I cannot avoid adding my voice to the chorus of people who are extremely

I am not at all comfortable with D. Brauer combining whether you send your
kid to public or private school if you are a mayoral candidate. Family
decisions are often based on what is best for the child, not what is best for
the parent. If Mr. Rybak and his wife want to send their children to p
What a nice discussion...thoughtful, literate. Geez, the list is running the
danger of becoming one of them on-line magazines.

This has been a great thread, and I've enjoyed every posting. But I want to say
one more thing...
There are many reasons why we decide on a certain school for our kids. Or
whether we live in the country or the city, or about which vehicle we drive,
what kind of house we live in, whether we have b
I have two kids--one went through 12 years of Mpls public school (a
private, daycare kindergarten and 12 years in the MPS) and one has been in
MPS for 12.95 years (graduates this year).
We had our choice of schools. We had fun telling our suburban friends that

Ken Avidor has hit upon a great thread. I'm glad to see it's generated so
much discussion. I know Ken as an excellent and involved neighbor -- he even
comes to Kingfield meetings about issues many blocks away from his home. I
also know Ken is an enthusiastic Lisa McDonald supporter, and that R.T.
I want to weigh in on the discussion of public vs. private schools from
a personal as well as a School Board perspective.
First, as a parent, I feel compelled to put a human face on the
theoretical musings that the Minneapolis Public Schools (MPS) are
failing. It's simply not true! I have watc
I have some involvement with the schools, so I thought I too would weigh
in. I am a parent of 2 middle school kids. Both have very different
learning styles and needs. There is no doubt that most every parent

selection is a b

Title: race, class, public vs. private

I'm
probably nuts to wade into issues of race, class and public
education, race being THE most taboo subject in America,
followed closely by class. Then you add in the subject of one's
children and the choice of public versus private schools

Some of the posters have admitted that they don't have kids, and don't know
too much about the schools here. I have a son who will be starting
kindergarten this fall. Because I could, I have spent the last year looking

Finally, some discussion regarding the Minneapolis Public Schools. As
many people know I am a strong supporter of the MPS. I worked extremely
hard to pass the Small Class Size referendum last year. I am also one

I would suggest everyone chill on the topic of housing unit losses or
gains until Wednesday, when the Census Bureau will post 1990 and 2000
data for housing units for Minneapolis and other places in Minnesota.
I have the numbers, but they're embargoed until Wednesday morning.

I would like to add a few pieces of information from the census and permit

Does anyone have the numbers on how many students and teachers are in

I must be nuts for coming in on this one, but here goes...

husband and I drive there every day (carpool as much as possible). When I tell
people this, they look at me like I'm nuts. By the way, I happen to work about

The school subject is always a touchy one, at least for parents. Each of us
wants to believe we've done the best thing for our children, but where we
send our children to school also says something about how we live our
beliefs.
I'm either the wrong person to talk, or the perfect person to talk.
