[LegacyUG] Error problem, need help

2017-07-09 Thread Dennis Murphy
I have a mater database of 75K+ from which I am trying to extract my family
line of about 54K.. I never had any problem doing so in the nearly 25 years
I have been using Legacy until NOW!

I keep getting the message "Location 18835 not found" followed by a series
of numbers in parentheses such as (1, 19846) with the latter number often
different.

The screen instructs me to run the Repair/Check program under File
Maintenance, which I keep doing to no avail and no fix. Afterwards I get
"ERROR 3021 - no current record" I then looked up the Error number in the
Legacy Help menu and followed all suggestions. Sill I get the same results.

In desperation I tried the last suggested fix, which was to export the file
as a Gedcom, but that brought me back once again to the "Location 18835 not
found." So now I'm really stumped.

Does anyone know what that means? Is it referencing a geological location
or a person's data., marriage, event. etc.??

In short, any ideas how to fix this and save 30 years of work?

Re: [LegacyUG] Error problem, need help

2017-07-10 Thread Dennis Murphy
Thank you Cathy, you saved the day!

Indeed it was a missing story that caused the error and it would seem that
those numbers in parentheses are a clue to the Legacy location. (1, 18835)
The error occurs in my RIN #1 though I'm not sure about the 18835 as I do
not have that many stories in my file. But when I went to RIN #1 and tried
to open the story, I got my old familiar error message. I deleted the link
and then I was able to extract my family file from my master database with
no problems or errors.

Many Kudos Cathy

PS: if other list members have the same situation and get errors, here's a
little tip: When you go to back up the extracted file be sure to close the
other file or you will get "Backup Error 527" Close the master or larger
file and it will go without incident.

Re: [LegacyUG] Legacy Merger

2017-08-05 Thread Dennis Murphy
I also have used Legacy for years after trying every genealogy program in
the market, as well as some that no longer exist. In my opinion the
corporate concept that "bigger id better" was born from either sheer greed
or total ignorance. My first voyage into the online data posting was with
Rootsweb, because it vowed to always "remain free." Then along comes
Ancestry and they gobble up Rootsweb, adding their databases to Ancestry
World Tree. I know this to be a fact as beginner errors in my original
Rootsweb Gedcom have transferred over to the Ancestry database.

And now along comes MyHeritage and they "merge" with Millennia, which is
likely a quaint euphemism for "buy everything you got" including and
especially their programmers..The handwriting on the wall reads "open your
wallet" as we're going *a la carte..*

I quit using Family Tree Maker due to their corporate greed in making sure
each new version was incompatible with earlier versions, thus forcing you
to buy the next upgrade. And now Jack has his thumb in Legacy's plumb pie
and I wonder how long it will take before all prices go up.

Last but not least, it was but two weeks ago that I had to vehemently
protest to MyHeritage and one of its contributors about data posted on
their site concerning my "living" relatives. They did remove it but there
is no telling how long it was there and who may or may not have downloaded
it. While many sites do remove details about living persons, they do NOT
remove their names; none of the online databases that I know do this - but
they should! As any decent genealogist and/or identity thief knows, it's
not that difficult to find all sorts of information about a person given
their parents and siblings names.

There had better be a sure-fire way to "opt out" of any automatic grabbing
of any Legacy data by MyHeritage or I will be looking for yet another
genealogy program.

Re: [LegacyUG] a Warning, and another problem with the FAG

2017-10-12 Thread Dennis Murphy
Perhaps I'm missing something as I had this happen only once so far. I
found it annoying that Legacy only lists the FAG memorial number without so
much as the Legacy RIN or at least the name(s) of the individuals involved.
This forces you to exit Legacy, go to FAG site then plug in the listed
memorial number, just to find one of locations or persons involved. The
program should list the person's name and ID with the error message, not
just the FAG number alone.

Re: [LegacyUG] Ancestor Book Report

2017-11-16 Thread Dennis Murphy
I abhor blanks as well so I always use "Unknown" when a person or date is
unknown. Since my reports are usually sent to relatives and/or other
genealogists, I advisee them to please contact me regarding any of my
unknowns for which they may have better information. Also it's nice to be
able to readily spot this missing data and create Legacy search lists for
particular unknown items before heading out to the various repositories. To
keep my Master Name index in a logical order, I have a Master Surname as
(Unknown) so that a completely unknown person appears in my database as
Unknown (Unknown) - first with no parentheses and surname with parentheses.
It may seem awkward but it works and keeps well with lists and indices.

Re: [LegacyUG] Grayed-out names

2018-06-01 Thread Dennis Murphy
can someone explain "nulls" to me?

I have a large database and within it is my family tree so not all are
connected to it

In the past I have simply added, linked or merged folks as needed then
exported my line into a new Legacy file.

The last time I did this and then ran a Check/Repair I got a large log and
the message "fixing all nulls" or such

>From the log it looked like it had some to do with a child and parent but
no further explanation.

Since this had never happened before in all the years of the same
procedure, I wonder what's up.

I do this nearly every month and the previous version or file was about
27,000 KB larger despite the latest file containing 186 more individuals
and their data.

I am worried something may not be right.

Can anyone explain or expound?

Amen Pauline; automatic renewals should be outlawed. I guess they think we

Re: [LegacyUG] Error 3021-Dennis Murphy

2018-03-07 Thread Dennis Murphy
I'm trying to keep this thread going as per instructions and hope I'm doing
it correctly.

Anyway, whoever sent me the fact that the first number in the parentheses
refers to the location (RIN) of the problem, I thank you as it has allowed
me to fix the export problem. Despite all the Check & Repair runs, it seems
that some of my story links have been lost somehow. After fixing the
initial problem and attempting another export to a Legacy file, the dreaded
Error 3021 popped up again with different locations (three additional times
to be exact). When I searched for the story associated with the individual
and clicked on it, again an error message. However a double click restored
the link and now those issues seem to be fixed. I was thus able to export a
smaller Legacy file from my master database without further errors.

Not sure if this incident is attributable to my system (new Dell - Win 10)
or a glitch in the software. Sent the issue to support but no reply as yet.

Hope this helps others if they have same problem.

Re: [LegacyUG] Living/Deceased Status of Mothers with children where no Father details are entered

2018-03-06 Thread Dennis Murphy
Error 3021

This is not the first fight with this Error Number but it's the first one
on which all the Help menu suggestions fail to solve. The final resort and
ultimate "import to Gedcom" has not and likely, will not, be attempted due
to it's source alterations.

I have run the Check & Repair multiple times, even twice in one complete
Maintenance session. I have rebooted computer, tried again. Not sure if
reinstalling the Legacy program will work but that may be next.

The error message reads" Location 19152 not found (1009, 81) Error 3021" It
pops up every time I try to export a portion of my large database to
smaller Legacy family files. Running File Maintenance on the master or
larger database produces no errors; it only happens on the attempted
extraction of portions of the larger file - at least that's when I notice
it always.

My questions:
Does "Location 19152" refer to a specific geographical location?
How or where can it be found?
Do the numbers in parentheses refer to individual ID numbers where the
location is missing?

I have the latest Legacy build but hope for a new update soon to see if
that will fix the problem. There seems to be a lot of glitches still
floating around in Version 9 as these error messages pop up quite often.
Usually they can be fixed by following the suggestions but these LOCATION
ones seem to be a bear on the loose. Please help: I am open to any and all
suggestions

[LegacyUG] My problem

2018-03-22 Thread Dennis Murphy
Several decades ago, when my genealogy journey began, I was using Family
Tree Maker. After experimenting with Legacy, I was hooked and became a
convert. Back then the only way to bring your data into Legacy was to
create a Gedcom and import the same. As we know, the Gedcom format has its
own set of issues. The problem is as follows:

The process left me with lots of items unceremoniously dropped into the
Locations field of Legacy. Case in point for this email; I have had 570
social security numbers resting as "locations" in individual Events
sections. For some time now I have vowed to fix the matter once and for
all. Unless I am missing something (and I do so often) the only way I see
to delete them is by the painfully slow and tedious method of opening the
Events sections of each person, one at a time, doing the edit there, then
moving on to the next item. And so I ask the list: Does anyone know a
faster or easier method?

BTW all of the SSN are available in my Notes sections so there is no need
to save them in any way elsewhere; I just need some sort of batch delete
without losing all other "good" locations. Is that even possible or am I
forced into the previously mentioned "hard labor?"

Any and all help appreciated.

Dennis

Re: [LegacyUG] Looking for Ideas for Event Name - Before Marriage

2018-12-04 Thread Dennis Murphy
Presently I have 14 user defined events pertaining to Marriage such as
Marriage Bans, Marriage License, Marriage Certificate, Marriage Official,
etc. I try to set up Events that have documents or images associated with
them as event photos/images print with various books and reports.

In the case of your marriage ring, proposal, engagement, etc., there are
several possibilities that come to mind. In older times, engagement photos
were quite common but finding them among family heirlooms may not happen.
Into more modern time, newspapers often published engagement notices with
photos.

>From your post I get the impression that there might be some interesting
story or facts surrounding the marriage ring and/or proposal in question.
If so, I would create an event called Marriage Proposal, write the full
story in MS Word (or your favorite word processor), then attach the
document to the Marriage Proposal event. You could add images to the
document or simply attached the separately in the event.

Just a suggestion
