I want my next house to be designed and built ICF. I like the idea of the
structure being capable of withstanding multitude of insults and lasting for
more than a handful score years.

Re: [MBZ] New toy

2021-04-30 Thread Curt Raymond via Mercedes
I don't. I'm probably going to end up renting a UHaul trailer. The tractor
supposedly weighs in around 3,000#, with the loader I figure it might be around
4,000. UHaul says you're good to 4600 and I figure that'll have a safety factor
built in. My truck doesn't have a brake controller so UHaul trailers with their
surge brakes are good for me.

I casually mentioned to my buddy that I might make a quick trip up next weekend
just to deliver the tractor. We got as far as him suggesting he might be
interested in the ride. He's got a 3/4 ton truck and a trailer. I give about
60% odds he'll cave in and we'll go.

I've never had to warranty a tool at Harbor Freight. I now own 2 HF ratchets
and as near as I can tell they're at least as good as good as Craftsman. I
haven't had an opportunity to really beat on one but they work pretty good.
I've warrantied several Craftsman ratchets and my 1/2" one has decided it
doesn't want to ratchet anymore, I think it probably just needs to be cleaned
and re-greased. I should do that before it breaks a pawl.

2021-04-30 Thread Curt Raymond via Mercedes
"Counter help is also noticably more informed and professional."Boy ain't that
the truth?I figure there are tiers of quality at FLAPS. NAPA is the highest, I
used to consider Car Quest next before they got bought. Sometimes you can find
an Autozone that used to be a Car Quest that still has knowledgeable help.
Local FLAPS like my local Federated Autoparts is usually in this tier.Next is
Autozone and O'Reilly although I don't have much experience with the latter.
Advance Auto tends (at least in my area) to have the stupidest employees. The
worst here was when the manager was a guy I'd gone to college. Pleasant guy but
everything he knows about cars can be explained with the time he duct taped
over the rust on his grey Ford Tempo. Some things never change...
There's a really nice new NAPA in Caribou. There is a young woman working the
counter, she's gorgeous, could be a model in a country music video and she's
sharp as a whip. I went in to get an oil filter for a Farmall Super M, she
didn't even look it up, knew what I wanted and where it was. Its funny to watch
the counter guys defer to her, she's super fast at looking stuff up when she
has to...

NAPA deals primarily with commercial service businesses, which are their bread
and butter. I used NAPA when I was in the generator business, as I could often
order a part and have it within a few hours, or typically the same day. Their
distribution system is awesome and can move stuff around quickly, which is
important when parts availability affects your ability to do business.

And in most cases, the people behind the counter know their stuff.

Re: [MBZ] OT Lowes

2021-04-30 Thread Allan Streib via Mercedes
I have not tried to return a craftsman tool since the local Sears store
shut down, so I don't know if the current craftsman retailers honor the
lifetime warranties. I'd guess they do, it's just good business. Even
Harbor Fright has a lifetime warranty on hand tools.

That's true, but as you say it's an annoyance that I'd rather avoid.

Yes NAPA is a go-to for me also. Their prices tend to be a little higher
than Autozone, O'Reilly, etc. but their service and warranties are
generally better. Counter help is also noticably more informed and

It's a lot cheaper/easier to make something that _looks_ well-built than to
actually do it.
Few non-professionals will wear them out, so their corporate bottom line comes
out better
dealing with the problem at the warrantee level than at the product level.

Sucks, though, when it's your tool. Sucks also if you're a prepper/apocalyist
trying
to be ready for a warrantee-less future.

Current business practice, and governmental interference, actively punishes
planning ahead. The Agile flow, which is intended to avoid investing too
much up-front effort in _execution_ of possibly-unnecessary work, is actually
being applied to avoid _all_ planning and forethought. Stupid, stupid, stupid.

I experienced this, personally, via a pointy-haired boss who was publicly
humiliating me in a meeting for doing a rough breakdown of anticipated work.
We're talking about less than a minute invested in a breakdown of anticipated
tasks.
I almost quit on the spot. What is the point of having experienced workers, who
know how to avoid repeating the mistakes of the past?

I no longer work there, and wish them corporate death at their (in)convenience.
(Rule 1 when working for assholes: don't quit until you have the next job lined
up.)

> As for a "one chip" computer for cars... Why not? a computer is
> certainly capable of receiving and processing data from multiple sources.

The multiple sources _are_ the problem. Embedded I/O, which is the more
costly part now when compared to CPU cores and (modest) memory.
That and cost-shaving, where you don't use an overly-capable part if you
can use a custom one that is pennies less per unit.

There _are_ benefits to reliability if you're not deploying overly-capable
hardware.
So far as I know, the only real mistake made was in not keeping inventory.

[MBZ] OT Lowes

2021-04-30 Thread Floyd Thursby via Mercedes
I had this Kobalt garden rake, fiberglass handle, looked pretty sturdy,
I recall when I bought it I thought well it will last being fiberglass.
i was using it the other day and the handle snapped at the neck of the
rake, turns out the inside of the fiberglass tube is just cheap wood,
and the fiberglass part on the handle went about 1/2" into the neck, the
wood just gave up after some number of years and snapped, I don't think
it was left outside much to rot but it was cheap wood.

Today I took it back, the girl at returns told me to get another one and
she would swap it. So that worked out nicely.

I also noticed that a lot of their power and hand tools are now
Crapsman, I did not really look at any of them to see what the quality
looked like.  I wonder if they will honor the "lifetime" guarantee on
the hand tools.  I think they have that on their Kobalt tools, which
seem pretty decent.  I guess it is all chineechit, built to whatever
quality they specify.

My tractor buying saga is finally (hopefully) at it's end. Today I picked up
a 1998 Ford 1920. It's a 32hp 4wd compact tractor with front end loader.
1900 hours but it starts with just a touch of the

https://photos.app.goo.gl/o7g8Z4btoNSnwTj79
https://photos.app.goo.gl/Q1RCkz5K7WqptTRq6
It's about a 20 foot machine, in the last pic you can see that its been
"repainted". But the hydraulics all move good, it makes no bad noises in any
gear (12 of them!).
The transmission is interesting, its a 4spd synchronized shuttle shift with
3 ranges which adds up to 12 speeds forward and reverse. I don't think I'll
be trying 14mph backwards...
Next step is a full service, M1 TDT in the engine and interestingly almost
everything else uses hydraulic oil from the front diff to power steering to
hydraulics...

 This.
This is why hospitals have had such an issue, they have no stockpiles. That one
especially strikes me as stupid. I was amazed last winter when the hospitals
again ran short of PPE, you'd think they'd have learned last spring and would
have stockpiled some stuff when it was available during the late summer. But
no, the MBAs of course thought there would never be a disruption again...

Not a chance.  The CPU/memory is the least part of it.  These things are full
of custom I/O and etc. now.  There are hundreds of CPUs in the current cars,
mostly fairly small ones.  How many do you have to have a shortfall on to
prevent a sale?  (Hint: one.)

The real problem is just-in-time production, and governmental inventory taxes.
Even if the silicon is very cheap (in bulk), they don't stockpile this stuff
anymore.
Which means, it only takes ONE problem to bring the whole complex mess
crashing down.

I intend to pick up a 5 foot bush hog for it at some point. The Super M will
probably stay the main mowing tractor but this will be a lot more handy with a
3pt mower and live PTO.
I'm going to keep my eye out for a backhoe too but I'm not too concerned about
it. I can rent an excavator for $1200/week if I really need to dig. This think
will make hauling what I dig up much easier...
I've already got a 2 bottom plow and harrows, it'll be nice to be able to have
the plow on the Super M and the harrow on the Ford.
Setting up an order for all my filters now, NAPA's website is super handy, they
even had a listing for the 1952 Super M.

Glad it was a good experience, Scott.

I’ve got a guy who I have used for over a decade to move cars for me as well as
referred to many people. He’s done a great job for everyone as far as I know,
and I wouldn’t trust anyone else with my cars if I needed one moved.

The Internet services are cut-throat at best, which is why your son got a $500
bid. His experience is common based on what I’ve heard.

One of the things I really like about my guy is that he knows the business well
and will tell you if what you want to do is possible. Case in point:

A good friend and neighbor is currently in Monterey, CA, with his daughter and
her family. He’s been out there for two year and is returning to Florida this
summer (son in law is officer in Army and he follows them around the country.)
My car broker moved their cars out to CA when they went out there. Buddy called
the broker a couple of weeks ago to explore the movement of the cars back to
Florida. Broker tells him that the current flight of Californians out of the
state is making the availability of carriers scarce until late May. Buddy
doesn’t want to move cars until June so he’s good to go and will follow up as
time gets closer. If he had gone ahead and booked online for June or July he
would be paying the current price, which is astronomical.

This business is seasonal and has a number of very well known “flows” or
migrations that has a huge effect on the cost and availability of trucks. My
guy knows these well and will do his best to provide guidance so you can either
avoid the higher costs or gain an advantage based on where the traffic is going.

I’ll gladly provide his contact information to anyone who wants it if you PM me.

2021-04-30 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
Yeah, that’s another time where there’s a “bump” in traffic, but the majority
of them come down in October/November. Weather can affect that, too.

The time between Thanksgiving and Xmas is tough, as a lot of carriers go off
the road during this time since demand is low. They’ll do maintenance and spend
time at home. I found this out when I moved the former 220SEb from Tucson to
Florida a few years ago. I bought the car the week after Thanksgiving and he
wasn’t able to get me a ride until the week before Christmas. However, he got
me a covered carrier for the price of an open carrier because he found someone
coming my way with an empty spot to fill.

Curt,

Since she was shipping during one of the “migration” periods and along a busy
corridor, I’m sure it was cheaper. Starting after Labor Day the migration of
snowbirds begins slowly, peaking in late October and going until Thanksgiving.
Since everyone is going in one direction and there are few going out, a lot of
carriers are deadheading back North to get more loads. Some of them contract
with rental car companies to move inventory or leasing companies who are moving
cars to other markets. That’s still a small number compared to what’s going

[MBZ] New toy

2021-04-30 Thread Curt Raymond via Mercedes
My tractor buying saga is finally (hopefully) at it's end. Today I picked up a
1998 Ford 1920. It's a 32hp 4wd compact tractor with front end loader. 1900
hours but it starts with just a touch of the
keyhttps://photos.app.goo.gl/Uo5en44yC5J5JeLN9
https://photos.app.goo.gl/o7g8Z4btoNSnwTj79
https://photos.app.goo.gl/Q1RCkz5K7WqptTRq6
It's about a 20 foot machine, in the last pic you can see that its been
"repainted". But the hydraulics all move good, it makes no bad noises in any
gear (12 of them!).
The transmission is interesting, its a 4spd synchronized shuttle shift with 3
ranges which adds up to 12 speeds forward and reverse. I don't think I'll be
trying 14mph backwards...
Next step is a full service, M1 TDT in the engine and interestingly almost
everything else uses hydraulic oil from the front diff to power steering to
hydraulics...

I haven't kept up on the prices of this stuff to know if this is in line
with the market but any time you see a crazy good deal on flash
card/thumb drives be wary, this stuff is a prime target for
counterfeiters. They fake the packaging so it looks like a brand name,
and program the card to tell the computer it's a 200GB card, so when you
pop it in it all looks good, but it really has only 20GB or maybe even
just 2GB of actual storage.

For this kind of thing I would only buy from an established major
retailer. Their supply chains are probably legit. On ebay or amazon, or
at a local convenience store or gas station, you have no idea.

Likely not.

That’s for two reasons:

1.) He was going “against the flow”, as most traffic is coming south this time
of year; and,

2.) Short notice. The closer you are to a move date, the higher the price gets.

To contrast, I once moved a W124 400E from Greenville, SC to Tampa. It was in
the winter, meaning that most traffic was moving south, although it’s a slow
time. I gave a few days notice and my broker guy got me a ride within a day for
$400. No doubt it was someone already coming this way who had an open spot on
the truck.

Re: [MBZ] A (car) Moving Experience

2021-04-30 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes

[MBZ] A (car) Moving Experience

2021-04-30 Thread Scott Ritchey via Mercedes
Oldest stepson decided to move from FL to NC with two cars: shipping one and
driving one.

He contacted a Las Vegas based car-mover broker (from the Internet) who gave
him a good price (like $500, I think). But when the deadline came it became
clear that he would not get scheduled any time soon and no other broker
would work with him as long as he was "on the board" with that original
broker. Fortunately he was able to cancel that original arrangement
(apparently someone there did not get the word not to answer his calls).

Then he was able to list with a more reputable broker and was scheduled for
pickup the very next day (about $800 I think).

That actual move was very smooth: door to door in two days. I met the
driver last evening, a great guy originally from somewhere in the Middle
East (didn't ask). If someone needs a car moved on the east coast, I can
recommend JILA Transportation: 781-244-9351 or 781-521-0077 for direct
contact bypassing brokers. Apparently, the brokers get about $200 for
scheduling but the truckers do all the actual work. The broker took a
credit card but the trucker was COD.

I never shipped a car and knew none of this. I didn't think to ask folks
here until the original deal fell apart and by then we were out of time.
Maybe this experience will help others or maybe experienced members can say
what we did wrong.

The carmakers, fearing slowdowns in sales, did not place orders for the silicon
they
might need. The silicon vendors were able to fill their fabs to capacity with
orders for
consumer silicon, such as memory cards, which _did_ experience an uptick in
sales.
When the automakers tried to place late orders, the vendors could only say
'sorry',
and put the new orders at the end of the queue. (Six months out?)

And you don't just turn on a new fab overnight.

I remember when GB hard drives were like $1/GB, here you can buy a flash
card the size of a thumbnail with 200GB for $0.11/GB, Couple weeks ago I
got 3x32GB for $16 to go in some dashcams I got on sale, a cheap vidcam,
and this cheap $40 contract phone I just use for vids.  I don't know why
cars can't get chips but you can buy this stuff for next to nothing.
