On your advice I ordered a set of Vredestein Quatrac Pro XL for her car. $689 plus what I will have to pay the shop to install them. I will refer her to you with any complaints. I do have to say that I checked Vredestein for her car and they are about the same price. Also much better rated in snow than the ones I was looking at, and that is a prime consideration. We don't get a ton of snow here but one of her complaints about the OE tires was they were bad in the snow so I don't want to have that go unresolved especially paying nearly $800. How are the Vredesteins as far as noise? That is her other complaint. I will have to ask the shop what they would charge to mount/balance if I bring them the tires. Run flats are a scam. They cost more, go flat more, and no one will patch or plug one. So you buy another whole overpriced tire every time you have a flat. And they are heavier rotating mass. All cost, no benefit. Everything gets new michelins except the 300tdt running hankooks for $85 a copy. They might be better tires than the michelins. I ran used tires for years. Thats at the New Hampshire Snowmobile Museum show which is always right around Valentines day. That was 2002 which I remember was pretty cold. IIRC 18hp makes it a 320cc although a '70 would be a 335. They also sold it with a 399cc that made IIRC 39hp or so which must have been insanely fast. Mine is the base model, no flip up headlight. My grandfather had a '69 320 with the flip up headlight that I continue to hold out hope I can find. My '70 sits behind the garage, it needs the area under the seat replaced, a little of the hood glass repaired, a new windshield gasket and the engine rebuilt again probably with an overbore this time. Its possible the rings are stuck which would explain 85psi compression but I'm not holding out too much hope on that. It runs but is awful hard to start. -Curt From: Randy Bennell To: Curt Raymond ; Mercedes Discussion List Sent: Tuesday, January 27, 2015 3:40 PM Subject: Re: [MBZ] OT Tires On 27/01/2015 12:12 PM, Curt Raymond via Mercedes wrote: > Heh, thats why I like my old Ski-Doo Olympique, 12hp, 30mph would be the flat > max top speed but you're 4" from the ground and theres 1/2" of suspension > travel. 25mph feels like 100mph. > Here's the beast at a show back in 2002: > http://deadsledwrenchers.net/skidoo/angieandmesm.jpg > -Curt > > We had one like that. Re: [MBZ] OT Tires
The SD really starts to feel comfortable at about 80, it just settles down and it is easy to creep it up close to 100 feeling very stable and comfortable as it speeds up too. These cars were built for that. I was driving back from Spartanburg Saturday, going 75 or so and getting passed by most everyone. Several were little dinky cars that did not look safe, stable, or comfortable at all, along with some Piouses. My truck feels fine at 80+, but I would worry about braking and maneuvering if I had to do anything quickly. --R On 1/27/15 11:48 AM, Donald Snook via Mercedes wrote: I wouldn’t drive that fast in anything other than a big heavy 7 series BMW or an S Class Mercedes. Curly wrote: "the reason is to see if they areREAL michelins with warranty or CLUB michelins that are crappy, and you should RUN AWAY!" Oh, good point. I did check the DOT numbers on the tires that are on my car just to see how old they are. They were made in 2008. I bought the car in July of 2011. I think (I can't remember exactly now) that it had 165,000 on it then. Now, I have 216,XXX. So, I have put over 51,000 miles on them and they were not new when I got them. So, I definitely cannot complain about these tires. Two of them are very worn and one was started to show a lot of cracking. I went ahead and put the spare tire on it until I can get my new ones. The spare was brand new but the date code on it was 2004. I had to put new shoes on the w220, and went for Nokians, in the hopes they would do well in the wet. Not the winter tires, just the standard ones. Instead of club store michelins. Not overly impressed, but they work. #1 boy needed fresh shoes on the w140 and ended up with Pirelli. For me, it is not just about lasting a long time, it is about performance too. I live in Kansas and I have to drive out to western Kansas sometimes for work. Have you ever driven in Western Kansas? It is like a nuclear war has happened. There are stretches where the road is flat all the way to the horizon and there aren't even trees. Seriously, sometimes you can see a farm house way in the distance. Total desolation. I want good tires for that area because I drive REALLY REALLY FAST through there and I want good tires because if I somehow blew out two tires, I would probably starve waiting for another sign of civilization. Re: [MBZ] OT Tires
All this talk about favorite brands of tires are. Does the choice of tire affect your driving pleasure, and if so, to counter any bias you'd have to ride blindfolded to see if you could tell the difference. Or is it just a matter of which one lasts the longest? YES, it matters. sometimes you can tell blindfolded to answer your prior rhetorical question, I'd choose Continental, or another Euro brand. crappy tires like the cheap ones from wallyland will make the car wallow. wandering, imprecise steering etc. Euro tires are best for a euro car. Tires affect handling a LOT!(don't believe me? then why do race teams change tires all the time?) The only tires I had fail that were made in Europe are Michelins. Every Michelin I've had has failed. NONE of the other European made tires Iv'e had has ever failed. I've had a BUNCH of them in several brands. Metzler, Contenintal, Vredestein, Kleber, Pirelli probably missed some... Tire building is an art. so, a lot depends on the artist who built your tire on that shift on that day. We used to run a lot of 7.50-17.5 truck tires. It was a "low volume" size, so apparently the factories let people learn on that size, then they would graduate to the "high volume sizes" We never wore out a tire, they always came apart, until we bought a truck with worn Hercules tires on it. Those ran and ran and ran. They were still on it when the truck was sold a few years ago. The tires were over 30 years old, and not checked or rotted. So, brand may or may not matter, but the art of the tire builder and the materials do matter, Size and shift matter because the tire builder matters. The tire builder is a crapshoot, as we are never allowed to know who built the tire. So shift and tire size are a crapshoot too. One brand may be good for 123 size, and bad for 126 size, or vice versa. My guess as to why the Euro brands (except michelin) may be better is because employment is pretty stable in Yurp. If you are a tire builder, you pretty much a tire builder for life, unless you really screw up. A guy is not a tire builder one day and a crane operator the next in Yurp. ___ http://www.okiebenz.com To search list archives http://www.okiebenz.com/archive/ To Unsubscribe or change delivery options go to: http://mail.okiebenz.com/mailman/listinfo/mercedes_okiebenz.com All posts are the result of individual contributors and as such, those individuals are responsible for the content of the post. As far as the warranty, I have never been able to make a successful warranty claim on tires. I have only tried to a couple of times. Whenever I have had a car with worn out tires, I just replaced them. The only time it ever worked was when I paid for a road hazard warranty and actually hit some big ole nail on the highway, then they paid for it. But, assuming you are talking about a mileage warranty, I have never had luck with that. the reason is to see if they areREAL michelins with warranty or CLUB michelins that are crappy, and you should RUN AWAY! My parents had a Jeep Cherokee that had the worst offroad tires I've ever seen, that thing would get stuck on wet grass. When those wore out dad put another set of the EXACT SAME DANG TIRES on. I said "Geez dad, those tires sucked offroad, why'd you get the same ones?" His answer was that they lasted 80,000 miles so they were good tires... Soured me on Jeep Cherokees which is probably unfair but my GMC S15 Jimmy was a way better woods truck right out of the box than the Cherokee was. Kinda wish I'd gotten to drive a stock Cherokee with better tires. The GMC was still way more comfortable and got better gas mileage although with the 2.8 v6 (vs 4.0 i6) it had way less power. -Curt From: Donald Snook via Mercedes To: Mercedes Discussion List Sent: Monday, January 26, 2015 4:54 PM Subject: Re: [MBZ] OT Tires My prior BMW 7 series had Continentals and they were great in everything except Snow. Re: [MBZ] OT Tires
That reminds me of my old high school friend. He had an old Toyota truck when he turned 16 and he was so proud of it. We were out one weekend and he wanted to buy tires. We went to a used tire place and he found four raised white letter tires in the right size. But, the two sets were from two different brands. So, instead of having, for example, goodyear in the front and cooper in the back, he put the goodyears on one side front and back and the coopers on the other side. His rationale was you can't see both sides at once so it least it matches when you see one side. The funny thing was the name of the tire shop was "MAYPOP" USED TIRES. I am SO glad my BMW didn't have the Staggered wheel package. The tires for that are 235 50 18 and rears are 255 45 18. Re: [MBZ] OT Tires
What tires do you like now days? Pretty agnostic these days. I like Blizzaks I like continentials, but they are usually now more expensive that some other good choices. In 30+ years and lotsa tars, I've NEVER had a continental go bad. I still think the ones made in die vaterland were better. It used to be that goodyears would always fail, but the van came with goodyears and we wore em out. in the last months I think one was was starting to wobble, but no complaints. 0ver 50k miles on them. Goodyears are still overpriced. For that money I think you can get michelins. The offbrand goodyears, (primewell) don't look that good to me. Never ran em. Put cooper CS4 on the van. We'll see how they do. I've had good service from generals, but the ones I've had are worthless on snow/ice don't like japanese brands except BS/firestone/blizzak Daughter had cheep chinee tires for a while, they self destructed. Most of the Euro brands are good, but no longer good prices or availability. Kleber, vredestein etc Put some no name tires from the farm store on one 240D last year. We will see how they do. The other 240D still has firestone snows on the back. THey are old, but doing well. SDL has no name tires on it that were on it when I bought it. Not high mileage tires, but it doesn't go far now. They are adequate. New tires would be worth more than the car. Quote of the week: I always said that "good tires (defined as sticky and round) are the best insurance you can buy." (and often the most valuable) most good tires are found in the mid range. Cheap ones are no good, expensive ones are a waste of money, especially when they don't stick or don't stay round. Donald H. Snook Snook Law LLC 5020 E. All this talk about favorite brands of tires are. Does the choice of tire affect your driving pleasure, and if so, to counter any bias you'd have to ride blindfolded to see if you could tell the difference. I'm a big fan of Vredestein. Biggest thing for me is they make summer tires that have a shorter life in 195/70r14. I hate the idea of putting tires that last 80k miles on a car I'm going to put 5k a year on. By the time they start to dry rot, I want them to be worn out too. Re: [MBZ] OT Tires
Kinda related... I just called my local tire shop to get a set of hard to find 19" snows for, um, a newer car. Run flats, big ones, Pirellis, $1800 installed. Yikes! When I get quoted $100-150/tire for a nice set of 14" tires for my cars, I don't complain. Last set of 14" tires I bought for a '84 300SD was back in October... I ended up with a good deal on Generals for $95 and I'm very satisfied. That car did well on the way to work this morning on the local snow covered roads around here, left by the early part of the big storm on its way tonight. Well over 1,000 miles! I jest, of course. Obviously, if in a few years I am ready for a new set of tires after only 25,000 miles I will have learned my lesson. How many miles in those 3 months? I can't remember the Chinese brand I've got on the Jetta but they've proven adequate. The rears on my summer set are still good 23,000 miles later, the fronts went bad as I didn't notice a bad tie rod end. The winter tires are the same brand and are actually very good in the snow. That car was terrible last winter but is quite sure footed in the snow now. I paid $300 for the summer tires, mounted, balanced with roadside service. Re: [MBZ] OT Tires
I am just about to the point of using only Michelin on these cars. I have tried kumho, uniroyal, several general tires and it seems to me they have all had problems,. One set of generals developed a bubble in the side walk, others have had I guess it would be slipped belts in that they get out of round and cause a wobble at low speed. It just seems that while Michelin is expensive they are simply the best. My tires were never rotated, as the S500 has staggered wheels, so you can't move wheels around. I also believe the Bridgestones were directional. I thought that was an old wives tale that had been disproven and rotating between sides was okay now. Re: [MBZ] OT Tires
Ditto - what he said. Age is important for tires. Tires make a big difference in how a car handles and drives. Don't skimp on tires. They are also a safety item, and your family rides in that car sometimes. Just because you are driving the last value out of that car does not mean that you don't have to maintain it and keep it "up to snuff". Re: [MBZ] OT Tires
I need to replace at least two tires and probably ALL 4 tires on my 2000 BMW 740iL. The tires on it are Michelins and they have been great tires. They were not new when I got the car, and I have put over 40,000 miles on the car. I am trying to figure out if it makes sense to buy 4 more moderately priced tires (i.e. not Michelins) or I can also buy 4 used michelins. The used Michelins have 9/32 tread on them (new is 10/32). So, they are barely used. I wonder if used Michelins are better than new cheaper tires. I don't want to replace them with 4 new Michelins, because for this style and size, its about $800. This car has 216,000 so I don't want to spend a ton it. AND in recent months I have put a new radiator in it, a new battery, new rear brakes, and replaced the passenger door lock/latch assembly for a total of about $850. Donald H. Re: [MBZ] Ot : Tires
You have a spare that is the same? Use that, buy a real cheap tire to replace it, then in 10-15k miles you will need a new set of tires anyway. Otherwise you can get another one to match, the tread diff shouldn't matter much. --R [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: > I just had a blow out on my rear tire of a 2004 Nissan Pathfinder. If not you might consider buying another wheel and using the current good rear tire as a spare. If you change sizes, you'll need to change all the tires.
