Because renting makes good sense for some people. The DIY days are rapidly
going the way of the wooly mammoth. Most younger folks (gen x,gen y,
millenials) are incapable of understanding "lefty loosey, righty tighty."
(present company excepted) If you can't fix it, you have to hire someone who
can. That usually is not cheap. ‎Plus yard work, grass cutting, tree trimming,
leaf raking, fence painting, etc. Even owning a condo has it's own set of
headaches, especially when it's time to sell. Much easier to rent, and the
landlord miraculously takes care of it all. All they have to do is go to work,
and watch TV when they get home.

Re: [MBZ] SL500?

2016-08-11 Thread Floyd Thursby via Mercedes

Excellent reality alignment.

Relates to my plan to install a trailer hitch on the ML. While putting
the hitch on is no big deal (I have one sitting here to put on just to
hold a bike rack) hooking up the LIGHTS for a trailer is a MAJOR $job as
apparently something that controls the brake lights and turn signals
either needs to be replaced or reprogrammed so it won't have a
hemorrhage if you hook up/plug in trailer lights, and then I think there
is something that actually senses whether or not there is a trailer
there, maybe the ABS or tranny or both, which biases the brakes in some
fashion or other and rejiggers some other things. I can't remember the
specifics, my brain kinda shut off at some point reading about this.

I tried to negotiate installation of a hitch as part of the deal, the
guy almost ran away laughing saying that was like a $2500 job and I was
like WTF. He wouldn't even throw in a $200 hitch as that incurred
liability. YOW. It is apparently doable, but just a huge effort and
not entirely DIY. Maybe I need to buy wunnathem computers like you got,
at some point.

BTW glad to see your alife.

Floyd,

Compressors are common failure items on the W220s. They can be DIY rebuilt,

replacement.

"Airmatic" struts are sold as rebuilts. Arnott is about the only supplier I
know of that sells them, and they are pricey. A rear strut is around $350 and due to
weight will cost on average about $15-$20 to ship the cheapest method. Front struts are
close to $500/each. Short of physical damage, if one fails due to age, you can pretty
much expect the “sister” will be close behind. This means about $800 minimum to deal
with the rear axle, over a grand to do the front. They can be changed by a medium
DIY’er, but it’s a job that requires a few good tools and also has some risks due to
thread sealant that Mercedes used at the time of assembly. Stripped bolt heads are very
common.

If a strut fails the car is dead in the water and can’t be driven unless you
put rubber blocks in the suspension, much like the vintage air suspension on
the W112s and W109s.

The W220 spooked me because once I got into the DAS system (Mercedes diagnostic
system) I realized that there were literally thousands of data points in the
system, and much of the car’s operation was dependent on the functioning of the
data bus and everything connected to it. There are some known weak points in
the W220 systems that are literally switches in the CANBUS network. If these
fail, nothing can “talk” to each other, essentially rendering the car dead.
These are purpose built parts and unique to Mercedes. There are no aftermarket
sources. If one of these fails, you’re talking a $1200 bill to even start to
diagnose the issue, if there are other things going on.

The deeper I got into the DAS system the more I realized I had pretty much
relinquished any and all control to the car’s “brains”. There’s no cheating,
no brute force way to get a round a lot of this stuff. While it’s cool and
nice to have self adjusting seats and mirrors, or automatic headlights and
wipers, when these systems go south you’re pretty much relegated to being a
parts changer, and that’s only if you’ve invested in a DAS system to do the
diagnostics. It’s also required to configure some systems and parts when
they’re repaired or replaced, too.

I am frighteningly content with my W126, and even growing weary of the W140s
due to their sophistication. While the W126 and W123s are certainly nowhere
near as nice and fancy as the later models, they’re easy to fix, maintain and
troubleshoot when necessary, and best of all seriously reliable.

Carry on.

Re: [MBZ] SL500?

2016-08-11 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
Floyd,

Compressors are common failure items on the W220s. They can be DIY rebuilt,
but the nature of the typical failure mode (running continuously) often
destroys foundational parts that can’t be replaced, hence the need for total
replacement.

"Airmatic" struts are sold as rebuilts. Arnott is about the only supplier I
know of that sells them, and they are pricey. A rear strut is around $350 and
due to weight will cost on average about $15-$20 to ship the cheapest method.
Front struts are close to $500/each. Short of physical damage, if one fails
due to age, you can pretty much expect the “sister” will be close behind. This
means about $800 minimum to deal with the rear axle, over a grand to do the
front. They can be changed by a medium DIY’er, but it’s a job that requires a
few good tools and also has some risks due to thread sealant that Mercedes used
at the time of assembly. Stripped bolt heads are very common.

Same goes for the harbor fright compressors, and nearly all compressors,
as they pretty much all use cheepchineecrap compressors. Unless, you
happen to buy a Quincy Compressor. rather than low $$$.

The HF one I suggested needs the oil checked ever couple hours of
runtime. SAE 30 non-Det. works just fine.

A word of caution on your Husky compressor. I have purchased 2 of them
from

craigs list just for the tank. In each case the compressor was seized due
to lack of oil. In each case the seller did a giant head slap and said..
"it's my fault, I should have checked it."

Apparently, in each case, the compressor managed to pump oil rather than
contain it, to the point it ran out of oil and seized. Both tanks had a
large quanity of oil from the compressors.. 60 gallon tanks.. 5 HP, 220
motors.

I bought the tanks to make gas engine driven compressors to use at the
Ranch, with new compressors.

So, takeaway is.. check the oil in compressor way more often.. Word to the
wise.

This is the one I bought to replace the one that died (built in 1955):

http://www.homedepot.com/p/Husky-60-Gal-Stationary-Electric-Air-Compressor-C602H/205389936

It's been great so far (4 years). It self regulates to 150 PSI, I then
regulate the distribution pipes to 100 PSI, and have one other regulator
that I can plug into the end of the hose that regulates down to the exact
pressure I like in the nose strut of the Cessna.

Craig

If you are running an impact tool, you need volume, or CFM, capacity.
Paint gun, again, volume. Most folks try to run to high of a working
pressure when spraying paint. High pressures blow more paint farther,
but it doesn't stay on the surface being painted. It wastes paint with
over spray.. Choose compressor CFM accordingly.

For most home garage work, a 20 gallon tank holds enough air and volume
to inflate tires, or drive an impact wrench for small jobs. Larger CFM
capacity will equate to faster recovery to the working pressure.

What do those on the list think about air compressors?

What would be a good one to supply 125 - 150 psi?

I'm not sure how many CFM I would need; I want to run air tools and
inflate tires, maybe even some day run a paint spray gun.

Sure, a 60 - 75 gallon tank with a large two-cylinder compressor

Re: [MBZ] On topic: It's time for a new air compressor

2016-08-11 Thread G Mann via Mercedes
A word of caution on your Husky compressor. I have purchased 2 of them from
craigs list just for the tank.

Word to the
wise.

Re: [MBZ] On topic: It's time for a new air compressor

2016-08-11 Thread Floyd Thursby via Mercedes
Yeah if you want to run air tools that takes a LOT of air, likewise
spray guns (HVLP meaning High Volume Low Pressure). I have a roll-about
thing with maybe a 10-15 gal tank and a 220V motor that will recover
pretty quickly but if I am running an air tool it will not keep up if I
keep it running on something recalcitrant.

I also have a "portable" Dewalt with maybe a 4 gal tank for running nail
guns, inflating, and the occasional paint spray on something small. I
have tried an impact wrench with it, I can maybe get one tire off then
it needs to refill. It goes up to 90psi, has 2 taps and a built-in
regulator, a nice unit.

I would suggest one of the larger roll-about units (there are some
uprights that are fairly large tanks/compressors) or a stationary unit
if you will bring the jobs to it.

It's been great so far (4 years). It self regulates to 150 PSI, I then

The one I have, a horizontal-tank Craftsman puts out only 100 psi. All of

My '13 F150 has a large mechanical key with wireless lock/unlock buttons
also. If I forget the buttons and use the key to unlock the door, the alarm
sounds/horn honks until I start the engine. Most annoying. They give you a
key to unlock the door, then punish you for using it. No button start, etc.
In fact, the electric door locks and windows are the only options we got in
addition to the running boards.

2016-08-11 Thread Curt Raymond via Mercedes
Oh I forgot to mention that mine has a built in regulator. I've played with it
a little and it seems fairly accurate. For testing I set it to 40psi, then
pumped up one of my car tires until air stopped moving, checked with a tire
pressure gauge and got 39, seems pretty good to me.

All compressors will make 125 PSI. The variant is how fast you want that
pressure which is dictated by the compressors CFM capacity.

If you are running an impact tool, you need volume, or CFM, capacity. Paint
gun, again, volume.  Most folks try to run to high of a working pressure when
spraying paint.  High pressures blow more paint farther, but it doesn't stay on
the surface being painted. It wastes paint with over spray.. Choose compressor
CFM accordingly.

For most home garage work, a 20 gallon tank holds enough air and volume to
inflate tires, or drive an impact wrench for small jobs. Larger CFM capacity
will equate to faster recovery to the working pressure.

This one is a reasonable price/value at $179.  20% off makes it better.
Sometimes it goes on sale for $120.  The $69 on sale pancake compressor
sold a few years ago will do most air tools, but the one I bought 2 yrs

The motor can't overcome the friction of the cold parts. Hold the heat gun on
the head for a little while, once the casting is warm it'll run fine and makes
enough heat so it keeps running fine as long as you keep using it. The little
one I had did the same thing.

I used to heat it with the torch, never felt real good about it. Last winter I
picked up one of the cheap Harbor Freight heat guns, its safer and works better
too.

Re: [MBZ] On topic: It's time for a new air compressor

2016-08-11 Thread Curt Raymond via Mercedes
The $179 one is the one I've got. I think I paid $135 out the door.
I've had it about a year and a half.
The only reason I replaced my first one is I forgot to check the oil and ruined
it. Totally my fault.

This one is a reasonable price/value at $179.  20% off makes it better.
Sometimes it goes on sale for $120.  The $69 on sale pancake compressor
sold a few years ago will do most air tools, but the one I bought 2 yrs
ago can barely get out of its own way,  Thumbs down on the current one.

What do those on the list think about air compressors?

What would be a good one to supply 125 - 150 psi?

I'm not sure how many CFM I would need; I want to run air tools and
inflate tires, maybe even some day run a paint spray gun.

Sure, a 60 - 75 gallon tank with a large two-cylinder compressor driven
by a 5 HP electric motor would be great, but a lot more than I want

Re: [MBZ] On topic: It's time for a new air compressor

2016-08-11 Thread Curt Raymond via Mercedes
I'm on my second Harbor Freight unit. The first was a little unit that was
overwhelmed doing anything beyond tire inflation. Now I have a 110v 21gal that
works a treat and was pretty inexpensive all things considered.

The only issues I've had with it are that its loud and it won't start if its
below about 45F.  The later problem is easy to work around by preheating with
the heat gun.
I paired it with their 50' retractable air hose which will reach almost across
the street.
They make a 220v version which is undoubtedly better but I don't have a 220v
outlet in the garage. In fact the unit I have will pop the breaker if I connect
it via a 50' extension cord although it does fine on a 10'.Someday when I'm
rich and some other things get taken care of I'm going to run a bunch more
power into the garage.

A buddy of mine has one that is maybe newer 2010, 2011? Same basic car
I guess. The main thing about all the newer Benzes is the electronics,
if all the computers and actuators and bits crap out you're looking at
big dineros. Low mileage though, he might want to enquire on an
extended warranty, the one on the ML goes to 100kmi and was not that
expensive. I think it would be maybe 10% of the total cost on the car,
probably a reasonable expenditure.

That started with the F-16 back in the 70s I believe. Somewhere I have
some photos of the YF-12A (I think that is what it was called), the F-16
prototype, doing some maneuvers at Langley AFB. I was working at NASA
Langley as an intern in the Flight Research group where there were
various aircraft (airplanes and helicopters) that were being tested with
that sort of control system. Having a statically-unstable aircraft
enhances its maneuverability as it really really wants to do those crazy
things a fighter pilot sometimes wants it to do!

Bad credit means they're bad with money and don't respect the people they owe
money to. One of those people will be you. If they've already got bad credit
then screwing you won't hurt them any more.
Good credit means you pay your bills on time, it doesn't mean you have enough
money to buy a house...
Lots of money does not equal good credit. The people I know with the worst
credit often have the biggest paychecks, they just plow through it buying
stupid crap.

Probably not but I think bad credit is not as much of an issue around here, for
me anyway, renting to people, evictions would be. If somebody had great credit
why would they be renting, why not buy?

So we showed the house to prospective new tenants. They want the
house. Had them complete online application via service provided by

only the wife info was in there. She had chapter 7, many accounts in

That is all good. Hopefully the new battery, and knowing how to release
and use the "key" will prevent a recurrence.

If they "key" is like the one for our dogde, She may need to enlist help
to get the key out. The dogde one takes quite a bit of physical
strength to release. It takes a fair amount of strength to use in the
door also. There may be a way to get a real key for emergency use.

After your demo, see if she can actually use it.

WILTON via Mercedes

There is a small mechanical key in the fob, which I did not find until
the incident yesterday. The doors, glove box and trunk (I think) have
slots for it. I briefed her on it yesterday and will attempt
demonstration today.

This car does not have KEYLESS-GO (pushbutton) start - ya gotta have
the key.

I suspect yesterday's key problem was operator error or a combination
of op error and weak fob battery. Fob has a little red light that
flashes when fob works by pressing on appropriate "switch area" - lock
and unlock for doors and trunk. When I press my fob, the red light
flashes brightly; when I press "her" fob, the light is weaker (NO
SNICKERING!). I asked her to show me how she presses the fob; the
light flickered very weakly 3 of the 4 times she pressed it and not at
all one time. I noticed she doesn't press squarely on center of the
appropriate areas, and I'll try to brief her on that.

Meanwhile, I'm ordering fob batteries today.

There should be/used to be a "key" in the electronic thing. 08,
though may no longer have the "key" and might not even have a keyhole
in the door handle.

If your car still has the "key" in the dongle thing, you should teach
SWMBO to take they key out and how to use it in the door. Since that
apparently did not happen, I am guessing the 08 may not have the "key"
and may be "push and pray."

I refuse to buy anything that is "push and pray" I do not want the
lives of myself an others dependent on software when there is an easy
alternative, a physical switch. This stance will condemn me to older
and older cars or cheaper and crummier cars as time goes by. Long
live the 123.123. (240D)

Max Dillon via Mercedes
August 11, 2016 at 4:25 AM
Isn't there an "emergency" physical key? Seems that if both of you
carried one of those, problems with the fob could be easily overcome
in the short term so they could be diagnosed more comfortably later.

Thanks, Rich & Curley, I notice there are lotsa lithium CR2025's FS on
amazon.com; I'll have some en route tomorrow.
Another possibility is that she didn't press the fob just right, but
she said she heard the beep. Maybe, she didn't try the door before it
locked again. We'll see what it does tomorrow.

I had a triple dekka back when in Dawchestuh (Dawt) and had one set of
tenants, these two girls who played hockey (one was a goalie), who up
and left one day while I was at work, and left their car (an old VW
wagon) sitting in my driveway. Door was not locked but wheels were
angled and steering locked so I couldn't roll it out into the street
where the popos would have towed it. It sat there for quite some time
until one day it too disappeared. I had their security deposit, at some
point a few months later one of them called wanting her money back, I
told her she owed me money for vehicle storage for 2 months or whatever,
when could she get it to me as it was more than the deposit. Never heard
from them again. I got the realtor who sold the house to me to find me
a new tenant, single woman with 2 teenagers, they were great.

I was actually making money living in that house, the other 2 apartments
more than covered my mortgage, even with the hassle. Great country, America.

Re: [MBZ] Looking for new renters

2016-08-11 Thread Curt Raymond via Mercedes
On the other hand I was a very good renter. One time I had a check bounce, this
was after maybe 5 years of on time payments. I called the landlord right away,
he didn't even know about it yet. He laughed and said I was the only tenant
he'd ever had go so long without a bad payment and the only tenant he'd ever
had call him to apologize. I drove to his office (an hour each way) to hand
deliver CASH payment to be sure nothing would happen this time. He thought it
was hilarious.
The following year he called because he had to raise the rent. We'd been paying
$450/mo (this was '99-2005) and he says to me "Would $465 be okay?" uhhh, yeah,
we could handle that...

Re: [MBZ] '07 E320CDI

2016-08-11 Thread Curley McLain via Mercedes
That is all good. Hopefully the new battery, and knowing how to release
and use the "key" will prevent a recurrence.

If they "key" is like the one for our dogde, She may need to enlist help
to get the key out. The dogde one takes quite a bit of physical
strength to release. It takes a fair amount of strength to use in the
door also. There may be a way to get a real key for emergency use.

After your demo, see if she can actually use it.

They guys who believe software can/should run everything seldom have to
live with the consequences of those decisions.

2016-08-11 Thread Karl Wittnebel via Mercedes
Anyone building drag engines for serious competition is more than capable
of rebuilding a continental or Lycoming or what have you. My cousin is a
truck dealer and rebuilds airplanes and races cars also. There is no magic
to rebuilding any of those motors.

There are specifications of course. If the machinist chooses not to follow
them, then of course there could be problems.

I called Mike yesterday at metric about this issue. He said there are a few
tricks that you learn over time that might make a Mercedes-specific build a
bit better, but that if a shop reads the specs and follows them, and they
are used to working on diesels, they would be able to do as good a good job
on a mercedes as on any other engine. He also said that if the engine has
10,000 miles on it after the rebuild, there is nothing seriously wrong with
it.

FWIW,
Karl

A 12L or 14L big truck engine is really not very similar to the
OM617. Just because someone is really good at overhauling and
rebuilding a Cummins, Detroit, or Caterpillar engine does not mean
they will do well with the Mercedes.

They might - but it's a bit like asking a drag racing mechanic to
rebuild the Continental airplane engine. They are both gasoline
engines, can't be _that_ different - right?

-if mature adults (not college students), always perform credit check.

I have some rental contract samples that are downright harsh on the
tenant. Most contracts in a college town are very harsh on the tenant.
It is the only way the owner can have a chance against the rental
laws. You need a harsh contract, not the OK contract.

Measure twice, cut once.

Rent is an extension of credit the instant it becomes due.

Did you draft a new contract yet?

I suspect the "contacts" on those push buttons get "iffy" in time,
especially in a humid environment (like your pocket). I notice a need to
push more than once (or wiggle the button) after a few years. I've also
experienced zones of high RF background noise where I need to be very
close

to the car and press more than once. I've probably changed out a few good
batteries but don't know what else to do. Ebay has been a good source for
reasonable button cells; they have a reasonable shelf life.

Thanks, Rich & Curley, I notice there are lotsa lithium CR2025's FS on
amazon.com; I'll have some en route tomorrow.
Another possibility is that she didn't press the fob just right, but she

said she

heard the beep. Maybe, she didn't try the door before it locked again.

We'll

see what it does tomorrow.
