Re: [LegacyUG] email issue

2016-06-23 Thread marion wimsett
At long last I have had two. Although the original heading shows it coming
from Legacy you have to look at the details of the headers and you will
find that the actual address it Is coming from is not that of Legacy. I
have now put a block on that email address so any further emails will
automatically be deleted (mine were directed to the S*p*am* box so is
wasn't a problem anyway.)
As Brian and Sherry are constantly trying to tell everyone, in is NOT
coming from a Legacy address, they are just making it look like that - go
in and check the header details and you will find the original poster
address. (If you don't know how to do that Google it!)

Re: [LegacyUG] email issue

2016-06-23 Thread Jodi
I had this same problem, am not having it now, what I did was, I deleted all I
could, and then put the rest in my spam folder.  I downloaded a free malware
program called malwarebytes and I ran the program.  IT found malware which it
quarantined and deleted.  I then went back and I finished off the rest of the
e-mails, and then I did a virus scan.  There were no viruses in my computer.  I
then emptied my spam folder and I have gotten nothing since.

I have no clue. But my load from the list since yesterday was not that heavy. I
was just pointing out that you added another email to the load. This list does
seem to be a challenge at times.

Re: [LegacyUG] email issue

2016-06-22 Thread Jodi
I had the same problem I did what Steve Hayes said I put a block on the
reply-to-address and put the e-mail in my spam.  I have nothing today.  I had
one time 1009 e-mails with the same problem, then I cleared those out, and got
908 more, cleared those out, and some e-mails I needed for medical issues
popped up then I got spammed with 800 more!  I was ready to just block the
whole thing but called my computer guy and he told me to do what I did.  Hope
it works for you.

I have managed to get "folders" into my Gmail.

I manage my emails using Mozilla Thunderbird and the folders that are
created there using filters are reflected in my online Gmail account and
thus allow my emails to also synch between my desktop and my laptop.

Also under Settings, there's a link at the top called Filters (next to Accounts
and Import) where you can set up filters.

As mentioned below, you get to Settings by clicking on the Cog.

Yes, on the upper right is a Cog with an arrow, this is your settings button
click on it and click configure inbox. Actually you can also set a list to be
important mail so you can ignore it and then click on starred and read it when
you get the time.

Re: [LegacyUG] email list too much- inbox overload

2014-06-15 Thread Wendy Howard
Gmail doesn't 'do' folders, it has labels.

I have a filter in my Gmail mail box that picks out list mail and
applies a label to it. After I posted in this same thread yesterday, I
spent a little time to update my web page at
http://freepages.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~wendyh65/How-to.htm#RuleFilter
to show how to set such a filter in Gmail, with pictures (screenshots)
to show where to look for things. This filter assumes you read your mail
at Gmail, you can tailor the options if these are not exactly to your needs.

Think about whether you want a filter to apply a label automatically as
the mail comes in, or not. Looking at the options (you can see them in
the screenshot at #7 for Gmail at my page above) it is possible to set
this criteria if you want - but I've never tried that, and you may not
want all such emails labelled.

If it's something you want to do on-the-fly as you read your mail at
Gmail, it's very simple. If you've got the email open, look for the icon
near the top of the screen that looks a bit like a luggage tag - hover
over it and "Labels" appears as helpful text. Click on that, then select
the label you want to apply, or click on "Create new" and create a new
label as you work.

If you don't already have the email open, but can see it in the list on
the screen, check the box to the left of it, then select the label to
apply (the luggage-tag icon will appear once you've checked one email).
You can set a label to several emails at the same time if you want -
just keep checking them before going to the Label icon.

Then when you want to go to just these labelled emails, click on the
label name down the left-hand side of your screen (I'm assuming you're
using a computer, not a tablet or phone, which will be arranged somewhat
differently, and may not have all the options available), and the emails
with that label will appear on your screen.

I have a few emails in my mail box, for a variety of things, that I want
to be able to locate quickly when I need them. Instead of using a label,
I 'star' them by clicking on the star that's next to the Reply icon when
the email is open. Or you can click on the star next to the email when
you're looking at the list. When I want to see the starred emails, I
click on "Starred" below Inbox at the top left of the screen, and there
they are. You may need to manage your labels to make this show if it's
not visible and you want to use it. It's essentially another label, with
a special position in the hierarchy.

Lastly, if you don't want to do any of this, the searching power at
Gmail is excellent. Click on the little down-arrow in the search field
at the top of the screen (next to the blue search icon) to bring up the
search options. You can search for mail that has an attachment, and
specify the size to look for (greater or less than a figure of your
choosing). Add that to other search terms, and it should take you
seconds to locate that one email amongst thousands.

Hope this helps. :-)

I use filters for a lot of lists I belong to and it does prevent the inbox from
getting overloaded.

If you're using an outdated version of Outlook like I am (2007), you go to
"Tools" then "Rules and Alerts" on the menu bar. From there you can create a
rule to specify what folder to send the emails to. I don't know if it's
changed much in later versions of Outlook.

Like was mentioned, if you don't check that folder frequently you may be
responding to an old thread that has been answered.

If you're concerned about the incoming mail clogging your mail box, there are
ways to manage the mail so that it is out of the way until such time as you're
ready to read it. Create a filter to identify the list mail (by the address for
the list, legacyusergroup@LegacyUsers.com) and divert that mail to its own
folder. Now it is out of the Inbox, and safely waiting until you're ready to
read it.

Don't know how to set a filter in your mail box? Check your service's help
and/or look at the instructions I put on my personal web site -
http://freepages.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~wendyh65/How-to.htm#RuleFilter  I
wrote these years ago so some things may have changed, but you should be able
to work it out for whatever service/program you're using.

If this mailing list was changed to a message board (what you're calling a
'forum'), it would loose me pretty quickly. Not a fan of them, never have been.
But that's just me and I accept that not everyone thinks the way I do. ;-)

Hope this helps. :-)

Since too many people historically haven't had a clue how to
do more than surf and/or read-reply email, this might be a
non-starter.

What Elizabeth sends is going to depend on what the other
end can handle. HTML is probably a better bet, but no
guarantee there either. Otherwise, do the export, and
create some sort of book, and attach it.

I get this type of request for data very often.  It is a easy to recommend that
your contact first install the free version of Legacy if they don't already
have it and then send them the backup zip files from the exported tagged set
that others have described.  Your contact will be able to produce any reports
and update the data.  Those that have taken this sequence are much happier than
those that simply got a printed chart or report and most of them have upgraded
to Legacy Deluxe once they realized the capabilities of the program.  Best of
all, they tend to send data back to provide updates for information we hold in
common.  Legacy really is a great collaboration tool.

Re: [LegacyUG] email tagged individuals?

2014-04-15 Thread Wendy Howard
Hi Elizabeth,

If you have tagged everyone you want to share, export those tagged
people to a new file (in v8 it's File > Export, then select the file
type you want, give it a name, select the criteria for the export ie
those with the tag you used...)

Now you have a file that contains ONLY the individuals you want to share
with someone else.

Run a report, create a GEDCOM file, send the .fdb file, whatever takes
your fancy, from this new file, leaving your original database
untouched, and protecting the untagged individuals that you don't want
to share.

Hope this helps. :-)

That's for you to do. Unregister the old address and then go through the agonies
of trying to register the new address (easy) and get the list to start sending

It is the Legacy mail server. It cannot handle certain characters or
incorrectly formatted mail. The servers have always been that way and
will probably not change. People have been complaining about it for years.

RE: [LegacyUG] Email with Symbols

2012-10-27 Thread CE WOOD

I subscribe to many lists such as this, but this is the ONLY list where this
problem occurs. NONE of the other emails I receive from anywhere in the world
have this problem. This occurs only with this Legacy list. As mentioned many
times before, there are many problems with the company that Legacy deems worthy
to host its list. This is merely another one.

I've always been puzzled by the strange characters too.
I *almost* never get them on personal emails and I exchange emails a lot within

My email is set up to both send and receive in Unicode UTF-8 using Outlook 2007

However...
I subscribe to a number of list-servs ... I don't have that problem with most,

I've never figured it out and just resigned to accept it. I've passively

I checked out the encoding on Pat Hickin's original post, and it was indeed
UTF-8. It appeared fine (no weird characters) in Outlook 2007, so I guess my
reader handles UTF-8.

Despite that, like Ron, I still get the weird characters. For me, it appears
that it is in the original text quoted in replies where the person replying had
a newsreader that mangled the character set. I.E. once mangled, that text will
continue to be mangled on all future replies to the group quoting it.

Your email client (I use Thunderbird) should have an option for
character encoding. Mine is set to:
Outgoing Mail: Western (ISO-8859-1)
Incoming Mail: Unicode (UTF-8)

This correctly translates and displays the characters correctly.

Western (ISO-8859-1) appears to be understood correctly by all mail
readers and the Unicode (UTF-8) appears to understand both, so far.

Oh look! Pat Hicklin's original message contains these headers:-

Content-Type: text/plain;
charset="utf-8"
Content-Transfer-Encoding: quoted-printable

And here's the first line of text:-

As a matter of curiosity, can someone tell me what =E2=80=9CSource List Nam=
e=E2=80=9D you
would give for the citation for the event described?

Or, the HTML version in the same message:-

Content-Type: text/html;
charset="utf-8"
Content-Transfer-Encoding: quoted-printable

As a matter of curiosity, can someone tell me what =E2=80=9CSource Lis=
t Name=E2=80=9D you would give for the citation for the event described?Event: Medical.=E2=80=9C At a Court held =

Your 'weird' characters are in fact, strange versions of double quotes. When I
quote Pat's message you'll see this

> give for the citation for the event described?

They are artificial characters added by your email reader because it
does not have the correct symbol for that contained in the incoming
email. This is usually caused by differences in the character set the
user used in their email and the character sets installed on your computer.

I don't think it matters what the Event is, what is important is that
YOU can find the Source in your list by remembering what Source List
Name you gave it. So, if you think of that Source what are the first
words you think of to describe it? Will Books? William & Mary College
Quarterly? Give the Source a name which is meaningful to you and the
chances are you will remember it.

[LegacyUG] Email Security

2011-04-25 Thread Joshua Crump
This post is off topic but I think it is needed. I have noticed that
some people's email accounts that used this group have been hacked and
some have got them back and others have been taken off the list. My
background is Networking Technology and Information Systems Security. I
use Legacy for genealogy hobby. I know that remembering secure and
complex passwords can be hard so that is why I use a program called
Lastpass (http://www.lastpass.com) to manage all of my passwords. The
way the program works is it installs in your web browser and you setup a
username and a secure password and the program will save and generate
secure passwords for all of your internet accounts. You only have to
remember the master account password. The video on the Lastpass site
will explain it better then I did.

Thanks,
Josh

Hello everyone. Is there any way to set up separate contact information

RE: [LegacyUG] email correspondence - how to record

2011-01-04 Thread Jennifer Crockett
Glad to have been of help, Kathy.

Another thing I so, as I don't always like the way Legacy does word wrap, is
save the email as .txt file (to my Desktop temporarily). Opened in Notepad++ I
then select each paragraph, one at a time and hit CRL+J to wrap them. After
that I copy and paste into the source text.

Thanks for the great detail! If I'm understanding this correctly, you would
create a separate Source for each individual email that I receive and use the
clipboard to add that source to all of the appropriate
individuals/events/fields that are mentioned. I share your thoughts about disk
space being cheap and I also really like having the full text available to me;
sometimes the details surrounding the actual data (birthdate for instance) give
us some perspective. My only concern with that is how that would be handled in
reports & books; I haven't gotten that far yet but it is my goal to prepare
individual books for various family lines to give to those other descendants.

[LegacyUG] email correspondence - how to record

2011-01-04 Thread Kathy Meyer
I am fortunate enough to have a fellow genealogist that enjoys helping with
lookups (even when I don't ask for them!) She's amazing.

I have several emails from her referencing her 'finds' about my family.
Sometimes they are from a CD that she has purchased and sometimes they are
from online subscriptions (Genline). My plan is to go to her references on
Genline and pull up the actual record and keep a digital copy and probably
print it (I know, so old school but I can't help myself; I like to thumb
thru my files sometimes :-)

How should I record those emails? I can look up, verify and record the
Genline sources as 'genline' etc. but what about the email itself? And the
sources that it quotes?

Should I reference the source (genline, Swedish burials CD, dis.se) and then
copy her email into the individual details?
Should I create a source of (Jane Doe research/via email) and copy her email
into individual details?
Should I create a separate source of (Jane Doe research/via email Dec 1
2010) for each individual email?
And then create another source of (genline, dis.se) when I am able to verify
and attach an actual image?

Things to keep in mind: The email correspondence may contain 2-3 separate
references to various sources and covers multiple individuals in that family

Also, I can access some of the records to verify and get actual images but
not all of them; especially the CDs that she bought.
I think she would be willing to send me images if I asked for them; in fact,
her most recent correspondence said that she had printed things out and sent
them to me by snail mail. I do want to create books & reports so I need to
keep that in mind.

What a gem of a genealogy friend, huh? I hope I can return the favor some
day :-) thanks for any direction you can give me. Kathy

[LegacyUG] Email woes comment

2010-07-03 Thread Robert Carneal USA
Everyone, please do not forget there is a site called Legacy.com. It
may say "Legacy" but it has nothing to do with "our" Legacy.
"Legacy.com" is something for obituaries, and sometimes utilized by
funeral homes. At one time, they sent out tons of unwanted email,
and ISPs everywhere were getting complaints. (My old ISP got some
complaints about Legacy.com for while.) I physically had to go to the
ISP's offices, and show them in baby steps, repeatedly, that
Millennia's Legacy, and Legacy.com were not the same. It took several
days to accomplish. They blamed everything under the sun, "we can't
let you have Millennia's email without letting you have Legacy.com,"
"They are the same name, they have to be the same company," "it costs
too much to differentiate between names that specifically." They even
tried blaming ME for two different entities to have "Legacy" in their
name! It took a letter from a lawyer to it corrected. Took less than
five minutes to fix.

Ken worked on my email problem daily- and it has remained fixed
since. My point is as much as Ken works on this, it can happen to be
the fault not on Millennia's end. I agree, though, it is annoying and
maddening not to get the email you want and actually signed up for.

Just to point out "Legacy.com" -might- be a culprit for some of us.

Robert

[LegacyUG] Email Problem

2010-05-14 Thread Bobby Johnson
I received the following message when I attempted to send a suggestion. This
was sent using the hyperlink in the "New
Users Group" news item that reads:

"If you would like to form a group in your area, all you need is one interested
and enthusiastic person to get it going.
Let us know if you'd like help to get going and we can advertise here in Legacy
News."
