Arrogance is seldom a characteristic of Mensans. Insecurity is a more
common trait.
Dullness, like beauty, seems to be in the eye of the beholder. There are
many Special Interest Groups which are popular:

http://www.us.mensa.org/AM/Template.cfm?Section=SIG_ListTemplate=/customsource/SIGs-p.cfm

T: I think this is entirely bogus, since intelligence is such a fleeting
concept that is virtually impossible to define, not alone measure.

G: Many Mensans would agree with you, as would those (usually
psychologists) who study intelligence. The first intelligence tests were
created (over 100 years ago) for the purpose of identifying those persons
who should be put in an institution for the feeble minded. Then, during
WW-1, the army found it useful for identifying those who could be trained as
effective soldiers; especially artillerymen who had to calculate
trajectories. Currently IQ tests can quite accurately predict a persons
likelyhood of being successful in college. Mensans often define
intelligence as the ability to pass IQ tests.

T: The most common use of the word intelligent seems to occur when someone
who considers themselves intelligent refers to another person who thinks
similar to themselves. A third person, whose ideas are so advanced as to be
unintelligible to the first two, would probably be labeled stupid by them.

G: Not among most Mensans, which incidentally seems to be the reason those
with highly advanced (and seemingly unintelligible) ideas find happiness and
fulfillment in Mensa. In spite of their high intelligence (and often poor
social skills) they are accepted as ordinary members of Mensa, which is more
of a social group than anything else.
Note: I'm also a member of Densa, the society of the unintelligent; as are
a number of other Mensans. You may have noticed that both high and low
intelligence can exist together in the same person, depending on which
abilities you are measuring (such as fixing Mercedes; where I would probably
be ranked as a Densan. (o:] )

T: I've taken several IQ tests, and sometimes answered all of the
questions correct, placing me in the highest percentile the tests were
designed to measure. It's very easy for me to solve short abstract
logic problems even if they're fairly complicated, yet I have a short
attention span making it difficult for me to, say understand and solve
a complicated physics problem that takes days or weeks. Other people I
know can do such things very easily, even if they would get a lower IQ
score.

G: Short attention span is one symptom of ADD (Attention Deficit Disorder).
It's often correctible by taking the same drugs that are given to person
with full blown ADD or ADHD (Attention Deficit Hyperactive Disorder). A
surprising number of Mensans have been diagnosed with ADD. I know a number
of Mensans who had the same problem as yours; almost word for word and
corrected it by taking the drugs. I've often wondered if there is some sort
of connection between ADD and high intelligence.

T: Many of the people I would consider most intelligent have minds
that work in such an unusual way, it's highly unlikely that an IQ test
would demonstrate their unique mental abilities accurately.

*G: Basic IQ tests, such as the Wechsler-Belleview, aren't designed to
measure unique mental abilities. They supposedly measure a persons
intelligence broadly. Some researchers in the field of intelligence think
that there is no such thing as general intelligence; that testing should be
broken down into special types of intelligence which would even include the
kind of intelligence that makes athletic excellence possible.

T: Most intelligent thought (in my opinion) comes from thinking differently
and creatively to come up with ideas and solutions that would probably
not have been discovered by the type of thought that allows for rapid
and accurate solving of IQ test problems.

G: If you offer the same problem to a person with high intelligence and a
person with low intelligence, which of the two will be most likely to come
up with the best solution? General IQ tests are designed to rank people
according to their likelyhood of being able to solve problems in general. A
person good at solving a wide range of problems is supposedly more likely to
be able to solve specific problems. General IQ tests do this quite well in
predicting academic success.

T: I've come to the conclusion that areas of intelligence among people
are very diverse, and IQ measures a narrow, almost meaningless aspect
of it.

That's probably the best way.

I just wait for the video to cache, then search my HD for large files created
today. The one named something like HJUEYHGKK, in a directory named Cache, with
a timestamp two minutes ago, is the one I want, so I copy it to my video

the longest videos, and it does not seem to work with most other video sources.

Yes, I've got a new block. Someone from a Mercedes forum gave me one and I
shipped it here. It has been resleeved and the crank reconditioned. I have new
pistons I got a good deal on.

If there's not a used set lying around, my next best bet is to go to Metric
Motors which will sell me a balanced set ready to install. I have just about
everything else ready except for a timing chain, belt and thrust bearings.

I do need to replace the guide pin that goes through the front case. The 8mm
one that is about 4 long. The one I removed was bent and only hasabout two
good threads left. I'm lucky I was able to pull it out.

Doers anyone have one of these?

are released.

8.) With door panel loose, carefully lift up and towards the front to unhook

9.) After carefully removing the moisture shield (replace if damaged or

the two large phillips head screws.

Re: [MBZ] Fiat gets 35% stake in Chrysler

2009-01-20 Thread Tom Hargrave
As usual, the press is publishing rumors!

They've only entered into a preliminary, non-binding agreement. Here's the
official release from Bob Nardelli.

Dear Colleagues:

I’ve consistently promised that your leadership team would communicate fully
and directly to you regarding important business issues. Today, I have some
very important information to share with you regarding a positive new
development for Chrysler; one that will significantly enhance the long-term
viability of our great company.

In our continuing commitment to build a profitable enterprise for the
future, consistent with the viability plan we submitted to congress and with
the written and oral testimony I made on behalf of Chrysler, we are
announcing today that Cerberus, Chrysler LLC and Fiat S.p.A. have entered
into a preliminary non-binding agreement to establish a global strategic
alliance. Upon completion of a due diligence process and required approvals,
the agreement is expected to be completed as early as April. You can read
the external announcement on the Scoop.

This alliance provides significant strategic benefits that support our
viability and long-term competitiveness, including product and platform
sharing, global distribution, and operational and business efficiencies.
Fiat would also provide management services supporting Chrysler’s submission
of a viability plan to the U.S. Treasury as required. Fiat has been very
successful in executing its own restructuring over the past several years.

Under the agreement, Chrysler will have access to all Fiat group vehicle
platforms, which would complement our current product portfolio with
fuel-efficient, environmentally-friendly small cars and powertrain
technology. The alliance would greatly increase the global reach for our
three brands in markets outside of North America, and Fiat’s distribution
organization would provide Chrysler a strong partner to help build our
brand’s presence in important markets where we have little presence today.

Fiat would benefit from product and technology sharing as well, with access
to our vehicle platforms and our manufacturing capabilities in North
America. In addition, Chrysler would assist Fiat to bring their brands to
the U.S. market.

As a condition of the U.S. government loan agreement, all constituents will
be asked to contribute to Chrysler’s restructuring effort including:
lenders, employees, the UAW, dealers, suppliers and Chrysler Financial.
This partnership would adhere to the conditions of the U.S. government loan,
and help us provide a return on investment for the American taxpayer by
securing the long-term viability of Chrysler brands in the marketplace. The
alliance would help sustain Chrysler’s product development, manufacturing,
and sales operations here in the U.S which further supports our viability
plan, and preserves American jobs. Our partners at the UAW have announced
their endorsement of the proposed alliance.

Along with the rest of the leadership team, I am aware of your desire and
need to learn as soon as possible how the alliance will affect you
personally. The agreement is just the first step, and we intend to keep you
informed of key developments on an ongoing basis.

You have brought great pride to the Company through your tireless efforts to
make Chrysler successful. Please continue to approach the important work you
do with the same passion and commitment today and throughout the weeks ahead
as we work together with all our constituents to implement our viability
plan, and pursue this exciting new alliance.

Bob

to get an initial 35% stake in struggling U.S. carmaker Chrysler in exchange

for its technological expertise, distribution network and management
services.
Chrysler said the alliance, a key element of its viability plan, will
provide it with access to competitive, fuel efficient vehicle platforms,
powertrain and components to be manufactured at Chrysler sites. Fiat will
also lend its distribution networks in key growth markets and provide
management services supporting Chrysler's submission of a viability plan
to the U.S. Treasury as required.snip

Re: [MBZ] OT Windows 7

2009-01-20 Thread MG
Ed, I just got a Western Digital 1 terabyte My Book Essential a few
weeks ago. It is an external USB 2. I used it to back up my old laptop
which is USB 1. So it works on both 1 and 2 though it is a lot faster on
2. Best Buy had them on sale a bit ago and may still. I think it was
$129. Not bad for what it can hold and if you need one to be USB and
transportable.

I don't know about the Mac part but if the Mac uses the Fat32 or NTFS
then it should be able to read and write to this disk. It comes
formatted in Fat32 but reformatting in XP wasn't a big deal and didn't
take long. The video, picture and Mp3 stuff are all just files and
transfered as files and shouldn't be hardware dependent on a hard drive.
I didn't use a backup program so I had no problems that way. You
probably won't either unless you are going to use a backup program and
it for some reason won't read or write those files, or if the Mac uses a
different file system. Others will probably know more about that. I
haven't been back to Apple since my II+ days. Probably should revisit it
but PCs seem to be a bit less expensive then similarly equipped Apples.

I just wait for the video to cache, then search my HD for large files
created today. The one named something like HJUEYHGKK, in a directory named
Cache, with a timestamp two minutes ago, is the one I want, so I copy it to
my video directory and name it as a FLV file. This usually works on Youtube,

Re: [MBZ] Tires

2009-01-20 Thread MG
I think that warranty problem may be a manager problem. The tires on the
Tacoma now are Michelins that were on sale real cheap at Wallymart about
a year ago so I bought them. Just recently (2-3months ago) ran over
something that put a big hole in one, my fault, I saw it coming but
ignored it. I took it in to a totally different Wally and they fixed it
without a problem. They wanted to replace it though with a different
Michelin as they didn't have that model anymore. I told them to patch
it. They said it may not hold and if it doesn't then bring it back and
they will replace it. All done free in less then one hour while I
waited. So far I haven't had to put air in and it hasn't lost more then
a couple of pounds. I'm happy with both the tires and Wally.

And the warranty is worthless unless you go back to Cheap Sam.

One of the tires I bought from a walmart a couple of years ago
because i got caught in a lake effect blizzard and was desperate,
slipped a belt. last summer. The tire manager at walmart refused to
warrant the tire. He had some cockamamie excuse that it was my fault
the tire was a POS. I can't recommend buying tires from wallyland or
Cheap Sams. I got caught in the warranty trap at sams for
years. The tires would always fail, so I was stuck going back to
Cheapo Sam. When I bought my tires from Eurotire, when they were in
business, I never had a failure. I mostly bought Contis, but had
some Fulda and one set of Frenchy tires. When I had to go back to US
made tires, at least one out of two will fail before they are worn
out. I've had the same experience with overpriced Michelins too. I
have never had a conti fail. Buying tires is a crapshoot at best.

If you can swing it, get the new ones -- there are several revisions to the
rods for the 603, and the latest ones are significantly heavier than the
originals. Avoid the bent rod syndrom (it happens on the 3.0L too, just not
anywhere as often as the 3.5L).

That way your grandkids will still be driving it.\

You'd be better off looking for a decent condition 603 -- the only
rods available are a complete set of the latest version, and they are
NOT inexpensive.

I assume you found a new block -- there is no way I'd use one that

I don't know of a way to convert flash to anything useable but the place to

124, 126 (and later I assume) door panels have hooks, and are removed
by bumping them up. As others have said, on the 126, if you pry out,
you break the hooks and then are in trouble. Sometimes you have to
bump really hard for a long time to get them loose. The armrest is
held by hooks also. (unless it was like one of my cars where the PO
had broken the armrest hooks, and I used long drywall screws to
attach the armrest again.)

Best to move slowly in this area until one knows how things are attached...

Are you real sure about step 7? It has been a while since I did this too but
it seem to remember prying out on the bottom panel of my '81 SD and broke
some stuff on my door panel. Manual page 72-100 only says unscrew screw at

Pull door lining in upward direction and remove...then... Note says...

Re: [MBZ] Hello - Need connecting rods - OM603 - 300SDL

2009-01-20 Thread Michael LaFleur
Yes, I've noticed that they have been revised. At least twice as I see in the
FSM. The ones that came out of the engine 1 oiling bore in the wrist pin
bushing.

I'm going to go ahead with the ones from Metric Motors. They've been RR'd and
have new bushings installed. They also have 2 oiling holes for the wrist pin.

These con-rods are all I need to finish this build. Everything else I have or
is on order except for fluids.

You'd be better off looking for a decent condition 603 -- the only
rods available are a complete set of the latest version, and they are
NOT inexpensive.

I assume you found a new block -- there is no way I'd use one that
had a rod tossed in it.

 holes in the block.
Since then, I acquired parts to restore the car and now I'm ready

I've found that the previous builder of the engine in this car used
end caps from different connecting rods when putting it together.

Anyway, the parts I have don't match and I am in need of 6
 connecting rods for my OM603.961.

Fiat earned their bad reputation honestly in the USA, but they've come
a long way since. Chrysler desperately needs a new small FWD platform
to replace the Neon/Caliber/Girl-Jeep-of-the-Week. If this happens,
I'd say it gives them a definite leg up on GM (which has only the
Cobalt and Aveo crapboxes) as far as having something to sell when gas
prices go back up. I'd put even money on them with Ford to survive
into 2010, in fact.

How many times have I heard members say: I would have joined a long time
ago but I was convinced I didn't qualify.
Even after some have been members for years they will tell you that the
testing department made a mistake and that

there is no way they are actually qualified to be in Mensa.

Of course, it's certain I'm not qualified to be in Mensa. What happened
was that my application was mailed in shortly after Mensa was computerized,
everyone in the testing department was still learning how to operate the
computers, and someone must have mistakenly hit the approved key instead of
the rejected key.

In my case it took a great deal of courage and a half pint of Bacardi Rum to
mail in the application. That seems to be the key; overcoming the
possibility of ones application not being approved.

I will have a set eventually, but it could be a while before I get
around to it. Got a SDL with a bad head and I think the cylinders are
worn out, so Im going to drop another engine in it. When I get the old
one out I will probably pull the rods out, but like I say, it could be a
long time before I do it.

Michael LaFleur wrote:

Yes, I've got a new block. Someone from a Mercedes forum gave me one and I
shipped it here. It has been resleeved and the crank reconditioned. I have new

If there's not a used set lying around, my next best bet is to go to Metric
Motors which will sell me a balanced set ready to install. I have just about
everything else ready except for a timing chain, belt and thrust bearings.

I do need to replace the guide pin that goes through the front case. The 8mm one
that is about 4 long. The one I removed was bent and only hasabout two good
threads left. I'm lucky I was able to pull it out.

Doers anyone have one of these?

They are different. The center to center dimensions for the bores are:

149.0mm for the 3.0
145.0mm for the 3.5

Are the new rods the same for 3.0 and 3.5, or are they different? I
would assume different

Peter Frederick wrote:
If you can swing it, get the new ones -- there are several revisions to the
rods for the 603, and the latest ones are significantly heavier than the

anywhere as often as the 3.5L).

2009-01-20 Thread Michael LaFleur
I went and ordered the set from Metric. I think I'll be happy with then,
although it really hurt to pay for them. :-)

The are the third version (with 2 oiling holes for wrist pin) that first cam
out in 9/88.
They have been reconditioned with new bushings and have been balanced. I just
need to put them in.

There is one more thing I need that I keep forgetting about.

I need the 4 inch long 8mm diameter guide rail pin that goes through the head.
The one I have is bent and cracked at the end.

I have
new pistons I got a good deal on.

Have you checked with Rusty? I would think he could get them cheaper
than Metric.

I'm going to go ahead with the ones from Metric Motors. They've been RR'd and
have new bushings installed. They also have 2 oiling holes for the wrist pin.

These con-rods are all I need to finish this build. Everything else I have or

1969 Mercedes 220D diesel 4-speed.
Bought as a project but have lost interest. Has four new tires. Rebuilt
head and starter. Needs to have vacuum pump rebuilt and some other work.
Runs good on Biodiesel. Can also run on used cooking oil. I have many
hundreds more in the car than I am selling it for. I have too many
vehicles so this one needs to go.

[MBZ] OT Audacity recording

2009-01-20 Thread Loren Faeth

OK, Youse guys recommended Audacity.

I think I was successful to record from a microphone with it. At
least there are lots of squiggles on the chart that scrolls across.

It won't let me save what I apparently have. The Save is grayed out
as are a lot of other things on the various menus. I tried to
highlight the recording , but that didn't seem to make the save as
show up. I have tried lots of things, but can't get it to save. I
don't really want to loose the recording. The audacity help is
helpless in this case. What am I missing?

1969 Mercedes 220D diesel 4-speed.
Bought as a project but have lost interest. Has four new tires. Rebuilt
head and starter. Needs to have vacuum pump rebuilt and some other work.
Runs good on Biodiesel. Can also run on used cooking oil. I have many
hundreds more in the car than I am selling it for. I have too many
vehicles so this one needs to go.
