It was MythBusters. I think it was a corvette.
Left two (?) pigs in it for a few weeks (months).

Had a professional cleaner specializing in issues of this nature
(dead bodies, versus pigs) attempt to clean it.
They removed all non-metalic objects from inside, washed it down with
organic solvents. Hopeless.
Finally sold car to fellow after video-taping various folks gasping
at stench. Fellow wanted it for the drive train, commented on bad
smell inside tho.

End result was if something dead is left inside for a few weeks, then
forget about salvaging it.

Yeah, the gun situation is Canada is tragic. They're making "self-defense"
a bad word - look at New Orleans to see the govt cannot *always* take care
of us. 95% of the time the police arrive *after* the criminal has committed
the crime & left. With all the bad press the gun gets for hurting people,
the press *never* talks about the huge number of times a gun prevents or
stops a crime - often with never firing a shot. It's been estimated people
use guns between 700k and 3 million times per year typically just by showing
the presence of a gun is enough to make the bad guys go elsewhere. The
Center for Disease Control did a study and found they could not prove all
the gun law did any good, Not waiting periods, not background checks - none
of the Brady Bill laws - could be shown to reduce crime. But in every
state where concealed carry was permitted crime went down. But the press
doesn't talk about non-exciting situations - saying 4 people were gunned
down gets page one - someone lifted his shirt to show he had a 9mm there and
frightened off 3 gang members doesn't rate a mention - no matter how many
times it happens.

I'm sincerely sorry about the registration scheme in place in Canada - it
was supposed to cost 2 million and now it's over a Billion when they decided
to stop counting the costs. ;-\ Sadly, the removal of guns from law
abiding people in Canada will cost more lives than it saves.

Re: [MBZ] Global warming

2005-11-26 Thread l02turner
Speaking of climate change - there's a interesting program on the History
Channel about the ittle ice age - around 1000 AD it warmed up, causing
people to start growing *really* good grapes in England - people moved there
to enjoy the nice weather - all was fine for a couple hundred years - then
it turned colder - 4F in 10 years - crops failed, people starved, people
(and animals) started staying cramped together indoors which promoted the
spread of disease and the plague wiped out 25 milllion people. Even the
Norsemen couldn't withstand the cold & most died out. People allowed some
of their children to die so the others would have enough to eat. Hansel &
Gretle is supposedly about this practice.

They use tree ring dating to confirm some of this info -

Anyway - I caught bits and pieces of the show while working on the car so I
missed a lot but I bet it'll be on again.

In any case, the cycle of warm and cold climate change is a ever happening
circumstance. People may not be as responsible for the current (mild @ 1F
per 100 years) warming trend - much more damage might have occurred during
the 1800s and early 1900s with widespread wood burning, coal burning as well
as many 1000's of oil filled ships torpedoed or otherwise burned and sunk
during the 2 big wars. With our hugely more economical cars which as
recently as the 60s were lucky to get 15mpg - now it's not unusual to get
nearly double that in most large cars (my 97 Chrysler Concord got 26).
Along with much more miserly heat pumps and 20% of electr being generated by
nuke power - we should be seen as less responsible for climate change rather
than more so.

Or I could be wrong. ;-)

Several points. Are the belts tight? Have you torqued the steering box

[MBZ] ACC madness

2005-11-26 Thread Zeitgeist
On thursday I gave thanks for the existence of 30 watt pencil-tip
soldering guns. I decided to tackle the loathsome ACC units in both
my 123 and 124. Pulled the PBU from both and proceeded to do the
touch-and-go on each circuit board. When it was over, the 123
performed flawlessly, while my 124 returned to its usual routine of
obstinately refusing to send vacuum to the footwell pod. The 123 had
obvious signs of cold solder joints, but the 124 unit had a sticker
claiming it was "rebuilt", so I couldn't find too many outward signs
of problems on the circuit board. I touched up a few joints just to
say I did, plugging it in and crossing my fingers--nothing to be
thankful for.

Does anyone know if the 7 port vacuum manifold is the same between
diesels and gassers, or between and amongst all the years of the 124
(and 201 or later 126) series? Anyone got a spare lying around? If I
can't easily fix this on the cheap, I might just wire in a spare
overboost solenoid or other electro-mechanical vacuum solenoid to send
vacuum to that infernal footwell pod in all circumstances except full
defrost.

In most cases, the ALDA will let the rack go up against the full load stop
before it sees 12psi, beyond that the turbo is just making backpressure in
the exhaust and heat in the intake without increasing fuel to the engine.
Hank wouldn't notice a drop in power when re-enabling the wastegate if
the ALDA still allowed full fuel with the wastegate functioning.

If your thermostat is working as it should work, there should be NO lack
of heat in the cabin after you've driven for several minutes.
You can of course bypass the pump, but you MAY find that the heat flow
thru the heater core will be modest or even inadequate except at highway
cruising speeds - in city traffic it may be chilly. The aux. pump is to
compensate for the low water pump output thru the heater core at low
engine speed.

The pump CAN be eliminated in smaller, later cars (201s) without any
detectable loss in heat, and in 124s the heat loss is very modest. Not
sure about 126s.

Are you sure that your heater/AC servo is working as it should?

Re: [MBZ] Global warming

2005-11-26 Thread R A Bennell
Coming home from the grocery store this morning (actually around noon) my
wife counted 24 deer grazing beside the road on a minimalist golf course.
This is in the city and within 2 miles of my home. It is getting silly.
There are too bloody many of the things and fewer and fewer hunters here (in
Canada). The government has made it more and more difficult to own or
acquire firearms and the result is that many people have just given up. Now
we just kill deer with our cars. Had a client in this afternoon who hit one
inside the city limits on Thursday evening and did quite a number on his
late model Honda Civic. Good thing he was alone and did not have anyone in
the passenger seat. The deer's butt took out the passenger side window
totally. The right side wing mirror ended up in the back seat and the
passenger front seat is covered in broken glass and deer droppings.
Windshield stayed intact but is very badly cracked all over. Will need a new
passenger front fender, and front door. Back passenger door can likely be
repaired. All this at about 60 to 70 kph. (about 40 - 45 mph). He never saw
it at all before it hit him.

Reminds me of a conversation that some guy claimed to have had with
a state natural resources biologist, I think it was in Colorado.
"How many deer does a cougar kill?"
"About one a week"
"How many cougar are in our state?"
"About 20,000"
"So cougar kill a million deer a year?"
"That's not possible!"
"But it's what you just told me"

If the above represents the current situation, what was it like before
human intervention lowered the predator population?

Re: [MBZ] O/T Mig Welding

2005-11-26 Thread Harry Watkins
The Handyman Club of America magazine did a " Which mig welder is right for
you" article in their July/August 2005 issue.

They wrote:

"We're not professional welders; we want a machine we can use in the garage
or anywhere we can find a typical 115-volt, 20-amp home outlet.

To satisfy our needs, a welder must be easy to set up, and it must produce
good-quality welds. It should be portable, easy to load with wire and simple
to adjust for wire-feed speed and voltage. It should have a duty cycle that
allows us to accomplish a reasonable amount of work during a typical welding
session. And because we're budget-conscious, it should be as easy on the
wallet as possible."

They had the owner of Tin Man Fabrications and a couple of editors evaluate
these seven welders: Campbell Hausfeld Flux 95, $299; Hobart Handler125 EZ,
$435, Craftsman 20569, $299, Lincoln Electric SP-135 Plus, $499, Hobart
Handler 140, $590, Miller Millermatic 135, $700 and Miller Millermatic DVI,
$1250.

The $700 Millermatic was their "Top Tool" choice and the Craftsman was
chosen as the "Best Value." The craftsman had erratic wire-speed and it
comes without a gas regulator (another $30 to $50).

I am not a welder and I don't play one on TV so I don't know what any of
this means, however, this is why they picked the Millermatic 135:

A quick change drive-wheel swapping system. A cast aluminum drive head
(others use resin-composite). A unique gun design with faster to use
push-on tips (others used screw-on tips). Continuously variable voltage
control. A unique wire-feed speed-tracking system that automatically makes
adjustments to the wire-feed rate as you adjust the voltage and some other
kind words about comfort and plenty of power.

I hope you welders will chime in let us know what really counts when we go
to make a purchase.

Google found a couple of the Millermatic 135 for under $600.

I repaired all the hoses OK. Just didn't notice any changes afterwards.
I am just not clear what went on when both, wastegate and ALDA, were
disconnected.
ALDA disconnected = no fuelenrichment = low boost - no need for the
wastegate.
ALDA connected, Wastegate inop = fuel enrichment to max boost, than ALDA
cuts fuel back.

The issue of forestation and human interaction is quite complex. Yes, the
"Indians" used to fire the prarie (and forest), but nature probably did more of
it.

Most forest/prarie ecosystems are fire dependent -- I could go on at length,
but this is really an MB discussion group anyway.

Point is that the state of the ecology of any area isn't static, it is always
changing. We do need to pay attention, as it is possible to envision a stable
worldwide climate that is quite hostile to humans, and it's possible we are
currently inducing it.

2005-11-26 Thread Peter Frederick
Yes, the performance was amazing. So were the maintenance costs, what with
130 or so different shapes for external sheathing and no two ribs the same

Repair costs killed the Connie more than anything, along with the goofy triple
tail, a requirement from TWA that it fit a DC-3 hanger.

The Wright TurboCompound was also a maintenance nightmare, and keeping props on
it was almost as bad as it was on the R4360 used on the Boeing 377.

No one was really sorry to see piston engines go, believe me.

Only the SuperConnie could actually cross the atlantic without a stop at Gander
and/or Shannon, and it had to stop in Gander going West most of the time. The
DC-7C was a bit better, but the 377 flew so low it could only skip Gander if
very lightly loaded -- 12500 ft was all it could do until more than half the
fuel was gone.

Re: [MBZ] OT Brit Aircraft

2005-11-26 Thread Peter Frederick
Actually, the Comet fuselage failure was somewhat more complex than just bad
design. First, there was a paperwork error that mislocated a rivet in the
windowframe by about 1/4" toward the outside, virtually certain to cause a
fatigue failure. This was NOT a design error, it was an error introduced
during drafting.

Second, the particular window frame affected just happened to be at a very
high stress point as it was directly below the corner of the fiberglass panel
in the roof for the internal radio antenna system, so that a window failure
resulted not in a blow out window but a massive failure of the entire row of
windows, resulting in the complete disintegration of the airframe.

Progressive failure of a fuselage like the original Comet design has been
prevented in all latter aircraft by a "rip reistant" design pioneered by the
Comet design team.

You should note that the Comet in it's original form had four 5000 lb static
thrust de Havilland Ghost engines, grossly underpowered even in the
"featherweight" structure -- the functional equivlanet of one engine on a
Boeing 707-200. Later models had about twice the engine power and better
structure. The Comet was also pressurized to 9.5 psi, about a third higher
than current aircraft, and flew at 40,000 plus ft altitude fully loaded. A
contemporary DC-6 could stagger all the way up to 25,000 ft, was pressurized
to 4.5 psi, and was almost 200 mph slower.

The Comet was already slated for complete replacement due to structural
inadequacy before the fuselage failures -- there was at least one, probably
two, crashes of the original design traced to wing fatigue greatly acclerated
by turbulence (and severe turbulence shortly before the failure was a factor
in both fuselage failures). De Havilland was in the process of reworking the
whole design inside the company to greatly increase capacity (only 40
passengers in the original design) and to carry much more fuel and heavier
engines.

All this was done by hand with slide rules -- massive failures in cutting edge
aeronauitical designs were more or less the rule in those days of puny engines
and fairly primitive understanding of modern aerodynamics.

So far as I know, no Comet 4 every suffered a severe structural failure, and
corrosion problems are NOT a design defect so much as a maintenance or
ignorance problem. Ditto for the tail icing crashes that brought down some
Viscounts (and was a problem on Brittanias, too, I think) -- to be a design
defect the problem has to be known and understood during the design phase, and
no aluminum plane has lasted long enough prior to WWII to develop fatigue
problems -- they were all destroyed by unrealted crashes or fires or obsoleted
before the accumulated enough hours of use to show fatigue. Bad drawings are
a technical deffect, but hardly a design problem. I don't know what would
have happened if the rivet had been correctly placed, but having where it was
reduced the fatigue resistance upwards of 90 %, and the "test" airframe had a
minor failure there before the side blew out in testing.

The Nimrod the RAF used up until very recently (if it isn't still in use for
antisubmarine work) was a Comet 4, not a refitted Comet I or II -- the only
Comet I or II airframes built were for commerical customers, and there weren't
more than 25 assembled before the fuselage failiures became known. All were
scrapped post-haste. The Comet 4 entered service in 1956.

After all, anybody who ever flew a Curtis Commando will tell you about design
defects -- electrical, hydraulic, and pnematic lines all going through the
same hole in the frame where the control stick could rub on them is one
examplealmost gaurenteed a massive fire someday.

The Avro Jetliner was a wonderful plane, killed by the American aircraft
manufacturers via the Canadian goverment. It had much the same operational
characteristics as a DC-9/737 minus the short feild capability, and if the
Rolls Conway had been available, would have eaten Boeing's lunch in short haul
jet transport. Brilliant design, but due to political shenanigans was
blowtorched and landfilled, blueprints burned. Ship one rolled off the line
in 1949, almost a decade before the US builders popped out a jet passenger
plane.

Ditto for the Arrow in 1961.

The DC-3 was known as a very reliable aircraft in WWII, but it had been
carrying passengers since 1934 and all the "infant mortality" had been worked
out -- like a cover over the control column pivot so a pilot's headphones
couldn't slide down and jam the column in full down or up position.
External gust locks for the fabric tail crashed any number of DC-3, etc etc.

Peter

I've never replaced one is a 123, but have in 107, 115, and 124. They
were all dirt simple -
Clean dirt off to find nuts and bolt heads.
Loosen bolts and nuts holding mount to bracket and tranny.

the

I have wondered what would happen if the Arctic and Antarctic oceans
warmed up. Typically, the very cold water from the ice sheets drops
below
the warmer salt ocean water and forms the deep "return" stream for
the

Gulf Stream in the Atlantic. In recent years, the meltwater is warm
enough that it is less dense than the saline ocean water, and there
is
more of it, and it does not sink, rather remaining on the surface.
This
"cold slug" of mineral depeleted water has had a large impact on the
cod

fishery, compounding the serious overfishing that was going on. The
combination resulted in the collapse of the cod fishery.

I have a feeling that loss of icecap may very well result in a
re-arrangment of the ocean currents in the Altantic (and probably
Pacific
as well) -- I wonder what Europe will look like if the Gulf Stream
goes
across the Atlantic and down Africa instead of up the US coast and

As I tried to point out to my Ecology classes, climate is a

[MBZ] Touch-up paint preparation

2005-11-26 Thread OK Don
I ordered touch-up paint by paint code for the '90 300D, it arrived,
the weather is warm for Nov. (60's). So I want to apply it, but
realized that Snook has been washing and waxing this car religiously,
which is one of the reasons I bought it. Therefore, the scratches I'm
about the touch up, undoubtedly have wax in and around them. What's
the proper way to prepare for brushing on a little bit of paint? I'm
talking about a few nicks a quarter the size of a pencil eraser, and
one key scratch about 12 inches long and 1/64th inch wide.

Re: [MBZ] Rubber parts replacement

2005-11-26 Thread Andrew Cunningham
Hans,

The rubber hose tells the wastegate to limit the power so with it
disconnected you will be at the highest boost possible until the overboost
sensor on the Intake Manifold kicks in and cuts the signal to the ALDA.
Without that line connected you should actually have more power (up until
the overboost kicks in above typical wastegate pressures).

Re: [MBZ] OT - Ike's Plane

2005-11-26 Thread Peter Frederick
Both Truman's and Eisenhower's planes are in running condtion at
Wright-Patterson AFB in Dayton, OH (or at least they where 6 or so years
ago).

The Columbine is a SuperConnie, I think, and Truman's is a DC-6.

I think the DC-4 that FDR used is there as well, but I'm not sure.

2005-11-26 Thread tom savage
Holy cow! If "quality is job #1" at Ford, I shudder to contemplate the
rankings of everything else.

"Mercedes for old cars, Toyota for new cars.
Toyota for small to medium trucks, Mercedes for big trucks."

  Recalls
Check with the seller to ensure that the recall work was completed on
these items.

1997: It is possible that the intermediate steering shaft yoke may
break, causing a loss of steering control. Dealer will inspect and
replace affected parts.

1997: Operation at highway speeds in winter conditions can cause PVC
fitting to freeze; throttle plate could then remain in cruising position
after pedal is released.

1997: Certification label shows incorrect rear-tire-inflation pressure.

1997: Retainer clip that holds master-cylinder pushrod to brake-pedal
arm could be missing, causing loss of braking.

1997: Seatbelt-anchorage attachments are missing or misinstalled.

1997: Separation of transmission bracket fitting from cable can result
in inability to shift into "Park."

1997-98: If vehicle is overloaded, rear leaf springs can fracture.

1997-98: Throttle is unable to return to idle due to ice forming in
throttle body.

1997-98: Shift-cable assembly might not be fully attached to steering
column bracket and could come out, preventing shifting into "Park" even
though indicator shows it is in "Park."

1997-98: Certain off-lease vehicles, Canadian in origin but sold in the
U.S., have daytime running lights that do not meet U.S. specifications.

1997-98: Lug nuts may loosen and studs may experience fatigue failure,
with potential for wheel separation.

1997-98: Main battery cable can contact body panel in trunk, resulting
short circuit.

1999: Tire and rim identification information is incorrect on
certification labels.

1999: Fuel-pressure regulator O-ring may have been damaged, allowing
fuel-vapor leakage.

1999: Speed-control cable on certain vehicles can interfere with pulley,
preventing throttle from returning to idle when disengaging the speed
control.

1999-00: Accelerator-cable core wire on certain trucks can wear the
conduit end fitting; could lead to separation of strands, which could
prevent throttle from returning to idle.

2000-01: A switch located in the plastic cover of the wiper-motor gear
case could malfunction and overheat, potentially resulting in loss of
wiper function or fire.

2000-01: Some of the owner's manuals for these vehicles are missing
instructions for properly attaching a child-restraint system.

2001: Driver- and/or front-passenger-outboard seatbelt buckle may not
fully latch. In the event of a crash, the restraint system may not
provide adequate occupant protection.

[MBZ] Pwr Steering Groaning

2005-11-26 Thread Rich Thomas
The last couple of weeks the PS on the 79 TD has been groaning a bit on
turns. I changed fluid/filter 6-8 months ago, no problem then. Fluid
level OK, no leaks I can see.

It has been a bit cooler here (like 40s low a couple nights, but 70s-80s
in the day) but it does not seem to be temp dependent -- does it when
the car is warm in the daytime.

What might be causing this?

Re: [MBZ] 1980 300D Aux heater pump

2005-11-26 Thread Jim Cathey
During this time of year, heat into the passenger compartment is
greatly
needed. I found open windings on the auxiliary heat pump motor even
though
the voltage input was good at 12vdc. Can this pump be bypassed without
risk

to the heater core?

Yes. These things die and are not all that cheap. Most people just
unplug
them (something you apparently don't need to do), as flow through them
when
off is not impeded too much. The pump normally only improves cabin
heating

in cold climates at engine idle. Stop-and-freeze driving, that is. If
you're not having this problem, messing with the pump is unlikely to
yield

any results.

Re: [MBZ] Rubber parts replacement

2005-11-26 Thread Hans Neureiter
After I did a long needed valve adjustment I stumbled on a disconnected ALDA
pressure line and fixed it. The cars performance improved drastically, ~20
sec. for 0 - 100 km/hr to under 15 sec.
Now I discovered the wastegate pressure line broken off and replaced it, but
this didn't make any noticeable difference.
I have a heavy foot to get to 60 mph, but rarely exceed this speed. Maybe in
that range the wastegate function is not important.

I also agree the Super Connie is a neat airplane.

What type did President Eisenhower have as his Air Force 1? I used to
remember what he called it, but I've forgotten.

I had a Dodge Dart in Colorado whose speedometer stopped working when I
drove through deep snow to get to work. It turned out the speedometer
cable was sheared off at the transmission.

diagnostic software you can run on a laptop computer that interacts with the

with the plugin on your car. you can read engine trouble codes, basically what

that was sort of what I did the first time. hit the scap yard for some decent
pieces of metal to practice running beads. wasn't always straight, but after

Re: [MBZ] Belt tensioning lever replacement - 602.962

2005-11-26 Thread Jim Cathey

Have there been any reports of successfully replacing the bearings in
the lever arm??

Our SDL ate its new tensioner arm's bearings in what I consider to be
short order (two years?), so I replaced the bearing in it. The original
is an odd size, a double-race job that is quite deep. I couldn't easily
source it, so I used two single-race bearings with a spacer in between.

So far, so good.

[MBZ] might be needing some cars

2005-11-26 Thread LT Don
This is not an offer to buy -- it is an info search.

I MIGHT be in need of two good Benzes in the near future (i.e., December or
January).

I need a diesel for the wife. I'd prefer a 300D sort of thing -- a 240D
would be much too slow for her. Maybe a 190D would do as well.

For the daughter, a 190 series gasser, probably. She will be going off to
college in Iowa and won't have the benefit of block heaters, etc.

Anyone have a candidate available?

I am not looking for showroom condition, but it must be at least not make
one gag cosmetically.

Re: [MBZ] cheap 109

2005-11-26 Thread l02turner
Hmmm..."Cheap" may not be the most accurate description. The air
suspensions appears to need a rebuild- from $6000 -$10,000 - and the rust
"trunk, wheel wells and underneath" is just the start - these cars are
notorious for rusting in around the headlight buckets, lower fenders, doors,
and front bumper carrier - which also carries the radiator.

OTOH, They're absolutely awesome cars!! With amazing acceleration - my 72
280SE 4.5 (without air suspension) would chirp the tires at 45-50 mph when
I hit passing gear! And if the engine was tuned "perfectly" the tires
properly inflated and the driver gentle in driving habits, it would get
14-15mpg! But the ride was butter smooth, utterly quiet and very
impressive. Man, oh Man! What a car!

With 6 more days to go before the auction ends it'll be interesting to see
what the final bid is -- but I fear my heart would rule my head if I say
this car for $500!!

Luckily I discovered the magic of MB Diesels before I went bankrupt trying
to keep breathing life into old MB gassers!;-)

2005-11-26 Thread Bob DuPuy
Guys,
I am by no means an expert welder, but you should be able to get a decent
weld with co2 on a mig. You have to hold the nozzle close enough so the gas
can sheild the weld. Try turning your reg up a little for some more gas
flow. If you want a cleaner weld go with an argon co2 mix for a few dollars
more, or even straight argon for no spatter but it is spendy. Gas is much
better than the flux wire belive me once you get the hang of it you'll only
use the flux wire in an emergency.

Sounds like you needed a lot more heat and/or feed rate. Unless your

short, long, whatever, point is exactly what you say - you have trees now (as
do we in MO) but did not BEFORE the arrival of white men becuase we killed the
buffalo and put out prairie fires that killed trees. Don't have any personal
opinion on that except to point out that it's an example of humans CAUSING
large scale tree growth.

Re: [MBZ] O/T Mig Welding

2005-11-26 Thread l02turner
I also have a Lincoln Mig with a gas setup and got the same problems as the
poster who said he got spatter, etc. I was in the garage with zero wind -
but after reading more I think it may have had too much wire exposed - so
I'll try it with less next chance I get.

But the flux wire sounds interesting -- but I still plan to learn to do it
the proper way -

But the frustration of knowing what a good MIG bead looks like only to have
little beads on the surface with zero penetration is a PITA!

All I got from the Mig was splatter, really looked like crap. I left
it in a corner.

Something was wrong then, when it's working right (the old sizzling
bacon deal) the welds come out very clean with gas. Was it windy out?

Both those units claim to be able to use flux core wire. Are the
benefits of using gas worth the extra hassle?

You want the ability to use gas, and will absolutely need it if you
ever want to be able to weld aluminum with it. (Argon is the shielding
gas for that.)

Re: [MBZ] OT - MIG welders

2005-11-26 Thread Jim Cathey

Would it be easier to weld rusty exhaust pipes with MIG than with an
Oxy/acet. torch ?? Seems like it wouldn't burn as much.

Not really, it just spatters and doesn't weld until you do burn through
all the rust. I've watched near-artists with the oxy torch do exhaust
work, they make it look easy. (It's not!)
