Re: [MBZ] '76 240D PHX CL
I believe in originality and OE/OEM parts wherever practical, and with the resources we have in Rusty, Kaleb and internet searches, it is almost always practical. However, a york rebuilt has a very short life cycle/MTBF. A new York is a little better, but expensive. A japanese rotary used compressor, probably has more MTBF than a new York and will be a lot less drag on the engine. Look for a wreck with under 100k or with an obviously new compressor. To me, in the PHX area, a reliable A/c system is a big deal. A 115 240D probably never going to be a museum piece, and as long as the compressor mount is on the engine, it can always be converted back to a york if you decide to spend the money ($30k to 150k) to restore and show it. good point Bob R On Mon, Dec 27, 2010 at 8:46 AM, Dieselhead 126die...@gmail.com wrote: HP robbing. Re: [MBZ] '76 240D PHX CL
I have converted a couple of cars from Yorks to Sanyos using aftermarket adapter brackets and fittings. There is enough demand out there that the parts are easily found on the 'net and not terribly expensive. I helped a friend do a 108 conversion a couple of years ago, and even with a new compressor, all the parts and paying someone to charge it I think he had under $500 in the job. With the approach that AC work is either under $100 or over $1000 in most cases, he was pleased with the results. Thanks I will look at the Pinnacle Studio also. So there would be no advantage to buying the Platinum on that website with 8mm film? What is the Hollywood restoration stuff they have listed there? I am confused as to what format I should be getting. Platinum HD Process: 1080 HDV, HD-AVI (MJPG), ProRes 422 or DPX HD Files Silver Gold Process: AVI, MiniDV I think I want something that I can just put in the DVD and watch and also something that is compatible with video editing software like the Pinnacle Studio you recommend. Re: [MBZ] OT Video Editing Software Windows 7 64
It looks like Hollywood Restoration II is just a better restoration algorithem. Probably better color color correction but as its 8mm its probably of dubious value. If it were me and I were going to run it through Studio I'd probably want it on MiniDV tape. That way I'd have a good backup, then I could capture it with my MiniDV camcorder, Studio makes that part VERY easy. Otherwise I'd probably go with ProRes but you'd need to download a ProRes decoder to make it work. Studio will import the ProRes media and turn it into Studio Native media based on your output format (so if you're working in 1080i for instance it'll use whatever its native format is for that). Then edit and output to DVD or Blu-Ray or whatever. I *think* it'll even auto-upload to youtube for you. -Curt Date: Mon, 27 Dec 2010 09:03:40 -0800 From: Douglas jgi...@comcast.net To: Mercedes Discussion List mercedes@okiebenz.com Subject: Re: [MBZ] OT Video Editing Software Windows 7 64 Message-ID: d662b31a89624810ab414cbdb0121...@douglaspc Content-Type: text/plain; format=flowed; charset=utf-8; reply-type=original Thanks I will look at the Pinnacle Studio also. I recall buying RAM for a PPC 603 based Mac, and I can't recall what it used but it was quite esoteric and expensive. I got some used from eBay; new would have been prohibitively expensive for me at the time. I do think the newer Macs use more standard/cheap RAM. I have never had any problems with York compressors at all, but it has been a while since I have regularly driven a car with one. They used to be cheap to buy. They 900 it is. Although that is the wrong way to play it. You never tell them when they are ready to sell it for x amount to call you. You say this is what I can offer today. If they say know tell them they can call you if they want when they are ready to deal but you might not be interested then. In my case, the price starts going down on my offer if they dont take the offer when I offer it, or if they dont come back with a reasonable counter offer. in the case of crackheads and I make them a reasonable offer based in reality but they say know, after nobody buys it they call me back I now give them an offer that is lower than the first offer. :) there was a time when as far as I was concerned ALL video editing was on the Mac and it was all Avid or Media 100... These days I use WinXP because I'm not going to learn another editing app until I absolutely have to. At that point it'll be Media Composer. Apple burnt the bridge with me about 7 years ago when I called for support and I already knew the product better that the support guy did. As a professional company their support stinks, I'm always amazed people use it. If my computer is down and the answer is take it to the Apple store in the mall thats not good enough when HP offers 3 years ONSITE support for the same money. I don't know where OWC gets their RAM, but I have bought from them for years for any Mac RAM requirements and never had a problem. This is for desktops, laptops and servers (G3, G4 and XServes.) They have always guaranteed compatibility and offered lifetime warranty, and I've never had a problem or had to replace any of it. They have been a 100% Apple reseller for years, so they obviously know what they are doing. I would also encourage him to go to a G4 if he can, but if it's not local the shipping alone will make it cost prohibitive. Re: [MBZ] OT: Mac 10.2 server
It depends on who you were calling, but for the most part the support for their professional applications (FCP, Logic, etc.) have been lacking, IMHO. I have always gone through a reseller both for certification and support. These guys are usually on the front lines with the apps and are the ones who sold them to begin with. That being said, they typically (from my experience) have a lot more real world experience with the applications and are a lot more savvy when it comes to things that are out of the norm. I am a certified HP tech, too, and while Apple has always done well with their consumer product support, HP does a really good job with their enterprise stuff, which is their bread and butter. Finding (unbuffered) 512MB PC133 DIMMS which work in a Mac is not the easiest task... And when you do find them, they command a premium... Wel, maybe. After I picked up a Mac MDD dual 867 a few years ago, I maxed out the RAM to 2GB, purchased from REPC in Seattle and I think I paid about $25 per module. I have had zero problems with it. At the time they had all sorts of used RAM for sale. They are at www.repc.com and their email is r...@repc.com. I have subsequently upgraded to a dual 1.6 processor (OWC, I think) and the combination of this, the RAM increase plus a USB2 card makes buying a new box a very hard sell. This model is the last dual-boot machine and I still have a few OS9.2.2 files stored which I couldn't access if I bought anything newer. It is an older car, but even so, I don't think the conditions reflects a true 39,000 mile car. I think the rubber bits in the engine had a quick wipe down with an oily rag, but hard to believe some of the lines, bolts, and connects could look like that with such low mileage.
