Actually it turned out to be exactly the opposite, but you did put me on the
right track (where to look). SATA was set to IDE in the BIOS. I changed it to
AHCI and that solved the problem.

i7-2600, an ASUS motherboard, 8 Gb memory, 1 Tb disk (not yet formatted) and a

in the USB connector, the speakers get power, but I
see nothing in the logs (tail -f /var/log/messages) and get no sound. When I
also connect the 3.5mm to my sound card, the speakers work.
Is it possible that the USB plug is only for power, or do I have a Linux
problem (missing driver or something)?

Actually, I do have several plugins installed, but that still doesn't explain
40% CPU use on an AMD 4200+ dual core. And even stranger is the fact that
killing the process doesn't seem to affect how Firefox runs.
