Re: [MBZ] The E420 Lives!
Nice tip Philip. I had a master machine shop guy tell me some of that many years ago but he didn't explain it and I failed to grasp it well enough to use it to my benefit. You did good, now I'll use it. Thanks Harry Reusing copper seal rings generally works fine _IF_ you anneal the copper before re-installing. Since copper work hardens, and hardens if it is heated and allowed to cool slowly (opposite of iron) then the process to anneal is to get it hot and cool it quickly. I learned this trick when working on light aircraft. 1. Fire up a propane torch (gas stove, ox-acetylene, etc) 2. Hold the ring in the flame. Don't use your fingers. :) I like using a wire 'cause it doesn't act as a heat sink and the ring heats up pretty evenly. 3. Once the copper reaches glowing red, quench it in water. (Be careful in sunlight. It can be harder to see the glow and its possible to make the copper molten.) Now the copper is full-soft and will easily conform to the sealing surfaces. --Philip ___ http://www.okiebenz.com For new and used parts go to www.okiebenz.com To search list archives http://www.okiebenz.com/archive/ To Unsubscribe or change delivery options go to: http://okiebenz.com/mailman/listinfo/mercedes_okiebenz.com

Pipe is about 2 inches diameter if my memory is right. Our 2 story house has a duct chase in one spot that permits heating ducts, plumbing etc to go from the basement to the 2nd floor. I used that as the spot for one of the main floor outlets. Our house has a full basement and the vacuum unit is mounted in the basement. Has worked well for about 25 years. Put a new motor in it a year or so ago. Think the old one just needs bearings and brushes so I kept it but SWMBO was very anxious to have it fixed and insisted we swap motors ASAP. It had become intermittent. Sometimes would not start. Ours uses the white pipe. I think if I had to do it over, I would use the clear pipe. I once had to find a blockage and cut it out to fix the problem. Clear pipe would have made it easier to do that. The blockage was a piece of dowel about 2 inches long from kid's toys. Re: [MBZ] Frankenheapery
You made my day Jim, I got up to 64* this morning, upset a little because of the chill and read your piece. I feel good now and can face the 80s later in the day without a pity party, even though I'll have to dig out a sweater. Thanks Harry Date night! We had a houseguest, so he stayed home to watch Daniel while Jill and I went to band practice. The weather was bad, and predicted to be so, and rehearsal (which was sadly necessary!) was cut short. We made it almost all the way home, but we ran into blizzard conditions and drifting on one road I should have been savvy enough to avoid. (I had gotten stuck there once before and there was a marginally better alternate route.) We were going OK even though visibility was terrible, paffing through a few drifts high enough to wash over the hood like waves, when we ran afoul of cars stalled at a stop sign at a bit of an uphill at the juncture to our road, and were forced to ourselves stop...and join the party. The car kept us warm, and the heater fan was working well on high, but the high snow-filled winds and low temperatures took their toll in spite of the covered radiator, and the engine temperature slowly dropped. After an hour and a half or so, punctuated with other arrivals most of whom could get away again, the county plow came by and pulled us and the others out. In the meantime our own road had become impassible, and we were so cold and disheartened (we'd both gotten out and pushed a lot, both our own car and others) that we headed the other way, with the wind, rather than wait to get snowed in again or bashed into, and took refuge for the night with nearby friends. By then it had gotten so cold and windy that the windshield was more or less permanently iced up and I had to drive with my head out the opened door. That added to the fun, and resulted in a rather snowy interior. And there were still drifts to deal with that way, too. But we got through and parked out on the street. In the morning the interior of the car was frozen solid, and I couldn't even begin to start it. I had the space heater, though, and I borrowed a long extension cord and a current bush and let 'er rip for an hour or so. That got the starter knob unthawed enough to start the car, whereupon we went home. That trip, in the light and with no wind, was uneventful. Most of the drifts had by then been plowed back some. The car actually acquitted itself pretty well, we were asking a bit too much from it. The now-ancient Hakkapeliitta 1 snow tires still worked well. Had I only gone the other way it would merely have been a bit of a hairy trip. As it was, it was an Event. -- Jim ___ http://www.okiebenz.com For new and used parts go to www.okiebenz.com To search list archives http://www.okiebenz.com/archive/ To Unsubscribe or change delivery options go to: http://okiebenz.com/mailman/listinfo/mercedes_okiebenz.com

Re: [MBZ] OT DIY water well
Max Thanks, this is the kind of information I need. I'm not sure how I'll get samples through the screens of the drill point. I know silt gets through and that may tell the tale. I also think when I hit sand, there will be a sound change from the cement mixer driving activity and quicker movement downward. After this next section of pipe gets down, I'll try to flush up some samples. Even if its still just clay now, I'll know it can be done. I'll dry and save the samples in zip bags and watch for changes. Thanks Harry When I had an irrigation well drilled, a two-man crew with portable drilling rig did the job. As the rig drove the well point down, it used water under pressure to lubricate the point, and most of that water came back up out of the whole, carrying material from the bottom of the well. When that material included ancient sea shells, they would stop drilling and test the well to see if it would produce water. The rest of the time the material was mostly clay and sand. I would say that if you can force water down the pipe and then examine what flows back out, watch for a change in material (i.e. from clay to sand or gravel or shells) and when you see a change, stop and test to see if you can produce water from the well. The crew I hired had a gasoline powered pump to apply suction to the well pipe to try to pull water out. My well went down to about 70 feet, but the 1 hp pump sucking on the top of the pipe could not produce too much volume - about enough water to run one sprinkler head. Driller pulled the pipe back up to about 40 feet, and then we got enough water to run three maybe four sprinkler heads, and called that good. Ten years ago that cost me about $500 for the drilling and about $300 for the pump and pipe and valves. -Max -Original Message- From: mercedes-boun...@okiebenz.com [mailto:mercedes-boun...@okiebenz.com] On Behalf Of harry watkins Sent: Sunday, November 07, 2010 9:39 PM To: Mercedes Discussion List Subject: [MBZ] OT DIY water well I am driving a well through my basement floor in the hopes of being able to reach good water. I'll keep it in mind. So if I understand correctly, there is not a pipe that goes inside my 2 pipe to bring the water topside. I have made a 1/2 foot valve with some brass fittings, a steel ball and o-ring. It stays attached to a 1/2 hose and pumps with a churning motion. It works with a short test hose but I've yet to find a proper o-ring to keep it from leaking down. I'm at a driving standstill. I've rigged my cement mixer to handle the driving chore and it broke. I can hear it working from all around the house while doing other things, rumble, rumble, rattle, rattle then thump. I get 18 thumps per minute. I was upstairs when Carolyn said. I don't hear your thing. I went down the elevator to a smell of rubber burning and found the belt melted and stuck to the motor pulley. I just unplugged it and left it for tomorrow. I bought this sears mixer in 1974 and it's already giving trouble. Thanks Harry Keep in mind, Harry, that the pumps on the page Mitch linked will most likely NOT work with a well driven with a point. For these, you put the working cylinder of the pump underneath the water level and actuate it with a steel rod that runs up to the surface inside the down pipe. The pump cylinder itself would be in a well casing or some such to keep the hole from collapsing. Re: [MBZ] OT DIY water well
Where are you located? Any idea how far down the water table is in your area? Newton, MS. Not sure of the water table, but there are live springs coming to the surface further down the hill. I guestimate from 25 to 30 feet below my basement floor. Anyone around you have a well? There was one near a pond, 63 feet below the surface of the hill I live in. I was told it went down 30 feet. In our case in Colorado, we were told there would be water at 300' down (with 6 plastic casing), but there wasn't very much of it and it wasn't very good. We ended up with a well 523' deep (with 8 steel casing, a lot more costly) and a 5 HP submersible pump to supply 10 gallons per minute. Going down through the basement floor means you will be able to use pipe sections maybe 10' long. That will complicate drilling. This is a DIY well attempt and I'm driving it, no drilling. You do want to get down below the surface water, because that can be quite polluted. I would guess 60' at a minimum. 60 is my guess also, but I started with only 42' of pipe, here's hoping. You might talk with a well driller in your area about how deep wells typically are and how far you need to go to get good water. I did and received a candid answer, we are not going to set up $100K of equipment with a three man crew and drill a 50 well. Re: [MBZ] 240D clutch saga continues
Curt, this is advice I followed from Cathey and Van Cleve. It worked for me. Thanks Harry Jim Wrote: You need a three-foot (or thereabouts) length of tubing that will slip tightly over the bleed nipples on the brake and clutch cylinders. Next you put it in place and crack both bleeders and then you pump the brakes some number of times. (I always seem to use the RF brake.) Close the bleeders and see if your clutch acts right yet. Repeat as required. This is a perfect time to bleed the brake system and put in new fluid, if you haven't done it more recently than two years ago. It's also a perfect time to hose off your driveway if, as always seems to happen to me, the hose pops off at least once during this procedure. -- Jim Steve Wrote: Since the bleed fittings are different sizes on brake and clutch slaves I have a length of clear hose, two small hose clamps and the appropriate size 1/4 socket (for the hose clamps), stashed in a zip lock. I figured it may be the ice cube size window relay up behind the instrument cluster, as I had this problem with my '84 300D some years ago and unplugging and replugging this relay resolved the problem. But since there doesn't seem enough room to get my paws in behind the instrument cluster to disconnect the speedometer, oil pressure line, and electrical connector in order that I may remove the instrument cluster and deal with the window relay. I pulled the LF door upholstery back off today in order to check the electric window ground and voltage. Ground is good and, when I was measuring the voltage across the terminal block on the door the electric window motor was making some faint noises as if it was trying to operate. I thought that to be odd, disconnected my voltmeter and operated the LF electric window switch and the bloody window operated. I checked the RR window and it operated as well. I reassembled the LF door upholstery and you guessed it, the LF and RR windows are inoperative again. Clue(s)? TIA. G. M. Re: [MBZ] Oil Geyser discovered enroute to ChowdahQ
Thanks Tom, I enjoyed that. The ending was great, the hero won. Hi, ChowdahQ attendees may recall that my arrival at the picnic was delayed until close to 1pm because I 'sprung an oil leak' enroute. Driving along in the 1975 W115 300D at about 65 mph on Interstate 95, I happened to glance at my oil pressure gauge (which I frequently do, of course) to see it down to between 15 and 30, (YIKES!) where it is normally pegged at 45 while at speed. Lordy. My first thought was of poor Angie Raymond when she lost the oil cooler line and toasted the engine. Not a happy thought especially since I was 50 miles from home, and still about 10-15 miles from ChowdahQ! Since the needle was steady at about 25 or so, I decided to make a run for it. I looked for the next exit (about 3 miles) and then found a gas station. Looking underneath only confirmed my fears there appeared to be a steady drip with engine off, and a steady STREAM with the engine running. Day um. It appeared to originate somewhere near the front driver's side of the engine, (oil filter assembly, dipstick, who knows) but I couldn't see the source. I doubted that it could be the oil filter, since I knew that hadn't been touched since BEFORE the PREVIOUS ChowdahQ!! :) I threw in 3 quarts from my trunk, bought another qt from the station ($4.99!!) and got directions to the nearest auto store which turned out to be Advance Auto Parts about 5 miles away. I left a little puddle for them at the gas station, and another at Advance. I bought two gallons of oil, and headed out via backroads for ChowdahQ. It was now ChowdahQ or Bust! :) I figured that since I used about 3 qts in 50 miles, I could make it to the picnic, and with two gallons in reserve, I could make it home again. No problem. :) So I arrived at ChowdahQ, had a grand time with all the guys and gals, and then headed out about 3:30pm for home where I had company arriving at 5pm and I was scheduled to do the cooking/ grilling. I envisioned myself arriving home, making a grand entrance aboard an AAA flatbed to a house full of hungry guests!!:) Damn the torpedoes, Full Steam ahead! So I took mostly back roads thru Rhode Island--- a very pretty drive, btw, although I can't say I was in the frame of mind to fully appreciate it at that point, with one eye on the oil pressure gauge the entire time! I also did about 35-40 miles on I-95. I actually arrived home at 4:50pm without stopping and without incident, before any guests arrived, making sure to park the Mercedes where it wouldn't do any damage to my freshly coated new driveway. and quite non-chalantly got right down to the business of preparing dinner. No sweat. I didn't even want to look at the oil dipstick. Damn that is a great car. Well, I didn't get a chance to even look at it for a week. (I have other cars.) I finally got it up in the air a bit, no leak unless it is running. OK, it's a pressure thing. Started it up, and sure enough, a gusher pouring onto the floor.Good Grief, Charley Brown! :) Tracking the leak to its source was no easy task, since I had to get under it and look up into a a steady stream of oil on my face/glasses etc. ... and down to the ground came a-bubbling crude,... oil that is, ...Texas Tea! :) I finally found the problem: a line running from the injection pump to the vacuum pump with a banjo bolt and copper sealing washers. It appears that the copper washer(s) was blown at the vacuum pump end, and oil was just pouring out. I shut it down and tried torqueing it a bit more no dice. That actually made it a little worse. I then tried to locate the washers at several local auto shops/ Autozone/hardware stores. Naturally, no one had anything that small... these are tiny, btw. So I ordered them from the local dealer, Carriage House Mercedes. In the meantime, I re-annealed the old washers, thinking I would reuse them if worse came to worst. I went to pick up the new washers yesterday. . there was a screwup somehow. Carriage House ordered the wrong ones, but, they found the RIGHT ones in stock on the shelf. (That was Grant, btw,... I believe Dwight knows him also.) So I finally got the chance to install them after work today and PERFECT! Problem solved. Took it out for test run.No leak. Hooray! So, after all that, blowing out 6 quarts in 120 miles, a harrowing, nerve-wracking drive worrying about blowing the engine and making it home.. the problem is fixed for a total cost of: $3.39. That is NOT a misprint God, I love that car! :) How can I possibly think about getting rid of it, after a performance like that! It really doesn't want to die! I am reminded of the famous quote from Genl. George Patton, upon hearing the response of the Commander of the 101st Airborne, trapped in Bastogne during the Battle of the Bulge, to the German demand for surrender:

Allan Here is my write up for the 85 TD. First make sure that's your problem, this is not one of those may as well deals, too expensive. I had to remove the whole shaft to find that I did indeed have a bad bearing on my 85 300TD. I bought a used one from sa...@silverstarrecyling.com for $125 plus $50 shipping. They just taped it to a 2X4 and sent it UPS. Here is my write up, no pictures: Subject: Drive shaft removal steps, 85 300TD From: Harry Watkins harryw...@gmail.com To: Mercedes Discussion List mercedes@okiebenz.com Date: Mon, Feb 5, 2007 at 2:50 PM Thanks to Peter and others, the job was made easy. While its fresh on my mind, I'll share the steps I took. Keep in mind that this is an 85 300TD and I've no experience with other models. I have the paper manual and read the procedure before hand, however, more than one model was covered and I got a little confused. Peter's answers were not confusing and all went smoothly after his input. 1.. Remove the exhaust system from the transmission to the bumper. Two bolts with nuts, ½ socket and ½ box end. Four rubber donuts, all near the bumper, I left one donut attached to hold up that end while I removed the flange connection. I used a screwdriver and a wiggle to separate the pipe. Lowered it to the floor and pushed it clear. The manual spoke of an exhaust baffle that mine did not have. I pre Kroil everything I work on but there is very little rust under this car and it probably was not needed.. 2.. I supported the transmission with a large piece of wood and a small floor jack, then removed the transmission rear support plate and mount. Four bolts going straight up, 11/16' socket. One nut above the rubber mount, ¾, I used a flex gear wrench. 3.. Disconnect the front flex disk. I removed the three bolts (5/8 socket) and nuts (11/16' box end) that left the disk attached to the transmission. I had to rotate the drive shaft once to gain access to the third bolt. The rear wheels were on ramps with a large floor jack left under the differential. I raised the rear just enough to turn the wheels. I ended up doing this again with the rear disk, so next time I'll remove bolts front and rear, then rotate the shaft only one time to gain access. I then used a tire tool to force the shaft to the rear and clear of the transmission. 4.. Remove the center bearing support bolts (two). ½ short socket with a 6 wobble extension. Both are straight up, but one side needs a little wobble to get a good fit. 5.. Disconnect the parking brake equalizer mechanism. I removed the spring by inserting the tire tool in the coil as a handle and gained enough slack to remove it and the V wire anchor. Needle nose pliers were used to remove a tiny cotter key from a small pin that released the cable coming from the cab. Now there was enough slack to remove the lever and one of the brake shoe cables to let everything swing clear. 6.. There is a welded plate across the shaft tunnel that keeps the shaft supported up front until you are ready to slide it out to the rear. At this point, I used bailing wire to secure the two shaft ends together so there was no chance of separation until I had it out and marked for exact rematch. 7.. Remove the rear disk. Same as the front, I left the disk on the differential. I forced it forward with the tire tool, dropped it down and slid it to the rear and out. I should have left it on the shaft for easier replacement on the bench. (oh well) Hopefully there are folks that will chime in to make this easier.. Stopping and restarting the engine did not reset it, I had heard that is required some times. Any ideas? Re: [MBZ] 300SD still being bad
I did what Jim said and built a tester with an ammeter from a flap. I left mine in the bubble package and did laparoscopic surgery to connect the wires to the meter, put two insulated clips on the other end and it answers the question, good or bad? IIRC about $20. Thanks Harry though I changed out a bad glow plug. I don't have an amp meter to test the current to the glow plugs, wondered if I should just get this new kit and replace the relay and all the plugs? You could. But an ammeter is a pretty handy tool to have. (This is not a job for the usual VOM or DMM.) The old-style automotive dashboard charge/discharge ammeter is good for this, if it's the 20-0-20 type with markings. One can be had at any auto parts store. That and a couple of short pieces of 12-gauge house wire and you're in business. (Hook wires to the ammeter. Pull GP harness connector and stick one lead into each socket [in turn] and poke the other against the fuse screw. Watch the current, it should start high and drop to half that over a second or two. All should show the same readings/behavior.) I got mine at a thrift shop. Walt, thanks for the information. This is keeper stuff. Harry Just wanted to let you guys know I'll be making a small run of replacement impellers for the aux pumps in a week or two. Got a cad model done up right now, going to push out to the cam program later today. The electric motor came right back to life after a good cleaning with the blowgun/wipeall wipes/etc. Now it's on to finding/making a gasket. These pumps are quite simple to rebuild if you're mechanically inclined, only parts that would be hard/impossible to get are the spring and shaft seal. Brushes look easy to replace/make also, but mine were good. If the armature windings are smoked, that's a different story... not sure if it can be rewound or if it would indeed be worth it. [MBZ] The wonderful 300 SDL
The 300 SDL is the best driving car I've owned and beats all the others in fuel economy. I've owned two 86 SDLs, an 85 TD, 85 300D Euro and an 81 240D manual Trans. The TD was second best for me, the wife liked the 240D. I believe the 86 SDL (non-CA) is the one that has less chance of blown heads and gaskets because it never had the oxidizer installed. I use Evans Waterless Antifreeze also and I think that gives me an edge from having head problems. The one I have now is within five or six minor problems from being ZD. When I opened the driver's door the reading went to 150 and back to 60 when closed, after the delay for the dome light. When I opened the trunk, the fuse in my meter blew when the needled maxed out. Re: [MBZ] Battery drain, 86 SDL
Jim, Max I pulled four fuses that got me to 0 mA. #2 which took the clock flux out. (a) Is drawing 25 mA. Front seat adjustment, jacket tube adjustment memory. (b) Is drawing 25 mA. Front seat adjustment, jacket tube adjustment. (nothing about memory) #15 Is drawing ~10 mA. One of the nine items it protects is Control unit, seat adjustment memory. What say you guys? Am I done? Thanks Harry Things that can draw static power: 1) Clock 2) Radio 3) Antenna 4) Central locking system 5) Alarm system 6) Dome light timer 7) Leaky alternator diode 60mA is pretty small for a bulb. P=VI, so that would be a 3/4W bulb. Any one of these candidates could be 'leaking' internally, and drawing more than it should. Most of these are fused, so if you can kill the load via fuse that's a clue that it's not #7, or some grotesque wiring harness or ignition switch leak. When I opened the driver's door the reading went to 150 and back to 60 when closed, after the delay for the dome light. 150mA? That's about a 1W light bulb. Should be lots more than that, more like amps. Two 5W bulbs in the doors, plus a 10W in the dome. Call it 20W, or 1.6A. You overwhelming the meter? On a Fluke, this is a $10 mistake. When I opened the trunk, the fuse in my meter blew when the needled maxed out. Does this sound like a wire short? Possibly, I've had them. People mis-wire trunk switch/light assemblies, and the wire through the hinge is vulnerable. There are three wires on the trunk light assembly (one's the alarm system); if you swap the wrong two the fuse blows every time you open the trunk. The normal load should have been a 10W bulb, or 850mA. The typical car battery is, let's say, 75 amp-hours. Translation: A one amp draw for seventy-five hours will _completely_ exhaust the battery. (And it would be unable to start the car well before that.) A 65mA load should do the job in 1100 hours, but if you burn a full quarter of the battery (in 250 hours) I'd say it was unacceptable. Ten days. A 20mA draw would be more like a month, which is probably acceptable. I don't know what the normal base load is on an SDL. Maybe I ought to, owning one and all, but I don't. I may have measured it, but in the early days I didn't keep a very detailed journal of what I did. It was only my second MB, after all. I can tell you that a variable 200-350mA leak in Jill's SL was enough to prevent starting if she didn't drive daily. A keyless entry system was about 10mA. I didn't note the draw after the fix, how smart's that? -- Jim ___ http://www.okiebenz.com For new and used parts go to www.okiebenz.com To search list archives http://www.okiebenz.com/archive/ To Unsubscribe or change delivery options go to: http://okiebenz.com/mailman/listinfo/mercedes_okiebenz.com
Re: [MBZ] Battery drain, 86 SDL
Thanks again Max and Jim. I was checking out a PO statement that he thought there was a drain. He listed four electrical problems that his Indy failed to fix after many $$$. Both seats had no movement. That turned out to be the seat relay and the aux. fuse holder had been switched in their slots. Driver's window was a broken switch that I glued back and swapped it with a rear window switch. Radio inop, but it was calling for a code. I have a Becker upgrade for that. Dome light inop when door is opened. He got a new switch assembly from Rusty that he hasn't delivered to me yet. When that and the passenger window is fixed, I can't name anything else that won't work. I'm not going to fool with the drain until I know its a problem. Like you suggested, maybe someone with an SDL can confirm my readings. I don't need or use the memory feature so I may be able to disconnect it. Thank Harry What problem are you trying to fix? I don't think that ~65mA is terrible, and if you plan to leave the car parked for long periods I'd recommend either disconnecting the battery or installing a float charger. I'm far from an expert on the front seat adjustments, but 25 mA draw on two different circuits with key off seems excessive to me. You may want to find a friend with car with same seats to see if they get similar results. I know that on my 124 wagon with memory front seat, battery won't last more than a couple weeks of sitting, but I've never measured the key off current draw. I bought a float charger for my wagon a couple years ago, and installed a jack under the driver's side dash to plug it in. There's a hot circuit under the dash on left side with a nice 10mm nut on a stud where I attached the positive lead, found a ground point somewhere down there. When I'm leaving town for more than a couple weeks, I park the car in the garage and crack the driver's window to feed in the extension cord. Plug the float charger in and leave it on the dash so I can see the lights to make sure it's working with just a glance from the garage entrance. Works like a charm. -Max ___ http://www.okiebenz.com For new and used parts go to www.okiebenz.com To search list archives http://www.okiebenz.com/archive/ To Unsubscribe or change delivery options go to: http://okiebenz.com/mailman/listinfo/mercedes_okiebenz.com

I have done 4 OM603s with good results by following the instructions. As with all injector work, cleanliness is the primary concern. After the deck is cleaned, and you start to remove the DVs, I back them out until the oring starts to show, then wash the DV and deck again. When the oring is leaking, it is crumbling. Lots of little black stuff is released and needs to be washed off. As you back out the DV, keep washing and blowing off the DV and deck. I take off and replace one DV at a time, up to the final torque. After the last DV is done, then replace the lines, bleed the air and tighten down the line at the injector. I also replace the DV springs while I am in there. It is just a precaution, and quite inexpensive. Don't replace only the leaking orings. You will be right back doing the job again. Taking off the intake manifold does make the job easier, but is not necessary. If I ever have need to remove the intake manifold, I change the orings, unless I know the orings are under 2 years old. I also order 8 orings, 8 copper seals and 6 springs to do the job. Sometimes it is necessary to pull one back out, and that usually results in a cut oring, and the copper seal should also be replaced. Having spares cuts a week off the duration of the job. (Waiting for more orings to be delivered) IF you don't have it, I will email the instructions I have accumulated from this list over time. You need to be clean and be careful, but it is not that hard of a job, and I think the dangers are overstated, unless you try to use air tools to install the delivery valves. Max wrote Maybe you should only do the leaking DV's in order to reduce the possibility of a problem? That's a good idea. I'll have to clean things really good to determine which is the primary culprit/s. Usually the engine is pretty clean but it's been so cold that I haven't been able to rinse it off. At the moment there's a thin film of diesel around all 5 DV hold down clamps. BTW, what kind of noise should I be listening for? I wonder how the factory/dealer does them to make sure they do it right the first time (also know as DIRTFT) ? I'm sure the factory uses a special tool to screw all 5 or 6 in at once, but if I'm very careful with my torque wrench I should be able to duplicate the torque on each DV pretty precisely, I think. I suspect the 3 stage procedure for torqueing is to insure accuracy so there must have been problems in the past. Is the metal on the IP where the DV's are installed perhaps soft which could lead to inaccurate settings? Re: [MBZ] Fuel delivery valve job
The lockdown straps are splined. You stack two on a DV and leave the ends facing out, their thickness is more than a 1/4. I then used either a 17mm or 11/16 crowsfoot with a long extension going straight up and past the intake. You have to connect the torque wrench 90 degrees from the strap ends, otherwise you would extend the length of the wrench and the torque would be off. I had the DVs snug so the straps did not have much travel before torque was achieved. Just curious --- Thx for the suggestion - - LarryT 91 300D ___ http://www.okiebenz.com For new and used parts go to www.okiebenz.com To search list archives http

Well put Larry, to bad information like this falls on deaf ears. Ever see man on the street TV? Folks can't name the two major parties, but someone registered them to vote and they do. If China ever decides to stop buying our debt - like most others already have - we'll be in the crapper. Does anyone like having China dictate loan terms to us? As the govt keeps spending more and more trillions, *someone* will *have* to buy our debt. Either that or crank up the printing presses and print more paper money. True, that will force inflation up - no more 5% home loans. And with the spending getting larger with every speech there's no end in sight. It may seem like the govt has unlimited resources but in the end they're just like any of our families finances. Spend too much and you'll reach a point that bills will go unpaid (which is pretty unpopular) and people who loaned us money for cars and houses will come looking for money or the stuff their money bought. At this point obama has asked for a debt ceiling of $13 trillion (at last count). BTW, Bush increased the US Debt by $3.9 trill in 8 years (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/National_debt_by_U.S._presidential_terms). Obama is expected to double Bush's debt. (http://blog.heritage.org/2009/03/24/bush-deficit-vs-obama-deficit-in-pictures/) Does anyone who thinks that's financially prudent? But I guess when someone is elected who has zero experience producing anything tangible, running a business, meeting a payroll, - even running a city or state - zero experience, that's to be expected. Something's wrong with this picture - and the US population is suffering because of that shortsightedness. The problem I see is the govt taking more and more power over the population. If obamacare passes, the govt will have power over virtually every aspect of our lives. Like, Say, that beer is pretty unhealthy - wouldn't be fair for you to practice poor habits and overload the national healthcare system. Got guns? Gee, they hurt people, they need to be controlled. Fat and calories in red meat? Start eating tofu. That car looks pretty unhealthy too - and is producing some kind of chemical we'll pay scientist to say are bad for you. Better get it off the road Unfortunately the words are there, buried in the 2000+ pages we were allowed to see. Who knows what the next one will look like - certainly not the people, not even the congresspeople who will vote on it. Once it's law we'll learn the details and they'll reassure us, Oh no, it may say that but we'd never do that. Yep, right. I wonder why we haven't been allowed to see the new bill or watch the procedure for melding the Senate and House versions? Hmmm... think its because they don't want us to learn the details or see the deals being made to buy votes? Does anyone think this administration would *not* use the same techniques to stay in office? Yep, I'm paranoid! Damn right I am! The healthcare bill will affect our financial stability also. Naturally the healthcare industry will not do well. Doctors will have their salaries capped as will medical facilities. No pre-existing conditions? Gee, if I have an accident, I'll call an insurance co and buy some then. Why pay for it month after month? Just making those evil corporate insurance vermin rich! Without a base to balance the income and payments, private insurance will go out of business forcing people to the govt plan. There will *have* to be a govt plan to cover those who see their insurance co goes belly up. What's another broken promise when it comes to the health of the US people? That's why it's important to pass *something* -- so they have a basis to add to as they introduce little bits of govt run health care in the dead of night. Cut doctors pay? Think the best and brightest will put themselves through 12 years of torture to become a doctor for minimum wage? No problem, we'll import a bunch from India and Pakistan - they'll be happy to work for $30K per year. Ya'll don't have to believe me - it will come to pass. Re: [MBZ] Lapping IP nozzle
Perter, very nice write-up, a keeper for sure. Thanks Harry Those are the delivery valves, and no , you should NEVER lap anything related to the IP. The seal is with a rubber o-ring at the fuel chamber and the copper seal on the plunger/sleeve set, and neither is going to wear anywhere else (except the plunger to sleeve fit, and the only fix there is a new set). Obtain new o-rings and copper seals. Clean the IP completely, no dust or grit or goo. Remove injection lines, then one and a time inscrew the delivery valve holders. Lift the holder up carefully, remove the spring and insert, then lift off the seal with a pick. Some seal at the base of the screw in part, some have a seal at the TOP of the internal body, make sure you put the seal back were it came out. Some people recommend replacing the spring as well, they are not expensive. Remove the old o-ring, roll the new one in place, grease with vaseline or silicone grease, place the new copper seal properly, re-install the spring, insert, and pressure valve body the way they originally were, then torque the pressure valve holder to 25 Nm, release, torque again to 25 Nm, release, then tighten to 30 Nm. No more, else you will distort the injection pump, no less or it will surely leak internally. Repeat for the remaining pressure valves. Re-install the injection lines, leaving the cap nut at the injectors (not at the IP) loose. Crank until no more air comes out, then tighten the cap nuts. Should start pretty quickly after that. It's unlikely the leak will cause more than fuel spillage -- also replace ALL the fuel lines between the tank and the suction side of the lift pump, and the hand pump if it's the old red handled screw down type -- the plunger seal leaks and lets air in. Air leaking into the suction lines will cause the fuel to run low in the IP, making it very hard (and eventually impossible) to start. Including me, there are many VW lovers on this list and if I can ever buy my VW Rabbit diesel pickup back, I'll need answers in that area. BTW, good choice of cars for your daughter. Harry - Original Message - From: Jim Arnott jr.arn...@gmail.com To: mercedes@okiebenz.com Sent: Monday, November 09, 2009 8:01 PM Subject: [MBZ] New member intro and 190e question or two Good evening folks, I am Jim Arnott, a long time VW owner (and list admin for a bunch of VW lists) and possibly a new used Mercedes owner. I live in NE Oregon and have been driving/repairing VWs most of my life. I have an opportunity to pick up a '92 190e 2.6 for not a lot of money. I have a single mom daughter that needs wheels and saving you all the long story, if we were to toss a shiny Merc her way it would please her to no end (and get her off my back!) The 190 that I'm looking at has oil in the coolant so it obviously need a head gasket. It's also leaking at the rear of the engine and I expect that that may well be a head gasket issue as well. Changing out the gasket doesn't look like too big of project, but I do have a question about one part of the process. The service manual 01.1101 I - 415/4 step 8 says Use impact extractor 116 589 20 33 00 to withdraw slide rail pin (74). Not having impact extractor 116 589 20 33 00 to withdraw slide rail pin, is there a work around? A substitute tool? Does the slide rail pin really need to be extracted to RR the head gasket? Second question: From what I've gathered through the Googles, head gasket failure seems to be typical on the 2.6 motor at around 100k miles. Is this a true statement and how likely is it that a simple replacement will cure its ills? There is no evidence that the motor has been overheated and the oil in the coolant is a relatively recent occurrence. The motor runs strong, has 3 bar oil pressure hot and the temp gauge sits right at 87 deg on a 20 mile drive at highway speeds. There is no cold pressurization of the cooling system so it appears that there is no compression leakage to the cooling system (A common VW problem.) Thank you in advance for you wisdom. Also, if your fuel tank is low and you park nose up on a slope, air will enter the system, BTDT. Harry The external fuel leak is the o-ring seal, doesn't affect anything but fuel milage, and then only if it's quite large. However, to replace the o-rings you must remove the valve holder, and hence must replace the seals as they won't usually seal when re- used. [MBZ] Coolant/oil tip from another forum
This was new to me so I thought it might help someone that suspects coolant/oil mix Take an old cast iron pan and put it on your stove, let it get to around 250 300 degrees and drop a few drops of your oil on it...if there is ANY water or anti-freeze in your oil, it will sizzle and pop. If its clean, the oil will just smoke. That's the way we do it where I work(CATERPILLAR), and we build 12 cylinder quad turbo enginesexcept we have a hot plate and an oil spectrology machine to see what and how much of certain elements are in the oil...but that is foolproof. I had a friend with suspected metal in his pan and he stuck thin magnets on the outside and forgot about it. I never heard the rest of the story, but there may not have been one. Harry If the only concern was some bearings and debris in the pan, I'd let sleeping dogs lie. Metal stuff resting in the bottom of an oil pan will stay there, unless there is a sudden and severe gravity reversal. I've disassembled lots of engines/trannys/pumps/etc and found wrenches/sockets/dowel pins/cotterpins . Also, I looked at the engine last night to see how difficult it will be to torque the delivery valves and while it would be easier if I remove the intake manifold I hope that won't be necessary - it will all depend on the height of the socket with the torque wrench attached. Hopefully I can find a way - I don't really want to RR the intake manifold but will if need be. Thx for all the great info - Larry 91 300D Does your business accept or need to accept V/MC/AE/Dis? Re: [MBZ] W124 Motor Mounts Related Problems
Thanks Max, sounds like it boils down to a last resort thing. If nothing else cures the problem, maybe a DV upgrade will. I've redone them on two SDLs and a 300TD because they were leaking externally. The last SDL was a learning experience, the wife was at a friends house and it would not start. To make a VERY long story short, it turns out that a low fuel tank level + leaking DVs + sloping driveway equals to air in the fuel system. Harry : Harry, Rough idle can be caused by internal leak at copper washer OR by worn elements inside the delivery valve. I suspect that you really have to know what you are looking for to identify worn elements inside the DV; new DV are pricey, but for the novice a strategy may be to purchase one and use it for comparison purposes? Obviously there are other causes for rough idle that also need to be investigated (fuel filters, air leaks, bad injectors, carbon in pre-chambers, valve adjustment on older engines, EDS problems on newer engines, compression, etc.) Max ___ http://www.okiebenz.com For new and used parts go to www.okiebenz.com To search list archives http://www.okiebenz.com/archive/ To Unsubscribe or change delivery options go to: http://okiebenz.com/mailman/listinfo/mercedes_okiebenz.com
Re: [MBZ] W124 Motor Mounts Related Problems
Larry, I hesitate to tell you this because I may get flamed :). I used the hold down straps in place of the special tool on my last DV job. I had the tool, but like Max said, it would not fit with my torque wrench (TW). I would place two straps on a DV facing away from the engine and position to leave room in the tightening direction. I then used a crowfoot on my TW to do the procedure. CAUTION, make sure the crowfoot come off the TW at 90 degrees so as not to add length to the TW operation. I used a long extension so my TW was above the intake. The shanks of the straps fit an 11/16 crowfoot (IIRC) and with two of them there is enough thickness for the wrench to get a solid grip. You could use the crowfoot straight out from the TW if you can find the formula to adjust for the additional length. I currently have 235/60/16 performance tires on my car. I found a set of nearly new Dunlop winter tires mounted. They are 235/55/17. According to an online tire diameter calculator I found that represents a difference of only .26% in diameter. So, I think it will be okay to use these. So, here are my questions: Since the diameter of the tire is nearly identical, I guess that means its not a problem to go up to 17 inch tires. Is that right? Has anybody had tires and wheels shipped? The tires are 28 lbs each. I am guess that the wheels weigh about 10 pounds each. So, that's about 150-160 lbs to ship. They are in Michigan and I am in Kansas. Just wondering if anyone has any experience with this or suggestions for economical shipping. Donald H. Snook -- next part -- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... I plan to do it myself and from what little I've seen it doesn't look too bad. Don't know how I would have found these seals were bad! They tell me the seals leak internally cause the problem I described - rough idle at idle after fully warmed up. Boy, this messes with my mind. How can one determine that a delivery valve has an internal leak? I could understand if they had looked at the parts and found some wear but that would have required a tear down. IMHO, if you go in there for any reason, you should replace the o-rings, seals and springs, perform the three step torque procedure and hope for the best. Anyone know how they do that? Re: [MBZ] Max's new ride?
Max, a combustion gas sniffer is available that will detect gas in the coolant system, (~$40). That may address some of your issues. Harry I still haven't been able to get a look at the car. My window of opportunity yesterday didn't match the owner's, so probably Wed. after work I'm going to take a look. What's the definitive test for coolant leaking from head gasket? If the car is burning coolant that would show up in engine oil analysis, right? If leaking out the side of the block/head joint, should be residue right? Is there an instant test for coolant in oil other than milky color? Can I see enough of the block/head joint or is it buried under stuff. Is there a common failure point of head gasket that I should look at first?
