Ok, so why is it then that Legacy can and will return results for locations
that are not standardised (no commas, not located on the maps feature,
nothing) and yet do contain the word I am looking for, and that word is not
the first word in the non-standard place name?
If Legacy can do that for pl

Any database, or any search tool that might be invented for use with a database

consistent manner.
“Brechinn angus” will be understood by a database as one specific entry.

Your example helps to see your problem.
Just curious, how many locations do you have in total?

I do understand that Bruce, but when I first started I would simply put in

Angus
Brechin angus (complete with no capital and no comma)
Angus Scotland (again, complete with no comma)

Kathy,
When they say to "standardize" your location, it doesn't mean they have to
have a specific number of positions, just that they need to be entered in a
consistent manner; i.e. either from smallest to largest or from largest to
smallest, regardless of the number of positions. So,

Michele - to get my locations consistent, I need to be able to find the

I am not good with geography, never have been, never will be.

Kathy,
If you have your locations entered in a consistent manner (Legacy is a true
database program that uses fields) the sort feature is great and it is fast.
The only time you would have a problem with the sort is if you don’t enter your
locations in a consistent manner. Even though it would
What a convoluted time consuming way that could easily be solved using one
simple search for "Individual > Any Place > Contains > Angus" that I can
think print out a list of names from and the whole process is over and done
with in 2 minutes tops.

Ignore my last post about this not working. I was using the Show People check
box and looking at the People Using This Location panel on the Master Location
Screen. Using the Option->Show List does bring up the full list of individuals
for all the selected locations in a pop-up screen.

Your suggestion didn't work when I tried it. I can select multiple locations
using ctrl-click or shift-click, but the Show People list only displays
individuals associated with the last location selected.

Another alternative is to tag the locations in the master location list (sorte

James,
James, I think your answer is the best.
Except I would be afraid to connect a Windoz
computer to the Internet due to security
issues I've had with Windoz in the past.
But if VNC is reasonably secure, than good.

As Michele recommended use the Master Location List. Using CTRL-click
you can highlight multiple locations (All those with your county in the
name). Then click on Options > Show List
This will display a search list of all the people who use one or more of
the highlighted locations
You can then tag

When you click Backup Family File, you should see the Customize Backup dialogue
box. Click on Select Name and Location for Data Backup, and set as desired. Do
the same for multimedia if you use that feature.
The locations must have got reset or changed when installing on Win 7.
I'm having to leave XP Pro to go to Win 7 Pro. When I backup my family
files in Legacy they show up with a logo on the desk top screen not in the
folder that I think I am saving to.
I have a Folder called Legacy and it has my family files in it. When I use

So you are wanting to find people that are listed in a county but not listed in
that same county if they are listed in a specific town? In other words, you
only want to see those listed in Angus, Scotland and not anyone that is listed
in a specific town in Angus?
I would do that in the Maste

Just to add my penny's worth.
I use the Master Location records but when you type in the Find box, I notice
that it will only search the first word of the first field of the current
location list below.
