These bimmers exist in a whole different dimension than a Mercedes. I don't

I always wanted the following mini-pick-up kit:
1. Dodge Rampage FWD, rustfree.
2. Dodge Shelby Charger, good interior & running gear (same chassis as above).
3. Turbo Jetta, or better yet, a TDI drivetrain.
The early (approx '78-'84) Omni/Horizon etc could be had with 1.7L Volksbunny

AFAIK, the only Cal-specific emissions equipment was on the '85s, when
MBZ put the Particulate Trap Oxidizer on cars for California. (of course
that it meant that they needed to move several things to make room for
it, so several other things like the manifolds and air filters are
unique for that year/model as well.)

What about mileage effects? Is keeping the engine in tune more tricky

[MBZ] Problems Bleeding Clutch : Thanks

Thank You to all of you that posted replies to my 'I'm Having Problems
Bleeding My Clutch' post

Unfortunately, lack of time, facilities, and enthusiasm, got the better of
me so this morning I drove 10 miles across town and country traffic to take
my 190E to my local dealer - driving without a clutch

But the advices I got will be useful in the future

First time I've driven any distance without a clutch - not as bad as I
thought, but the traffic was not as bad as it could have been - even got
into 4th at on stage !

A couple of You that replied mentioned bleeding the clutch 'as it says in
the manual' - none of the CD-based manuals that I have for the W201 and W124
chassis have any pages dealing with a manual clutch - bleeding, ect

Does anyone have the relevant .pdf files that they can let me have, or maybe
a pointer to the filenames of the correct .pdf's, so I can do a search of my
PC ?

LOL
I've been feeling superior using my pickup truck to drag some beautiful oak
home recently.
I'd been considering trading it for a little SUV, my wife uses it to commute 20
miles a day and I thought she'd appreciate the better gas mileage.
If I'd done that I'd need to buy a better trailer, my little snowmobile trailer
isn't really up to the task.
That pickup is surely going to pay for its continued existance this summer.

Oh, and all winter it hauls snowmobiles around. In May we'll use it to haul a
new lawnmower to camp. At camp it'll haul us the 3/4 mile in which wouldn't
happen in some smaltzy AWD car. It'll haul trees to plant, rocks for the road
and bump start the tractor.
On that point, it'll BARELY bump start the tractor. To pull start a Farmall
Super M farm tractor we really should have a full size pickup...

If somebody is going to be too lazy to even change their own oil, they
should at least look under the car and see if anything is leaking out
and check the level before the leave the oil change place.

Some auto mag came out with their top ten list recently and for the 13th year

these little cars? Are they really good, as in reliable? I see alot of them
around. When did they come into production? What were the best years and models?

How much power am I really wasting at the resistor or LM317? I want to
come in under 5w, how much do I plan for at the resistor?

Given that you aim to run the LED's at a specified current, you can get
awfully close just by using Ohm's law, in this case P-I^2R. For the
LM317, also you lose 1.5I in it as well.

Re: [MBZ] 124 shaking in neutral, more observations

2007-04-10 Thread Peter Frederick
Motor mounts are easy to check -- if the steel trapezoid isn't visible on the
bottom side, they are shot. The bottom rubber must be at least 1" from the
frame.

You should also check the camshaft -- they are known to be too soft, and some
of the lobes can wear down badly. This will cause rough running that nothing
fixes besides a camshaft and rocker arms. Usually accompanied by "lifter noise.

Could also be bad lifters if it rattles.\

Fro what it's worth, I have the very same thing in a non benz car. I've
concluded the problem is the motor mounts. I'll change them in a couple of
weeks and my attention is on the 300E now, just going through it all and
learning the benz way of doing things. :-) I'll let you know how things
turn out with the mounts, if you haven't done yours already by then.

In my case, you are NOT making it up the driveway to get out in the winter
without four wheel drive. Repairing the driveway until rainy season is
over is a waste of time, and it's too long for paving it to be cost
effective, especially with the heavy stuff I tend to drag around on a

Some more careful observations showed that if I kill the engine at
high enough speed, the thing gets quiet.
There is also a noticeable high amplitude vibration (the sunroof
rattles) when sitting idling at a stop with the tranny in drive. Take
it to neutral, the rpm does not change, but it gets quiet.
Motor mounts, perhaps ?

got stuck in the driveway - in the ice - I used the explorer to pull out

I have to take a bunch of tree limbs and other stuff to the dump and I

Have you done the full inspection yet? That is, vac leaks (idle control valve
hoses, vac lines, boot between air flow sensor flap and throttle body, injector
seals, and injector holder seals), cap and rotor, ignition wires, etc? If not,
it's past time.

Also, the ABS light on all the time meains the OVP relay is toast or the fuse
is blown -- I'd replace the relay, $60 or so, and it may cure the whole
problem. Without it, you won't get cold start valve injection OR cold
enrichment.

I had similar annoying problems with my Mom's 88 TE, finally cured them all by
replacing idle control valve hoses (they sometimes split along the mold seam),
boot, injector and holder seals, and all the vacuum line ends. I ended up last
with a hot start problem (backfire, stalled starter, etc) that turned out to be
a bad cap -- carbon tracking from a camshaft seal and front cover leak.

If original, 'tis time for new ignition wires, too.

Not cheap.

So, I shipped the W123 off to Sandy A-go, with daughter in tow--good
riddance (to the car, not her). Anyhoo, prior to her departure, I R&R'd the
rear shocks, accessory belts, front tires, and voltage regulator. She gets
down to Centralia where her mom lives and calls me, asking how to start the
car. It seems that the battery had died. I swapped in a new VR simply as a
preemptive measure, though it had never experienced any charging issues in
the past--dumb move. Apparently that new German BAE VR was defunct and
kaput, having left this mortal coil at the factory--it had a build date of
1993. Yes, I should've tested the voltage output after install, but I was
super-pressed for time, and multi-tasking the whole shebang--my bad.

My question: Is there a way to bench test an internal VR, prior to
installation? Resistance? Continuity? Smoke?

Mathieu,

thanks for the pointers. I'm thinking you're correct in looking at the
sensors. Makes sense from the perspective of something failing overnight
(so to speak) and fits in with the symptoms going away after the engine

You mentioned the temperature sensor for the fuel injection. I can't seem

sensors listed for this car. Any chance you could be more specific or give

Re: [MBZ] OT: 12v lighting

2007-04-10 Thread Jim Cathey
So I spent some time looking at different solutions yesterday and
discovered that otherpower.com has instructions for making LED lights.

Yes, just know that their power circuits are resistive in nature
(even the constant-current LM317 supply) and operate by burning
excess voltage as heat. I've yet to see a switching regulator
for LED lighting, though I'm sure they exist. That would be
best for battery-operated systems.

For example, a 3-LED string runs about 10+ volts, about what
you get from a 'completely dead' 12V lead-acid battery, so the
excess voltage will be burned as heat. Assuming a fully charged
voltage of 14V, perhaps 25% of the battery's capacity will be
wasted in the resistors and/or LM317.

So right now it looks like I'll build my own light. For like $20 you get 50

parts to build a powersupply.
I'll wire up the LEDs in groups of 3 and then figure how many groups of 3 I
need to get the light output I want. Right now I'm thinking 3 groups of 3 but
we'll see how it goes.
Then later down the road if I decide I don't like the color temperature its
easy peasy to add a couple different color bulbs and get it just right...

Just to throw in my $.02 I'd look into CCFL lights that are
typically used for case mods, etc. White ones do exist, but are harder
to come by than the colored ones. No idea on wattage or anything
though... I think they are certainly bright enough at least (or would
be with a simple reflector for half of it).

If you're dead set on LEDs... look into anything that uses Luxeon
LEDs... I've played with a 3W one... was VERY bright. The datasheet
says they output 70-80 lumens. You'd need a 12V to 3V supply though.

http://www.luxeon.com/products/line.cfm?lineId=2

They have brighter ones too...

G'luck with it! Little projects like these are great fun :-)

1. They're neat

Because many of thier customers must see the oil drain out into the
pan.
Too many would doubt the oil sucker. Or maybe it's just because drain
pans
require no maintenance or electricity to run.

Every car has a drain plug, whereas only some can use a sucker.
Can the monkeys be trained to do it differently per car? Is the
cost of an occasional engine less than deploying and maintaining
sucker equipment? Enquiring minds want to know!

I do my own oil, thank you very much.

They do run right on the edge, that is why a constant current (not constant
voltage) pwm supply is required. Might be interesting to see what the input
voltage limit is on the typical Luxeon Star setup. Heatsinking is important too.

I'd check the cold start injector (when cold) to see that it is indeed
squirting fuel. You remove it from the manifold, re-connect the fuel
line and wire - hold it over a jar or something to collect the fuel

Re: [MBZ] Another reason to do own work

2007-04-10 Thread LarryT

Wilton,
I agree with you completely. I *always* am disappointed when I pay someone
to work on one of my cars. I guess I expect them to work for the mosy I
give them - and to treat the car the way I do when I work on it. If I see
something that needs to be done I expect them to tel me they found a
problem - large or small. Maybe I expect too much. But if we accept
mediocrity that's what the industry will give us.

I seldom let anyone else work on my cars. That's one [big] reason I sold
our perfect 99 Camry and bought a 91 300D.When I opened the hood on the
camry I didn;t see *any* freakin thing I recognzed, There's some of that on
the 91 300D but not nearly as much -

So far, I've been able to repair everything needing work. I expect it to
stay that way. With the Camry it would have gotten worse and worse with
fewer and fewer things I could work on myself.

Like you, I'm also disabled - I have good days and bad. When I was younger
I looked forward to working on my cars - not it;s become more of a chore -
but I still enjoy it.

Take care -

Several yrs ago, I drove my Caravan away from Sears after they installed
new
tires. As I pulled out of parking lot into street, I heard squeak from
lft

frnt wheel; 'knew immediately lugs were loose and eased slowly back around
into space I had just left. Mechanic came out with BIG lug wrench and
started to tighten them with wheel on ground. I made 'im jack it up and
remove wheel so I could inspect wheel, bolts and nuts. Slight bit of
tapered part of nuts had already been worn away. I decided it was
negligible. 'Could have been much worse very quickly.

About 7 yrs ago, I bought friend's 81 300D. 'Next day, I changed oil and
filters. 'Found oil filter and inside of canister DRY - no oil in it -
filter had not been changed in many yrs! Air filter was some
off-the-shelf

near nothing that was way too short, therefore, no air filtering. Oil and
air had not been filtered for yrs! 'Told friend about it next day; he had
paid some "fast" lube crook for new filters every 3kmi.

More and more for last couple of yrs as I've become nearly disabled, I've
had to get "pro" garage help. I'm not embarrassed at all to struggle to
front of car and lift hood for a good look at engine compartment before I
drive away. I find something undone, left out or loose EVERY time. Wife
asks, "Why don't you trust ANYBODY?" I reply, "Because they keep giving
me

reasons not to."

When somebody else works on your vehicle, ya better look at the area
worked

on before ya drive away if possible.

BTW, if it's OK to look over an airplane before I fly it, why shouldn't I
look over a car before I drive away with it, especially if somebody has
worked on 'em?

my $200 87 300E was doing that exact same thing, then the next day
cleared up and has not done is since.

Kevin J. Slater wrote:

I have a plea for the list. I'm trying to keep my Mom's 87 300E on the
road and I only get word when things are bad. Recently she called to tell
me that one day she went to start the car (was probably about 50 F that
day) and it would turn over easily but it wouldn't catch and run. She
stated that the day before all was fine and dandy. She managed to get it
started and came down to my house. She was there for several hours and we
went out to start it in my driveway.

When you could get it to catch and run it ran very rough unless you took
the tach up to about 1800 - 2000 rpms where upon it would smooth out. If
you dropped it down into the 1000 rpm range, if you could keep it from
stalling, it bucked and I could intermittently hear something like a
backfiring sound through the air cleaner (I was standing outside the
car).

If you kept the engine in that higher rpm range for about 5 minutes until
the coolant temp came up to about 60 C, then it would run pretty much
normally at all rpm ranges. Once warmed up there was no loss of power or
misfiring that I could detect.

I checked the air filter and it seemed normal enough. Not sure what to
check next. She did mention that her ABS light has come on now and
doesn't

go off. I could be connected or just a weird coincidence. She added fuel
injector cleaner prior to coming down to my house (about 35 miles of
highway). I thought about changing out the fuel filter, but that doesn't
make sense in light of the improvement in running once warmed up.

I would appreciate any ideas. The rest of the family is anxious to get
her

into some other car which she won't be able to afford and no doubt will
turn out to be a death trap tin can.

I've been around 302s in big cars that will eat a 560 SEL for lunch,

catch being an 86 is speed density so it falls into the black hole between
a mass air setup that has lots of aftermarket support, and the carbed 302s
which the sky was the limit.

If I want that much power I'll just buy a crate engine...
