[MBZ] Wretched Wife (not mine...)
So...I've been waiting since June or July for this guy, who owns the '72 350SL, to get well enough to go through the apparently difficult task of taking $1500 from me. Over this time I've stopped by the house a couple of time to check on him and his wife. I hepled him with a battery issue on his Ford Conversion van sitting in his drive. Offered at least three times to give him the money and I'd pick up the cars (he was throwing in the old W108 under the tarp) when he was ready to part with them (he wanted to reinstall the radio and the HVAC controls and the rest of the console...when he was feeling better before I took the car). So, I call today to check on him and his wife says they sold it to a friend and I better talk to him. He was apoligetic big time to me...his wife was carping at him in the backround...she evidently sold it to someone for far more $$ that he wanted from me. She did it while he was in a three day coma in the hsp two weeks ago. The strory of my lifeundone by a woman again. Re: [MBZ] worst place on earth to drive - was: OM617 head
I was in Saudi Arabia in the late 70's on a Natural Gas Project and found some interesting aspects of local highway driving. I was told the Muslim drivers would pass on hills and curves and leave their continued existance in the hands of Allah - don't know if true of not but I saw a *lot* of passing on hills and curves. Also was told there was a lot of eye disease among the indigent people that came from all the sand flying all the time (which was not in doubt) so a lot of drivers did not have great eyesight - especially at night. Another common story was the locals believed the right-of-way was bestowed on who ever had the largest vehicle. Hence the locals liked to drive the big trucks so they'd have the maximum right-of-way. Interesting concept. We also heard about foreigners always getting blamed for all accidents because if they hadn't been there the accident would not have occurred - so naturally it was the foreigners fault. There was also a story of a Westerner stopping at an accident and upon seeing a Saudi woman not breathing he removed her from the car and applied resusitation which aved her life. The story went that he was arrested and taken to jail for assaulting a Saudi woman. Seems hard to believe but after seeing hands hanging in the middle of the main town square (as a warning to potential theives) some things became easier to believe. One thing I found interesting was passing little settlements for lack of a better word out in the desert - there's be a dozen or so large wodden shipping containers like those large equipment was shipped in with doors and windows cut into them and TV antennas attached and a MB or Chev. Suburban (remember the big vehicle and right-of-way thing?) out front - never any Fords because they believed Ford was owned by Jewish investors. Seems they aren't aware of the publicly owned business concept. ;-) Lots of other things went on - but they have nothing to do with Mercedes. ;-) Larry T (67 MGB, 74 911, 78 240D, 91 300D) www.youroil.net for Oil Analysis and Weber Parts Test Results http://members.rennlist.com/oil PORSCHE POSTERS! youroil.net Weber Carb Info http://members.rennlist.com/webercarbs Porsche Road Test http://members.rennlist.com/roadtest/ . - Original Message - From: Potter, Tom E [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: Mercedes Discussion List mercedes@okiebenz.com Sent: Monday, September 25, 2006 3:02 PM Subject: Re: [MBZ] worst place on earth to drive - was: OM617 head Man, does Jeff have it right! Not only do a lot of people drive *slightly* faster then the right lane - a lot drive the same or slightly slower?? Drives me absolutely nuts. Also, I believe most of the states have laws on the books sating the left lane is a passing lane. But it's never gonna change - if anything drivers will continue to get worse. Yup. Change at 5 or six degrees, though, don't wait til 8. More sensitive to timing changes than the 617. Timing marks on on top on that engine, and a bit harder to line up properly. Line them up and read crank pulley. Peter
Re: [MBZ] Lane change signals/soooo much trouble
The law here says that indicators must be used when changing lanes, does not matter if anyone is there to see them or not. With me it's an automatic thing like checking the blind spot. First thing I do is indicate, quick check of the mirrors and a look over the shoulder to see if an idiot is sitting in my blind spot. This is all done on auto pilot and yes I do have near misses but they are misses. Re: [MBZ] Lane change signals/soooo much trouble
I take it you have never operated a heavy vehicle in traffic, I make a point of giving commercial drivers a fair go on the roads because they put up with the penisheads all day. It also doesn't hurt to flash your high beams to let the truck driver know you have seen his/her intention to change lanes and you will not get in his/her way. Anyway if the Government insists on handing out licenses to operate road missiles in breakfast cereal boxes you have to expect bad drivers. That is why the autobahn system works, good roads combined with good trainingooh and of course quality machines able to operate at high speeds. - Original Message - From: dave walton [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: [EMAIL PROTECTED]; Mercedes Discussion List mercedes@okiebenz.com Sent: Tuesday, September 26, 2006 5:38 AM Subject: Re: [MBZ] Lane change signals/s much trouble If you really want to screw up getting to where you are going - get in an accident. Re: [MBZ] Changing lanes
Over here it is the law that every truck has two large signs on the back that states to give way to turning heavy vehicles. This is mainly related to when a truck has to turn from the outside lane around a corner but it is also related to changing lanes. Basically if a truck says it has to change lanes you get out of it's way. I think what Robert is trying to say is, using the indicator is politely asking people to make room for you, pushing into their lane is telling them to get the hell out of the way because I have to be where you are. Some drivers need to be reminded that they are not the only person on the road and there is a code of conduct (enforced by laws) to be followed. If you decide not to follow this code you will have to face the consequences of your action. - Original Message - From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: mercedes@okiebenz.com Sent: Tuesday, September 26, 2006 6:07 AM Subject: Re: [MBZ] Changing lanes I had to read this post several times because I couldn't believe my eyes. Re: [MBZ] Lane change signals/soooo much trouble
BT Wrong. Flashing high beams signals the intention NOT to yield. Turning off lights momentarily signals that you DO intend to yield. I take it you have never driven in Europe - or have done so with ignorance. Might want to touch up on that training you spoke about. -Dave Walton On 9/25/06, Hendrik Riessen [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: I take it you have never operated a heavy vehicle in traffic, I make a point of giving commercial drivers a fair go on the roads because they put up with the penisheads all day. Re: [MBZ] Upgrades to OSX
Oh Woger. we have the same machine! I swore I would keep it forever, as its the last dual-boot mac. (Well, except for the new intel duo ones with Bootcamp) I keep drooling over the new ones, but since I am heavy in legacy Photoshop and Pagemaker, I'll keep the iMac I have. [MBZ] Leaky injector
Gang, On the way home tonight my '85 190D started to smell like diesel. At a light the engine shook and didn't seem right. Still it ran so I made for home. I just checked it out and diesel sprays out of the top of the #1 injector. In lieu of a proper wrench I put a crecent (boo hiss) wrench on it and snugged it down a little which didn't help. I then took it off. Everything looks normal but what do I know? I snugged it down again and its the same thing, #1 definately isn't firing and diesel sprays out of the top. So the fuel is coming out of the top by where the hard line goes in I think. Its hard to tell though and I don't really want to stick my head in there to see... Any ideas? This of course couldn't happen at a worse time. I just found out today I get to move from technical support to Education services but the move will entail a couple really long and hard weeks. I totally don't need this right now. -Curt - Get your email and more, right on the new Yahoo.com From [EMAIL PROTECTED] Tue Sep 26 01:17:15 2006 Received: from mail1.mx.voyager.net ([216.93.66.204]) by server8.arterytc8.net with esmtp (Exim 4.52) id 1GS1ZT-0006ye-7q for mercedes@okiebenz.com; Tue, 26 Sep 2006 01:17:15 + Received: from voyager.net (d92.as3.sfld1.mi.core.com [209.153.160.221]) by mail1.mx.voyager.net (8.13.2/8.10.2) with ESMTP id k8Q1GpHv005661 for mercedes@okiebenz.com; Mon, 25 Sep 2006 21:16:58 -0400 (EDT) Message-ID: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Date: Mon, 25 Sep 2006 21:16:50 -0400 From: Mitch Haley [EMAIL PROTECTED] X-Mailer: Mozilla 4.79 [en] (Windows NT 5.0; U) X-Accept-Language: en MIME-Version: 1.0 To: Mercedes Discussion List mercedes@okiebenz.com References: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit X-Antivirus-Scanner: Clean mail though you should still use an Antivirus Subject: Re: [MBZ] Leaky injector X-BeenThere: mercedes@okiebenz.com X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.7.cp2 Precedence: list Reply-To: Mercedes Discussion List mercedes@okiebenz.com List-Id: Mercedes Discussion List mercedes_okiebenz.com.okiebenz.com List-Unsubscribe: http://okiebenz.com/mailman/listinfo/mercedes_okiebenz.com, mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] List-Archive: /pipermail/mercedes_okiebenz.com List-Post: mailto:mercedes@okiebenz.com List-Help: mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] List-Subscribe: http://okiebenz.com/mailman/listinfo/mercedes_okiebenz.com, mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] X-List-Received-Date: Tue, 26 Sep 2006 01:17:15 - I wonder if you got the famed 60x injector line fracture. Re: [MBZ] Lane change signals/soooo much trouble
oh hell, that reminds me of the last time I was in Alaska. ALL the highways are 2 lane there. Out in the middle of nowhere on this curvy, up and down highway, Im cruising along at posted up to probably 10 over. I see this log truck in the distance. Coming up FAST. He then rides my ass ALL the way down the mountain. I mean, 2 feet or less behind. At some point, I think he passed me rather wrecklessly in a non passing zone. Seemed the truck driver was passing this guy's minivan on a two-lane road and decided he wanted to pull back into the right lane before the trailer was clear. Log truck drivers always seemed particularly aggressive to me about asserting what they perceived as their right of way. ___ http://www.okiebenz.com For new parts see official list sponsor: http://www.buymbparts.com/ For used parts email [EMAIL PROTECTED] To Unsubscribe or change delivery options go to: http://okiebenz.com/mailman/listinfo/mercedes_okiebenz.com -- Kaleb C. Put it in gear, didn't stall, released the brake and had no problem with the uphill driveway. Thanks everybody for their help! -- Kaleb C. The cops are only interested in writing tickets for speeding. LarryT wrote: Michael wrote:The left lane is for passing. How come 98% of people on the road don't understand this? Drives me absolutely nuts. Also, I believe most of the states have laws on the books sating the left lane is a passing lane. But it's never gonna change - if anything drivers will continue to get worse. Re: [MBZ] more lane changing
Over here it is the law that every truck has two large signs on the back that states to give way to turning heavy vehicles. This is mainly related to when a truck has to turn from the outside lane around a corner but it is also related to changing lanes. It is fairly common now to see a sign on the trailer of a semi which reads caution this vehicle makes wide right turns with a depiction of the vehicle turning. These signs are a good idea but do not grant a god-given right to run over another vehicle that may be trapped with no out. Basically if a truck says it has to change lanes you get out of it's way. I think what Robert is trying to say is, using the indicator is politely asking people to make room for you, pushing into their lane is telling them to get the hell out of the way because I have to be where you are. There was nothing polite about his wholehearted approval of ditching some poor bastard who didn't clear off. Some drivers need to be reminded that they are not the only person on the road and there is a code of conduct (enforced by laws) to be followed. If you decide not to follow this code you will have to face the consequences of your action. That applies to all. As for me, I don't drive in a heavy vehicle's blind spots and if I am coming up on the right (legal in the US) and I see he needs to move right, I will give him a flash and yield. On the left if there is a speed differential I accelerate smartly so he can maintain his momentum. But he had damned well not try to ditch me because in this state that is an ticketable offense called Unsafe Lane Change. RLE
Re: [MBZ] flashing
Walton sez; BT Wrong. Flashing high beams signals the intention NOT to yield. Turning off lights momentarily signals that you DO intend to yield. BT, not exactly During DAYLIGHT hours, a flash means OK to move over. At NIGHT, lights off momentarily means the same thing. RLE

I've sold some Apple total trash on EBay to guys in Japan for big bucks. Don't know why but Japan is lusting after old Apple stuff. An Apple II+ brought almost $300 plus shipping -- I took it out of someone's trash. I'd think an early Mac would bring $500 and a well, something really desirable. Best I can tell, they (the Japs) are gutting the Apple motherboards for music synthesizers or something like that. Must be a chip (not to be confused with as Richmond area Chip) thing. The only thing on EBay that brought me more profit than Apple II was Drum and Bugle Corps record albums -- an easy $200 for stuff found at GoodWill for $1. Times five or so! D. The native born are real sticklers for using signals. In seattle you can tell the natives because they make sure to signal all turns. Some are kind enough to begin signaling a few miles before they approach an intersection or three as well as off ramps. Yes, the WA natives use the strategy I call the ten minute turn. First, they signal their intentions...five miles ahead of their actual target; then slowly and incrementally reduce their speed, in expectation of their eventual turn. Jim your help and the help of the others has been of high value. I went out today an bought a soder gun. I have three cores. If I mess up I will send one to you. No I have never soldered before. So be checking your mail Jim I hate to rain on your parade, but if you're soldering for the first time on this, it probably won't work. Especially with a gun rather than a good iron with a fine tip. There are a _lot_ of connections, and they're rather small (though nothing when compared to modern surface-mount.) But if that's OK with you, it's OK with me! But if you do send me one, I'd prefer it to be one you haven't tried yourself first, no offense intended. If you take enough time, and are careful enough, you _can_ probably get it to work. I once asked about slop in M/B boxes and what needs to be replaced. The fellow said that unless the box had been adjusted too tightly they would never wear out, the bearings just get a little slop and need to be re-adjusted. To properly adjust the bearings you need a few very pricey special tools to hold the assemblies as you perform the running torques required for proper adjustment. It's all in the manual. the one thing that he said that everyone overlooks to replace is the thrust washer and its' snap ring that is under the head of the adjusting screw inside the pitman shaft that sets the gear mesh between the teeth on the pitman shaft and the teeth on the working piston. Dennis Perkins 84 300SD One more question I have is should I remove this outside chrome strip or just try and slip the brush under it? The strip has to come off, at least partway. Things came to a head last night, when the wipers, already limited to high speed only, began cutting out entirely when I signalled for a right turn. Time for me to apply the replacement stalk, steering wheel and horn contacts I got from a late, lamented '70 250C at Lou's U-Pull-It. This morning dawned clear and chilly, so, after the cable guy had come and gone (I have finally broken down and gotten cable in my bedroom), I commenced working: 1) Remove screws holding left kick panel in place. 2) Remove bungee cord holding left kick panel in place. (The phrase jerry rigged was coined with Rommel in mind.) 3) Disconnect old stalk plug. Before pulling, check replacement stalk by plugging in. Huzzah! It works! 4) Undo center nut in steering wheel. 5) Lose nut and socket in steering wheel bowl. 5a) Curse Daimler-Benz engineers. 6) Pull steering wheel with gentle tug. 7) Pull steering wheel with firm tug. 8) Give big honking yank. Steering wheel pops free. 9) See 5a) 10) Examine horn slip rings and contacts. Yick. The shift column has, true to its nature, shifted a bit and the tip is digging into the outer ring. Fumble with plug until I get it to pass through the steering column cover. 13) See 5a) 14) Install replacement horn contacts. 15) Try to thread replacement stalk cable through column cover. Plug doesn't want to get with the program. 16) See 5a) 17) Get plug threaded, stalk screwed in and horn contact wires connected. 18) Go to plug stalk cable in. 19) Discover that cable is three inches too short to reach the socket. 20) See 5a), grand slam redoubled in spades. Vow to make hefty contribution to the Track Down 114/115 Engineers and Slap Them Silly fund. Consider that, given some of the design features of the 114/115, this may be redundant, as the engineers were obviously more than adequately silly. 21) Unbolt socket bracket. 22) Discover that socket slides into bracket. 23) See 5a) 24) Detach socket, connect to plug. 25) Carefully positioning replacement steering wheel, place on splines. 26) Give gentle push. 27) Give strong shove. 28) Whack the hub with a large socket and 1/2 extender. 29) See 5a) 30) Using mystic finger contortions, retrieve socket and nut from original steering wheel. 31) Bolt steering wheel down firmly. 32) Turn on ignition key. 33) Horn sounds continuously. 34) Turn off ignition key. 35) See 5a) 36) Unbolt steering wheel from hub to see if ring is the problem. 37) Ring ain't the problem. 38) Rebolt steering wheel to hub, unbolt hub nut and gently yank at steering wheel. 39) See 8) and 5a). 40) Glare hatefully at the tip of the shift lever column. Wonder if Phil is finished with Iltis yet. 41) Spend fifteen minutes or so fiddling with bits of wood, plastic and so forth to make an insulating cap for the shaft. 42) Finally strike on a bit of plastic pipe left over from an 80's vintage Erector set. 43) Slice a 2.5 mm chunk off. 44) Eureka! The rear deck is very hard to see over. And you're right, this trend is pretty big nowadays. It would be nice in that it gives you a bit of a shielded feeling from the driver behind you, but it is obvioiusly bad in the area of the visual field of the driver. Re: [MBZ] Lane change signals/soooo much trouble
You're not kidding! This point was brought to my attention big time when we drove a new Chevy Cavalier. They make it so sporty and appealing to the kids in the styling. The rear deck is very hard to see over. And you're right, this trend is pretty big nowadays. I hate the 'bunker mentality'. Gunslits for windows, car beltlines up around your neck. Bleah. Even most of the convertibles make me think more big sunroof rather than open car, the ass end raises up so high. Give me Falcons, Pacers, and good ol' 107 SL's! -- Jim

Flashing headlights means you want to pass. Headlights off and on mean you are going to yield, as in, its safe for whoever to pull back into your lane. LarryT wrote: you wrote:Flashing high beams signals the intention NOT to yield. Turning off lights momentarily signals that you DO intend to yield. Maybe you're referring to driving in Europe? My 40 years experience driving in USA (never drove in Europe) is flashing headlights *do* indicate an intention to yield. Such as flashing high beams when a 18 wheeler is passing so they'll know when to pull in ahead of you - or flashing high beams to let another drive know it;s ok to pull out, etc. Never have seen anyone turn headlights on/off to indicate anything. All my driving has been east of Mississippi - maybe you're on the left coast? the 5.6 will have the same issues except for some reason they are not quite at hard of cams and timing chains. Donald Snook wrote: Kaleb wrote: Watch out for timing chain problems. If it has around 130K and has not been done, it needs to be done. If it rattles for a couple of seconds when started cold, it is about to break. Can also break the slide rails and cause a chunk to jam in the chain causing it to jump. Will also need valve seals like the 6 cylinder. Bottom end is about bullet proof like the diesels. If its got 150k or more, changing the injectors will give you a smoother engine and better mileage. Well having heard these issues, I will probably just keep mine. The car I was looking at has 153,000. As it is, I have a car that is perfect mechanically, and I don't really want to get into one that is going to cost me $1000 in repairs. I wish I had time to tackle one of these chains, but I don't. Is this the same problem with the 560? Recently, I have been lusting after a 560SEC. Now, that is a special car, so I suppose I might be willing to buy one and put $1000 into it. However, I think the SEC's are going for exorbitant prices. Donald H. Re: [MBZ] Changing lanes and Mirrors
On a related topic.. Everyone knows how to adjust outside rear view mirrors, of course. Sit in driver's seat, lean to the left with head almost touching window, now adjust left mirror so you barely see the side of your car... For the right, lean right and do same adjustment.. You will see a couple of feet more to each side of your car, thus reducing the blind spot!!! The inside rear view mirror takes care of what's immediately behind you.. That's it Take care, Chuck Phoenix, AZ
