Oldest son’s 1998 S420 needed a right front caliper, as one of the pistons
had stuck in it.

Replaced the caliper and did brakes across the front axle with oldest son
doing the work while I supervised (and assisted as necessary.) Took all
of maybe 45 minutes. This is the second time he’s done brakes on a car,
so he’s becoming proficient with it. Showed him how to bleed brakes with
a MityVac and siphon jar, too.

Tomorrow I plan on doing the fuel filter on the 94 S420, as I keep
forgetting about it when I have the car. I may take a swipe at the close
assist system, as it’s a bit hinky.

Re: [MBZ] OT: Practical solar application

2015-09-06 Thread Greg Fiorentino via Mercedes
If you want to go solar...I just did a solar install on the motor home. I
put 2 100W panels on the roof, an MPPT controller (so I could wire the
panels in series and have the wiring handle the higher voltage more
efficiently) and 2 Group 27 deep cycle batteries wired in parallel. The
system works great. The MH already had a 1600W inverter which I use very
little.

Total cost for all components was about $750. I spent more on the panels to
get flexible ones that I could tape with 3M VHB tape to the curved
fiberglass roof. Rigid panels would cost about $50-100 less IIRC.

The way to go is to figure out what your daily amperage usage would be.
Battery capacity should be at least twice that amount, and solar input
should obviously be enough to exceed usage.

I agree with others that the heat requirement likely would overwhelm the
capabilities of a solar system.

I would like to electrify my shed in the back 40 in order to provide 1)

I might also want to recharge batteries for a B&D trimmer, although this is
a lesser priority.

There is a sunny spot where I could erect a solar panel, about 15' from the
edge of the building.

Anybody out there work with practical solar applications?

Zero auto rotation capacity with that design.. you likely notice his panic
when he climbed to about 20 ft altitude for a moment...

Propeller blade tip turbulence losses on that design have to account for
gigantic energy loss. The inclusion of a simple duct around each propeller
would increase thrust, reduce noise, and extend range... I believe..

Won't be flying it myself... in any case..

The stability and maneuverability of these things requires that they be
controllable rapidly, which can be done with an electric motor. It would
be interesting to see an analysis of putting a motor/generator on the
thing, with some batteries for load balancing (is that the right term?),
sorta like a diesel locomotive (but it doesn't have batteries), and see
what the size and duration tradeoffs would be like. They are unlike an

You can't go wrong by pre-treating the screws with penetrating oil. You will
also want a good assortment of extensions to position the ratchet handle where
you can reach it for the topside screws. Watch for possible interference when
you jack the engine and use a block of wood to protect the oil pan. It only
needs to lift enough to get the now mount in place. On re-assembly, the last

The W126 chassis is a little different from the W140, but not much.

I can’t recall if the lower bolts are regular 13mm heads or if they had socket
head cap screws like the W123 - I’m sure someone here knows. Definitely do
one side at a time - it makes it a lot easier to align things.

The W126 is pretty much like this:

1.) Remove the lower bolts (2 -13mm or 5mm socket head cap screws)

2.) Remove the upper bolt (17mm)

3.) Release fan shroud - does not have to be removed.

4.) Place jack with block of wood under oil pan and lift the engine gently.
You’ll see the engine stop moving after a few good pumps.

5.) Get back underneath the car and remove the mount. Make note of the
orientation. Don’t forget the heat shield if there is one.

6.) Get the new mount in position and place heat shield on top, making note
of the tank that sticks out and the hole it indexes into the heat shield.

7.) Place the top mount bolt back in the engine support. It won’t line up yet.

8.) Carefully lower the engine so the engine support is touching the top of the
mount. Get the top bolt started. You may have to move the engine around a
little bit to get it to line up. Be sure not to cross thread the bolt.

9.) Once the top bolt is in place and started, lower the jack completely.

10.) Try the lower bolts. One may not line up. You can use a flat bladed
screwdriver to move the mount around to get the remaining bolt lined up.
Don’t cross thread these - it’s easy to do (don’t ask me how I know this.)

11.) Tighten all three bolts. Move on to the other side.

It’s one of those brute force sorts of jobs. Takes some “goomph” but not a lot
of finesse. Be sure to buy genuine MB or Lemforder mounts. Anything else
will collapse in a year.

Maybe saying an old tire should not be used is valid after all.

Where in England? #1 grandson just spent 5 days or so with girlfriend and
her family in Stamford, UK. 'He's back in Paris now.

Tell us about St. Swithin.

BTW, my 7 greats grandfather, Mathew Strickland, immigrated from Cumbria,
England, to Isle of Wight Co., Virginia, directly across the James river
from Jamestown, in 1680; 'came ashore at Biltmore, MD.
