Thanks Cathy. At least it is not all my errors in this. I will give your
directions a try to see if I can get what I'm trying to accomplish. This
sounds closer to my goal. I'll have to play with the wording.

[LegacyUG] Still no solution regarding marriage records

2022-12-02 Thread Linda Greethurst
I did follow directions regarding linking the marriage record to the
source, etc. But that still does not print in a family group group -
unless I print the sources.

I'll try explaining this again regarding the Family Group sheet.
Birth: there's an icon under notes for adding images which links to the
birth record and the preferred image can be printed on the FGS and the
Individual Information page
Baptism: the process is the same as above.
Death: ditto
Burial: ditto
Marriage: ditto The same icon is available, I can add the image. BUT I
cannot get that image to print on any report except in the
footnotes/sources.

What am I doing wrong? Can anyone else get their marriage certificate image
to show on the FGS or the Individal Report?

So, do I have to create another event within Marriage events which says the
same thing as what I already entered in the top section of the marriage
data? That is redundancy and it does not create a nice read on any of the
report.

Or, do I created an Marriage event from the Individual Information page? -
then we are back to the repeating the same data and an awkward printed
report.

[LegacyUG] ***SPAM*** Re: ***SPAM*** Re: Printing marriage records

2022-11-30 Thread Linda Greethurst
Thanks Jenny - I understand what I need to do now. So do you link all your
photos of original documents to the source details as well as creating the
event? And you are creating this event within the marriage page, right?
Then when you print out your reports, you print out all the pictures in the
sources? Perhaps you are all digital?

But it still doesn't make sense to me. I add/link pictures of records to
birth, baptism, death, burial in the individual information page and they
print in the reports. Why can't the same be done with marriages? I don't
create events/facts for these other vital dates. And other events can be
shared, so sharing a marriage shouldn't be a problem. Hmm, maybe I need to
read/watch more carefully how to properly enter marriages PICNIC -
problem in chair, not in computer

Obviously I don't deal with programing and I have great appreciation for
those who do. So there must be a good reason it won't print a marriage
certificate for example, when there is the icon to link a picture within
the marriage page.

Thank you Jenny, for the leads and ideas.

[LegacyUG] Printing marriage records

2022-11-29 Thread Linda Greethurst
After scanning the marriage document, I open the marriage of the couple
from the family group page. Then I enter the date, place, etc. The last
step is to click on the Picture icon and I link the image of the marriage
document itself.

But this image does not print out - not on the family group sheet and not
on the individual page.

What setting(s) do I need to use:
Under family report option and the individual report optionsI have checked
anything and everything that could/would pertain to their marriage.
marriage status
   events for marriage
event options - all boxes checked
Under Pictures tab the following are checked:
Event pictures, shared Event Pictures, Story Pictures
Pictures to Print inline - All Preferred
Under Notes/Stories - check Marriage notes

No picture of the marriage record!

I do not have the marriage record associated with the master source
pictures or detail source pictures.

What am I missing? - the marriage record is so vital to establish a
relationship - it must be easier to get it to print the picture on reports.

Re: [LegacyUG] Tag column in names list

2022-10-02 Thread Linda Greethurst
Here's how I use the basic 9 tags:
1 - Direct Line
2 - Have copy of original birth record
3 - Have copy of original marriage
4 - Know the name cemetery where buried
5 - Have picture of tombstone
6 - Have copy of the obit
7 - Have copy of original death record
8 - open for current special research project (right now a list of 80+
people buried in one cemetery needing picture of tombstone - I now have the
section and plot numbers of each and entered into Legacy, photographing
field trip coming up in 2 weeks!)
9 - need a FindAGrave if in US

At a glance, I can tell what I have and what I'm missing without doing a
separate hashtag search.
Once I get my current #8 done, I will pick another "big" project and mark
them as tag 8.
I love going into my name list and seeing all those check marks for
everyone.

Only 8 and 9 are "NEEDS" and they change according to what I'm doing. I
use hash tags for other types of To-Do lists such as: To-Do - WWI Draft Reg
Card or To-Do - 1950 US Census. Tags and hash tags put order to my
research.

Re: [LegacyUG] "Dropped ?"pictures in a media backup

2022-07-12 Thread Linda Greethurst
Thank you Cathy for your quick response; I have made the media backup,
relinked but this didn't solve my issue. I have not renamed them, nor
moved them. So,I think I need to rephrase my problem.

There are 71 digitized images that WERE on my C drive in the correct
folders (a setup that I have been using for several years). Those images
ARE on the June backup. There were no missing links or images when I did
the June backup. Then I had to take a break from doing any research with
this family.

Last weekend I began working on this family again and added many images
from a new resource and did a backup. I get the report that I am now
missing 71 digitized images and they are not the new ones that I just
added. The links to the missing 71 are to the correct folders - I have
done the relink. and yes, that is where they are supposed to be. But the
images are NOT on the July backup nor anywhere on my computer EXCEPT in
that June backup which is in PC > Documents > Legacy Family Tree > Data >
and then the folder for that particular family. The relink now connects to
the photos in the backup. but the images are not on my computer other than
in that backup. I don't know where those images went or how they got
deleted.

So my question is: How do I get those photos back onto my C drive where
they belong instead of just in a backup. I can't move them, I can't copy
and paste them as I don't see those options available; I can't email them
to myself to resave and then relink.

If I do a media restore, then I will lose the new images I've been doing
recently, correct?

To clarify, I have all my Legacy on my desktop; data is entered only on
this desktop and there is only the one family file.
sigh,
Linda

[LegacyUG] "Dropped ?"pictures in a media backup

2022-07-11 Thread Linda Greethurst
I have two media backups - one dated 15 Jun, the other 10 July. The June
one had NO missing media but the July one is missing 71 pictures.

I have added pictures during that time span that are in the July backup.

Is there a way to merge these two backups and to keep the old 71 that are
missing and also keep the new (no idea how many)?

Any guidance on process to copy and paste the missing ones into the current
database? By the way ALL of my pictures and documents are in a series of
folders located on my C drive named Genealogical Images, which is also
designated as my default. But yet when I do a view location of Media
Folders, it lists both default and the C drive.

I still like my paper copies and notebooks and this reinforces it. How
much other stuff is now missing, dropped and lost from my backups?

Re: [LegacyUG] List of ALL Sources for 1 individual

2022-02-05 Thread Linda Greethurst
1. Click on REPORTS tab; then click on Family Group Reports icon and select
the INDIVIDUAL REPORT tab.
2. Bottom center box, click on REPORT OPTIONS
3. Click on SOURCES tab. Check the itty bitty box to "Print source
citations" then make sure sure to click the circle "As endnotes after each
report" AND click the box "Start on new page".
4. Click Close.
5. Now you are back on Select a Report. Click on PREVIEW box on the right
hand side.
6. From the preview, scroll to the last page or two where all the citations
are listed and you can then select one of the Print options from the boxes
on the right hand side.

If you want just a bibliography, go back the step 3 above and instead of
the selecting the as endnotes option read down and click the box that says
PRINT BIBLIOGRAPHY. Then proceed with step 4

Hope this helps.

Re: [LegacyUG] Software

2022-02-01 Thread Linda Greethurst
Ok people, enough of your complaining. Send your needs to support, request,
or wherever it should go. The purpose of this mailing list is to help
others learn to USE legacy as it is. This used to be a very active list
with lots of "how do I..." and I learned a lot about the program from this
list. I am not a fan of social media and do not like Facebook. And that
is my choice.

For me, and I would guess the majority of the users, Legacy does exactly
what they want; and perhaps even more, because they haven't yet learned all
the capabilities of the program. It is a wonderful genealogy database
program, and it is reasonably priced. It comes in , what?, about 35
languages and I'm sorry if your ancestors come from one of those area with
the unique character languages. There are other options for you - use
those programs and then complain to those companies about their
inadequacies.

Most of us don't want/need a program that prints great, great aunt Mary
Elizabeth's spouse's parents and all his siblings and their children in
reports. Please go to the trees online that are trying to get the universe
all in one place. Or, open Word in the keyboard language of choice and
write your own reports. You could even use a typewriter with the manual
special language keys used like for physics or geometry equations back in
the 50's and 60's.

I am not a name and BMD collector. I do family history, and Legacy allows
me to fill in all those events of a person's life; a place to keep the
stories; the sourcing options are extensive. I can add all kinds of
pictures and videos. I love the chronology report to see where I'm still
needing to do research on a person. It's perfect for getting to know your
ancestors. I even use the Research Guidance!

What I like best about Legacy is: I still get to do the thinking - there
are so many options on every screen. The program and computer do not make
those decisions for me. I am responsible for the data, I am responsible for
the backups, how many, and where they are.

So, for the sake of the majority of Legacy users, please, stop this
constant whining.

Re: [LegacyUG] Naming Images and documents

2020-05-09 Thread Linda Greethurst
What ever method you develop for your filing system: Keep It Simple,
Sensible (KISS)

Legacy already assigns everyone a RIN. I have 37 Ole Olsens in my lines.
I know, I have the Norse naming system to deal with too; so I know them by
their farm name but more importantly, I identify my files and pictures by
the RIN too, For example: Ole Olsen Aukrust RIN348 Baptism. Legacy's
Index tab is my quick reference to a person and a number.

My thought process is since I have already transcribed and translated the
document into Legacy, I really don't need to duplicate the info into the
filing label. So my system just tells me where to go to see the detail of
the document. Or am I overlooking something and making my filing too
simplified?

Re: [LegacyUG] Naming Images and documents

2020-05-08 Thread Linda Greethurst
Set it up how your mind thinks. I look at a media and think: Who? and
What? And that is how the following filing system developed.

I have a separate folder on my C drive called *Genealogical Images. *ALL
media goes into this folder.

Then I have 4 subfolders named for each of my four main *families* (based
on my and my husband’s grandfather's surnames-).

Each family is subdivided into four basic *topical folders*:

Cemeteries and Tombstones

Documents

Maps and Places

People Photos

Each Document folder is further subdivided into 11 *life events:*

  Bios and Articles

  Births and Baptisms

  Census

  Confirmation

  Deaths, Funerals and Obits

  Immigration and Citizenship

  Land

  Marriages and Anniversaries

  Military

  Signatures

  Wills and Probates

Each media is labeled [surname], [given name], [ID #], [document type] with
document type being obit; marr licence; 50th Anniv; land purchase; WWI
Draft Reg; etc

Brian, I am so glad this tip has been such a successful experience for you.
I have also been finding great record.

I talked with the person who put together the IGS newsletter and she got
the tip and process from a FamilySearch newsletter/blog.

[LegacyUG] Page 5 of the April IGS Newsletter (in case you missed it)

2020-04-01 Thread Linda Greethurst
New (to me) search process with FamilySearch. I didn't even notice this
option of searching Images! I've been in this section - unknowingly - many
times, but I sort of get there through the side door.

EXPLORE HISTORICAL IMAGES TOOL UNLOCKS DATA IN DIGITAL RECORDS Have you
ever tried searching for your ancestor’s name in online records?
FamilySearch, FamilySearch partners, and volunteers worldwide have worked
to make over 3 billion records easily findable online with a very simple
name search.
But did you know that these indexed records represent only 20 percent of
the historical records FamilySearch has available online? If you haven’t
found your ancestors by using the main search form on FamilySearch.org, it
may be that their information is locked inside a waiting-to-be-indexed
digital image. In 2018 alone, FamilySearch added over 432 million new
record images to its online collections. But it can take years to catalog
and index these images so they can be readily searched. Fortunately, the
tools for finding the record image you need online are improving
dramatically.

Well ahead of any formal indexing or cataloging, the new *FamilySearch
Explore Historical Images tool* can help you find records about your
ancestors more easily, even when their information is not text-searchable
and seems to be locked inside a digital image. An Image-Centered Search
Experience Explore Historical Images marks the beginning of a new and
different search experience. With this tool, images produced from
FamilySearch’s 300+ digital cameras worldwide is made almost instantly
available.

Explore Historical Images helps you navigate to images of historical
records that could contain information about your ancestors. Although you
aren’t able to search for your ancestor by name directly, you are able to
narrow your search by place, date, and other information that was captured
when the image was taken.

To try out the tool, head over to FamilySearch.org, and click Search and
then Images in the main menu. Then follow these steps:
1. Search for Records from a Specic Place Start by typing in a significant
place for your ancestor (for example, where the person was born, wed, or
buried).
2. Pick a Record Collection to Browse
3. Browse Record Images For the complete instructions go to
https://www.familysearch.org/blog/en/explore-historical-images/

[The writer of thi article said} I found my father’s birth certificate in
just a few minutes.

Re: [LegacyUG] Survey - Syncing

2020-03-29 Thread Linda Greethurst
I use the Legacy cloud for the data - no extra app needed; simple to use.
Backup on one computer; restore on the other.

I do date entry ONLY on the desktop; pictures are linked on the desktop;
all backed up to external drive and a flash drive too. I use the laptop to
carry around with me while researching. And I also use Families for my
phone. Again, easy syncing from desktop to phone.

Re: [LegacyUG] Ancestor/Descendant Interest settings

Thanks Cathy, that process is what I have been doing. Just hoping for a
shortcut. I'm just working one state at a time - then most of the lists
aren't all that huge. It's slow, but does make me pause and think about
each person - that might be a good thing too.

I have not used this tool and just realized that the levels are

ancestor interest level 3.

Perhaps because the picture is associated with the SOURCE instead the
EVENT. I think the + is for the events on the Individual Information

Re: [LegacyUG] Lists - Surnames and area

2020-02-14 Thread Linda Greethurst
For the surname list: Go to VIEW, then MASTER LISTS, scroll down to
SURNAMES. Go to OPTIONS and select PRINT.

For location and who was associated with that spot: Go to VIEW, then
MASTER LISTS, scroll down to LOCATIONS. Go to OPTIONS, select PRINT and
then select PRINT REPORT. There are 2 tabs with multiply choices. You can
choose along the way to see just tagged locations, all of them, the
untagged ones - however you wish to play with the list.

Re: [LegacyUG] Surname Changed When Immigrated ;-)

2019-11-24 Thread Linda Greethurst
When I started my genealogical research many years ago, I was told to
ignore spelling (one s or double s; D or T; -son or -sen; kn or just n;
etc). Say the name out loud - if it sounds familiar, consider it and
research it. Best lesson I learned.
The reason was that the average person before 1880 usually got no more than
an 8th grade education and more likely only 5th grade. Spelling was not a
top priority. Don't get hung up on spelling and which version is correct.
Sure enough - I have a legal document with the main person's surname
spelled 5 different ways.

Re: [LegacyUG] Location names for Pennsylvania

2019-08-01 Thread Linda Greethurst
Like the others, I do use the 4 comma separations - the majority of the
time. I was taught to always enter the location as it was called AT THE
TIME OF THE EVENT. I have many locations that I cannot fill the 4 sections
because the location didn't adhere to that structure - it was a territory,
a plantation, a hundred, a colony! Or even the parish was the record keeper
of the larger area.
But humans just love to set up jurisdictions and then apply laws. For a
record to survive it had to be kept at some level which was located
someplace. The local jurisdictional name is what needs to be identified.
Everybody who lived in that locality knew that jurisdiction - it didn't
have to be named on every document. That would depend on the reason for
the document: Goverment record such as land or court usually, church
records not so much. Then, if need be, use the wonderful, copious places
called notes Legacy has built in to the program to enter an explanation
regarding that location at that time.
There is not a rule that you HAVE TO fill every blank spot in the location
fields.

Re: [LegacyUG] Does anyone know about {}

2019-05-01 Thread Linda Greethurst
I don't like the new brackets as I think they make a report look "messy" or
cluttered.

But, for those who really like them, I would appreciate the options to
toggle the brackets on or off. Then we would ALL have the control of the
program that we enjoy.

Re: [LegacyUG] Programmers?

2018-09-17 Thread Linda Greethurst
I have used Legacy since version 3. I'm one of those "smucks" who doesn't
know anything about programming except that it is not simple to get
everything to work correctly and still have so many variances. I'm also
one of those who spends time learning to use the program by watching and
reading tutorials, user groups, webinars - then ask questions if I still
can't figure it out. And I have had very, very few problems with Legacy
and have been very satisfied with it. Each version makes the whole even
more complicated, powerful and it is still very reasonably priced.

Instead of this constant complaining about Legacy, perhaps you all should
get together and write your own program and call it "My Perfect Software
Just For Me".

This User Group is for learning how to use the Legacy software as it is
designed right now - not what some of you want it to be. Gripping doesn't
solve anything. How about this: If you can't be helpful, then be quiet!
 Please?

Re: [LegacyUG] Research Notes

2018-08-30 Thread Linda Greethurst
Forgot to add:
After you have your list, then you can tag them; or create a focus group.
With either of these options, then you can go to REPORTS; then FAMILY
REPORTS; then INDIVIDUAL REPORT. Then, in the Report OPTIONS clear
everthing except the identification factors (name, RIN, etc) from the
INCLUDE tab; and from the NOTES/STORIES tab, select only RESEARCH Notes.
Also click SOURCES tab and select the appropriate box.
Close the options box and now back to SELECT a REPORT. Now, make your
selection at the very bottom row of boxes.

Re: [LegacyUG] Research Notes

2018-08-30 Thread Linda Greethurst
Go to SEARCH, then FIND, then DETAILED SEARCH.
Primary Condition:
Look for: INDIVIDUAL
Where to look: click on arrow, scroll down to NOTES-RESEARCH
How to look: click on arrow, select NOT EQUAL TO
What to look for: leave empty
Double check that the little box in front of Second Condition is NOT CHECKED
Select at the lower left: Clear List before this search
Then, click on the box CREATE LIST

This should bring up a list of all the names who DO have research notes.
When looking at the resulting list, make sure that the radio button in
front of RESEARCH has been selected. This method has worked for me.

Re: [LegacyUG] Name list print and/or export

2018-07-28 Thread Linda Greethurst
For 1)
>From the top row of tabs click on this sequence: SEARCH > FIND > Detailed
Search. Next screen: Look for Whom: Individual; Where to look Tag _(enter
the tag # you used); How to look: Equal to; What to look for: tagged
Be sure to check the top radio button to "Clear List before this search"
Now, click on box "Create List"

At the top left is how many people have that tag number.
Click on Options box at the bottom; about half way down is "Print:"

That's it.

2) I hope someone else has steps for this - I've not had success with this
kind of list and I've been trying to figure it out too.

Re: [LegacyUG] How can update my other computer for Legacy

2018-01-11 Thread Linda Greethurst
I have a desktop (my "anchor" machine that I do the data entry) and two
laptops (one that accesses local network and the other that is on the web
for only one purpose -which will be explained).

I use the cloud feature when backing up my data. Whenever I open a
database, regardless of which computer I am on, the first thing I do is to
restore from the cloud my database. But I also have an external drive that
I save to twice a month from my anchor machine (after doing a restore from
the cloud) and I have several flash drives. I might explain that I do NOT
have all of my families on 1 database. I have 4 databases based on my four
grandparents who do not overlap until they get to me. The flash drives get
updated as I work on a particular family

The other laptop - it is older and slower, like me - but I get on the web
only to update the program and once a week to update the 4 databases (from
the cloud of course). This is the only time this computer is being used.

This may seem like a lot of overkill - but in the beginning, I entered a
large number of family members back in the 1980's. The computer crashed
and my TAPE had become corrupted. And Commodore was out of business. At
least I had printed copies. New computer; I re-enter this large family
again, from scratch, only to have it become corrupted a few years later due
to a lightening storm/power surge when our neighborhood took a hit. By now
I was starting to hate this family! So, 30 years later, I have back ups
and more back ups. I will not re-enter this family from scratch again -
not that it is that much larger - just a lot more information on each
individual. (But I still have my most current paper copies - yep, I
support the ink and paper industry.)

So long story made shorter - use the backup/restore buttons to work between
computers. But remember, that is only for the database - not the media.
That has to be done manually.

Martha,
I did a text file of both the FGS and Ind Reports including all events and
notes and I did not run into the same problem as you have shown. I had 5
totally different types of events from two census, confirmaton, church
membership, employment and they all show as unique as they are supposed to
be.
Someone with a whole lot more tech knowledge than me (and that won't take
much!) will have to add their expertis.

Martha -
I think I have this one figured out.
Before I start entering my notes for an event, I press "Enter" and then
start my notes. This basically leaves the first line empty in the note
field and the notes will print out all nicely grouped on the lines
following the description, instead of just continuing on the same line.
Just like you want them, I think.

Re: [LegacyUG] Is Legacy falling apart?

2017-10-01 Thread Linda Greethurst
Ian,
I have to add my own comments here. Boy, you sure are having a frustrating
time! I have had none of your problems. But I just install Legacy where
they design it to be installed. Then by it's design, Legacy lets ME be in
control with all the parameters (options). The way the whole program is
set up, it works exactly how I tell it to. In other words, Legacy doesn't
do all your work for me. If I don't like the way something appears, it is
100% usually my fault, not Legacy's. I have found that taking the time to
learn all the little tools (like the up and down arrows when clicking on
the marriages icon to put the spouses in the correct order) has saved me a
lot of headaches down the road.
I'm thinking with all the troubles you are having, somehow something got
screwed up in the installation onto you computer or you have other programs
that interacting/syncing or whatever it's called. Granted, I am definitely
not a programmer, or even very computer literate. But it looks like my
ignorance is bliss as I don't have the drama and trauma that you are
experiencing.
Since the database is in a separate folder in your documents, have you
considered just uninstalling all the stuff in the download and user files,
etc. (someone who knows what all they are will help tell you which ones
they are) and then doing a new, clean install; then just *restore* your
database?
Or maybe you have tried that already and I just missed that message. If
so, I'm sorry I sent this message.

[LegacyUG] Publishing with Legacy tools

2017-09-27 Thread Linda Greethurst
I have been trying to get 5 generations of one limb as completely
researched as possible, pictures and documents scanned in, maps, as many
events as I could find, good documentations, etc. in anticipation of
"publishing" this info for Christmas gifts this year.

Right now I have several notebooks; but everything in the notebook is also
on the computer. I don't want to make multiple copies of the notebooks,
nor do people have the space for storing all those notebooks. So, I want
to use the Legacy publishing tools.

I would really appreciate helpful hints and pitfalls to avoid. I'm not
sure which report I want to use yet. I am familiar with 3 of the styles
offered by Legacy - but not the multiple lines of descent report (how it
looks or is set up).

The other question - is the publishing center used to just so"free wheel"
your own version of what to include and in what order? And then you don't
use the other formats?

Later on, after all this is done, I MIGHT be interested in creating a web
page - expeciallyl for the younger generations.. But this Christmas gift
is a priority now.

Re: [LegacyUG] Family Group Sheet issue

2017-08-13 Thread Linda Greethurst
Hi Ruth, thanks for the suggestion. I tried it out, but it did not removed
that formated Children on the family group sheet. It deleted other lines
that were blank (ie baptism date and place - which I did not have). So I
know that work on other situation.

No matter what I do, besides the Children box there is also a rather large
spacing before any of the marriage notes that I want to be printed.

Perhaps there is not an option for when a couple had no children for that
to be reflected on the FGS.

[LegacyUG] Family Group Sheet issue

2017-08-13 Thread Linda Greethurst
When I print a family group sheet, it always prints the label and shaded
box for Children.
No problem with that EXCEPT when the couple did not have any children. I
have checked the box in the marriage information page that they had no
children.

What other setting am I missing?
If no kids, but have to have the Children box show - how can I add the note
to read "this couple had no children"
Or
not have that Children box in the first place.

I like to use the family group sheet in my notebooks as a family "at a
glance" and to identify the rest of the family members if there are any.
With that children box, it appears that my research is not finished.

Re: [LegacyUG] Concerns about MyHeritage

2017-08-05 Thread Linda Greethurst
As I understand it, Legacy will continue to be its own program just as it
always has been.

To share your data with MyHeritage, FamilySearch, Ancestry or any other
commercial online tree - including DNA trees- has ALWAYS been your choice.
If you choose to put your data online, you are responsible to know what you
are getting into first. You know what kind of information gets put on
public trees - some is good, some is terrible. You are in total control
of the decision to add your information. Legacy doesn't do it
automatically for you. They are just trying to facilitate a method of
transfer for you - IF that is what you want. What happens after that
transfer of data to a new location is not a Legacy problem.

Legacy is a powerful and complicated program and I'm guessing that many of
us utilize only about half of the features consistantly. I'm sure Geoff
and the rest of the team have done a lot of study ahead of time before
committing to the merger. Gee, I bet they even know something about future
plans that we don't even have a clue. Give them a chance. No program is
going to be so perfect that it will do everything that every one of us
want. But boy, Legacy sure fits the bill perfectly for me and I choose not
to put my trees online.

So, like Donna says "wait and see"before you start throwing out the barbs.
It's your choice.

[LegacyUG] Preview for Chronology Comparison Report

2017-06-12 Thread Linda Greethurst
I have read Legacy 9 Unlocked and Geoff just clicks on the Preview button
and sees it on screen. He flips to view it often. This look great and so I
am trying it on a couple of my own individuals.

My problem: I click on Preview button and it automatically goes to my
printer. I tried the Reset button, no change. I tried to create a PDF, it
went to the printer. I have tried to access the report from the Quick
Access, the Chronology Report and Other Reports. I haven't found the Merge
Information Report screen yet.

I know there are all kinds of information on every screen, little boxes to
check or uncheck - but the life of me, I cannot find what I'm doing wrong.
I don't see anything in the customize/settings either - yet. Any ideas?

[LegacyUG] One event will not print

2017-06-03 Thread Linda Greethurst
I have a family nicely documented, sourced, etc for all their events in the
US. Now I have found their immigration. It is the first "Events/Facts"
for each the father, mother and their two children.

It shows up in the chronology where it belongs.
It shows up in the correct location when I view the Events/Facts.
But when I want to do an Individual Report for any of the 4 individuals, it
is NOT THERE! It will not print out in the reports.

Is there some setting or DLL that I am missing?

Re: [LegacyUG] Tip of the Day

2017-04-27 Thread Linda Greethurst
Just to share: I couldn't see the relationships on my family view screen
even though I had run the tool to set relationships.

Then I realized that when I downloaded Version 9, my customized setting had
reset. I had white text on a white background!!!
Easily fixed - happy again. Love Version 9.

I have no idea how long it has been there! It's a direct link to Research
Guidance. I guess I never noticed it before - or maybe it wasn't in color
before. But the last build date was almost a month ago (25 Feb), so it's
been there and colored at least that long. There is so much to see on
every page - I miss a lot of it.

Re: [LegacyUG] Help-adding media to Legacy

2017-02-13 Thread Linda Greethurst
Cathy, thank you for your guidance. I did look at the help and that was
what I was trying to follow. But, some days, my mind just doesn't
comprehend what my eyes are seeing. I WILL go back and try this again.

I have watched just about every one of Geoff's webinars and there isn't one
just on using the Media Gallery and Picture Center. Perhaps I will follow
up on contacting him. But maybe most people don't have a problem
understand all the hints and tips of this tool like I do. I'll think about
this.

Cathy, thank you for all your help to this Legacy UG. I'm sure many people
like me do appreciate it.

Re: [LegacyUG] Help-adding media to Legacy

2017-02-12 Thread Linda Greethurst
Ian,
Thanks for asking. Yes, I did figure out the video part.. The key was to
get the video onto my 'puter and getting it saved where I wanted it (in my
case, within a folder on my C drive called Genealogical Images which
contains ALL of my other types of media). Once I got it on my 'puter, then
the process was exactly the same as linking a picture or a document.

I had used the Internet Website at first, but I knew I couldn't depend on
that web address remaining stable; and I also know about the Wayback
Machine for finding those old sites. But that wasn't what I wanted.

I wanted all the media in the same location on the local 'puter (and
therefore easier to backup too). So I knew downloading was the solution -
I just didn't know how to do it since I couldn't find a download button on
YouTube. The key: got to find that other program for the download and I
understand there are several out there. YTD did it for me this time. But
the potential malware issue does concern me.

But the other question was dealing with Sound Media. I have played with
the slide show in Legacy and I wanted to add music to it. I've got the
music on the 'puter. But when I select the slide show, and I click the box
to Play Sound - nothing happens. I thought I had loaded it properly within
the Legacy process; I've done a check and repair, shut downs, more file
maintenance - but no sound. I'm not doing something correctly.

Hey, Geoff R- you seeing this? How about a webinar on all the ways of
using the Media Gallery and then also utilizing Picture Center to the max
--with lots of examples of how-to.

I do have Windows 10 and the video plays just fine on Movies & TV within
Windows 10. Also do have Media Player too. But thanks for the heads up as
some of my stuff doesn't play on Movies & TV. But that isn't stuff
associated with the Legacy program or the linking. So that is some other
issue to sort out later.

Ian, I don't understand this sentence.

Bear with me please, basically, I am a hardcopy type of person - paper
doesn't need to be constantly updated. And Legacy is a fantastic program
for managing my data. But I don't depend on/trust my computer so I make
good use of Reports. But they don't print videos!

So I have this video which explains/shows my dad's occupation and I now
have it on my computer and linked in Legacy. I have to do more to it
occasionally in the future to keep it view-able?

Are there other Legacy users confused with this or is it just me?

OK. I understand this which is why I am interested in downloading the
video to my 'puter. My next question: in the Media Center>Add Media there
is the option of Internet Website. If this is not a good idea, why is it
included? Or is there some other advantage of using this option?

I did the free version of Malwarebytes, and my "puter is nice and clean.
So do the malware keep coming through each update of YTD or each time I
access it? Or is the junk also coming through YouTube. I really liked how
YTD worked - so easy. But I don't see myself using it a whole lot long
term. Guess maybe I should just get the Premium Malwarebytes, huh?

To Brian and Ralph - do you guys have other programs to recommend. Or
would it be better in the long run to just link the website address of a
particular video into Legacy?

Really trying -- to understand.

2017-02-11 Thread Linda Greethurst
John, yes that helps a lot. I did download the YTD program and I did get
one video downloaded and linked!!! Now to do a couple more so that I know
what I was doing and that it wasn't an accident. Then on to adding sounds
to Legacy.

John, thanks for the great lead regarding the program.
I have learned the lingo associated with pictures such as pixels,
resolutions, and the various extensions. But I'm really in the dark with
the sound and video. According to the Legacy Help, it mentions using MP3,

lagging on those extensions or does Legacy not play well with MP4 - yet?

[LegacyUG] Help-adding media to Legacy

2017-02-11 Thread Linda Greethurst
I know how to add pictures, documents and websites with the Media Center.

But for the life of me, I cannot get videos or sound to work. I have music
on my computer, but I cannot get it to work with the "Play Sound" for a
slide show. I also have a couple of movies and videos that I've made, but
cannot get them to work either. And along the same line, I found a
historical movie clip on YouTube which shows my father's occupation which
is now an obsolete job. Do I add it to the media center it as a website; or
can it be downloaded to the computer and then linked as a video? I don't
find a download button, but I have set up playlists and have it on that so
that I can easily find it again.

I need the baby step version please for linking sound and video. The Help
section just doesn't help me at all. Thanks so much.

Re: [LegacyUG] patronymic names

2016-11-25 Thread Linda Greethurst
The patronym IS the normal surname if you are researching those areas who
have subscribed to that practice. If a surname ends in a variation of
"son, sen" or "datter, dotter" then you KNOW it was a patronym. Anything
else identifies a residence where they lived at some point in their life.
Those other names often changed within a person's lifetime. So for
example, if Ole Petersen lived in one place when he was baptized, but lived
somewhere else when he was married and lived a third place when he died, he
would have 3 different "residence names" but he was still Ole Petersen.
The inclusion of the residence in a name was a means of separating
individuals who also had the name of Ole Petersen. In Legacy I use the
AKA's to identify the residence name. By the way, I have 27 direct line
Ole Olsen's in my family tree and that residence name keeps them all unique
individuals (along with the RIN that Legacy assigns them).

Re: [LegacyUG] Individual's Information - Events/Facts column tab positions.

2016-10-27 Thread Linda Greethurst
Dean,
When you are finished resizing the columns in the Index view to the way you
want them, go to Options (top right hand corner) and select Customize
Columns. On the next screen, you will see on the right the boxes Load and
Save. Click on the Save; another box pops up, highlight an empty number
and at the bottom call this something like " Basic". Keep the name short
and sweet. That has held my resizing issues. You can save up to 10
different versions for your Index for example just show birth, baptism and
location; or just marriage and spouses, etc. and you can then quickly LOAD
them without havving to do all the resizing again. By the way, this works
on the Descendant view too. The key is Options, then Customize Colums,
then save or load.
Hope this helps.

If you turn off (click the box to remove the check mark) the Potential

Re: [LegacyUG] Events, Event Notes, Regular Notes

Dick Nixon,
Thanks for the input. I didn't think of the Vital notes titles printing at
the end of the report when there aren't any notes entered.
Yes, I will have to play with a person in the sample file to see what
happens with all the reports. Like I said, I'm still thinking about this
and trying to anticipate the problems so I appreciate the "heads-up" on
this issue.

Re: [LegacyUG] Events, Event Notes, Regular Notes

2016-07-09 Thread Linda Greethurst
The idea of having the notes for the vital events within the chronology
(instead at the end of the report) has gotten me thinking about applying it
to my own family. Before I do anything however, I need some other eyes
and thoughts- - - what would be the problems of doing it this way down the
line? For example, regarding doing searches.

Here's my thought process:

I'm toying with the idea of the event called "Death Data" and then in the
notes for that event I could include all the research history like time of
death, the informant, and those other more obscure information; the sources
(either sourcing them within the body of the notes, or using the footnote
sourceing); I could include the alternate dates, places and why one is
wrong or why it might be a better, etc. I would be able to explain and
source exactly what info I got from the state Death Certificate, or a
church record or a Family Bible.

Then I could do the same for "Birth Data", "Baptism Data" and "Marriage
Data". The resulting individual report would have all that info in a
timely order. I would keep the top part of the report for just the vital
dates and places to be used as a quick reference.

This wouldn't be that hard to change as I could just cut and paste the
vital note section into the new event item as that is where I already put
all the above discussion

Now, everyone's input???

Re: [LegacyUG] Showing marriage tags

2016-06-22 Thread Linda Greethurst
Jenny and Sherry,
Thank you - yep, just sitting there slapping me in the face!! I was
looking in the settings for a place to change the marriage tags. In the
individual pages, I have tags 4, 5, 6 showing right now and those were the
tags also showing in the marriage tags. So assumed they were the same, but
didn't understand why the "x" from the individual pages weren't showing
up. Oh, those wrong assumptions hit again.

So now, instead of just 9 tags on individual pages, I have another 9 tags
under marriages. ALL RIGHT!!! I like to use the tags to show what
events/research that I DO HAVE DONE; and I can see at a glance what I'm
missing.

Thank you.

When looking at the family view of a person who has had multiple marriages:
-click on the marriage icon in his/her section (NOT on the marriage bar)

Half of my tree is Norwegian where the woman does not taken her husband's
name. (At least not until late 1800 or early 1900's depending on the
area.) I went to Customize > #2Data Entry > #2.8Rule for generating
default married names and using the drop down box, selected the first
option of 0-none- don't generate married names.

Thanks seems to answered the situation for me as my Norwegian side is in
it's own family file. Because of several major cultural differences, I
have my German side in it's own file. This 2.8 option works in the family
file only, not global. So if you have only one family file for all your
ancestors, this option most likely will not work for you.

Re: [LegacyUG] Descendant Narrative Book report and Shared Events

2016-04-19 Thread Linda Greethurst
Leon and Cathy,
Thank you for your thoughts regarding the printing with shared events,
especially for census. I sort of suspected that I might be getting lazy
and wanted Legacy to read my mind instead of what I selected!

I am playing with and learning how to use the Shared Events to see if I
like using them- - and have discovered this frequent repetition is one
factor that is not necessarily one I will continue to choose for census.
However, the shared events certainly is great for establishing individuals
and roles for bapatism sponsors, or marriage sponsors, or even pall
bearers, witnesses for a will, etc.

typo again. NOW it is in the master list in caps. I edited it, closed out

back to it, yes, it had changed to all caps - in the master list and in the
data entry pages.

Susan,
There was no Ira in the master list on the sample file when I added it.
But not it is in the master list and it is capitalized - just the IRA.
H, does April 15 have anything to do with it? :)

Scott,
I tried it in the Sample family, and it DID capitalize the city name of
Ira. Not initially, but after I moved my cursor from the program to my
other monitor, all of a sudden, it is in CAPS.

I think we need help from the Legacy people on this one. I will be
interested in seeing the solution.

[LegacyUG] Descendant Narrative Book report and Shared Events

2016-04-17 Thread Linda Greethurst
The example first:
I have a married couple and their 4 children. The census years covered by
this family begin in 1860 through 1940. More precisely using the 1880
census: I enter the census under the head of household and then transcribe
the census. I click "share event", select the names, adjust their roles as
indicated on the census. Before I click save, I also click the little box
that says "Add the main event notes to the sentence."

I like this feature when I am looking at just one individual in the family
as I can see the full transcription and just where that person "fits" into
the family- which I think is imiportant. And this is good when I need to
share just that one individual with someone else - they will get the full
picture.

BUT - when I do a descendant Narrative book, that one 1880 census is now
repeated in it's entirety 6 times - for the head, for his wife, and for
each of the 4 kids. This is not only taking up a lot of paper/ink space,
but it gets really boring to read. And I have lots of census for this
family.

If I put the transcription into the footnotes, then there are lots of
repeat footnotes that also get boring. If I choose the option to not
include "add main event notes.." then I lose the overview of the family.

So, the question: is there a way in the descendant narrative to have it
printed once and not repeat? Or would I have to use the notes or override
sentence on the "role page" for the wife and each child. This latter
options seems to defeat the purpose of the shared event in the first
place?? Or am I missing something.

Or is this one of those "you just have to do some of your own work - it's
your tree and the program can't do everything for all people."

Looking forward to the ideas and comments.

Thank you so much for the links - already having fun exploring the parish
clerks website. I do have (just got it) the book "The Parish Clerk" - very
interesting seeing it all fitting together.
I didn't say exactly anyone or place. But they were in Middlesex (Staines
and Shepperton), northern Surry (Lambeth and that whole area just south of
the Thames) and Debtford/Lewisham. At least that I have identified so far.

Re: [LegacyUG] How to Print Text/Comments in Sources

2016-04-12 Thread Linda Greethurst
Customize 7.3 and click the box in front of the 3 and 4th items. (I have
the first two also checked. Be sure to click the APPLY buton and then the
Save button.

I might suggest that you go to the Sample family and create a source with
the text and comments for anyone and then make these above selections,
apply and save. See what happens by going back and previewing the
Descendant book of the sample family. Is that what you want? This is not
a global change to all your family data bases. So doing the testing with
the sample family you don't have to worry about making a major mistake.
(Geoff would never recognize his family from my sample data base!!!)

Re: [LegacyUG] Question on entries

2016-04-12 Thread Linda Greethurst
Ed,
My initial thought is that these are two different children. I would look
for a death record of the first one (b1799).
But even if you don't find a death, I would still keep them as 2 separate
entities until you can prove differently. Not sure what nationaliy you are
working with but Peter (Petri) and Joseph (Josephus) were both Saints
names, so if they both survived childhood one might be called Petri and the
other Joseph. Or they could have been named after grandfathers who had
similar names. Just my 2cents worth.

Re: [LegacyUG] How do I enter English locations in Legacy

2016-04-12 Thread Linda Greethurst
Thank you everyone for the explanations and I really like the samples. I am
new to research in England - just getting started. Lots of flexibility
over the years, isn't there. Much studying and research on the history is
ahead before I can really do more accurate genealogy data entry. I have
printed off all the notes for closer study. I had seen discussion on
locations but not specifically for England. Thanks again for taking the
time to answer my questions so positively. I am beginning to see why I
can't find some of the ancestors - I'm probably looking in the wrong place,
wrong record set.

Phil and Eliz,
thank you for the links. I'm just getting started with the English
research and really feel overwhelmed - even when it is in English!!!. My
immigrant was born in 1804, his father in 1790 and the grandfather I think
mid 1700. And that's when I realized I dont' know what I'm doing. These
websies will be studied closely.

Pat,
When you open your Legacy program, there 6 tabs right under the ribbon.
The first one is Legacy Home and the Legacy News is right there at the
top. It is updated as articles come out. Each title heading is a link
(even though it might not be blue) - just click on any article title that
grabs your attentions for the "rest of the story"!

[LegacyUG] How do I enter English locations in Legacy

2016-04-12 Thread Linda Greethurst
This note pertains to a bit of history, geography and using Legacy to enter
the info. I want to clearly designate the difference between the locations
of church events such as baptism and burial and the civil events such as
birth and death.

In the US we have city (or township if referring to a farm), then county,
then state, and then country. For example I would enter: Des Moines, Polk
County, Iowa, USA. I use the word "County" as Des Moines city is not in
Des Moines county. The name of the church itself would go into the notes
under the baptism address, right?

But I am confused with English locations; and I think I am mixing up church
and civil juridictions. In England, isn't a "parish" a larger area than
just a church building? Can there be more than one church/congregation
within a "parish" jurisdiction?

Example, I have a guy baptized on 12 Dec 1748 at St. Nicholas Parish,
Shepperton, Middlesex, England, United Kingdom.
That would be a church location for a church function. But what would be
the birth location if he were born in Shepperton. He wasn't born in the
church building itself as far as I know. Do I use the jurisdiction of
"Hundred" (which I haven't really figured out yet). I don't know if he was
born in the village of Shepperton, or on a rural residence.

Then he died in 1816 in Deptford, Kent, England -so now I have just three
places? Is there a smaller unit of an address to pinpoint where Deptford
is than just Kent?

Is "England" enough - properly? Do I need to include "United Kingdom"? I
do not use "USA" for pre 1776 events - that is not a proper location.

So the basic questions: What are the 4 crucial "names" go into the four
slots for the civil birth location?
What "names" go into the four slots
for the church baptism location?
   What other "location" information
would I need to include in the notes section?

I am aware of the option to omit leading commas for easier reading to the
non-genealogist. And I know I can use more than 4 slots, but then the sort
order gets "out of sorts". Thus, what are the 4 vital names.

Any suggestions or guidelines would be helpful. Thank you in advance.

[LegacyUG] The USER Group purpose?

2016-04-11 Thread Linda Greethurst
Ok, people. This is NOT supposed to be the Legacy Whiners Group! Pull up
your big person pants and adjust/adapt. This isn't Facebook, never has
been Facebook and probably never will be Facebook. Get over it.

This is a USERS group. Share with the rest of us YOUR tips on how you USE
the program. Allow the rest of us to ask questions with honest answers
from lots of people on how to do a process. We are all aware that there is
always more than your way of doing things. I don't need to know about
your programming skills - I want to know how to USE Legacy. What little
hints have you learned?- then share them. What major discovery have you
made using the program that made your data entry/analysis easier? - share
them.

So, - quit with the whining and negative comments. ENUF - OK?! No more
comments like we've had for the last 3 months.

Let's start being helpful and sharing - and all become better genealogists
by how we USE Legacy.

Re: [LegacyUG] Unlinking part of my tree

2016-03-22 Thread Linda Greethurst
June,
I too had a "sick" branch on my tree with all kinds of errors - in this
case mostly due to a guy named Gustave Anjou, a "professional" genealogist
in the early half of the 1900 who "created" genealogies - several in my
line and other genealogists had used his information for their own. So I
don't know where the creativity/inaccuracies begin and what was truth.

It was easier for me to just lop off the whole branch and start all over.
Yes, DELETED about 1300 names starting with a great-grandmother and 8
generations with huge families of 12-16 kids who also had huge families.

I'm starting with a clean mind and I am spending my time looking for
original records instead of trying to figure out where my/his mistakes were
or even whose family trees online are correct or not. There were several
families who all had the same kids, same vital records but living in
totally different places, sourcing on my part was far from very good anyway.

Now I am working on accuracy as I go and I am not in a big rush to collect
names. I want to leave an excellent, well sourced and accurate genealogy
behind for my family. Why give them a bunch of junk? And if I don't get
it ALL done, then they will get to have some of the fun of researching too.

Good luck.

"Headings and Footers" does not address the locations of the footnotes.
But I don't see the option for footnotes on each page with an *individual*

Re: [LegacyUG] Help needed to create a special report

2016-03-09 Thread Linda Greethurst
Cathy,
I'm playing with your 2nd idea to see if I can get that one to play well!
I think I am trying to get too specific with two different types of reports
when trying to combine them.

BUT now I'm thinking to view the people list with each of my tagged
locations and tag the direct line with another unused tag and then do a
search for just that tag. I think that might work without doing the
export. That might get me close to what I want. Tomorrow's project.

Re: [LegacyUG] Help needed to create a special report

2016-03-09 Thread Linda Greethurst
Hello Anne,
Yes, I can do the search for #1 tags and look at ALL their locations. I
want the shortcut of being able to just see for example those #1 people and
the locations in just one state like Maryland. The biggest puzzle as I
work with this is how to print out a list of just the tagged locations,

I'm just looking for a shortcut that I don't think is there. I want to
have just those few #1 tagged people who were in just those few tagged
locations in Maryland

The ultimate goal is to have that special little list and then it woud be
so much easier to edit the sources for just those few people at a time. I
want to get uniformity in those sources - especially for the direct line.
I've been using Legacy since version 3 - waaay before source writer. I'm
not ready to redo everyone of my sources into Source Writer. But I can get
them uniform in these small groups without being so overwhelmed.

But again, thanks for the idea - I did try it.

Martha and Cathy,
Thank you for your hints and ideas. I guess I'm just getting lazier and
was hoping that I/we/you could figure out a short cut to show only certain
people out of a long list who were living in only certain places. This
type of list also would have given me a fast overview of how and where

I'm working on Maryland places - have 45 locales but my direct line people
only had BMD and events in 19. And of all the people in my database, only
24 of them had any history in to 19 places. Like I mentioned I am working
to just get the direct line cleaned up first, then the extended family will
get researched in more depth when/if I have the time.

[LegacyUG] Help needed to create a special report

2016-03-08 Thread Linda Greethurst
I have tagged #1 all my direct line ancestors.
I have also tagged all the locations where those #1 tagged ancestors lived
before 1776. (I have those locations in AMERICA instead of USA--more clean
up needed there too.)

Now I want a report that would combine those tagged people to the tagged
places. I would like it to read like this:

tagged place direct ancestor be nice to have event desc.
here
   direct ancestor
tagged place direct ancestor
tagged place direct ancestor
   direct ancestor, etc.

Then when I go to the library and I want to concentrate on those direct
ancestors who lived in ie. just early Maryland.

Right now I just want to get my direct line cleaned up,blanks filled in and
everything verified without the distractions of the extended family.

I don't see where I can create a sort of just tagged locations and then add
to that sort just the #1 tagged individuals. I must be missing something.
Would appreciate all ideas and suggestions.

Re: [LegacyUG] Legacy Individual's Information Window Issue

2012-04-02 Thread Linda Greethurst
Yes, I have had this situation for some time too. It is not constant
problem - perhaps every 20 records or so - I haven't kept track. Been
happening for a couple of years.

I don't know if anyone answered you, but I find the same thing. Just
figured it was a bug not worth worrying about.

I have a question about data entry in the Individual's Information
window and wondering if anyone else is seeing this?

I noticed some time ago that when I added a new person and attempted to
click on the + button to add a note or address for such things as the
Born, Died, or Buried entries, that the button did not react. That is, a
sub menu did not open to allow me to enter notes or info. It just ignored
my mouse click on the +.

But if I saved the new individual, then reopened the individual's
window, the + buttons would work properly.

As a fairly new user, I thought maybe it was programmed this way for
some odd reason, although frustrating. At a Legacy users meeting yesterday
I found that no one else had noticed the issue.

In fact one of the users tried the example with no problem. I don't know
what operating system the user had.

I have the program loaded on a couple of computers and have separate
family files loaded, but have the same problem on each.

I've even taken the step of doing a new install on another computer
never used with Legacy with the original 7.5 disk. I can duplicate the same
issue with the little sample family file included. Straight forward install
 with no options changed.

These are all XP systems, current with all patches. Avg antivirus
 software disabled in the tests.
  Legacy Deluxe software version: 7.5.0.112

Re: [LegacyUG] Legacy Web Pages Passage Express

2011-11-18 Thread Linda Greethurst
If you go to Passages Express web site, click on the support tab, scroll
down to view Tutorials, there are 18 tutorials to view. Give those a try
for using the program.
Just an idea, but don't know if it will help for Windows 7 however.

During the QA in this week's Webinar, Geoff discussed Legacy's feature of
creating web pages and asked Jeff Shupe if it were possible to view these
in Passage Express. Jeff explained it was possible if you right-clicked on
a folder and disabled the automatic folder indexing. Could someone
explain this to me? I'm using Windows 7 and when I right click on the
folder in Windows Explorer where my htm files are stored, I don't see the
 automatic folder indexing option.
