Now that you mention it, yes, I do remember hearing the change over from
ventilation blower to AC blower.

The 114/115 AC blower, separate from the heater blower, is much more effective.
It's a double-ended squirrel cage fan in the recirculation path, not the little
propellor fan in the fresh air path.

Of course, the blower changeover switch could fail, or the duct levers (which
operate it as well as the flaps) could be stuck.  Not everybody knows they have
two blowers, nor that they do different things.  Only one blower runs at a time.

Yes, one preferred to be in the shade and my covertible top was up
virtually all of the time.

I recall driving back to the motel in Barstow one time well after sunset
and pulling off the road by the airstrip. I turned off the car and the
lights to see the stars, which were much more visible there than they were
in Pasadena (another understatement!).

I was concerned about other vehicles coming down the road (though not very
likely), so I turned on the 4-way flashers. A very large jack rabbit
wondered what was going on and came hopping up slowly to see the strange
sight. I let him be and when I started the car to leave he hopped quickly
away.

Yes, that's what our W115 had.

Well, it was a whole lot better than the 1959 Alfa Romeo Guilietta Spyder
Veloce which I drove between Pasadena and the Goldstone Tracking Station!
(It was a convertible which had no AC.)

It did. The factory AC has a knob with a green insert that you twist to turn on 
the AC as I recall.

Not terribly effective, especially when the lame-o heater blower doesn’t do 
much to begin with.

If it’s leak free keep it r12. If having to replace compressor etc probably 
best to go 134. Done right 134 works fine.

If you have an original R12 system, keep it R12 or compatible. Do not charge it 
with R134a.

Yes it started being integrated with the 116 for sure, and I think before that 
in the 107. The 115 was added on after the fact with later models added at the 
factory, but still not originally designed into it as evidenced by the funky 2 
separate blowers.

A/C on the W123 is fully integrated, at least it was on my 83 300D (and W116 
300SD, for that matter).

Although, I think even the later factory setups looked like a bit of an
afterthought by MB. The AC used the heat ducting etc but it wasn't all
that integrated with the controls and the wiring under the hood looked
like a bit of an add on. Not complaining, just pointing out that the
next generation (W123) looks like less of an add on (although, you might
correct me on that as I have no experience with the W123. My one and
only MB has been the W115 300D).

I think that the later years of the W115 could be purchased with factory
AC. Our 1970 22D had a dealer installed AC unit when we got it, the two
1976 W115 300D's we had both had factory AC. How to tell the difference?
The MB service manuals covered the factory AC, but the unit in the 220D did
not look at all like the factory units.

Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) in Pasadena, CA. Much of my time was spent at
the Goldstone Tracking Station in the Mojave Desert north of Barstow,
where it got hot.

Pasadena, however, I would freeze because it was only 85F (29.4C). I had

I hear you. It hasn't worked in my old MB for a while but I generally 
only drive it close to home and with the windows down it is OK. I really 
do want to repair it though.

Really? Even here in the GWN, I would regret buying a vehicle that did 
not have AC these days. Years ago I bought a Toyota 4Runner without AC. 
I bought it around Christmas time and I guess it didn't seem as 
important when it was cold out. I regretted it come summer. I could roll 
down the back window and get air to flow through but that made it noisy 
on the highway and still not cool enough on our trips to the lake in the 
summer time.


 BUT, where you are, I should think it is a requirement. Even if it 
didn't work, it would be easier to repair it than to install a whole 
system from scratch. I think, in the W115 it was a dealer installed 
option so that might still be something that could be done (I think 
there are aftermarket kits available)  but the newer vehicles would 
likely make it more difficult to do.

the car but not now. It is on my list of things that need to be fixed 
but at least all of the parts are currently there and it is fixable.
