On at least some T-61's there is a compatibility mode in the boot setup
screen that you may need to toggle. I have do to that on my T410 when

i have seen plenty of hard drives fail SMART tests but work completely
fine. sometimes it is just a matter of what testing they support. i have
not seen a bad hard drive make the computer shut off. i would be looking
at failed/failing components such as motherboard and daughter cards
including
cause
it to run too hot if that turns out to be the issue? Its bone stock, not
overclocked or anything like that.
