except in France it's embroidery

In Spain it is crochet - the mothers, grandmothers
aunts etc. always did the same thing I do at demos -
but one person told me that they were better at it -
only needed one of those things (crochet hook) instead
of as many as I had on my pillow. Ah well - -

Ahh...sorry to hear that. Yeah they are using a marketing ploy but there
has to be a prize bigger than that out there for some lucky person. Have
they been calling? I prefer Duracell to all other batteries, but never
enter contests anyway. (now the lottery...that I am a sucker for)

If anyone in the UK buys Duracell batteries, you'll find numbers inside
the
packs for their World Cup competition. Throw them away. You have to
enter
your name, address, email address, date of birth and a phone number plus
the
number inside you pack to see if you'e won a prize. You have. You've won
a
free screensaver to download! What a good way to collect details for
direct
marketing as junk mail and phone calls are called to make them sound
acceptable.

I tried with 3 numbers and entered fictitious details. All won a freen

screensaver.
