DMP Availability

2001-02-22 Thread dcross - David Cross

(this is dangerously close to spam, but I know there's a certain amount of
interest here :)

Just spoke to the local distributors about the availability of DMP in
Europe. Here are the bullet points:

* There are currently 100 copies in Europe.
* Another (larger) shipment from Manning ended up in Singapore somehow! They
will return at some point in the next week.
* The large Charing Cross Road bookshops (Foyles, Blackwells, Waterstones)
should all have 3 or 4 copies now.
* Amazon had (we think) 10 copies. Don't know how many they've sold.
* PC Bookshop were one of the unlucky stores whose supply went to Singapore.
Check again in two weeks.
* The person who told the PC Bookshop that it would be in stock in July was
quoting from a very old list (July 2000 was the original planned release
date).
* I will hopefully have copies of DMP and OOP to give away on Monday night.

Cheers,

Dave...
[still posting from Acxiom as the list is still eating mails I send from my
dave.org.uk webmail]

GnuPG::Interface CGI

GnuPG::Interface seems to screw with CGI.pm, as it
grabs stdin  stdout through GnuPG::Handles.

 Dave...

I want to buy a book "Code" by Charles Petzold.

streetsonline - not available
whsmith 12.45 + 2.74 = 15.19 delivery 1-2 weeks
bol.com 12.59 + 2.95 = 15.54 delivery 3-7 days
pcbooks 13.99 + 3.50 = 17.49 next day delivery
amazon 11.13 + 2.75 = 13.88 dispatched within 24 hours

And the Amazon website has a good review of the book, and several comments
by other people who have bought it, whereas the other sites have no details
at all. No one I've found matches Amazon's service and price for books, if
the others want to compete online they are going to have to do much better.

I boycotted Amazon for a while, and stopped being an Associate, but found I
was buying less books because they were too expensive and hard to get. So I
guess I'm back to them again now.

Well no-one's saying you can't use the Amazon site to get reviews and info
about a book :)

Since I gave up Amazon, I've found myself going into bookshops more.
Browsing in a bookshop is still _by far_ the best way to buy books.

And I end up buying more books. Because for each book that I got into the
shop looking for, I find another two that seem really interesting. Amazon's
"readers who bought this book..." feature really doesn't achieve the same
thing.

Bugger! Why did that work.

This test doesn't have any CCs.

Apologies if this _does_ get thru to the list, but in the long run it'll
be worth it as you'll get less of those irritating Acxiom disclaimers :)

Hmmm that _is_ weird then. Everything that I've sent to the list
in the last week or so from this webmail account has failed to appear
on the list. Mails have got thru to individuals and other lists without
a problem.

Unfortunately, as it's a very primitive webmail (written by me) it
doesn't store the outgoing mails, so I can't see what I'm doing
wrong.

No http://london.pm/ :-(

2001-02-22 Thread Philip Newton

Someone brought up the possibility of the domain name london.pm. I wanted to
know whether that was possible. .pm stands for St. Pierre et Miquelon, which
belongs to France (if I'm not mistaken, that's two small islands off the
coast of Canada), and AFNIC, the French NIC, is responsible for .pm. So I
asked them whether it's possible to register a domain in .pm for
non-residents, and got back the following answer:

Le .pm n'est pas encore ouvert; nous ne connaissons pas
encore les regles pour avoir un .pm mais il sera gere par
l'AFNIC. L'AFNIC gere seulement le .fr pour le moment.

For non-frog-speakers, Babelfish offers the following translation:

The pm is not yet open; we do not know the rules yet to have
a pm but it will be managed by the AFNIC. The AFNIC manages
only the fr for the moment.

So, no http://london.pm/ right now :-(

But maybe in the future![1]

Philip Newton

[1] Though when I poked around a little, it appears to be a little involved
to obtain a .fr domain for non-residents of France. And it has to be applied
for through a French ISP (or an international ISP that operates in France as
well)[2]. AFNIC charges the ISP 39 EUR or 18 EUR for creation of the domain
name (depending on the plan they chose) and 15 EUR annually, so prices
direct from ISP will be no lower than that. Apparently, individuals are
encouraged to register under .nom.fr since
http://www.nic.fr/english/register/charter.html says .fr is for "French
companies with SIREN/SIRET number".

[2] A list is at http://www.nic.fr/cgi-bin/conv ; it says 969 total.

Deja-Vu. We (being other people on the list, and not actually me)
tried this about 2 years ago, with almost exactly the same results.
Back then they were going to do it 'in the future' or 'never' too.

Don't start holding your breath just yet.

IIRC we also investigated the possibility of registering pm.org.uk,
but Nominet have a silly rule that prevents anyone from having third
level domains with only two characters :(

Silly registrars. Silly rules.

At the time, it was French government policy to not let their colonies
use their TLDs and instead force them all to use .fr. That seems to
have changed in the last few months.

Don't start holding your breath just yet.

I was causing some trouble over this very recently*. And with some success!
Whilst AFNIC will continue to run the registry, they will be allowing
registrations 'soon'. They are currently consulting the people of .pm to
establish the rules the registry will operate under.

* - which involved the islan's ISP, a couple of other .pm businesses and
community groups, and a plan to approach ICANN and have the domain taken
away from AFNIC on the grounds that they were not properly administering
it.

Wow. I especially like the second paragraph. It seemed like an exercise in
"how many times can we fit the words qw[Paris France Perl] into three
sentences". But the final sentence appears to bear them out :-)
