Just get the little 1/4” router. You don’t need a big one, it would be more of
a problem. The HF will be fine for a small quick job. If you want a better one
the dewalt or Bosch Colt is good. Porter cable probably make one too, they are
like $100 compared to the $20 HF.

The bits are where you spend the money.

I also read a thing that said Italians were housed at "Fairwiew, Iowa"
I did not find any other info t confirm this. Fairview is an
unincorporated settlement. Probably either FairFIELD IA, or the IA was
a typo and it was Fairview, LA, just downstream from Natchez.

There were POW camps on Lake of the Woods south of Kenora during the
war too. I am told that they even gave the prisoners guns and let them
go hunting. No worries I guess as these guys had it made in the shade.
No way they wanted to escape and go back to the war. They spent the
rest of the war being treated pretty well.
There was, until only a few years ago, one of the former prisoners who
owned a cottage in the area and came back every summer from Germany.

My '87 wagon cruise used to do that cut-out then resume thing, felt like an
engine miss. It would do it twice in a row shortly after engaging the
cruise, and then be fine for hours.

I used the CC troubleshooting steps on Jim Cathey's site to test the
actuator, and it was not terribly smooth, so I attributed the behavior to
the actuator.

That’s too much money for that car, even if it was in decent shape. The resale
on the early SLKs is horrible, almost as bad as the W220s.

I passed on a 2001 with under 100k, one owner, dealer maintained here in Tampa
last year for $2800.

Oh, yeah - these had serious issues with roof section seals, too.

Having dealt with damage in that part of a W124, I can tell you that it’s not
directly accessible, even with removing the latch and all the related hardware
in the area. This is a perfect job for a paintless dent guy, after Kaleb has
tried the heat gun/computer duster thing.

[MBZ] e300 cruise control

2018-01-16 Thread Kaleb C. Striplin via Mercedes
On my 95 E300 early in the summer the cruise control quit working.  I
swapped in a rebuilt Programa unit I had bought for another 95 that I
pulled off the road due to rust.  This unit was probably a couple of
years old, was not used more than a year.  So anyway, cruise worked fine
then I started noticing while driving I could feel it dropping out then
kick back in right away.  Just felt like a little surge.  Over the
course of a few days it got worse.  It then got to the point where it
would drop out completely and then sudden kick back in on its own a
minute or 2 later.  This progressed to dropping out, then kicking back
in 10 minutes later, then it just quick working all together.  I figured
it amp was bad again so I rebuilt the original amp with new caps and
resoldered it.  I installed it this past weekend and tested the car and
it worked.  Previously with this original unit it would not kick in at
all.  Today I drove the car and took it for a 2 hour drive and the
cruise worked great.  On the way back I started feeling the same
surging/dropping out it was doing before.  At one point it dropped out
for about 5 minutes then kicked back in.  After that it worked fine
again but sometimes could feel it dropping out for a split second then
kick back in. Other times it would go a long time and never do it.  So
basically its starting to do the same thing the rebuilt Programa unit
was doing.  I am starting to wonder if there is another issue. Could it
be something with the actuator or the speed sensor in the speedo?  Maybe
its loosing power to the amp, maybe a flaky fuse. I need to check that.

down, draw the line over the tape, and make cut through the tape, right?

I'm pretty sure that all the pieces I'm considering will either be on a

so I won't have the luxury of finishing the edge with a router. Flip side
of that coin is that the edges will be either caulked or covered with trim.

Re: [MBZ] OT FOR WILTON -- German Prisoners of War in South Carolina

2018-01-16 Thread Randy Bennell via Mercedes
There were POW camps on Lake of the Woods south of Kenora during the war
too. I am told that they even gave the prisoners guns and let them go
hunting. No worries I guess as these guys had it made in the shade. No
way they wanted to escape and go back to the war. They spent the rest of
the war being treated pretty well.
There was, until only a few years ago, one of the former prisoners who
owned a cottage in the area and came back every summer from Germany.

Re: [MBZ] OT FOR WILTON -- German Prisoners of War in South Carolina

2018-01-16 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
I worked for a lot of the local farmers when I was growing up, many of whom
were second and third generation German immigrants. They had nothing but good
things to say about the POWs, as I suspect they knew the POWs weren’t
goose-stepping had core Nazis, just guys that were more or less conscripted by
the political and social pressures of the times.

A number of the farmers would tell stories about these guys, like when they
first came into the area with the Army. None of them knew that the locals were
former fellow Germans, so when they got out on the farm or in the greenhouses,
the farmers and their families would start talking in German around them and
they would freak out (in a good way.)

Once they discovered they were surrounded by Germans they loosened up and
assimilated pretty quickly. I was told they were hard workers and got along
well with everyone they came into contact with.

Father in law was freaky about the whole thing. He was a hard core “man’s man”,
all tough and John Wayne like. Apparently he thought he was a pussy for
hanging around home and guarding POWs Stateside as opposed to being on the
front lines and killing Nazis. The few times he did talk to me about it I
discovered that he wasn’t even issued a rifle or sidearm for his assignment.
The Army didn’t consider the POWs to be dangerous, nor were they worried about
them escaping. Camp Atterbury was, and still is, in a very, very rural area.
You could easily get lost in that place and never be found.

The lines were hooked up prior to transmission work. All vac lines were hooked
back up following official diagram by the tech. Car came back to me with
starting issue that was not there before. I used another diagram from interweb
(BW) to trace lines. Used the data provided here to attempt fix and solutions.
I plucked brown tubes and checked them for goodness, then installed them
according to the diagram. Then I pulled the EGR hose.

The POWs went on work details for the local farming communities, and were

they were often allowed into the homes of local residents for social occasions

Re: [MBZ] OT cutting and installing Formica

2018-01-16 Thread Floyd Thursby via Mercedes
Put blue tape on both sides of the cut line to make the cut cleaner.  If
it is an "inside" cut I would clamp a straightedge to the laminate on a
flat surface (sheet of plywood or something fairly stiff on some
sawhorses for a "bench" top so you can clamp all around it) and run a
router with a straight bit along the guide to get an exact clean cut.
Just offset your straightedge guide from cut line by whatever distance
from the edge of the router base to the bit  and clamp it all with the
cut line just hanging over the edge of your "bench" so it is mostly
supported. A router cut is very clean and will be dead straight (or as
straight as your guide).  I find a saw does tear the cut line a bit,
even a fine tooth blade, so I have always used a router for the cuts.

Rick - question on the meaning of "both sides". Do you mean tape on the
top (visible side) and on the back of the formica, or something else? Tape
down, draw the line over the tape, and make cut through the tape, right?

I'm pretty sure that all the pieces I'm considering will either be on a
cabinet side (end of the kitchen island) or inside (under the kitchen sink)
so I won't have the luxury of finishing the edge with a router. Flip side
of that coin is that the edges will be either caulked or covered with trim.

What they said: I'd add this:

Since the substrate is glued up sawdust, I'd suggest putting an
underlayment of 1/4" or 5mm plywood underneath to smooth out the
sawdustboard before applying new formica, or you can pull up the
countertop and replace with 1- 2 layers of 3/4" plywood alternately.

Max -- I've done a lot. It's pretty easy but it makes a bit of a mess
in the cutting/trimming. Once you do it you'll never look at your
workbenches the same way!

Cut a piece about the size of what you need (strips to do the edges
first) using a fine saw as Rick says to cut your "blanks." Use contact
cement on the base and the back of your laminate, let it dry, put some
little spacer sticks on the base to keep the stuff from sticking, get
it sorta lined up where you want it (you'll have the excess from your
"about the size") then start pulling up the spacers as you go and
press the laminate down as you pull up the spacers. You don't want
"bubbles" in it so you have to press it down as you go, evenly.

Then use a router with a straight flush-cutting bit/bearing to trim
the excess on the edges flush with the edge of the base material.
Then do your top same way. You'll probably want a 45deg flush/bearing
trim bit for the front edges as the straight cuts like on the edges
(under the top piece) can be really sharp. You can also use a fine
file or a sanding block to just knock off that sharp edge a bit if you
use the straight trim bit. A little trim router ($20 at HF with a
coupon is your friend), bits are probably as much as the router as you
want those to be nice and sharp and good quality -- Lowes or HD for
those.

You'll want to really press hard on that stuff after you get it laid
down to bond the contact cement, I used to have a roller for it but
you can also use a block of wood and a hammer/mallet, or a rubber
mallet that won't ding the laminate. You just want some good pressure
on it.

If you want to cut a strip blank shorter you can score it with a razor
knife and bend it to break it fairly cleanly (you'll trim it off anyway).

I think Lowes/HD sell the stuff in some basic colors, if not there are
some supply houses around that can get you most any color you want.

Re: [MBZ] OT cutting and installing Formica

2018-01-16 Thread G Mann via Mercedes
Best method I've found is to glue down the formica with an ample overhang
and use a router with a "formica bit" to trim to exact fit. The bit has a
bearing attached to the tip which allows the bit to ride along the edge of
the material and cut flush.

Before you cut the top, glue on the edge pieces. The bit will then cut the
top piece right at the junction of the two pieces and leave a cabinet grade
finish.

To get nice straight cuts for the edge pieces, clamp a metal straight edge
to the formica piece, on top of a piece of plywood [straight and flat].
Then use a razor knife to score the formica along the straight edge [make
multiple passes, light pressure to start, keep the knife edge in contact
with the straight edge]. Slide the formica to the edge of the plywood,
reclamp the metal straight edge / formica/ plywood sandwich, and "snap" the
piece off at the score line...

Dress up the snap cut with a flat file, using a "draw cut" [draw, don't
push the file across the fresh edge to clean up the score line.

Formica is RAZOR SHARP... you can and will cut yourself badly along the
edges.. BE CAREFUL.

Good luck... coat the bench top and the formica with glue... let dry
lay some dowel rod across the bench, lay formica on dowels. adjust
position carefully then remove ONE dowel rod at end and make contact...
it will stick instantly, no second chances then remove the next dowel,
make more contact... repeat, repeat... Then, roll the top of Formica with a
rolling pin to take out all air and ensure "intimate contact" at the glue
joint surface It will never come off ever after that.

[follow instructions of the formica glue can]... ;))

Keep acetone handy to clean the glue off your hands..

[MBZ] OT cutting and installing Formica

2018-01-16 Thread Meade Dillon via Mercedes
I've got some kitchen repair jobs to complete, there are a couple spots on
our cabinets that have this white thin sticker-like material over particle
board, and it looks basically like shelf liner but probably with some
better kind of sticky backing. Stuff is over twenty years old and starting
to come off and look ratty, and rather than install new kitchen cabinets, I
was thinking of putting some Formica on the particle board in place of this
stuff. I've got to replace a piece of formica behind our stove top and
I'll have most of a 4' x 8' sheet left over.

Going to check out youtube for the "official" training video but thought
I'd ask here for tips and tricks and general advice.

My main question right now is cutting the stuff, do I need a special saw /
saw blade or technique?

My father in law was a guard at Camp Atterbury’s POW camp during WWII:

He was always embarrassed about it, as if serving at home was less than serving
overseas in a war zone, so he rarely spoke about it.

The POWs went on work details for the local farming communities, and were
treated well. I didn’t read the article, but I do know from other accounts that
they were often allowed into the homes of local residents for social occasions
and were well received. A local farmer I knew said some of them were really
upset when the war ended and they were being repatriated - they wanted to stay!

German Prisoners of War in South Carolina

Thomas and I were parked on the shoulder of a county road watching a
group of cheerful and energetic young men working in a field - I think
they were gathering and stacking loose hay. There was a large tree in
the middle of the field and when they took a break some were throwing
boards up into the tree knocking down fruit or nuts, probably pecans. It
was 1944 or 1945 and the young men were German prisoners of war.

The story of German prisoners of war in the United States
 and
in South Carolina is fairly well documented on the internet. When
American forces landed in North Africa in November 1942 the German
Afrika Korps found itself in a vise between the Americans on the West
and the British attacking from the East out of Egypt. The Afrika Corps
did not receive adequate support from Berlin and surrendered in May
1943. The Allies found themselves with 275,000 German and Italian
prisoners. Feeding and housing these prisoners in Africa was a rather
large logistics burden at the end of an already overloaded long supply
line. It was decided to transport the prisoners back to the U. S. in
Liberty Ships that would have been otherwise returning empty. These
ships were at great risk of being sunk by German submarines and perhaps
the general knowledge that they carried German prisoners gave them safe
passage. The value of the work performed by these men on the farms was
invaluable because of the obvious shortage of male laborers during the
war. Those farm laborers who were not in the armed forces could make
much higher wages working in the industrial war effort at the "Navy
Yard" in Charleston and elsewhere. The stories of how well the prisoners
were treated in the camps and whether they were happy to be prisoners in
America rather then in Russia are various and subject to interpretation,
and include an account of prisoners at a camp in Aiken "executing" one
of their own in apparent punishment for fraternization. The perpetrators
were reportedly convicted and hung at Fort Leavenworth.

There are conflicting statistics as to the number of German prisoners of
war held in South Carolina but the estimates range from 8000 to 11000.
An incomplete list of camps
 in
the U. S. lists only Camp Croft and Camp Jackson in S. C. Although the
camps were located in almost every state, they were concentrated in the
south because the climate was advantageous to the year round housing
requirements. A document from the South Carolina Museums
 provides
the following list.

There were twenty-one camps in the state of South Carolina alone:Aiken,
Aiken County--Barnwell, Barnwell County--Bennettsville, Marlboro
   County--Camden, Kershaw County--Charleston, Charleston County--Charleston
Army
Air Base, Charleston County--Charleston Port of Embarkation, Charleston
County--Columbia Army Air Base, Richland County—Coronaca Army Airfield,
Greenwood, Greenwood County—Croft, near Spartanburg, Spartanburg
County--Florence Army Air Base, Florence, Florence County, now Florence
Regional Airport-- Hampton, Hampton County, --Holly Hill, Orangeburg
County--Jackson, Columbia, Richland County--Myrtle Beach Army Air Base, Horry
County, now Myrtle Beach Air Force Base—Norway, Orangeburg County—Shaw Field,
near Oakland, Sumter County—Walterboro Army Air Base, Walterboro, Colleton
   County—Whitmire, Newberry County--Witherbee, Berkeley County—York, York
County

Missing from this list is the camp at Bamberg which I first heard of
recently from someone who grew up in Bamberg and remembers that the camp
was on the east side of town south of the railroad. The Bamberg Camp is
documented in the 1994 Fritz Hamer paper

published on the University of South Carolina Scholar Commons site.

In September 1943, when 250 German POWs were brought to a temporary
camp in Bamberg County, the county agricultural extension agent
wrote: "... there was almost a steady flow of traffic by the camp.

The issue is that the ad states "condition unknown". A bit of a gamble

If I did purchase this car, I would sub out the body repair to Dimitri to
give him some recreational welding to help him through the slow winter
months.

The official kit that used to be sold used a piece of 1/8" Stainless
steel, and had 2 copper disks to plug the air/exhaust lined if the EGR
was eliminated completely. I'd vote for at least 1/16" SS, but 1/8"
thick will be permanent.

I have "read on the internet" that soda can aluminum is too thin for
blocking off the EGR and presents a risk that it will go to pieces and
allow them to be ingested by the engine. Thin steel from a soup can is a
safer choice?

You're right. "Stirl" is still alive. His little sister Pat died in 2008.
His driving buddy "Inns" died in 1993.
I guess that explains why Innes Ireland's enjoyable writing disappeared from
Road and Track magazine in the early 1990s.

if it is then that wasn't the cause of your starting or power
problem, if you still have that. Failed open means just that it
is open all the time even if there is no vacuum to it. Cut a
piece of soda can and slip it under the EGR and bolt it back down
to be certain.

I used the 9mm hose to replace the perished one from EGR thing to Waste

the way lines were attached. I was sure one of the lines was not
hooked up, but now both were. Kill the EGR was an idea, so I plucked
that line. Fired right up after having already lit it off.

Explain please. If they were unhooked all the time then you would
not be able to shut the engine off with the key. How, where, when
were they unhooked and what were the results of that before any

IF it failed in the open position wouldn't it be open all the time even without
the vac hooked up? The only thing I can see the vac doing is opening it up
after the first start as the vac is building up. Then it gets held open all the
time, till the vac all goes away, which would give power problems when driving
also. It also shows that all the vac line routing on the engine is screwed up
cause the EGR isn't supposed to get vac except at specific times controlled by
the valves on top of the valve cover. At least on the 617.

What I want to know is did Clay change the brown lines around?

I can't really see enough exhaust getting through that small hole in the EGR to
cause hard starting but then the proof seems to be there. Also gives another
reason to block the EGR.
