[MBZ] Corona Virus and the price of Diesel

2020-01-29 Thread Andrew Strasfogel via Mercedes
Will the price at the pump go down?

ENERGY MARKETSCoronavirus lockdown is even more bad news for dieselPublished:
Wednesday, January 29, 2020

Add a severe global pathogen to the list of bad news for diesel.

Two metrics for the industrial fuel that traders watch closely — its
premium against crude, and a gauge of supply and demand — have collapsed
this year. For the most part, the rout has been about weaker-than-expected
buying from the shipping industry and a mild winter. The novel coronavirus
in China, though, has exacerbated the slide because it's meant a clampdown
on travel that's negative for fuel demand, and a weakening of investor
sentiment across assets.

The lockdown of cities in China likely means weaker demand for diesel, said
Olivier Jakob, the managing director of Petromatrix GmbH in Zug,
Switzerland. The margin, or crack, for jet fuel, has also been adversely
affected. Both fuels are known as distillates.

"The impact of coronavirus translates into global pressure on distillate
cracks and the prices," Jakob said.

Oil refiners were making $9.83 a barrel from turning crude oil into diesel
on Monday, the lowest in almost two years, ICE Futures Europe data show.
Late last year, the same spread stood at about $15. Traders are paying
about $1.75 a ton less for diesel in February than for March, compared to a
$3 premium late last year.

There's similar weakness in the jet fuel market. The two products are
closely related. Profits for producing jet fuel in Asia fell to the lowest
in nearly four years after a spate of travel restrictions and flight
cancellations.

"Slowing air traffic has clearly dented Chinese jet fuel demand over recent
days," RBC Capital Markets analysts including Michael Tran said in a Jan.
27 research note. Jet fuel has been the firmest part of China's oil demand
growth in recent years, averaging about 11% a year, according to Tran.

The fuels are getting hit across the globe. Diesel margins in New York sank
to an 18-month low Monday, with concerns about the virus exacerbating the
impact of a mild winter that already curtailed demand.

"There's very little good news when it comes to the middle distillate part
of the barrel," said Steve Sawyer, director of refining at FGE, an energy
consultancy.

Looking forward, planned work at refineries in the Middle East — a region
that sends a lot of middle distillate to Europe — should provide some
support, he said. That will be followed by seasonal maintenance in the U.S.
and Europe. *— Jack Wittels, Bloomberg*

Re: [MBZ] 124 rear subframe

2020-01-29 Thread Curley McLain via Mercedes
I'd never think of having a 124 rear subframe out and not install new
subframe bushings.   I just took it out to Eddies and let them press the
old out and new in.

The first time I  worked on a 124 rear suspension, it was squirrelly.  I
replaced the bad links.   Still squirrelly.   After a while, I replaced
all the links and the wheel carrier bushings.   Still squirrelly. Then i
changed the subframe mounts.   what a difference!   Since then I change
the subframe mounts, then worry about the rest.  but the other times
I've done it one side at a time without taking the subframe out.    A
good 124 is like riding on rails.

Re: [MBZ] 97 E300

2020-01-29 Thread Floyd Thursby via Mercedes
She told me they did the conversion out west somewhere, Oregon or
Washington if I recall.  No rust on it, body was good, interior was good
though it had sheepskins on the front seats so I didn't pull those
back.  It really just needs and engine transplant and be good to go
after removing all the veggie nonsense.  This is not a turbo engine.

She had a new front bumper in the garage too she was gonna throw in.  I
could use that on the smashed $500E300.  Hubbie packed on her and moved
to Arkiesaw and took the title which he can't find now.  Her boy at CCU
had the key for some reason and she texted him to send it back.  Would
need that to move it, it's in one of those new Nexton vinyl villages
with an alley in back of the house/garage.

Is this a true statement: "under the hood is the 3.2 Liter inline
6-cylinder that is one of the longest lasting engines Mercedes Benz ever

2020-01-29 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
I don’t think the W124 cabrios will ever attain significant values. There
aren’t that many of them and they’re sort of weird as far as styling and looks.
I’m not criticizing, I just don’t think they’re unique or good looking enough
to ever command big bucks.

Type has high levels of antimony and tin, which makes it more valuable to
bullet casters, since those are more expensive elements and are needed for
achieving an alloy of correct hardness for modern firearms. OTOH, pure lead is
required for older black-powder firearms.

I’m curious - is there more of a market for the type as just lead scrap or as

Re: [MBZ] Clean '94 E320 cabriolet on BAT

2020-01-29 Thread Curley McLain via Mercedes
well, from 1970 or before, until about 20 years ago when the 240D and
123 300Ds started to age out, ANY running Mercedes Diesel that was not
rusted away or crunched was worth at least $5000 on the private sale
market.    The glut of 81-84 Diesels, purchased after the second "oel
crisis" came on the market about 2000.    I paid $5k for the 81 in late
98.  Had I waited a year or 2, I could have bought one for $1500...
The glut is gone now.   Unfortunately cars produced 15-20 years ago are
electronic toys, and because of the unavailability and high cost of
electronics, these cars will never be valuable after they leave the
stealer lot.

In 1972, I paid $4000 for the 200D, and thought i had a real deal.
Turned out I overpaid, but that's another story.

Sold new for $80 k and now lucky if it reaches $20K. This depreciation is
shocking for those of us taught the party line that Mercedes "hold their
value". Even the St. Christopher medal couldn't prevent such a sharp
decline, although it did prevent serious accidents...

When will the curve flatten and head back up? Will this non-classic
designed cabriolet ever attain its original sticker price? Will
silver/gray become chic in the year 2050?

The real measure of "does it require a CDL" is the "C" -
commercial. If you are not driving commercially as defined by the
FMCSR (Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations) then a CDL is not
required. Even for a truck and trailer like Craig's!

[MBZ] Corona Virus and the price of diesel

2020-01-29 Thread Rick Hawkins Java Letterpress Cycles Photon via Mercedes
Folks

Last Thursday night I rented a Penske 2015 Freightliner 26 foot straight truck.
I was going to rent the same truck from Enterprise, cheaper I think, but they
wouldn’t take my paypal MasterCard also debit card (or cash)! So I went to
Penske.

So I loaded up my dog, Precious and a bunch of equipment moving crap and a
coffee camp stove and a cot and sleeping bag.

We drove up to Charlotte, NC and got there about 1 am. It was a pretty nice
truck with air brakes and 225k miles which seemed a lot for 5 years old. It
drove like a new truck and was really not all that noisy. The radio barely
worked.

We camped in the 37f and stayed warm with the help of some moving blankets on
top of the sleeping bag.

After our coffee, we loaded about 5 letterpresses and an Elrod machine and
probably 1000 lbs of lead $2 a lb for bullets or type. And some type. I
guess we had probably had close to 10k load.

We also stopped at ft mill, SC and looked at some more junk which I will
probably get too.

On the way home to Tybee, Friday night we stopped south of Columbia and bought
a ton of diesel for $1.68/ gal. That freightliner takes about a gallon every 8
or 9 miles.

I was surprised to get that truck as a non CDL renter. Due to the air brakes I
think it is a CDL truck. I let my CDL lapse years ago when they started
requiring medical etc ... I shouldn’t have.

I only saw one weigh station which was closed. I 95 north of Savannah,
northbound REALLY SUCKS it is horribly rough in the right lane ... I did
some left lane riding just to keep some teeth.

If you want to see photos and folly come of my crazy, you can see at Instagram
where I am printerrickthe or on Facebook

Re: [MBZ] Corona Virus and the price of Diesel

2020-01-29 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
No. I started buying in the early 90s. I think it was in the high teens when I
started. It’s split at least three times since then, too (2/1, 2/1, 7/1) I
think. When it was in the dumper in the early 2000s I vacuumed up all I could
afford.

I also did it all in IRAs or similar instruments, so I won’t get dinged on
capital gains as I cash out, but I will be paying taxes on it at a higher rate
than at the time I acquired a lot of it. Meh.

A $100 investment in AAPL in the early 2000s would net about 130%-140% gain
today in round numbers, I believe.

As I like to say, “Thank you, Steve!”

Rick,

I’m curious - is there more of a market for the type as just lead scrap or as

Re: [MBZ] 97 E300

2020-01-29 Thread Andrew Strasfogel via Mercedes
My best friend passed away unexpectedly just after Xmas, leaving his
affairs in flux. His brother drove down to sort things out in his condo.
First thing he learned was that both sets of car keys and the brother's
wallet were MIA. We have no idea where they went - the front door was
always unlocked so it could have been anyone (23rd floor in a secure
building)

Mercedes content: The dealer quickly provided a replacement key for the
2008 E55 AMG sedan (25 k miles). The key worked so that was settled.

The BMW dealer was very unhelpful in getting the 2005 station wagon up and
running. After a week they grudgingly sold the brother a replacement key,
which opened the door but would not start the ca (the car was running
perfectly previously). They refused to provide a tech to make a house call
or even to talk through the issues, so the car is being towed to the
dealership.

[MBZ] Lead and CDL

2020-01-29 Thread Rick Hawkins Java Letterpress Cycles Photon via Mercedes
Andrew, CDL is commercial as in semi truck license and also requires a medical

Dan, the type lead we keep as type ... there is no great market for type so I
hoard it up to use when I print something which I do sometimes

As for the Linotype lead it sells for at least $2 a lb on ebay ... it is this
alloy

https://www.rotometals.com/linotype-alloy-alloy-5-pounds-4-tin-12-antimony-and-84-lead/

They are selling it for $4 lb

Maybe price is up

I’ll sell it to you guys too

Good for your Linotype or Ludlow machine or for your bullet mold

2020-01-29 Thread Curley McLain via Mercedes
We had a guy close by who rented Budget.   He would always cut a better
deal than you can get online.  I've driven straight trucks since I was
about 12, and on the road since 16.  The nicest was the 95?
international with DT 466E, 6 spd, air ride and Bostrom air ride seat.
It had 300K miles on it when we got it and was like new.   On a smooth
road, it was better than an MB.   It would get 10 mpg.   First time I
rented a 26' budget it was a Jimmy.  I asked the guy if it could get
10.  He said no, 8 or maybe 9. I drove it over 1000 miles, kept it to 60
and got 10.   What I had found out with the IH was that over 60, the
mileage goes down a lot, and fast.  The last one, I drove 3000 miles and
got 10, but I don't remember what it was.  I know it was not a Jimmy.
I think it was IH with the v8 they used to call 444.   I got 10 with it
also.

Folks

Last Thursday night I rented a Penske 2015 Freightliner 26 foot
straight truck. I was going to rent the same truck from Enterprise,
cheaper I think, but they wouldn’t take my paypal MasterCard also
debit card (or cash)! So I went to Penske.

So I loaded up my dog, Precious and a bunch of equipment moving crap
and a coffee camp stove and a cot and sleeping bag.

We drove up to Charlotte, NC and got there about 1 am. It was a pretty
nice truck with air brakes and 225k miles which seemed a lot for 5
years old. It drove like a new truck and was really not all that
noisy. The radio barely worked.

We camped in the 37f and stayed warm with the help of some moving
blankets on top of the sleeping bag.

After our coffee, we loaded about 5 letterpresses and an Elrod machine
and probably 1000 lbs of lead $2 a lb for bullets or type. And
some type. I guess we had probably had close to 10k load.

We also stopped at ft mill, SC and looked at some more junk which I
will probably get too.

On the way home to Tybee, Friday night we stopped south of Columbia
and bought a ton of diesel for $1.68/ gal. That freightliner takes
about a gallon every 8 or 9 miles.

I was surprised to get that truck as a non CDL renter. Due to the air
brakes I think it is a CDL truck. I let my CDL lapse years ago when
they started requiring medical etc ... I shouldn’t have.

I only saw one weigh station which was closed. I 95 north of Savannah,
northbound REALLY SUCKS it is horribly rough in the right lane
... I did some left lane riding just to keep some teeth.

2020-01-29 Thread Curley McLain via Mercedes
I was told under 26,000 GVW, you didn't need CDL, but anything over
26,000 lb you had to have one.  Exception for camper trailers and motor
homes (and school buses).   But if it looked like a commercial truck
you'd better have a CDL and follow the rules.   Has this changed or was
I told wrong?

Regardless of the rules, 20 yrs ago, if it looked like a truck, the
Bluejackets would give you a ticket (over 26,000 GVW)   It was up to you
to spend the time and money to try to convince a judge the bluejacket
was wrong.

Air suspension makes a _huge_ difference on a vehicle with less
than max load as the spring constant can change to match the
weight.

An air ride seat makes a _big_ difference. And Bostrom makes a
good one!

A few more ratios in the transmission would help - especially if
there are hills and mountains.

Yeah, its legal, but it's often up to you to prove in court, that you
are innocent, and it is legal.

fmiser via Mercedes

I believe there are some motor homes with air brakes, and those
don't need a CDL or even any training I believe.

Correct. And if you own the vehicle, and are hauling stuff you
own and it doesn't involve business, then you shouldn't need a
CDL. But it can be a grey area. The folks delivering RVs need a
CDL, but the owner doesn't. If you have a 53ft horse trailer
behind a Peterbilt 389 and you own the horses and are taking them
to some place for you to ride them, you should not need a CDL.
But it could vary by state and time - and this is NOT LEGAL
ADVICE! [grin]

Agreed! 123s look better. 124s don't look bad, they just look more
modern.  The modern look started with the W126.  No other car designed
in the 70s from any maker has the modern look.   126 and 124s still look
'in" style.  I'd rather drive a 126 or 123 for long distances, but a 124
is ok.   124s remind me of the Karmann Ghia, where you left foot was
nearly in front of your right hip.

I don't know if 124 Diesels will ever go up that much, but the floptops
will, and AMG and E420 up might.

After the 123's peak, then 124's will go up-but I don't think they are as

YMMV

Coronavirus was created by toada.   It infected all toadas and then
infected all toada drivers.

I am of an age where I associate corona with toada.  Crown, corona,
corolla

Yes, I know about the Meh he can bier   but in the US of A, the
trademark first belonged to toada.

no, and AFIK, the 26' rentals are air over hydraulic.  Those do not
require air cert., but do require air obviously, or a LOT of muscle if
the air fails.   On air, the air holds the brakes OFF, and brakes are
applied my modulating lower pressures of air.

For air over hydraulic, in place of a vacuum booster, there is an air
booster.   all road vehicles now are vacuum assist hydraulic, air over
hydraulic, or air.

CDL does not require air brakes.   You can drive a pickup and need a CDL.

I believe there are some motor homes with air brakes, and those don't
need a CDL or even any training I believe.

I believe he means a truck with air brakes that would, if used
commercially, require a CDL license to drive.

No. Full air brakes have some chambers that are "parking brakes",
or "spring brakes". With air pressure of at least 60 PSI, the
spring is forced back and the brakes are "off". Conversely, if
the air pressure drops below 60 PSI the spring brakes apply and
the truck stops. Safety.

The service brakes use air pressure stored in a tank. Typically
the compressor is set to keep the pressure between 100-120 PSI.

The brake pedal (sometimes called "trolley bar, trolley valve,
johnson bar" - that is, hand applied trailer brakes lever) supply
air pressure to apply the brakes. To speed up the action, the
trailer has a supply of air near the wheels and the brake pedal
doesn't feed the brake chambers but feeds a valve that controls
the tank-to-chamber flow. Thus from the tractor it is "low
current" and so it happens much faster.

Anyway, the compressor stores at least 100 PSI air to provide
energy to the brake chambers. Typical chamber is a "type 30"
which has 30 sq. inch of piston area. At 100 PSI that is 3,000 lb
of force on the brake rod.

I have not ever worked on air-over-hydraulic brakes, only vacuum
boost, hydroboost, and full on air brakes. Oh, and mechanical.

ADVICE! [grin]

I seem to recall that Class A recreational motor coaches required some
endorsements comparable to those of a CDL (unibody 10 meter long) vs Class C (a
box truck or RV on a Van/pickup frame). There is also a requirement for CDL to
operate airport vans, having the responsibility of hauling civilians for pay.
Not sure it applies to Town Car drivers. Not inclusive of Uber or Lyft sorts

We all agree the newer than w124 mercedes are not worthy of a hold position,
nor will they be found in operable condition to qualify for classic/vintage
licensing.

I really miss owning cars that are not bogged down with toys, blinking lights,
more computing power than an old Packard Bell from Costco, and have nanny
features which make it impossible to repair/replace the interior. Too much
explosive power with all those air bags to bother fixing headliners, A pillars
and such. Let alone be able to swing a wrench under the hood without having an
old Cray on hand to decipher codes and re-anable functionality.

Welcome to the age of automotive appliances. And the kids have no interest or
desire to acquaint themselves with the cars from the past 25 years, nor
anything older, as those vehicles are killing Greta Thunderbird fortified whine.

a CDL can be required for some activities with any car or light truck.
However, just as you are likely to get a ticket for driving a heavy
truck when a CDL is technically not required, it is also not likely that
johnny law will bother you in a car or light truck, unless something on
the vehicle identifies it as a commercial vehicle, other than work
trucks.  Vans that haul RR employees around would require a CDL and
could be checked by DOT enforcement or Johnny Law.

Taxi drivers, bus drivers, school bus drivers, etc and hired help who
drive a truck or car used to be required to have a chauffeurs license
before the CDL law.   The feds usurped state laws and the 10th amendment
by requiring the CDL.

I used to have Chauffeur's license, but because of the bookkeeping
requirements, never wanted CDL very bad.  It changed about 1990.

Re: [MBZ] 97 E300

2020-01-29 Thread Clay via Mercedes
Ah,

Siding of choice in ANC seems to be T1-11. They slap the homes together during
the summer. No joke. From June to September it is a mad scramble to toss up
as many of the turds as possible. Last summer may have been a bit off, as
there was much post earthquake repair going on, but the houses sprout up out of
cut rate california house plan catalogues and there seem to be no changes made
in specifications to account for being in the sub arctic. On slab, at grade,
2x4 framing, lowest cost options you could scrounge from Home Despot. Maybe
you get a better grade of appliance to make up for the snap together flooring,
vacu-form counters, and bargain plumbing fixtures.

I would posit that if you really want a decent home up here, you begin mapping
the whole thing out two or three years in advance. Do extensive geotech work
while you get the wish list hashed out. Second year is all ground work,
excavation, connections to power, water, sewer and building the
basement/foundation work with any solar/back up energy/geothermal installation.
Maybe a person puts main floor trusses and basic earthquake
securement/strapping. Nail down all the product required to finish the project
and have it on the first barge up for the season so it is in place as soon as
the weather permits framing to begin. Have one of the vinyl sheeted storage
structures on site to hold it so there is no waiting around.

SWMBA still thinks in terms of living in the real USA. Figures she can just go
to the local big box and have something delivered in a few days. Turns out her
washing machine will take a month to come up. Standard LG front loader, but
there was only one of that model in ANC and it was black (racist). She has
been looking at replacement for the fireplace hearth since April. Looks like
she will have to pay to ship a whole 8x10 slab of granite up, then she only
needs pay for the section she uses. At three times the sqft rate of down south.

It is not the miners who get rich, it is the folks servicing the miners making
millions.
