Re: [LegacyUG] Cemeteries

2018-09-16 Thread Susie Zada
Hi Jean,

Cathy gave you a good link to achieve what you're trying to do.

Hopefully you've entered cemeteries using one of those methods.

If not, explain to us how you've entered the cemeteries.

It can also be a good opportunity to tidy up your entries for cemeteries.

Hope that helps.

Re: [LegacyUG] MyHeritage - not free

2018-02-16 Thread Susie Zada
I find it interesting that the majority of complaints are directed towards
MyHeritage and not Ancestry, FindMyPast etc. who all use the same business
practices and who also share information we provide to them (i.e. our own
family trees).

Well I for one WANT them to share my information - that's how I have made
contact with other researchers. As a resident of Australia, I get a tad snitchy
with the US-Centric sites that are pretty much useless for the majority of
Australian research.

BUT I have had huge success with my German records on MyHeritage, and also the
huge number of smaller country newspapers (NSW, Australia) - these smaller
local newspapers have wonderful information on local people that is not
available through other resouces (TROVE / National Library Australia). I've
lost count of the number of personal articles I have for my family thanks to
MyHeritage. If you don't want to expand your own family history research, then
don't subscribe to ANY of the major subscription sites then you won't have
anything to complain about.

Oh - apart from the records and newspaper articles I have found on MyHeritage I
have had some terrific DNA matches on MyHeritage - moreso than the other
companies! One great thing with DNA Matches - you know the other people at
least have some interest in family history if they've bothered to pay for DNA
tests!

I won't apologise for being a fan of MyHeritage - and as all the major subs
companies do the same, I don't get caught out paying for something I don't want
- I read the fine print!

Re: [LegacyUG] MyHeritage - not free

2018-02-16 Thread Susie Zada
Hi Pauline,

You're talking about two totally different things - subscription to MyHeritage
data etc. and FREE to upload DNA data from other companies if you're not a
subscriber.

It sounds like you were using MyHeritage Online to add to your tree and haven't
been using the MyHeritage Family Tree Builder which is the FREE genealogy
program you can run on your desktop and sync to your online tree if you have
one there.

So people recently talking about FREE MyHeritage are all referring to uploading
their Ancestry DNA and FTDNA results to MyHeritage.- particularly since
MyHeritage have upgraded their algorithms and people are getting heaps more
accurate matches than previously! I can personally vouch for that with some
excellent matches in the last few weeks.

Hope that explanation helps.

have a tree up to 250 people."

Sorry. Be wary of anything "free" from MyHeritage. My husband and I
first did autosomal testing with 23andMe in about 2013. They also had a crude
tool for entering family tree history. I detested the clunky format and did not
enter much data on it. Later, 23andMe informed us they were no longer going to
support family tree data, and they had sent our DNA and family tree data to
MyHeritage. That was in February of 2014. I had previously opened an account on
WorldVitalRecords, and in February 2014, MyHeritage informed me that
WorldVitalRecords had been merged with MyHeritage, so in February 2014,
MyHeritage said they had given us "a free empty MyHeritage account for one
year, which is a gift worth $119, for free, and we would have access to World
Vital Records and My Heritage both. The Premium Plus account will not renew
automatically. By creating your family tree on our site, you will automatically
receive your matches for free. "

In February 2015, email from MyHeritage thanked me for purchasing an
annual bundle of data subscription plus PremiumPlus family site. You have been
charged US $99.95 ...We have upgraded our existing family site Cramer Family
Site to PremiumPlus. I had to request a new password, because I had not been
using it and had not recorded the password. The next day, they sent another
email starting with "An error occurred while renewing your MyHeritage Data
Subscription. It was not possible to extend your subscription and it expired. "
They offered a MyHeritage Data subscription that will cots US $71.40 for one
year, instead of the usual $119.40. About two weeks later I requested a new
password again and tried entering data again, but did not like the user
interface. Again in Feb 2015, I requested a new password. So I remember I put a
few photos on the tree, but I really did not like the data entry format. That
was about the last time I remember even looking at the MyHeritage website,
until I started noticing funny little orange icons turning up on my Legacy
Family Tree on my desktop computer.

Apparently my desktop computer was getting messages from MyHeritage
asking me to verify something someone else had entered on their trees, and
smart matches found my entries, which I found very annoying, since whenever I
saw these messages, my mind was always focused on something else far away. I
have been a subscriber to Ancestry.com for many years, and I have been focusing
on AncestryDNA and growing my trees on Ancestry.com and on my Legacy Family
Tree file, and looking for my 1000+ living cousins on AncestryDNA, and how I am
connected to them, and also on FTDNA and 23andMe. And I had no interest in
working on the old trees on MyHeritage. And I never considered buying DNA
analysis from My Heritage. But I noticed people on the Legacy Family Tree user
group talking about My Heritage DNA testing.

Unfortunately, a few days ago, Februrary 2018, I noticed an email from
MyHeritage saying I was charged $250.74. This shocked me because I thought my
subscription had expired. I asked my husband to check charges. He had just paid
it that morning. He also found we had paid $238.80 in 2016, etc.. Which was
another shocker. He immediately sent an email cancelling the 2018 payment he
had just made. It took a couple of years to look at 5 years of paper trail. We
appear to have have charged over $750 for something I did not ask for in the
first place and did not like when I attempted to use it. I have been using
Legacy Family Tree for over 15 years, since 2002, but, if Legacy Family Tree is
now owned by My Heritage, my first impulse is just to give up on genealogy.

Re: [LegacyUG] Legacy 8 - date change after latest update

2017-09-28 Thread Susie Zada
Hi Folks,

As many of my BDM references are in New South Wales or Victoria in
Australia, unless I have purchased the certificate or have other reliable
references I am restricted to the indexes. For those states, only a year of
registration is given. Unless you are able to interpret the registration
numbers with absolute certainty it is possible that the person was born in
the year before registration (i.e. late December).

ABOUT / Abt
For those situations from the BDM indexes, I use About / Abt because it is
confirmed and generally within one year of the registration. (a bit like
the English quarters - registered at the beginning of a quarter but born the
previous quarter which could be the previous year for the first quarter).

CALCULATED / Calc
For years of birth based on age at marriage, death or age on other siblings'
birth certificates, or other reliable sources, I use calculations and as we
all know they can vary greatly. e.g. if it's an age on emigration /
passenger lists, the person / family may have applied one or more years
before the event.

ESTIMATED / Est
Where there are NO reference years I will do an estimate based on 25 +/-
years and take into account the birth of the siblings - e.g. is this the
first child, seventh child etc. Based on this I would ESTIMATE that the
parents were born 25 +/- years before the birth of the first child to give
at least one reference point.

PUBLISHING
When I have 'published' a printed family history for family members (updated
every couple of years) I include my decision of using Abt / Calc / Est in
the introduction to make it clear to all. I'm now looking at including that
somewhere on my family trees on the web.

WARNING
If you have an Est date - i.e. Born: Est 1828 - if anyone copies your data
and puts it on Ancestry, that conglomerate gets VERY 'Helpful' by hinting
that the person in question was born in ESTONIA! And before you know it,
your direct gg-grandfather came from Estonia ... grrr

I suppose I could call those calculated dates but since I only use a year in
those kind of calculations I prefer about 1834 instead of Calc 1834. I
reserve Calc for dates when I can figure out the day month and year.

Hi Folks,

fly off at ignorant statements.

It is very sad to see some of the mis-information followed by unwarranted

happy user of both and yes they all have their faults but firstly you can't
blame either for incorrect data on the trees on their sites. You should be
aiming your anger at the poor research done by some people - but hey, is
there ANYONE who hasn't made a mistake on their tree on this list? BE
HONEST!

READ exactly how the hints and matching work - NO-ONE has stolen your data.

And I know this statement might upset a lot of people but this IS a fact - I
joined MyHeritage and have had some wonderful assistance with their various
matches and suggestions because there are so many non-Americans involved -
in other words it's not USA-centric! And don't start arguing about that or
denying that as an issue - go back and look at how many messages comment on
the LFT location 'rules' don't fit the rest of the world.

I love Legacy and still use it.

I love My Heritage and definitely use it. I have made more progress with
hints in recent times from My Heritage than any other research I've done.

A very happy customer of both!

Your Legacy files are protected by not uploading them to the web!

Millenium don’t have your data, neither do Ancestry, Findmypast, Family Search,
or MyHeritage UNLESS you have given it to them!

If you decide to upload your data, learn how to protect it FIRST not AFTER
you’ve uploaded it!

Re: [LegacyUG] Graphics being posted to the list

2017-05-08 Thread Susie Zada
In this 'recent' discussion about graphics, Gene is the first to point out
the issue of bandwidth and/or download limits.

People need to remember that Legacy is an international product AND there
are users all around the world - many don't have access to unlimited
reasonably access! And I'm speaking from experience here - living in
country Victoria in Australia.

Think of others.

No-one would dispute the value of images when explaining things but I would
dispute the value of open-slather on this list. If you want why not put
your images on the Legacy Facebook page and include a link to, but don't
exclude the rest of the users from this list!

Is it possible to get a virus from an embedded image? I don't know the
answer to that, but I know a lot of forums allow that, so I doubt it's a
problem. Who would like to have a vote? If that's acceptable, count me in
for allowing it. If not, I'll abide by the rules.

embedded images are sent with the email as attachments, so yes, they can
easily send viruses. Some people have limited bandwidth due to various
reasons; financial, locality & availability of cable service. It is not
fair to hammer their limited access. It is a simple matter to post your
image to a reputable hosting site and post the link. Every body benefits
and no one suffers.

I can't help you more.

If you really have gone back to Options - Customise 5.7 and changed the display

Options-Customise and then done a File - File Maintenance - Check/Repair
and then still you have only Abt on the screen but differences in reports,

So they're not all About. Some are recorded as Circa.
The bracketed dates in reports are not taking notice of what you've

This is a good question but the answer is absolutely not. These LUG messages
are text only and when compared to the amount of audio and video streaming
on the Internet, the text messages probably comprise less than .001% of the
available bandwidth.

(The .001% is purely a guess but based on knowledge of bandwidth
saturations; Google it if you want a more definitive number.)

You can Print from the Name List.
You can choose to include the fields you want in that report.

I use it mainly to print a Search List to csv so you can sort in a

Susie,
For a one-name study, if you haven't discovered the Name List Print to

If you are using Excel as your Spreadsheet program, because it doesn't
recognise dates before 1901, it's a good idea to change your date
setting before you export to -MM-DD at Options - Customise 5.1 so
a text sort on the date column sorts them in date order.

The Individual Report can be found by selecting CHART REPORTS.

I just experimented and was rather pleased with the result – and I don’t have
the biggest system and run Windows 7 with the latest Legacy Deluxe.

Individual Report:

Selected ALL options except Chronological Report.

Included images everywhere including event images – for example I have one with
more than 50 events and more than 40 with images!

I have a PDF Printer installed so I PRINTED to that printer.

14 minutes from start to finish.

29355 Individuals

9617 Families

322 Sources

Result 30,973 pages

Name Index: pp. 30178-30973

Source citations: 26950 pp. 29444-30177

Individual Reports: pp. 1-29443

Playing with this has given me ideas on how to use it for my “one place study”
– previously I used to extract via GEDCOM to another program then spend days
modifying and keeping my fingers crossed. This may be a better solution!

Hope that helps someone.

TO EVERYONE PLEASE READ THIS!!!

While most of us have simply been deleting all of the "bogus" messages we
have been receiving, there is a quick fix for getting your account setup
again the way you want it. Just go to the Legacy User Group List manager
webpage. Link is below:

*
http://legacyusers.com/mailman/listinfo/legacyusergroup_legacyusers.com

Once there, if you don't see the Log in with a box for your email in it,
click on the "Log in" button and enter only your email address and then
click on the Log in button again. You'll get an error message at the top of
the page but don't worry about it. Then, click on the Password Reminder
button that is down the page a ways. You will probably get another error
message but again, don't worry about it. A short while late you should see
your password reminder message in your email with your "NEW" password. Go
back to the Legacy User Group list webpage and then log in with the password
that was in your email. That will get you back to where you can then change
your password and adjust your list settings to whatever you want them to be.
Mine had not changed so it appears only the password was changed with the
move to the new server.

Good luck,

Don

We have had to migrate our old mailing lists to a new server and software.
As part of that migration all users had to be resubscribed to the "New"
List. Everyone on the List will receive a welcome message.

The new list server and software requires a password for you to manage your
list subscription. A default password is included in your welcome message
along with the link to your new list account management page where you can
select list options.

Subject: [LegacyUG] Fw: Latest Build Issues

Never mind - I found the form to Report Issues.
___

So no one has had the below issue after the latest build? Sorry, I just
noticed that I referred to the symbol that has replaced the periods in Reports
as 2 horizontal lines – not sure where my head was, but it should be
2 VERTICAL lines. I just did a google search and it is called a vertical broken
bar (or double vertical broken bar in my situation). I have since noticed that
this only happens to Events in Reports. Even if I go and delete the event and
re-enter a new event with the same wording, the vertical broken bar shows up in
the same place when I run a Report. For example, the abbreviation St. --
anywhere that I have referred to St. Paul's Cathedral, or St. John, the period
is removed and the broken bar symbol is in it's place. If I go to the event
and delete the period, the Report looks fine.
If I go back and add the period, the broken bar symbol is back in the Report.
The broken bar symbol is also replacing periods between sentences.
How do I report this to Legacy? Thanks for your help. Laurel
__

I just downloaded version 8.0.0.467 and have come across the following after
the update: 1) Additional spaces between words were added to my transcribed
sources under the Text of Source screen in Master Sources. About 25% of my
sources were affected. The extra spaces were just random – anywhere from an
additional one to 5 spaces between words. (Eg: a BronzeMemorial has
beeninstalled). I was able to go in and delete all these added spaces –
it was just time consuming to have to do so. 2) Anything that was bolded was
particularly affected - there were extra spaces before and after many bolded
words. But after removing the extra spacing around bolded words and saving,
the extra spacing would come back. I actually had to change the words from bold
to normal to be able to remove the extra spaces. If I tried to rebold the word
afterwards, the extra spacing would come back. 3) In reports – Indiv.,
Family, Ancestor Desc., in random places the period and any spaces around the
period, have been replaced by 2 horizontal lines.
(Eg: Married in the Anglican Church of St||Paul’s||Witnesses were
Sally). The horizontal lines have a break in the middle, but I don’t
have the symbol on my keyboard to show you. I have ran a Check/Repair, Compact
File and booted my computer, but these issues are still there. I can live
without the bolded words, but the reports don’t look too pretty with the
missing spaces and || in place of periods. Is anyone else noticing this?
Laurel

RE: [LegacyUG] Problem With Descendant Book Report

2015-02-17 Thread Susie Zada
Hi Tom,

Not the same report but similar problem a few weeks ago [Legacy 8.0.0.459
Deluxe]. I thought I was going nuts as the new events were there where I added
them but only the old events were appearing in the report and not the additions.

I was copying and pasting these events - only minor changes each time [year
etc]. I obviously unintentionally clicked on the PRIVATE box and was then
copying this setting through all the new entries. Once un-clicked, they all
appeared as they should.

Check that your problem doesn't have anything to do with Privacy options -
either for people, events, entries, or reports.

I just tried both the Hourglass Chart and the Bow Tie Chart – no problems – you

i.e. you start with the central couple in the standard view then select Legacy

When you go to the Individual Information page that allows you to update the

the Medical Tab where you enter Cause of Death.

females on the chart.

Continuation pages - same as for first page - No 1 person has sources
regardless if they are Male or Female, then rest of entries on the page,
sources for all males and none for females.

Any suggestions?

RE: [LegacyUG] Pedigree Chart sources

2013-12-16 Thread Susie Zada
Hello Brian,

I'm haven't focussed on what appears in the list of sources [endnotes] but the
fact that there are no source reference numbers beside birth or death
information for any females except if they are the starting person and then
only on the starting person.

All males have source references numbers for birth, marriage and death.

I have run Check / Repair and also Compact Family File.

I have RESET all reports.

I have closed down Legacy.

I have closed down my PC.

I have opened and converted different family files.

I have tested this with a completely new unconnected family added to the
database since the upgrade to Legacy 8.

I have tested this with family that existed prior to upgrade to Legacy 8 with
no changes to any of the individuals.

And yes, I have checked that the females all have sources for basic birth and
death information.

The results are still the same - NO sources showing for females but for the one
exception mentioned above. By the way I have also done Reports / Pedigree
Chart with males as the starting person - the norm for the ones I wanted.

My initial request - what setting am I missing or what am I doing wrong - I can
repeat the above again and again and again. I can see it in Preview, on
printed report, and on report saved to PDF - all the same.

So can someone please tell me what I'm doing wrong?

[LegacyUG] Family Group Sheet error

2013-12-16 Thread Susie Zada
Hi Folks,

Another problem which has been reported ...

If you use the List Style formatting for your events, the first person
appearing after the first page will have events that have retained the
Description, Date and Place of the last event for the previous person and
keep repeating those details for every event in the rest of the report!

If you change to Event Sentence Formatting the problem disappears.

One of those errors that isn't obvious unless you're really studying the
report but very disconcerting when you realise that it is actually printing
incorrect data for individuals.

[LegacyUG] Well done Legacy Sales and Customer Service

2013-12-06 Thread Susie Zada
Hi Folks,

Almost a week ago I paid for my upgrade from Legacy 7 to Legacy 8 and I
messed up big time - was trying to do it while I was at work and I got every
email address WRONG. I was not surprised I didn't get my customer number
etc and decided I'd wait until I had time at home to follow it up properly.

Home is in Ocean Grove, Victoria, Australia.

I sent a new email this morning [Saturday morning, Australian time] and
within minutes of hitting send the phone rang. It was Kenny from Customer
Service - obviously in the USA. Friendly, polite AND understanding - he
gave me my new customer number over the phone AND sent copies via email to
make sure I could download the new version and get up and running.

Now that's what I call Customer Service.

Congratulations and Thank You to Legacy / Millennia.

Regards .. Susie Zada

[LegacyUG] Problem with Family Group Record report

2013-03-09 Thread Susie Zada
Hi Folks,

Is this a known problem - any suggestions?

When printing or previewing a Family Group Record report, on second or
subsequent pages, if the page starts with a child, the line that has a grey
background in the first box and usually contains child number, sex and name
is grey but no text in the line. The contents text [number, sex and name]
appear near the bottom of the same page.

The second problem / change - if the husband [1st person] has a photo, the
details for that person [born etc.] do not start printing until the bottom
of the photo leaving a big blank space in the report.

I'm using Version 7.5.0.219

I don't know when these problem appeared - you need the right number of
children and circumstances for this to happen.

Another copy of this report for a different family has the grey box at the
top of the page, the child number on the next page, the child sex on the
next page and the child name on yet another page, then no heading / details
at the top of the next page but the rest of the report continuing normally
about 1/4 of the way down the page.

I have plenty of correct examples saved as .pdf files.

The same results occur in preview, print or .pdf forms.

I use A4 paper and have not changed any printer settings etc.

I have RESET and redone my options to no avail.

I have RESET and redone options one at a time and the problems appear as
follows: if I include:
Events for children
Photos for children
Event List style

So far OK

Include Event photos - problem with first photo and blank space but children
OK

As soon as I add events for husband and wife the children go wrong - as
detailed above.

As asked at the beginning - is this a known problem or any other
suggestions?

Regards ... Susie Z

RE: [LegacyUG] Genviewer_please help!

2012-02-18 Thread Susie Zada
Hi Darlene,

For GenViewer to go http://www.mudcreeksoftware.com/downloading_genviewer.htm
and click on the link in option 1) [mudgv123.exe]. Save to your hard drive,
then instal - you will be asked for your lines of code to copy and paste.

For GenMatcher go to http://www.mudcreeksoftware.com/genmatcher.htm and click
on the DOWNLOAD link in the box on the right. Save to your hard drive, then
instal - you will be asked for your lines of code to copy and paste.

Both of the above links are found by clicking on the Downloads menu.

Please Help!
I bought both GenViewer and Genmatcher. I waited for the e-mails of
confirmation and got my special code number for each. I looked for a download
to click on, but found none. I went back in to the website at Mudcreek Sales
but can not download it without buying it again. I looked for a place to put
in the code exactly as they had sent it to me, but found none, and also no
apply button. Help! I bought it, but how do I download it without paying all
over again?

Thanks for any and all help in advance!

[LegacyUG] Family Group Report and Event Pictures problem

2011-12-03 Thread Susie Zada
Hi Folks,

Am I missing something or is this a bug and if so is it a known / reported
one?

Select Report / Family Group / Report Options / Include / Event pictures

Regardless of how many times I save the settings and/or load them, the Event
pictures won't stick.

Event pictures option ALSO appears under the Pictures tab as well as the
Include tab.

If Event pictures is NOT selected in the Include option, the Pictures option
shows Event pictures greyed out and blank check box
If Event pictures IS selected in the Include option, the Pictures options
shows Event pictures greyed out and a tick in the check box

The ONLY way Event pictures are included in the report is for Event pictures
to be selected in the Include option

If you print a report then select another one, the Event pictures selection
doesn't stick and the next report does not include them - EVEN if you don't
close the Select a Report box.

Any suggestions? It's driving me nuts trying to remember to select it EVERY
time I want to do a report.

Regards .. Susie Z

[LegacyUG] Family Group Record missing dates locations - a known problem?

2011-10-31 Thread Susie Zada
Hi Folks,

I have Legacy Deluxe 7.5.0.112 running on Windows XP

I have recently noticed a problem when producing the Family Group Record
report ...

I have my options set to use Event Format = Use List Style formatting.

If I Preview, Print [to printer] or Print to pdf a number of Events don't
show the Date or Location fields / data.

I have 27 events for George FUSSEN, 11 events for Mary McNEIFF [his wife],
and 3 events for their marriage.

The first 5 events for George are OK, the next 5 are missing Date Location
[there is no field divider for these ones], number 11 is OK, 12-18 no date
or location, 19 is OK, 20 21 not, 22 is OK, 23-27 not.

For Mary 1-7 are OK, 8-11 are not.

For their marriage all 3 events are OK.

Testing what does and doesn't work - if I create the Family Group Record as
Text or Html all data appears OK.

If I create a web site for my database, all data is OK - see ...

http://www.zades.com.au/susiez/family/7.htm

If I change the Event Format to Use event sentence formatting and number
each event or use bullet points all data appears OK. Interestingly if I
change it back to Use List Style formatting the list style includes either
numbers or bullet points [hangover from event sentence formatting option.
To clear these I need to select event sentence formatting and no numbers
or bullets then change it back to use list style formatting to clear the
bullets or numbers.

I don't want to use the sentence formatting - definitely the list style but
it's useless without the dates and locations.

I have reports produced previously where this was not a problem. At a best
guess I think it was fine with version 6 and has changed more recently.

I also have this problem in a separate database created in version 6.

Note: sources are BASIC and not SOURCEWRITE - shouldn't make a different but
who knows?

Any suggestions?

Regards . Susie Zada

Hi Jenny,

Glad you can reproduce the error. I've searched the archives and can't find a
similar problem discussed.

I've submitted an Error Report in the meantime.

If you find any common factors, let me know!

RE: [LegacyUG] Family Group Record missing dates locations - a known problem?

2011-10-31 Thread Susie Zada
Hi Brian,

Do you mean if the full event listing [Event name, description, date
location] doesn't print on a single line in list mode then the following events
won't print date location?

Mine appear to follow that pattern - in fact after this first occurs it takes
an event that DOES have the description on the second line for the date
location to print again and then of course the following one doesn't.

Can you tell me what version this started happening in?

We have a problem in our tracking system on this. If the description
line for an event carries over to a following line then the events which
follow that carry-over are missing the date and locations.

Look at your problem reports and see if they are the same. If they are
different please submit a problem report, with a sample PDF report attached.

I can confirm this. I just tried FGRs for 2 members of my family. On
the first one the Preview showed all Events fine except for one for
Address (which was the 7th of 12 Events) where the Date and Location
fields were missing (Desc and Notes not used.) With the 2nd FGR there
were quite a few Census Events and with some of these the Date was
pushed onto a lower line and overwritten by the Desc line. HTML was fine.

I think it might be something to do with the Desc line - whether or not
the Event has a Desc and if so how long it is, but I need to test
 further to check this out.
