It's interesting to hear all that. As nice as the Linux Libertine font
is, it's the one that gives me the most issues, such as the one
described above. I'm sure that the hassles I experience are different
from the ones you face, but when you say that it's getting annoying, I
fully agree.

Thanks, Scott and Günter, for your quick, helpful replies. 

I had followed Scott's advice and found the offending character. It was
indeed the lower-case Greek letter "sigma", not in a word-final position
(i.e., "σ"). (There was just one of them in the document). 

I was then puzzling over LyX's error message -- "There is no v in font
LinLibertineT-osf-lgr". It didn't seem to make sense, for two reasons:
(1) the problem was certainly the letter "sigma", but in principle it
has nothing to do with a "v"; and (2) in the PDF print-out, the letter
"sigma" is printed correctly. So, all in all, nothing is missing. I
couldn't figure it out or find anything about it, and then came Günter's
explanation. 

So at least I've understood (sort of), but this is strange behaviour
from LyX. LaTeX, on the other hand, doesn't complain and prints the
"sigma" identically. 

I'm wondering if the problem might be solved by LyX following LaTeX's
advice. If, as LaTeX complains, "The libertine-type1 package is
obsolete", then perhaps LyX should be using, as LaTeX's suggests,
"\usepackage[type1]{libertineRoman}" in the Preamble instead of
"\usepackage{libertine-type1}". For my part, I have no idea. 

Anyway, thanks for your help. LyX is fantastic software--keep up the
development!

“Missing Glyphs!” / LinLibertine

Hello, List Members, 

I'm experiencing strange issues with LyX's "Libertine" font when I
attempt to compile a document. I'm now using LyX 2.2.2 on Mac OSX
10.11.6 (El Cap.). I didn't have these issues in the past, when I first
created the documents. (I can't remember on which version of LyX they
were created, but it was't that long ago).

One of the documents, for example, is in French and German, with French
being the main language. When I hit "View" or "Update", LyX gives me the
following error:

- "Missing Glyphs!"

with the following description:

- "Missing character: There is no v in font LinLibertineT-osf-lgr!"

I've tried to scan the source code, but can't find the offending
character(s).

If I chose "Show Output Anyway", the document appears to compile
correctly, although the document is long and complex and I can't run the
risk of a missing character in a footnote somewhere.

Even more strangely, if I export to LaTeX and compile using a TeX
editor, the document compiles correctly with no issues at all.

However, the LaTeX compile log file does indicate a warning:

- "The libertine-type1 package is obsolete. For new documents, please
use \usepackage[type1]{libertineRoman}" 

I note that LyX (2.2.2) still puts "\usepackage{libertine-type1}" in the
Preamble.

This looks like a font problem, and I know that these things are a
nuisance. I use the "Libertine" font a lot, and I'd like it just to
work, as it used to. I can't run the risk of losing characters in long,
complex documents.

I've searched for possible similar problems on the forum and elsewhere,
but have found none. If anyone knows of the problem, and how to fix it,
I'd greatly appreciate any pointers anyone might be able to provide.

ERT before first \item inside enumerate environment

I would like to achieve in LyX the equivalent of

\begin{frame}{WTF?}
\begin{enumerate}
\conti
\item yada
\end{enumerate}
\end{frame}

But if I put the cursor after 1. and use ctrl-L, \seti appears after 
\item.  If I put the cursor after the frametitle and use ctrl-L, 
\seti appears before \begin{enumerate}

Separators between frames in beamer template

Hi,

In this template the frames are separated by what appears as red 
underlining, but is a blank line in the source. Is there a way of 
inserting this? I have been inserting a blank ERT box in order to 
start a new frame, but this red underlining looks better :-)

I cloned, to use the terminology of the enumitem package 
documentation section 7, a new itemize list and put it in the LaTeX 
preamble of my Lyx file:



\newlist{emptydisplay}{itemize}{1}
\setlist[emptydisplay]{label={}, itemindent=1em, align=left, labelsep=!}

Now I can use this new itemize list by putting, e.g., the following 
in an ERT box:


\begin{emptydisplay}
\item The inventor of bifocals wrote an autobiography
\item The first post-master general of the US wrote an autobiography
\end{emptydisplay}

Is there a way of making this new list a Lyx style, so I can apply it 
just as I apply Quote, Enumerate-Resume, etc.?  I suspect this might 
involve modifying a layout file, or, even the enumitem module, is 
that right? And if so, are there instructions somewhere for doing this?

I had to do a full OS reinstall (Mac 10.7, Lion). I thus installed the latest
version of LyX (2.0.7). While working with the newly installed version of LyX, I
noticed that there are menu items missing.

For example, when I go to Insert  List / TOC, there are only 3 choices: Table
of Contents, Nomenclature,  BibTex Bibliography. There should, I think, be
others, such as List of Algorithms, List of Figures, List of Tables 
Index List.

Similarly, under Insert  Float, the new version of LyX only proposes Figure
Wrap Float  Table Wrap Float. Algorithm, Figure  Table are missing.

The toolbar buttons for these missing menu items are present on the toolbar, but
can anyone say why the menu items are missing? Is this a bug? Is there a way to
get them back?

I used to work on LyX version 2.0.6 and there was no such problem.

refstyle.cfg in order to get the desired result.
To obtain this, I should pass the noconfig option to refstyle.

Now, if I insert it in the field

it is not passed to refstyle.

If I insert manually in the preamble
\usepackage[noconfig]{refstyle}
I get an error.

So, how do I pass the noconfig options to refstyle?

BTW: I don't know why, but in my case refstyle is not localized.

Hiding changes

We have some technical documentation which used to be maintained by a single
person who's now left us.

I'd like to make each developer responsible for making their own updates, with
technical and stylistic approval resting with two other people.

As the documentation is monolithic we can prevent simultaneous update loss by
simple Windows file locking, and identify changes by enforcing change
tracking.

What I'm concerned about though is how I can temporarily hide an update which
has been made but is not going to be released at this time without having to
actually cut it out, publish, and then restore.

Any ideas?

As a user what I observerd was that after ubuntu was updated lyx stopped
working, that is a fact. I think we all agree that shouldn't happen, so
it would be good to find the cause and make sure it doesn't happen in
future upgrades.

That should be the principle, but my experience is that if an upgrade 
is flawlessly successfull then you have been very lucky and I think that 
looking for upgrade bugs (which can be specific to that particular 
upgrade) can be both difficult and a waste of time for developers.


What I do (and I suggest) is the following: partition your disk so to have 
two linux-dedicated partitions, say 1 and 2, and let's say you have a
working linux on 1. When you want to install a new linux distribution (not 
necessarly ubuntu)  then  install it on 2 and just play with it 
configuring everything for your needs. When it looks stable to you, move 
your personal data (your home) on the new partition and don't use 1 any 
longer. This way, 1 will be available for the next installation.


Two objections can be made to this schema:

1) there is a waste of disk space
2) it looks like a waste of time, since you have to set up everything 
again.


What I can say is that:

1) disk space is cheap nowadays: if you store space hungry data (videos, 
pictures and music) on a separate partition to be mounted separately, 50Gb 
is more than enough for the system. Moreover, you can think of it as a 
backup: you still have your good old working system with your home, since 
you don't touch it.


2) this is true only if the upgrade is smooth. Otherwise, it is probably 
true the contrary. Moreover,if you pass from one ubuntu to another and you 
keep track of what you had to do to have a system which fits your needs, 
very likely the next time it will be much faster (and nearly as fast as a 
smooth upgrade).

Footnotes in titles

Hello list members,

This one may be easy but I can't figure it out.

If you put a footnote at the end of a title (sometimes it has to be done), the
footnote mark obviously takes on the default font of the title: usually
something big and bold. This makes the footnote mark stick out in a way you
might not want. Hence the question: is there a way to change the formatting of

footnote mark obviously takes on the default font of the title: usually
something big and bold. This makes the footnote mark stick out in a way you

Yes, I know, but I hardly use it in text mode, if ever, whereas I use it 
quite often in math mode: so I have unbound it and I made the shortcuts

\bind M-period M-period M-period math-insert \\cdots

They make my workflow faster, but I can't guess why they don't work 
without the Alt modifier.

to implement this manually. Any solutions seem to rely on the use of an external
database, which I don't use. But it doesn't seem as if it should be that
complicated, especially for someone not averse to using ERT.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

in your theorem environment, which would allow you not to put the ~.

BTW, I discovered that using an empty red box is a better work around, 
since the exported latex is clean as I intended.

Changing LyX language

Hi,

I'm a new LyX user and I am having a little problem: my system is in 
Brazilian Portuguese, but I want LyX to be in English.


I'm using Mac OS X 10.8.4 and LyX 2.0.6.

Language configuration (Configuração de Língua) does not work. 
Everything I found on Google is for old version or Windows and Linux.


I don't want to change dictionary or anything like that, all my 
documents are in BP.

The following works for me on Ubuntu (I think it should work on Mac).
Run the command
   locale -a
Then locate the language-country combination you want (for me, it
shows as 'en_US.utf8' in the output), and then run the following
command:
   LANG=en_US.utf8 lyx

 I don't know much about Macs. You could try running LyX the normal
 way, and then viewing processes to see what the command is that's
 being run. There's probably some Mac utility that does this. Or run
 ps aux | grep -i lyx

This shouldn't be necessary.
You have two different types of language:

1) The interface language
You change this within the preferences.
Like every other Mac application you reach it with Command+,
There it's in Language Settings.

2) The document language
This is the language for text formatting and spell checking.
A document doesn't have to be written mono-lingual. You may
assign parts of it a different language. The language passed
to the spell checker corresponds to the text language.
To make a language the default document language create an
empty document, change the document language to your favorite
one and save this as document defaults.

The LyX application for Mac comes with all languages we have
dictionaries and translations for.

You can reach the global preferences panel with:
Press and hold Command (Cmd) key and then comma (,)

What do you think is incomplete?
I tried this with brazilian keyboard and it worked.

The change of GUI language has to be saved,
the apply button doesn't work in this case.

I tried it with portuguese language environment for
a test user. I changed the GUI language to inglés,
saved it, restarted LyX and got the english interface.
I doubt that there is any difference between inglés
and inglés (UK) for the GUI, but this is better
than nothing. :)

Oh! I was hitting apply. LyX only have European Portuguese and the EP 
and BP words for save are different. I totally miss the button.

Brazilian Portuguese, but I want LyX to be in English.


I'm using Mac OS X 10.8.4 and LyX 2.0.6.

Language configuration (Configuração de Língua) does not work. 
Everything I found on Google is for old version or Windows and Linux.


I don't want to change dictionary or anything like that, all my 
documents are in BP.

Have no idea how to call LyX on terminal. It was a drag'n'drop install.

Hi Alexandre,

The following works for me on Ubuntu (I think it should work on Mac).
Run the command
   locale -a
Then locate the language-country combination you want (for me, it
shows as 'en_US.utf8' in the output), and then run the following
command:
   LANG=en_US.utf8 lyx

 I don't know much about Macs. You could try running LyX the normal
 way, and then viewing processes to see what the command is that's
 being run. There's probably some Mac utility that does this. Or run
 ps aux | grep -i lyx

You have two different types of language:

1) The interface language
You change this within the preferences.
Like every other Mac application you reach it with Command+,
There it's in Language Settings.

2) The document language
This is the language for text formatting and spell checking.
A document doesn't have to be written mono-lingual. You may
assign parts of it a different language. The language passed
to the spell checker corresponds to the text language.
To make a language the default document language create an
empty document, change the document language to your favorite
one and save this as document defaults.

The LyX application for Mac comes with all languages we have
dictionaries and translations for.

What do you think is incomplete?
I tried this with brazilian keyboard and it worked.

The change of GUI language has to be saved,
the apply button doesn't work in this case.

I tried it with portuguese language environment for
a test user. I changed the GUI language to inglés,
saved it, restarted LyX and got the english interface.
I doubt that there is any difference between inglés
and inglés (UK) for the GUI, but this is better
than nothing. :)

Oh! I was hitting apply. LyX only have European Portuguese and the EP 
and BP words for save are different. I totally miss the button.


Now everything is working fine. There was no bug, just idiomatic misleading.

problem previewing pdf figure

I have a pdf figure in my lyx file. Exporting the entire document to pdf 
using pdflatex works fine. The problem is previewing the image in lyx. 
The error message I get is Error converting to loadable format.  When 
i google for this problem i find several places that says its a problem 
with an older version of Ghostscript, but that the problem has been 
fixed if you have version 9 or greater. I checked the version of GS i 
have in the lyx directory and its 9.04 so I should be fine but I'm still 
not :-(
