2015-08-30 Thread G Mann via Mercedes
Some years ago, while buying a "lifetime guarantee" part, I ask the parts
man, who happened to also own the company, "What exact does it mean,
Lifetime Guarantee".

His reply has stayed with me since.. Without smiling and with a straight
face, he said "It means that if you ever bring the SOB back, I'll kill you"
...

Pretty much sums up much of my experience since with stores that advertise
Lifetime Guarantees.

2015-08-30 Thread Rich Thomas via Mercedes
I would have no issues with sending it back. They are the ones who promote a
lifetime (thinking that is MY lifetime) guarantee as part of their marketing.
Plus from what I have heard they have absolutely no issue with swapping stuff
out.

Same with car parts. I buy a lifetime guarantee alternator for my truck, I keep
the truck forever, I need new alternators, I get one.

Re: [MBZ] Rebuilding Floor Jack

2015-08-29 Thread Greg Fiorentino via Mercedes
I managed to shame the Sears guy into replacing one of my (very nice)
ignition wrenches that I broke. He said they didn't have one, but I pointed
out a set which included the same wrench. He said he couldn't break up a
set, but I pointed out that the broken wrench broke up MY set. I was
prepared to continue in that vein long enough to cost them more in lost
sales than honoring their guarantee would.

This was a while back, and I no longer think of Craftsman tools as pretty
decent for the money; so seldom shop there.

But for many years now, I've been buying sockets from HF with broached-out
corners that look just like Flank Drive.
I think you're right in that it was patented instead of copyrighted. I've got
Flank Drive sockets dating back to the late 1970s so I'm sure the patent is long
gone.

My understanding is that very few items now sold under the "Craftsman" name
brand is now made in USA.

As the USA tool manufacturers closed up shop, or moved off shore [to China,
or Taiwan, or India] Sears has stopped the "Lifetime guarantee" almost
completely.

Harbor Freight, however, now has lifetime guarantee on the majority of it's
tools.. If you join their Inside Track Club...

"Was it Crapsman branded?" Yes, it was part of a crapsman tap and die set.

SK and Truecraft are wonderful and reasonably priced. I had a little
US 3/8 drive SK Socket set I carried in my original 190D. It came in
a little steel box. Truecraft makes a Metric allen wrench set that
goes up to 17mm. I am on my second set in 40 years. the first set
was stolen ~20 years ago. I have never broken one of them.
Truecraft 12" adjustable wrench is the #1 farm tool. To me it was
used more than a pliers or a knife.

snappy for special stuff. Used to buy special stuff from Mac, but
they disappeared from this part of the country.

Was it Crapsman branded? They've got a bunch of other crappy tool
brands now to get out of the warranty business.
Best thing I ever did 5-8 years ago was buy an SK ratchet, its an
excellent tool. Sadly I guess they've gone in the toilet now too but
the ratchet I got is fantastic. Way better than any of the Crapsman
ones I've ever had.
The Crapsman wrenches now are particularly egregious. They feel
terrible in the hand, rough and scratchy. The HF cheapies are
polished and lovely, strong too.

Harbor Freight sockets are actually very good and very cheap. The only thing I
dislike is that they are generally laser etched for size but they're cheap
enough so when the etching is rusted off its just time to buy new ones.

Ok, so I load up a 3-1/2 ton floor jack, drag it into the store, then
start carrying on about it having a lifetime warranty?

I can see that ending well. I think not.

Thanks, Grant.

Yes, it’s full of fluid. It leaks out of the main ram area, so I know that O
ring is shot.

Sears has a manual for it, but nothing on the inner workings of the cylinder or
valves.

There are any number of folks selling “rebuild kits” for these jacks out there,
but I wince at the thought of paying someone $50 for a couple of O rings. One
of the web sites I looked at today said that the Harbor Freight metric O ring
kit would have everything needed to reseal the cylinder and valves.

I’m going to swing by HF tonight and drop $8.00 for the O ring set. I’ll
probably tear into it this weekend.

First question: Have you added fluid to proper amount?
If it's leaking and fluid level is low.. it won't pump as it should.

Next questions: Does the Craftsman site have an exploded parts manual for
the exact jack?

Parts manual?

Parts available?

If you have the parts diagram, you can see how it comes apart.. order parts
and have them in advance..

O rings, seals, and valves and seats.. You will have an AS NEW jack...
shouldn't take you more than a couple hours.

Re: [MBZ] Rebuilding Floor Jack

2015-08-27 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
I have no doubt.

My biggest concern is if I can get the “quick raise” feature working again. I
suspect there are some check balls in the thing somewhere and they’re not in
the right place.

The O rings are the easy part. The O ring on the main ram is leaking, so I
know I’ll need to replace that for sure.

I seem to recall someone talking about rebuilding their old floor jack.

My Craftsman 3-1/2 ton floor jack is leaking and the quick raise
feature no longer works. I'm sure this is far from rocket science,
but I also don't want to be without a jack for two-three weeks,
either.

Any suggestions, experience, web sites, parts resource?

I talked to several local hydraulic places in Tampa today, and none
of them rebuilds jacks anymore. They said it's just not profitable.
