I never had the issue either. But then I don't have any widgets loaded because
I don't know what they are for really. If you don't have the widgets loaded,
then it won't give you update trouble.

You would just need to have it disabled for the update I'd think. Then you

Did you check the "extensions" pane in system preferences to see if the iTunes

the iTunes widget and then you should be able to get the update.

Re: Is Apple's iCloud website now completely inaccessible

2016-10-31 Thread Blee Blat
I have not got the site to work at all here. I tried 3 times and Safari crashed
all 3 times. I didn't even get the timezone selected. It just crashed after I
signed in and tried to click the button that said to change the timezone.
Clicking the button labelled "setup instructions" also produced a crash. So I
suppose it's just as well that I haven't needed icloud.com for anything. I'm
not sure what you can do from the site that you couldn't manage from your
devices, but I guess we wait until they fix it to find out.

Re: What We Got from Apple's October 2016 Event | AppleVis

2016-10-28 Thread Blee Blat
I'm sure they have something. It's like everything else. I personally can use a
touchscreen just fine but use a bluetooth keyboard if I'd like to type a lot of
stuff quickly. You'll just have to figure out what your workflow is. I'm sure
someone will get us a physical description once these start shipping. Not too
many programs use function keys all that much these days. I mostly only use
escape for vi in a terminal because command w is less finger movement and
generally closes things most of the time. But volume control gets used a lot
here, so how they implement that would be good to know. I'm sure nobody wants
to knock their head off their ears or accidentally mute something. I'll not see
this personally most likely for a bit since the current Mac is running lovely,
but it's good to know. On a related note, if there was a good terminal app for
iOS, I could probably get by with an iPad for most of what I'm doing.

I've seen this bug occasionally, and I'm not sure what causes it. When it

restarting both mail and voiceover. I've seen a few other keyboard bugs as
well that don't reproduce reliably, so I don't know what's going on with this.

Re: My plan for a clean install of Sierra

That looks sane, just be careful that you don't accidentally erase the
recovery partition, just erase the HD volume. If you erase the recovery
partition, it will drop you into internet recovery and you'll then have to
start with the OS the machine came with before you upgrade to Sierra again and
that would not be fun.

Re: Sierra beta 10.12.1 and IOS 10.1 public beta 1 released

2016-09-24 Thread Blee Blat
I'm seeing this as well sometimes. It seems to be random, would also like to
retract some stuff I said earlier about Mac OS updates. The kernel fixes are
more obvious if you play with it a bit. I have had a bit of time to heavily
load the system and run regular workload through it. Seems to be a large
improvement even though I don't use a lot of the new features. The universal
clipboard thing is really neat though and the music fixes. And it takes more
tabs to be open before Safari becomes unusable.
Will report this bug if I can produce it consistently as well as one other
bug. It seems if you have muted voiceover sounds, then you mute speech, when
you unmute the speech it also unmutes the voiceover sound effects. This doesn't
happen on iOS, only Mac OS.

I believe the dictation and speech settings have been moved to the keyboard

Re: Verizon Fios or Vios and wireless performance

2016-09-23 Thread Blee Blat
You should expect whatever they gave you to be fairly crappy. They are not
interested in giving you a good router. They just ship out the cheapest thing
they have so it will be easier for tech support and such. Putting the modem in
bridge mode and using your own router would be better. I did that here and then
the ISP swapped out the modem with one that doesn't do routing because I
insisted. If you can't bridge the modem you can just put your router's IP in a
DMZ and that should do he same thing, but bridged mode is cleaner.

Re: macos sierra accessibility especially with braille how is it so far?

2016-09-21 Thread Blee Blat
I'm not hitting any issues with anything here. The copy and paste thing is neat
but I don't use Siri so I can't comment on that. I might screw around with it
just to see how well it learns things, but I don't need dictation enough to
care, because often the times when it would be useful, it tends to be too noisy
where I'm at to dictate.

Thanks for that. I think I'll order those because they stock replacement cables
and ear pads. Streaming music is great for tuning out unreasonable people lol
I'm glad iTunes updated that. I did notice that the more things you add to the

It's kind of a shame they don't have a setting to disable artwork. I'd think
that might get you a performance boost.

Well, the whole thing feels a little weird actually since you don't know when
you have brailled an actual character as it were. It's probably something that
we're not getting that is fairly simple since coordination and hand strength
isn't an issue here. It'd be neat to make it work though, because it could be a
lot quicker than the default onscreen keyboard for the times when the bluetooth
one isn't handy. It's probably like dictation in that it's some sort of art.

Yup. They really should do that because I only ever use the music portion. I'd
use it for podcasts, except downcast does that better. They should have file
management and syncing in another app as well. The only reason I bother with
iTunes is to sync or update the phone and listen to music. It should look like
iOS where they have separate apps for everything. .

I actually think Apple does better than the alternatives for accessibility. I
don't have a clue what to do with a lot of the new features and user interface
changes. But there's an on / off switch for everything. If I ever find a use
for these features I don't understand, then I can re-enable them. Just use what
you like. These devices are trying to be made usable for what they believe to
be the common user. I'm not that so I will not complain if I don't like the way
something works. I'll just tweak things to work in a sane way and enjoy the
things that are working.

I like Fred. It's very fast and responsive. It's just quieter than all the

My guess would be that you have unchecked the "announce when caps lock key is
pressed" checkbox in the VoiceOver preferences. Are you getting other sounds
from VoiceOver? Other sounds would be things like progress clicks and the
different clicks when webpages load and stuff like that. So under the "sounds"
tab in the VoiceOver preferences you can find the checkbox for muting voiceover
sounds. Make sure that's unchecked.

Re: Reading Large Text Files

2016-07-08 Thread Blee Blat
Some people find that Vim doesn't read as well as they'd like with VoiceOver.
But TextMate is a similar graphical interface to TextEdit which is what I
thought he was looking for. VoiceOver tends to read the terminal a bit weird
and sometimes doesn't track the cursor as well as one might like in Vim. Unless
I've got something set wrongly, I'd rather use the terminal for that sort of
thing myself.

Yeah, I'm only disappointed that nobody emailed me off list with the logical

distortions that need cleared up. It should be a fun and entertaining

touchbar; into this somehow as well. Maybe they'll have a mac that has a cuddle
bar you have to squeeze to power it on soon too. That'd be kind of neat for
some I'm sure. But this thread is quite comedic. I'm getting some good
entertainment even though I am serious about asking for the logical arguments
for those that believe. No I probably won't convert to anything but I think
these things are worth contemplating.

Re: Iphone Se.

2016-04-18 Thread Blee Blat
Yeah, actually I don't like the smaller form factor I only got the SE because
people were reporting better performance than the 6s+ and nothing I use
regularly really needs the silly 3d touch gimmick as far as I could tell so it
seemed silly to get that device. Never mind that the so-called larger phone
isn't significantly larger since it still fits in most pockets. Certainly these
hands are too big to use a phone with one hand anyway whatever the size so it
was all performance and battery life and such that I was going for. I had
upgrade credit for the SE for free whereas the 6s+ was $400 plus a contract and
I didn't think the extra feature was that important.

Re: clearing notifications on the mac

2016-03-22 Thread Blee Blat
Yes, it works but it's not intuitive because you have to interact with it then
press it. Go to the table of notifications and then interact with it. The first
thing is something that says "today" "clear button". It could be "yesterday" or
something else too depending on how old the notifications you are dealing with
happen to be. What you do is interact with the thing that says clear button and
when you are on the "clear button" then activate that and it should work. I
hope that made some sense.

Which views are the most useful for accessibility in iTunes? Album view for

Re: Selecting text in Terminal

2016-02-21 Thread Blee Blat
I haven't tried this extensively yet but the few things I did paste worked out
rather well. If you press command return instead of just return when you
execute the command it marks the output. Then you can do command shift a and
that will select marked output. and then command c to copy and command v to
paste.

Re: Annoying pitch change bug when using Vocaliser.

Does anyone know which is the most responsive on OS X and iOS respectively and
which is better for battery life on both platforms? Is there a way to get data
on this? I notice that VoiceOver doesn't show up in battery usage. I would pay
for a software Voice equivalent to DoubleTalk if I could get one. These voices
particularly Alex sound too human to me. I'd prefer a really fast mechanical

Re: IOS 9.x strangeness

2015-11-10 Thread Blee Blat
Well, at least your not dealing with the iPhone refusing to stay signed into
Apple services after reboots.
Also networking on ios is now ridiculously slow expecially for secure
connections. I thought it was the router but then I realize that LTE had the
same problem. Then I realized that encrypted icloud services like the app store
and itunes and ibooks think they're signed in but actually don't connect. But
if I load a web page in Safari for example or use Facetime and iMessage there's
no problems at all connecting. I tried restoring the phone to defaults but the
problempersisist so I guess I just call Apple and see what goes on.

Re: IOS 9.x strangeness

2015-11-10 Thread Blee Blat
What was your resolution because it's annoying and damnably inconvenient.
Because it's weird it thinks its signed out but it's actually signed in or vice
versa I can't tell but it's not cool when I'm paying for services that aren't
working. I could call Apple but if it's a simple fix I'd rather take care of it
myself but I'm thinking it's on their end because it broke after an iOS 9
update and nothing I can think of will fix it. I know this router has some
weird problems with multicast but I think I fixed that but then the problem
persisted when I was on solid LTE and another router so I think maybe I got a
corrupted database somewhere but why a restore didn't fix it bothers me unless
I did the restore wrong. But I would've thought that erase all content and
settings and dropping the phone in recovery mode and telling it to set itself
up as new would be the hardest type of restore that is possible. And I sort of
don't want to waste some Apple tech's time just to tell me to do stuff I've
already done if it's user error. I usually don't have any issues. I also had
this Mac forget what drive to boot from. I shut it down cleanly then when I
turned it on this afternoon it booted into recovery mode. I've never seen that
before. Maybe technology doesn't like me lately I don't know but this is weird.

Ok, I have a few PDF's that I've just been using preview for. How is Adobe

I'm not a huge fan of Kindle because a lot of the books I'd like to read are

But iBooks on the phone is lovely if I could just get the app store to stop

not fix that but that's another thread it's only related to this one because I

Re: Calibrating The iPhone Battery

2015-10-29 Thread Blee Blat
Yeah, I'm not a scholar of batteries either but over time if you don't run the
battery down to 0% periodically you may find that the fuel gauge gets out of
sync. So you can have a situation for example when your battery charge says 0%
but the phone is still working, or you can have 30% charge and a powered off
device. So that's what your calibrating is the charge readout probably not the
battery itself.
I think you could get into situations too where if the gauge on the battery is
out of sync with the cells, it might attempt to charge an already filled
battery unnecessarily, but I think there is a few other checks to prevent that
from happening. I'm not sure what programmatically goes on in battery
management firmware.
It is probably slightly different for every firmware.
I don't calibrate batteries regularly but I had to do that once because the
phone and computer were showing weird battery numbers.
I had them both showing 100% charge after a full 8 hours of heavy use. So maybe
this clears up some things or if I'm misunderstanding something then we can
find some decent answers and not get confused. I think battery firmware changes
with every update too.
Maybe this is related to the random reboots and failed sign-ins to icloud
stuff after ios 9.1 updates, neither of which were fixed from a full restore
from itunes but I don't know. But phone is very unhappy at the moment.

Re: question about turning iCloud on for apple Music

2015-10-14 Thread Blee Blat
Yes, this is normal. What it's doing is making your music available for
streaming by converting it to Apple Music format.
If you had iTunes match it would leave the music in it's normal format. The
only difference is that Apple Music format has DRM whereas iTunes match would
get you standard AAC. You probably won't even notice the DRM either unless you
attempted to play the music on a device which didn't let you sign in with your
Apple ID. As far as I know all streaming services protect their music with DRM
so this seems pretty standard.

Re: Amazon Prime Music

2015-10-08 Thread Blee Blat
I'm glad you like your Echo. I know that Amazon music was reasonably sort of
accessible with iOS when I played with it but there was no way I found to get
the tunes to OS X since the app for OS X was completely inaccessible when I
tried it a bit ago. So I'm not sure how you'd get your library imported
properly on all devices. I'm sure someone else actually got it to work. I
played with it for 5 minutes and that was only because I wanted to buy an album
that was $72 on CD and not available on my friendly torrent search engine or in
iTunes. Getting the album out of Amazon's cloud to the computer was a pain. I
ended up downloading each track one at a time from the website. Thankfully it
was only 12 tracks or so. I have had no joy with the Kindle store either. Most
of the books I would like to read end up being free samples unless I want to
buy the hard cover. Also, I forgot my Amazon password, having only ever logged
into it once, and when I went to recover it they had a bunch of captcha pages
with no audio captcha and they were expecting me to call a toll free number for
help. So that's more information than you probably wanted but I hope it helps
you out and I hope that maybe you'll have a more joyful experience with Amazon
than the one here.

polite half-decent bug report even if it's for no other reason than to fill
their junk mail folder.

Re: Incredibly irritating problem with braille input on I O S

2015-10-08 Thread Blee Blat
I've been reading this thread and I'm trying this out but I have large hands
and long fingers and a 5s and I'm not sure how to hold the phone to comfortably
reach the dots. So it's clearly something you have to screw with for more than
30 seconds to get to work but I could see where it could be a really efficient
input method at least until they fix the other input lag issues. The default
keyboard is reliable but slow and I'd prefer this to dictation. So maybe I just
need to waste a few charge cycles beating on it until I figure out the
coordination?
I'm going to upgrade the phone at some point for the fatter battery and larger
screen and quicker processor but that still doesn't negate the question. It's
good of you to remind us that this is efficient. Not so sure about UEB but I
might talk to you off list about that as it's possible that one is user error
but it sure seems to have made a mess of this logic textbook lol
:)

Oh, ok, yes I was able to make it work similar to what you're describing. You

Yeah, it's just training fingers that takes a bit of time but I could see how
you could get really fast input with that. I type more than I braille but touch
typing doesn't really lend itself well to tiny devices.

Re: Braille Support in OS X

Yes, that's the biggest problem is no independent braille cursor and not enough
customizations. Also that would fix the cursor routing issues as well.

Re: Braille Support in OS X

2015-10-05 Thread Blee Blat
I don't find dots 7 and 8 hard to read with text I just don't understand why I
would need to know the position of the VoiceOver cursor without knowing the
positions of the system cursor. I think they should have separate braille and
speech cursors as well as the system cursor. The user should be able to select
which dot patterns represent what. This needs to be extremely customizable
because the user is going to want to read braille differently depending on
display size and reading ability and other things. Also something like BRLTTY's
skipping of blank windows and sliding windows features would be lovely for
small displays. BRLTTY will optionally remove white space and other screen
areas that are just blank and then try to fill as much of the display with
text as it possibly can. This is good for when you're just reading a document
like a book where you don't need to care about indentation or other formatting.
You can toggle all this stuff on and off as needed. I hope that made at least
some sense, but if not feel free to ask more questions.

Re: Best Way to Use Spotlight Search

2015-10-05 Thread Blee Blat
Yeah, you'd have to use grep to look inside files so it saves an extra
command. UNIX find will use the slocate and whatis databases as well for faster
searches. I don't know how those compare with other spotlight indexes. It seems
like a way to collect data more than help me find it and I'm usually fairly
organized but I should probably screw around with and see what's what.

Re: 10.11 and braille

2015-10-04 Thread Blee Blat
I have a display but I may be hitting different bugs than others so I wouldn't
mind a list either. I have noticed that cursor routing is useless because there
is no separate braille cursor or braille doesn't follow the system cursor it
just moves the voiceover cursor which isn't what should happen. There's no way
to tell if text is selected easily since dots 7 and 8 are used for the
voiceover cursor as well as the highlighting of text. I don't understand what
to do with these silly status cells at all. I turn them off on OS X and iOS
because I don't understand how their information is at all useful especially on
a small 18-cell display.
Braille input is also equally useless on iOS and OS X because I braille too
quickly and the driver appears to hang. I should also point out that I
frequently work with autocorrect and dictation turned off because I still get
input lag typing on qwerty as well but the braille translator makes input lag a
lot.
I'd sell this braille display to someone if I could find one for a reasonable
price that I could put under the laptop or keyborad since I don't like the
braille input function at all because it doesn't work at all in a useful way.
Also USB serial support is broken in OS X so that you cannot use your braillle
display in USB mode at least not with Refreshabraille even though the
documentation claims it works. Bluetooth frequently drops on both iOS and OS X
especially after sleep / wake so often the braille display will not connect at
all and I have to revert to speech. Braille also doesn't work until after the
user is logged in, nor does it work in recovery mode. There is no braille for
emoji either.
Some of this is probably user error because OS X and iOS probably handle
braille differently than BRLTTY which is what I used to use. I moved to OS X to
avoid Windows because I generally prefer UNIX shells and things and I thought
maybe Apple had better accessibility when I played with it and in general I'm
not unhappy with that decision. But it seems to me that the computer industry
in general is releasing poorly written software for all users and so I'm
thinking every OS is badly written and buggy so I'm giving Apple a pass on that
one. It seems people want things in this world that give the delusion of
working but don't actually work and that is ok if that's what people want. So I
expect it to be horribly broken because that's what sells and I'm surprised
that in general Apple tends to be less horribly broken than other companies but
I am sure it's a design decision since the focus seems to be on data mining and
tracking and accessibility just doesn't help them collect data or advertise so
it means nothing. And braille is the bottom of the stack when it comes to that.
I wrote Apple Accessibility telling them that I've got a lot of time and I
could learn their architecture and help with braille testing but I got a form
letter saying that they'd look into the bugs I reported so I left it at that.
But I would like to know how to get the most out of braille on either the phone
or the mac because I prefer not to use speech since it gets in the way of my
creative process, especially thanks to Apple Music and several meditation
apps being available on all devices. Don't take any of this as criticism or
negativity I'm willing to help but I don't know what's constructive. I'm also
betting that maybe I haven't explored something or don't fully understand some
features so I'd be willing to take this off list for extended conversation if
someone wants we could talk about how to get this stuff constructively fixed.
I think Apple is trying to do the right thing I'm just not sure how we can help
them.
Yes it's a small user group but it might get larger very quickly if somehow we
had easily accessible built-in working braille support to point people at.
Sorry if this is a bit long I have only given the most severe bugs I've
noticed. There's probably more I'm sure but I'm assuming the ones I encountered
were user error mostly but someone make a list of bugs and we can hack this
out. Thanks for reading and have fun times. I'll go away now unless there's a
reply.

Re: Best Way to Use Spotlight Search

2015-10-03 Thread Blee Blat
I'm with you. I don't understand why I would use Spotlight when I could easily
just use the UNIX find command from a terminal, or I know where my files. I've
turned off all the spotlight options and turned off dictation and Siri because
it gets things wrong pretty much all the time. I also turn off autocorrect and
predictive text because I can type fast enough and all the autocorrect does is
cause me to type the wrong word when I could've typed the right one without
that feature. Does anyone care to explain what are the use of all these new
features other than to making thinking superfluous? All this data monitoring
stuff just seems creepy. But maybe there is a use for it? Why would I want to
train the dictator and autocorrect if I can type it in just fine with a
reasonable keyboard?
None of this is meant as negativity I'm just wondering how to make use of
these fancy algorithms without the machine thinking for me and being creepy.
But it could be possibly just user error or user ignorance since I don't know
what the intent of these things is exactly?

Re: interesting observation with safari 9

2015-10-02 Thread Blee Blat
The only way I know of to back out of the beta program is to reinstall the Os
to stable. Once you've done that, go into system preferences > app store and
find the change button next to prerelease updates. Click on that and disable it
and then you won't see more beta updates. It will still list the previous
prerelease updates as being purchased but it will not autoupdate you to them
anymore. It's a bit of a pain so get your backup disk handy and lay in a good
supply of food and beverages as you're going to be there awhile.

Why even have code names at all? You're going to have to give the exact version
number at some point anyway, so what's wrong with, say 10.11, or 10.12? I'd
think this would be problematic since a lot of these names are not simple to
pronounce especially if your first language doesn't happen to be the same as
the language of the code name? When 10.10 came out I noticed several people who
use speech exclusively did not know how to spell Yosemite for example. Plus
it's better for consistency since iOS has no code names at all, just a version
number.

Re: My thoughts on the Apple Public Beta Program

2015-07-31 Thread Blee Blat
I will not be enrolling in future betas most likely for the simple reason that
although the beta program is good they ship developers different betas than the
public which makes no sense to me at all! Never mind that I still don't
understand why people are hesitant to discuss public beta software when it's
actually public already and everyone can use it. Sure the final releases may or
may not have all the features but still I don't get that restriction. Otherwise
it's a good service and I'm glad I can make a list of all the things I need to
turn off before I ruin a perfectly new phone's battery with these data tracking
features so I'll thank them for that. :)

Re: My music collection

2015-07-06 Thread Blee Blat
How did you go about removing the local music without removing it from your
library? I'd like to do similar here as music is my largest data chunk and
Apple Music has better quality versions of a lot of stuff that I had plus this
is obviously more convenient than trying to sync 300 GB of data between
devices. I also notice that we seem to have got sound quality improvements in
the latest music app on both iOS and OS X unless the ears are deceiving. So as
a result I find I'm just as likely to use the phone for music as the computer,
it's whatever device is handy for what I'm doing.

Re: My music collection

2015-07-06 Thread Blee Blat
Interesting. It uploaded custom albums just fine here. I was able to stream
several that aren't in Apple's collection. I'm not sure what tags it matches on
maybe yours weren't tagged acceptably. I have some unknown albums that are
improperly tagged that it won't stream but it uploaded them it just has no idea
what to do with them. So someone needs to figure out what's an acceptable
tagging rule for their algorithms. That is, what fields must be filled in for
it to let you play the music from all devices. I made an artist called Stuff
with albums called Stuff0 and Stuff1 for some albums whose tracks I'm too lazy
to look up titles for which aren't in the CD Database and those don't stream
correctly I think it doesn't like several tracks called Track01 and Track02 and
such.
