95, ME! Geez.
I have disks and licences for all windblows from windows 1.1 on up, except ME
(Huurk!).
I was able to get the laptop to go into win10 safe mode with F8, just the once,
and chose don't load drivers, thus allowing Bios update.
Still won't get past Starting windows. New MB may be in the future, or BFH.
Thanks for your good suggestions and support, it is far superior to HP's.

Tried that method and I could not got it to boot.
The laptop did boot into windows without drivers loading (F7) and a successful

Maybe it is time for a new MB?

I have an HP Pavilion DV6-6153cl that will not load windows of any
flavor. 2k, Xp, Vista, Win7 and 10 have all the same failure, though
Ubuntu12 works very well. The Win OS installs fine and dandy but
stalls at the "Starting Windows" screen with pulsing four color win
logo. This is a known problem with some HP laptops and there are a lot
of fixes on the web. The hardware has been extensively tested and,
where appropriate, swapped out for known good and further tested in
another machine. The BIOS in this machine is by Insyde currently F.17
and the replacement one is F.1B. How the hell does one reflash the
BIOS without windows !? I have tried 12 different "fixes" and none of
them will load a BIOS file meant for a windows application. Trying to
contact HP is a study in frustration.

Is there a SIMPLE way to boot the laptop and reflash the BIOS from a CD?

hello, I have been using Carbonite for several years.  i am not happy
with it.  When files must be restored to a new computer or following a
repair, it requires a tedious restoration procedure (IMO) so I am
wondering if anyone has found anything they like better?

My subscription expires in March so I have a little time to analyze the
possible replacements.   Does anyone have anything they like better?

Thanks --

I use Mozy* on my wife's computer. Cheap and automatic. Of course it is
only as secure as your password, but when she switched computers last month
it was simple to get the files she wanted back.

On the house computers (storage) I use Cobian and a backup drive. It is
rather complex so might not be the best choice.

I have used Nero BackItUp in the past, it was easy but I gather the newer
versions aren't very good.

Best,
Tim
*Disclosure, I work for the company that owns Mozy, although in a different
division, and I started using it before I started working here.

[MBZ] OT computer question

2013-12-11 Thread Randy Bennell
As I said in my earlier post, I know little about computers and it
appears some of you do, so I am going to ask for some advice here.

About 3 weeks or more ago my computer screen informed me that my hard
drive was failing.
I called my computer fellow and he advised it was not likely a scam and
came by and got my computer.
Within about 3 hours it was back with a new hard drive and the thing
cloned so I should not notice any difference.

Seemed to be ok, but now I am getting some issues.

Microsoft had decided that my software is not genuine and I get multiple
messages daily advising me that I need to fix it. It won't update either
and I don't think that Windows Security Essentials is working.
I have tried to follow its directions on how to fix the problem but it
will not do it. Initially I was directed to download a file and then it
was supposed to download some larger file but it kept stalling out.
My computer fellow came by and had a quick look but said it was beyond
him and he would send one of his tech guys over. They have not shown up
yet. I have tried a number of different times to look online for
solutions but so far to no avail.

Anyone know how tI can make Microsoft satisfied that the software is
genuine?

I know all that I said above is pretty vague. I also know I have the
name of the file that Microsoft wanted met to downloand written down but
I cannot lay my hands on it.

The other issue is relatively minor.
I use a title insurance company that lets me fill in the forms and
print the policy online.
I cannot get it to print. It is something in this computer's settings as
I can log in at home and print policies there with no problem.

Sometimes if you alter hardware M$ decides your install is bogus and may
disable some functions. I think you can call them and resolve over the

That's not good. If you have done anything else hardware wise to the machine
you may have to reactivate Windows. If I recall correctly, Windows will let you
make two hardware changes to a machine and then it decides you are trying to
use their software illegally.

If you haven't upgraded the machine before, you will have to have the COA and
enter that. I have had to call Microsoft before to validate the operating
system on a computer I had done some work to.

You can also just call. Since it is an activation problem it should have
the number in the popup, and I believe activation support is free. The
couple times I've had to use it, the call has been relatively painless.
They can give you a new code if your current one is not working.

Yeah I did something similar some years ago when a HD crashed, I

Faster is debatable, the eBay one has 2x the RAM...

I'd probably go with this one though, I'd rather buy through a vendor if I
could help it.

It's a bit lower spec than the machines Curt was talking about, but I have
been very happy with an HP DX5150 as a general-purpose home server. Small,
pretty quiet, easy to upgrade. I have SATA and USB3 cards in mine so as to
run two big drives internally and connect to a fast external drive for
regular offsite backups. It acts as a NAS for music sharing, does
automated backups of all other machines on the network with BackupPC, and
provides a TCP/IP print queue using a garage-sale laser printer on the
parallel port. Not bad for $50 on fleaBay plus $200 or so to max out the
RAM and drives.

If the DX5150 can do all that as a server, it's more than enough for a
single-user machine as long as you're not a gamer. Put 4gb of RAM in it,
get a video card with HDMI out, a 1080p monitor (I like the ViewSonic
VX2453 for a decent cheapie), install Ubuntu, and you are good to go for
undet $500 all told.

We used the 6000 Pro SFF (small form factor) exclusively up until recently. We
now use the Z210 platform in both desktop and tower configurations.

They are both available in a wide range of configurations, so have an idea of
what you want to do with it before you go looking so you don't end up with more
than you need.

I usually recommend a generation or two old of HP's workstation class computers
(a step up from business class which is itself a step up from home type). The
smart money one right now is the xw8200 which is 3 generations old. Dual xeon
3.2Ghz processors, 4GB of RAM, WinXP pro. Great for most anything the home user
needs.

The xw8400 is a worthy machine for a bit more money, it can be had with dual
dualcore or dual quadcore processors for much less than its original price.

I'd consider the xw8200 the w123 of the HP world, the xw8400 is the w124.

I SCORED a few months ago and stumbled into an xw8600 that is a rockin fast
machine. I got mine super-cheap by accident.

The z210 is the lower end of the HP workstation line and quite a powerful
machine. The higher end of the line is the z810 which is a screamer, though of
course you'll pay through the nose.
