Yes, they put the 300 badges on because the 350s were known to have

When the problems became too frequent to ignore, they started calling them
300SD but still had the 3.5. I'm pretty sure a 1992 (first year for W140)

you know I am thinking it is probably something simple, wonder if it is
throwing a code for something.  It could be a really nice car for $1500,
wonder if he would take that.  Would have to go to Murder Beach to check
it out though, it's like a 2hr drive.  I kinda like the $500E300 though,
good fuel mileage, but this one looks a bit nicer.

Re: [MBZ] If not the SD....

2018-11-18 Thread Curt Raymond via Mercedes
No idea why you'd want a 616 or 617 when you could have a TDI engine and make
more power for less weight and size...
You don't even need the computer, put a Rover IP in it and you can make 150hp
with only 1 wire required. That one wire powers the fuel shut off solenoid.

Oh, yeah - the 2002 needed a crankshaft position sensor this week. $27
and five minutes to replace. Other than paying to have the instrument
cluster rebuilt when I bought the car because the pixels in the
display were wonky ($110 from BBA Reman with a lifetime guarantee) I
have not put dime one into the 2002 E320 in the year and a half I’ve

If you have to go Asian, go Nissan or Mazda. Avoid the Korean crap

One of them has less than 10k on it and the lettering and icons have

The cop versions got a shield of sorts added into them as standard production
after it was discovered that in a number of rear end collisions (high speed
ones where the cruiser was parked and someone rammed them from behind) the gas

flames, I believe.

SWMBA seems morally against the marque.

It clashes with her perceived identity as a nice person. That I gather to
myself the bottom feeder sort of car, and those tend to require a reasonable
investment to update, this is deemed to be a “waste” of money.

My perspective is otherwise. I see them as more fiscally responsible than
paying for newer cars which will probably require a significant investment to
keep them in good repair. The W220 was a decade old when it came my way. In
the four years I drove it, repair costs equalled purchase price. At the point
of SLS and cluster failure, I had tossed close to $5k in 12 months at it.
Those repairs would have upped it to another $6k. Car would not meet KBB for

Bought the wife a 2005 Mazda 6 new from a local dealer. Great car, put almost
160k on the clock before we parted and it had no repairs required until it had

Other than regular maintenance, I probably put less than $1000 into repairs in

Re: [MBZ] If not the SD....

2018-11-16 Thread Curt Raymond via Mercedes
You know Ford makes cars other than a Focus right? And a Mazda 6 is a size
bigger than the Focus.
My in-laws have an '08 Fusion which has been a really good car for them. It
replaced a Cherokee that was a money pit that I advised against buying and was
right. The Fusion has needed nothing but a few sets of tires...

My '10 Dodge RAM 1500 has been similar, mine has 125,000ish now and doing
great. Pulled through the snow MUCH better than a '15 Chevy. His truck sits

My guess is that she may not appreciate your customization of the cars.
I know my wife would not look favourably on the "hot wheels" car or the
imitation police car.
If you kept them stock looking, would they be less objectionable? A
reasonably shiny classic Mercedes is generally considered a nice car by
most folks who may have no clue about how old they are.

That is a defining issue for me. Seats in the car have to allow for a 24 hour
road trip where I arrive tired because I did not sleep enough, not that I am
wracked with pain from the torment of the seating. The family hates to ride
with me because of the forced march attitude. SEA to DIA was done as
overnights both there and back. Same with SEA to XWA, though that involved a
one way and then round trip within seven days. Both trips were in an S class.
I was tired mostest because i had to ride Amtrak for the initial return leg

My w211 (2005 E320 4matic) Is a,great car. Doesn't stir my soul like my
123's,& 124 but it is clearly a very well engineered MB. The 4MATIC with
ESP tied to ABS is,a great winter car here. It handles superbly & rides
so smooth over bad roads.

but one of the criteria was to haul 4 adults over long distances in

If you are compelled to buy Asian, then I suggest you look for a good
Lexus. I have a friend who has had 2 used Lexus and he absolutely loves
them. The first was the big sedan of about 2000 vintage and it was
written off after he drove over a chunk of concrete that damaged the oil
pan etc. He felt very bad about it as he had kept it in very nice
condition. It really reminded me of the bigger Mercedes sedans.

He has a newer Lexus now. I am uncertain of the vintage but likely about
a 2007. A very nice car as well but I cannot really say that I like the
newer styling as well as I did the older more boxy version. In any
event, he is very happy with it and it is causing no trouble.

He had, back when it was almost new, an E430 4Matic (maybe a 2002?) that
was a very nice car but caused them a fair amount of trouble. They did
not keep it long. His wife's car at the time as he was driving an
Infinity SUV. He had it a long while but rust caused an unrepairable
issue where some of the front suspension or steering attached and it had
to be junked.

Agreed. Sound advice!
Many of the asian cars suck in terms of comfort. (and they all suck in
many other ways)

My 66 bronco killed my (then young) butt in a 60 mile drive; the first
time I took it on the highway. In that time, I determined it was the
seat. I procured 2 volvo seats and mounting brackets from the
junkyard, modified the brackets to fit the frod, and installed. After
that, it was MORE comfortable than my MB. The frod seat went straight
to the landfill.

Well, for my .02, first rent the type of vehicle you want and take it
on a drive of over 2-3 hours. Then see how your butt and back and legs
feel. I have a 2008 Ford Escape that is a good little SUV, but the
seats suck big time. Great for short trips, but long trips wear you
out. If the vehicle you want is built on a truck frame, run away. And
look for a vehicle with seats that have padding at least 6 inches and
good lumbar support. Then you will be happy. You can fix the
mechanicals, but you can't replace bad seats without ruining the
interior appearance. My no joy is that Ford did not offer a better

Re: [MBZ] If not the SD....

2018-11-15 Thread Rick Knoble via Mercedes
How about a Crown Vic, Grand Marquis, or a Marauder? Big enough, dead nuts
reliable, and NOT Asian. Explain to SWMBO that they were built in Canada. You
want one newer than 2002, as they changed the intake manifold around then. Dan
P. had one, and I think Donald Snook did too. Perhaps one of those gentlemen
will opine. Here's some examples. I specifically avoided the cop car looking
ones.

Your list of asian cars is disgusting. All asian cars are disgusting for that
matter and I view their owners with disdain. Buy a BMW X3 or something.
