cocoAspell stops working after encountering accented characters

2011-02-04 Thread Daisuke Koya
Hello All,

I am using LyX 1.6.8 on Mac OS 10.6.6.
I am also using cocoAspell for spell checking.

A problem I have with this spell checker is that every time after encountering
an accented character, it starts to think very common words such as the are
misspelled.

If someone knows how to remedy this hiccup, I would be very grateful. Thank you
very much in advance.

Best,

Daisuke Koya

Then I looked into the dictionary folder and saw that there is no

Then I realized what the problem is:
I didn't compile the aspell dictionary! (the README-file tells me I have to
 do this ;-))
CocoAspell does this automatically if you open its preference pane
(Systemeinstellungen): If there's a new dict in the path, compiling starts.
After compiling be sure that you have checked at least German in the
 CocoAspell preference pane.

So maybe you have forgotten this compilation step, too?

Yes. I got the English dictionary to run. I figured out, that the cursor
must be in the beginning of the file, so that the spellchecker can find
errors. If you are at the end of the file with the cursor, it doesn't find
 anything.

Getting cocoaSpell to work with lyx on a Mac | Or Alternative

2010-07-12 Thread iustifico
Hello altogether,

I have a copy of lyx (1.6.6.1) running on a mac (Snow Leopard). Everything
works fine.

Now I want some sort of spellchecking. I went for the recommendation of this
page
http://wiki.lyx.org/Mac/MacSpelling
and installed cocoAspell. The installation was self-explanatory. Now I wanted
to tell lyx, to use this tool, so I put this line
/Library/Application Support/cocoAspell/aspell6-en-6.0-0/english.alias
into the Alternative Language field. When I hit the Spellchecker-Button, the
one with ABC on it, nothing happens. I even tried some misspelling, to see if
lyx finds them. Is there more things to tell Lyx, so it can use cocaspell?

By the way, there is a great spell-checker on board with OS-X. Isn't it
possible to just use this one?

Thank you for any kind of help or suggestions for alternative solutions!

Kind regards,
iustifico

Also check LyX Preferences Language Settings Spelling; does
aspell show up for the spellchecker engine?

If one or the other of these is needed, please modify the wiki to add
this instruction.

That's on tap for LyX-2.0 (currently in development).

Did you try reconfiguring LyX? (LyX > Reconfigure, then restarting LyX)

Also check LyX > Preferences > Language Settings > Spelling; does
aspell show up for the spellchecker engine?

If one or the other of these is needed, please modify the wiki to add
this instruction.

That's on tap for LyX-2.0 (currently in development).

Re: Same question: Spellchecking OSX and cocoAspell

2010-06-04 Thread jezZiFeR

Dear Murat,

thanks again. I have now authorized each of the folders which contain
dictionaries to read an write, just to be sure, and still had the same
problem. In fact, I repaired permissions on 30th of May, very recently
therefore. I now repaired permissions again, just to find out, if the
mentioned files change their status again. The permissions did not
change after that on any of the dictionary-folders.

But I now figured out, that also the english spellchecking does not
work. In difference to the alternative languages the spellchecker
starts to check, but it does not recognize any english word. This is
when I add no alternative language, maybe it is not in english
spellchecking mode then. I have checked german as standard-language.
It also does not recognize any german word, by the way…

As soon as I add an alternative language in the appropriate field the
spellchecker does not work at all.

Maybe there is a very simple setting I missed, I´m not sure. I have
entered \usepackage{babel} as language-package, is that correct?

Thanks again, best
Jess

I hope you could help me. When I switch back to the English file, the
spellchecker works again… Why doesn´t it work with any of the german
 dictionaries I have tried out?

Same question: Spellchecking OSX and cocoAspell

2010-06-04 Thread jezZiFeR

Hello,

I hope, that somebody could help, as I really have no clue, why
spellchecking does not work in LyX on my computer. If you need any
further information, please let me know. Here is the problem I have:

I have tried to use Spellchecking with LyX 1.6.5 on OSX with
cocoAspell. This seems to work fine with the english dictionary, which
I have added as »Alternative language«, as described. But as soon as I
want to change to another language (german), which I have placed in
the same folder as the English-file, I get the following message:

"Das Rechtschreibprogramm konnte nicht gestartet werden
Error: The file "/Library/Application
Support/cocoAspell/aspell6-de-20030222-1.alias" can not be opened for
reading."

I hope you could help me. When I switch back to the English file, the
spellchecker works again… Why doesn´t it work with any of the german
dictionaries I have tried out?

Hi Jess,

Is the indicated alias absent from the indicated location? Maybe you
can create it manually and point it to the de file for aspell?

FYI: I can spellcheck both in English and French on my MacBookPro under SL.

Re: Same question: Spellchecking OSX and cocoAspell

2010-06-04 Thread jezZiFeR

Dear Murat,

thanks again. I have now authorized each of the folders which contain
dictionaries to read an write, just to be sure, and still had the same
problem. In fact, I repaired permissions on 30th of May, very recently
therefore. I now repaired permissions again, just to find out, if the
mentioned files change their status again. The permissions did not
change after that on any of the dictionary-folders.

But I now figured out, that also the "english" spellchecking does not
work. In difference to the alternative languages the spellchecker
starts to check, but it does not recognize any english word. This is
when I add no alternative language, maybe it is not in english
spellchecking mode then. I have checked "german" as standard-language.
It also does not recognize any german word, by the way…

As soon as I add an alternative language in the appropriate field the
spellchecker does not work at all.

Maybe there is a very simple setting I missed, I´m not sure. I have
entered "\usepackage{babel}" as language-package, is that correct?

Thanks again, best
Jess

We need now Lyx-wizards who better knows the interaction between aspell and Lyx.
Have you tried to reinstall cocoaspell and reconfigure Lyx? Maybe
there is a problem in your installation? I do not have any other idea
about what is going wrong in your case. Sorry,

cocoAspell with two languages in a text?

2010-02-07 Thread Peter Baumgartner

I have an English text with many German quotes. Changing always the language
for spell chacking in the lyx settings is very tiresome.

Is there another way to let know cocoAspell that is has to change language
for spell checking? Maybe it can be done with marking the text with the
language text style? The text in Lyx appears underlined e.g. lyx knows
what ist what language. But how to transmit this knowledge to cocoAspell?

Or are there other tips for spell checking of two languages in one text? It
would be already very helpful if cocoAspell/Lyx could ignore the other
language and not always trying to correct words of the other language.

Help would be very appreciated,
Peter

Would you please describe how you installed and configured it?

I'm glad you asked this question. I needed to add a Spanish language
dictionary to cocoAspell and with a little googling and command line work, I
got it working.

The cocoAspell project appears moribund, the documentation is incomplete,
and the site is beginning to suffer from link rot. I think the next time I
need to install and configure LyX, I'll just install aspell using Fink and
eschew using cocoAspell to make it available as an OS X service.

First, install cocoAspell and make sure it's working properly with LyX as an
English language spellchecker. That's pretty straight forward.

cocoAspell installs a number of things. It installs aspell itself in
/usr/local/bin and /usr/local/lib. It installs a preference pane in system
preferences. It installs a large number of English dictionaries. It installs
a service in ~/Library/Services. That's all OK. If you want the aspell
service available in all user accounts, you'll need to move that last item,
as root, to /Library/Services (you'll probably have to create that
directory). If you just need the service available in the account from which
you installed it, just leave things as cocoAspell installed it.

You'll need to choose one of the available English dictionaries in the
preference pane. Then in LyX preferences you choose aspell as the
spellchecker and add this line to the Alternative Language field:

/Library/Application Support/cocoAspell/aspell6-en-6.0-0/english.alias

That's just following the instructions in the Wiki. Test that you can now
spellcheck an English language document in LyX.

Next, you'll need to download and install a German language dictionary. The
link at the cocoAspell site is dead. Use this one:

ftp://ftp.gnu.org/gnu/aspell/dict/0index.html

Unzip the file and follow the README instructions to install the dictionary
into aspell (it's the usual command line sequence of ./configure, make, make
install, make clean).

Now copy or move the dictionary directory (in my case it
is aspell6-es-1.9a-1) to /Library/Application Support/cocoAspell. Chown the
directory to match the English language directory ownership (it should be
the name of your admin account as owner and 501 as group).

Here's the tricky step. Be sure System Preferences is not running. Get into
the command line and become root. Run System Preferences as root! Don't use
the open command, instead give the full path to the executable:

/Applications/System\ Preferences.app/Contents/MacOS/System\ Preferences

Do one thing and one thing only while running System Preferences as root.
Click on the Spelling preference pane that cocoAspell installed so it finds,
compiles and configures your new dictionary. Quit System Preferences. Reopen
it from the GUI. You should now be able to choose your new dictionary.

To use your new dictionary, change the Alternative Language field in LyX

To use your new dictionary, change the Alternative Language field in LyX
preferences appropriately. In my case, it's:

/Library/Application Support/cocoAspell/aspell6-es-1.9a-1/spanish.alias

aspell, cocoaspell with lyx - a fake?

2009-08-27 Thread Joachim Osnabryg
Could it be that the spellchecking possibility in LyX with Aspell or

I have worked till today without spellchecker in LyX, but I should install

Now I worked about 8 hours to install and configure (Coco)Aspell for LyX

of it).

First I installed CocoAspell, because in the LyX-wiki page vor Mac

it is said:
The easiest spellchecker to install is cocoAspell. CocoAspell provides an

I did it. But LyX could not find it. LyX searched for:

which does not exist. (I want the spellchecker for German)

I installed Aspell with MacPorts. Same result. Only after putting in the

CocoAspell bug on Mac

Installed Lyx version 1.6.2 and CocoAspell version 2.0.4 on Mac

When spell checking a document in Lyx I couldn't add words to the

After some web searching I discovered a fix is to comment the line
home-dir $HOME/Library/Preferences/aspell in file /usr/local/etc/
aspell.conf
This fixed the problem but involved a lot of messing about as user
root and altering permissions to allow me to edit this file.

Lyx and CocoAspell are excellent applications. I think the issue I've

The cocoAspell installer puts cocoAspell.service into

cocoAspell works with Lyx in Tiger, not Leopard

2009-04-18 Thread Richard Talley
Hello LyX-Users,

I installed MacTeX 2008, cocoAspell 2.0.4.i86, Skim 1.2.1, and LyX
1.6.2 on an Intel Mac running Leopard (10.5.6).

I have almost exactly the same setup on my personal machine except
it's MacTeX 2007, Tiger (10.4.11) and, obviously, cocoAspell
2.0.4.ppc.

Works like a charm on my machine. On the Intel Mac, cocoAspell appears
to be installed correctly, it's available as a spelling service to
TextEdit, exactly the same path is in the Alternative language field
of Preferences: Language Settings: Spellchecker.

(the path is /Library/Application
Support/cocoAspell/aspell6-en-6.0-0/english.alias, as the Wiki
suggests.)

When I go to spellcheck on the Intel installation, LyX
does.absolutely nothing (other than showing (dialog-show
spellchecker: F7) in the status bar.) No error, no spell check dialog,
nothing.

I want to deploy this setup to a classroom of a couple of dozen Macs
in order to teach a short Why the power of LyX and TeX will save you
time and effort type class, but this one simple thing has turned into
a showstopper.

Any suggestions? Anybody on the list successfully using cocoAspell
with LyX on Leopard?

Here's another anomaly I just noticed. Although TextEdit is quite
happy to use the Aspell spelling service, when I try to set Skim to
use it, Skim complains with a Couldn't contact Spell Checker. That
gives me a hint that there is something not quite right with the
cocoAspell spelling service, but heck if I know what it is.

TextEdit, exactly the same path is in the Alternative language field
of Preferences: Language Settings: Spellchecker.

(the path is /Library/Application
Support/cocoAspell/aspell6-en-6.0-0/english.alias, as the Wiki
suggests.)

When I go to spellcheck on the Intel installation, LyX
does.absolutely nothing (other than showing (dialog-show
spellchecker: F7) in the status bar.) No error, no spell check dialog,
nothing.

I want to deploy this setup to a classroom of a couple of dozen Macs
in order to teach a short "Why the power of LyX and TeX will save you
time and effort" type class, but this one simple thing has turned into
a showstopper.

Any suggestions? Anybody on the list successfully using cocoAspell
with LyX on Leopard?

Here's another anomaly I just noticed. Although TextEdit is quite
happy to use the Aspell spelling service, when I try to set Skim to
use it, Skim complains with a "Couldn't contact Spell Checker." That
gives me a hint that there is something not quite right with the
cocoAspell spelling service, but heck if I know what it is.

It works fine for me under Leopard. I don't believe I did anything
specialto install it, just follow the instructions. Maybe try to
uninstall and reinstall?

Installing CocoAspell and Aspell both

2009-01-19 Thread jezZiFeR

Hello,

as I have problems with Aspell for a long time now and I don´t get
them solved, I would like to test CocoAspell and see, if this works
better for me. Is it possible to install them both on the same Mac
with OSX or do I have to remove Aspell first?

LyX and cocoaspell

2005-05-27 Thread Jordi Tritlla i Cambra

Dear lyxers

I am rather new to LyX on OSX (10.3.9).
So far I managed quite well to get in everything
in working order, starting to write my first
paper using elsart. My only problem is that I
cannot make cocoaspell work under LyX even making
the symbolic link. I have follow the instruction
in LyX wiki and I got this answer from Lyx:

Error: the file
/usr/local/lib/aspell-0.60e/english can not be
opened for reading

Any suggestions?

Cheers,

Apparently I need to update the wiki to reflect better how to install
cocoAspell (which is now done).

If you go to the cocoAspell site, you'll notice there that dictionaries
must be downloaded and installed separately from
ftp://ftp.gnu.org/gnu/aspell/dict. I believe you haven't yet done
this, an that's why it's producing this error for you.

Let me know if that does the trick.

The instructions used to be in the LyX/Mac howto at

cocoaAspell doesn't work with Panther (MacOS-10.3). If you're running
MacOS-10.2 and don't plan to upgrade, try:
