It depends on from where you got your NeoOffice. If you got it from the
NeoOffice site, you might need Java. If you got it from the Mac App Store, you
don’t need Java because all the Java-dependent features have been neutered.
This is because Apple does not allow Java-dependent programs in the App Store.

I think most (all?) the Java dependencies in Open(Libra)(Neo)Office are in the
database, but I could be wrong.

Java is in a peculiar position right now. I used to recommend everyone upgrade
their Java right away because the Java plugin in Web browsers was nearly as
reliable a security hole as Flash. But, most (all?) the modern browsers don’t
support Java on Web pages any more. (Safari stopped supporting Java with
version 12.) Almost all Web pages that formerly used Java have replaced the
Java functions with HTML5+Javascript. (Javascript is not Java.)

So, unless you really need Java for something else, I’m suggesting it can be
removed rather than updated.

I keep Java around on my machines because UofL has a VPN that needs Java.

There are many programs that use Java. The most common are probably Open Office
and its clones.

this question has come up before but I don’t remember the answer. Should I

[MacGroup] Java

2014-10-19 Thread Harry Jacobson-Beyer
I just installed Java and went to a web site that I know uses Java (Thanks Jeff
Slyn).

Java was trying to load when it quit and I received this message:

Application Blocked. Click for details.
Your security settings have blocked an untrusted application from
running.

I have three options: Details, Ignore, Reload

When I click details I get this:

Java Plug-in 10.71.2.14
Using JRE version 1.7.0_71-b14 Java HotSpot(TM) 64-Bit Server VM
User home directory = /Users/Jake

c: clear console window
f: finalize objects on finalization queue
g: garbage collect
h: display this help message
l: dump classloader list
m: print memory usage
o: trigger logging
q: hide console
r: reload policy configuration
s: dump system and deployment properties
t: dump thread list
v: dump thread stack
x: clear classloader cache
0-5: set trace level to n

calling downloadEagerorAll

When I click Reload it attempts to reload but the same thing happens.

I can’t figure out how to let Java do its thing. Help please.

Thanks.

I closed Safari and reloaded the web site. The actual message read:

I know this is a Java thing because the Java logo appears when I first load the

Thanks Jonathan, I'll wait on the herd to say yea or nay

By the way, I tried to get the API set up today from the data vendor but they
had some questions about the programmer's experience in C C++, so I emailed

put a delay on coding. If he can get the data from the firm, convert from

your doorstep trying to learn how to set up what I want.time always stands

Hang in there, it may be Christmas morning but I'll be there!!

Harry,

Lee will have to answer this but it sure seems like you don't have Java
installed. I understand from the smart folks that enabling Java on our Mac
is NOT the Java that is needed for many programs so you have to go to Oracle
and download the first time, then you will be notified of updates.

Here is the bottom of my Sys. Pref. The far right is the current ver. of Java,
when opened it has several settings, one is concerning updates.

[MacGroup] Java Java Runtime

2014-08-11 Thread John Robinson
Folks,

Has Apple cones something with Java that won’t allow us complete usage?

Inside Safari I have “Enable JavaScrip” allowed in preferences.

I have downloaded (twice) the Java Runtime, (from Oracle) and when I log onto
the account I need I am given a small java file that is downloaded into the
download folder. Before Mavericks that was all that was needed to log onto my
trading account, now all I get is a text box.

I tried with Chrome, same thing. I have called the broker three times and the
last guy says the program is not defaulting to the Java file, rather it’s
opening it in text rather than the Java.

He told me to reinstall Java Runtime.

I still have the problem, do any of you know HOW to get Safari to run the small
file that is downloaded as Java rather than as text. He said the file is being
told to be opened by the wrong application. He may not have a clue.

Thanks for any suggestions.

The very latest Java 7 update 13 has already been released. You can get it from
www.java.com.

My recommendation is that you see if you can get along without Java in your
browser. Java has been a bag of bugs since Oracle took it over after buying
Sun. There are several known bugs in this most recent release because Oracle
had to rush it out the door.

[MacGroup] Java help

2007-10-09 Thread Robert Klein
Hi,

My wife has a PowerBook G4 running OS 10.3.9, and Safari 1.3.2, with the
latest updates installed. When accessing via the web a Remotelink
application (to view video content--echocardiograms), she can only get the
still frames. It can't be for Windows machines only. The web help page
says that Mac users have to have the Java 1.4.1 plugin in order to run the
video:

Macintosh Users

If you are using a Macintosh computer, the secure gateway works with the
Safari browser.

To determine if your machine has the Sun JVM:

Launch the Safari browser.
From the Help menu, choose Installed Plug-ins.
Look for the Java plug-in icon. Note that you may have Java 1.3.1, but make
sure that you also have at least Java 1.4.1. If you do not have the plug-in,
then you need to install it. (It also said elsewhere that it won't work
with Mozilla; in Firefox, I couldn't even get the still images.)

Looking in SafariHelpInstalled Plug-ins, a list of plug-ins and there are
no icons, but rather a long list of plugins in section. Among them is a
section, Java Plug-in for Cocoa where it says Java 1.4.2_11 Plug-in
(Cocoa), and there is another section titled, Java Plug-in where it says
Java 1.3.1 Plug-in. Both sections list 2 MIME types.

I tried downloading J2SE50Release4.pkg and Java142Update1.pkg and neither
would install (message said it can't be installed on that machine). I ran
ApplicationsUtilitiesJavaJava Web Start which is way over my head. By
the way, in that same folder are Java Plugin Settings, Java 1.4.2 Plugin
Settings and Java 1.3.1 Plugin Settings. When I opened Java Plugin Settings
1.4.2, I got a preferences dialogue that did not appear to provide any
guidance or settings for being used in Safari.

In SafariPreferencesSecurityWeb Content, all boxes are checked except
Block pop-up windows.

I couldn't find anything in the Apple Support section of apple.com or on the
Sun site.

So, it seems that the right plug-in is on the machine, but not installed or
working in Safari; therefore, she cannot see the video of the
echocardiogram. There is no error message from the Remotelink web page to
indicate that the browser is not compatible or anything else.

Just for laughs, I tried to access the Remotelink video on my G5 running
10.4.10 and Safari 3.0.3 and had the same results.

I'm stumped, so I am calling on the experts. What can I do to fix this?

Thanks,

Robert

Just a guess about the problems (of which I've had zero): I'd guess
that the problems with this update come from not having done earlier
updates (like skipping the Java 1.4.2 Update 2 or the 2005-02, which

Those who skipped some updates which affected Java get a mess.

Of course, I have no way of testing this hypothesis.

I suspect the people complaining ran those updates.

My gut guess is that the new Apple release shipped a bad binary in one
of the files and the previous update allows said binary to be replaced
with the older version.

Of course we Java people are all desperately waiting for Tiger aka
Java 5.0 (codenamed Tiger as well) on the Mac. OS X 10.4 is just a
boring cost we'll have to pay while we wait for the real Tiger to
appear :).
