Hi, Please find forwarded Ikeda's latest MSX price list. You can contact him at msx-ba...@mail.goo.ne.jp for more info. I could for example order it from Ikeda and then bring it to the Nijmegen MSX fair coming January (assuming there will be another one). Re: [MSX] switching r800 - z80 in TP
Hi Raymond, The solution to your problem seems to be very simple: Don't switch back to the Z80. Why would you want to switch back to the Z80 anyway? The R800 is more powerfull. Kind regards, Alex Wulms Op zaterdag 29 november 2003 19:20, schreef [EMAIL PROTECTED]: What we do is the following. R800 is running when we start or program We load the music file Do some graphic moves etc in VRAM to prepare the game Switch to Z80 as we want to start the game Start music and then the MSX hangs... When I remove the switch to Z80 it runs fine. When I remove the Start Music routine it also works fine. But everything works fine without the music. Then when I add the music routines, it goes wrong. So it looks like something in this music routine doesn't like the CPU to be switched at all. Hm, when exactly do you call these switching routines? While music is playing? IIRC the music routines make pretty extensive use of the IX and IY registers, as do your switching routines... Also, the MB replay routine does check whether you're running on R800 or Z80, but only when replaying a song is started, no tduring replay. It uses slightly different routines to OUT data to the Music Module and FM-PAC: the R800 routine has a few NOPs thrown in (or an other pausing mechanism), because the R800 would OUT the data too fast to the music chips. Now if this test happens to be run while you're in Z80 mode, but later on you try to replay a song in R800 mode, I can imagine things going kaboom. (Just 2 wild guesses) Does someone have a new routine for TP to play moonblaster 1.4 music? Nope :-( Eric ___ MSX mailing list ([EMAIL PROTECTED]) Info page: http://lists.stack.nl/mailman/listinfo/msx ___ MSX mailing list ([EMAIL PROTECTED]) Info page: http://lists.stack.nl/mailman/listinfo/msx ___ MSX mailing list ([EMAIL PROTECTED]) Info page: http://lists.stack.nl/mailman/listinfo/msx

Does someone have a new routine for TP to play moonblaster 1.4 music? Raymond, It might be that the R800 addresses the sound chip too fast. You might want to do the following in your interrupt routine to work around it: switchcpu(z80) call moonblaster_interrupt_driver switchcpu(r800) In this way, you still have optimal performance for everything outside the music routine itself. [MSX] XCC sources now available under open source license, at sourceforge
Dear fellow MSX fans, I have released the sources of XelaSoft Control Center (XCC) under the GPL open source license. The sources are available at sourceforge, which is an organization that hosts many open source projects. Sourceforge uses CVS (concurrent version control system) for the version control of the sources. If you want to make any improvements to XCC, you can let me know. The steps are simple: 1) Request an account for yourself at www.sourceforge.net 2) Provide me with you account name, so that I can add you as developer to the project 3) Use 'cvs checkout' to get the files to your PC. Do the modifications. Test the modifications. Use 'cvs commit' to commit the changes back to the cvs repository at sourceforge. More detailed info on the usage of CVS can be found on the pages of sourceforge. Re: [MSX] Colour loss
Op vrijdag 25 juli 2003 19:40, schreef JP Grobler: Hi I removed pins 4,21, 27 from the socket The colour problem remains Hi, I have checked the datasheet of the NMS8250, and it show that the NMS8250 computer has it's own PAL encoding unit. It does not use the composite output of the VDP. Only following four signals are used: csync (is the composite sync signal; hsync and vsync are combined) red green blue The four signals go directly to the scart (although through a small amplifier circuit) and they go to the pal encoder. The output signal of the pal encoder goes to the composite video plug and to the RF modulator (for the antenna signal). Both v9938 and v9958 have the four above mentioned signals. So you would expect them to be the same. However, I have done some search on the internet (via google) and found that the exact timing of hsync (the horizontal synchronization) slightly differs between pal and ntsc. I know (from the v9938 databook) that the v9938 comes in three versions. I have always wondered about the difference. I suspect now that at least one of those versions uses the pal hsync timing and that at least one of the others will use the ntsc hsync timing. In which case it is plausible that the nms8250 (and also other models for the dutch market) will contain the version with the pal hsync timing. My suspicion is now that the pal encoder in the nms8250 will get confused by the csync signal of the v9958, since that one will contain the ntsc hsync timing. This could explain the color loss on the composite signal. Is there any ntsc/pal/video specialist who can confirm the above theory? Because I'm not totally sure. Hi, (B (BPlease find forwarded an interesting message that I received from Bernard, (Bregarding future plans of MSX Association. (B (BI have translated it into English for your convenience. (B (BKind regards, (BAlex Wulms (B (B (B (BMSX Association is slowly starting the new hardware developments. The first (Bstep is to make an MSX cartridge reader for PC. This USB device will make it (Bpossible to use real MSX cartridges directly from a PC based MSX emulator. (BThe MSX association wants to work together with non-Japanese developers, to (Bachieve a world-standard rom reader. So, if Sunrise or other hardware (Bdevelopers are willing to participate, you can contact MSX association. (BThe software interface to control the USB MSX cartridge reader will be made (Bpublicly available, so that besides MSX player also other MSX emulators can (Bsupport the device. (B (BThe USB MSX cartridge reader is not only interesting for MSX emulators but it (Bis also the first step towards a new MSX. If a new MSX will be developed, (Bthen the new MSX will not have MSX cartridge slots. But it will have a USB (Bport. Re: [MSX] PSG REPLACEMENT WORKS FINE!!!
Hi, Ah. Heh, it's great to actually have direct communication with one of the VHDL coders out there, since contact with all others has to go through other people :). I just re-read the MSX print, and the part about the cooperation I agree, and it seems that this is one of the barriers of the japanese people for exchanging knowledge and sw/hw developments. So far, my role in exchanging info about ESE PLD in the public has always been rather passive. Just forwarding Ikeda's MSX print. But as you may understand from my other mail, I'm closer involved with the project then just that. Though, as with any other hobby projects, I do not want to promise too much directly into the public. To prevent the whole vaporware feeling if things take more time then originally anticipated. But if people want to join the ESE PLD project or have more info, they can always contact me or Tjujikawa directly in stead of via the mailing list. Note that Tjujikawa can write and read English. One thing that is not clear for me is if Kunihiko is a member of ESE or not. Yes he is. And also, if the ESE FPGA project belongs to the MSX Association or not. As far as I know, the ESE FPGA/PLD project is entirely independent of MSX Association. Though, I can imagine that at some moment in time, MSX Association may want to take a license on the design... Though, I can also imagine that MSX Association will totally ignore ESE PLD project and simply contact Yamaha, Toshiba and other former MSX chip manufactorers to put all their old chip designs together into a new MSX chip. Who knows what future will bring us? with the hardware developed by Tsujikawa, then I also want. For me it's not clear what is the goal of ESE. Hobby project. To build a new MSX in hardware without being dependent on big corporates. After all, eventually all our MSX'es will wear out and fall apart :-( Kind regards, Alex Wulms ___ MSX mailing list ([EMAIL PROTECTED]) Info page: http://lists.stack.nl/mailman/listinfo/msx

[MSX] Fwd: Ikeda's MSX PRINT
Dear fellow MSX fans, Please see here the latest MSX PRINT from Ikeda. I will soon also publish it on the MSX Plaza. Kind regards, Alex Wulms -- Forwarded Message -- Ikeda's MSX PRINT date on 31th July 2002 Some peoples asked me same thing. I must write same thing to them... Humm... Okey, this time, I reply it on my MSX PRINT. Jean asked me: I have some questions How is MSX doing in Japan? Is there still a strong support for the system? I heard there is coming a msx 3 is this correct? Here in Japan, MSX Associations is doing MSX Revival Project. Now, they're selling MSX Player to Project EGG and SYNTAX. Probably MSX Player is no.1 Emulator of MSX on Windows. And it's commercial software, NOT free price. MSX associations is getting money from EGG and SYNTAX per 1 copy of MSX Player. Project EGG is selling old MSX games. It's build in MSX Player Engine. These old games are only program(Emulator engine with Disk/ROM Image). Now, you can dawnload Ys II(PC-88 Ver) promo from EGG homepage. Yes, you can play old YS II on your PC. 1)Visit to: http://www.soft-city.com/egg/d020225_1.htm 2)Click the DAWNLOAD ASCII Corporation will publish MSX Player magazine at next MSX DENYULAND. Probably, MSX DENYULAND Organize committee will organize MSX DENYULAND in October or November. Now, I'm writtening article for it. You can get MSX Player from supplement CD of MSX Player magazine #1. I know that European/Brazilian MSX supporters don't like commercial emulator. But MSX Associations needs money to create new MSX. Who pay money to meke new MSX? I think that now our way is one of them. 1)MSX standard will revival. But people must pay money to MSX Logo, MSX-DOS2, ROM Image(like BIOS) and Emulator etc... And we can't get illegal ROM Image from Illegal ROM Image(I like Illegal ROM Image). Because SoftHouse still has copyright of them. When MSX will revival, SoftHouse will attack to Illegal ROM site. 2)MSX is dead complete. But we can use BIOS, Game and Emulator in free price. We need not pay money. It's look like paradise! But future is NOTHING. Which way do you like? Sander Zuidema told me that this is final chanse to revival. Yes, he is right, I think. A few days ago, ESE Artist's Factory of Tsujikawa sent me a E-mail. Because his ESE MSX System was finish. http://www.hat.hi-ho.ne.jp/tujikawa/esepld/esemsx.html IF someone of MSX Brazilian Crew will make logic board of ESE MSX System, Tsujikawa will very happy. And also design of Z80. Here in Japan, Tsujikawa must pay many money to design of logic board. Probably Tsujikawa must pay 50Yen... The most big problem is that Tsujikawa doesn't have CAD Software to design of board... IF Brazilian MSX Crew has CAD Software, Tsujikawa wants help from Brazilian MSX Crew. Tsujikawa hopes that Brazilian MSX Crew will make Prototype use with Spartan2E. We think that Brazilian MSX Crew is useing very old PLD chip and small capacity chip. It's NOT good enough to make MSX. Probably Brazilian MSX Crew can't get good chip... Do you want chip from Japan? Tsujikawa has spare of ALTERA 10K30A, 10K100A and EPC2. He needs not it. These chips are already old. But high grade of chip that now Brazilian MSX crew is useing. Marco Dal Poz is makeing BrMSX on a chip use with FPGA Xilinx XCS40XL-PQ240. This is very very small capacity... At first, Tsujikawa wants make MSX use with PLD. After, he will try cost dawn. PLD devise is progressing in day and day. Soon, we can use more cheap and good PLD devise. New MSX Print from Ikeda on the MSX Plaza
Dear MSX fans, Please note that I have uploaded the new MSX print from Ikeda to the MSX Plaza. See signature for url to the MSX plaza. Here is a short summary of the new MSX print: A lot of news surrounding MSX Player and MSX Association; distribution of SYNTAX games in Europe and distribution of Sunrise games in Japan. Explanation about commercial version and free version of MSX Player. Photo of FPGA MSX proto type. Editorial note: the Single chip MSX, prototyped in FPGA, is the next step in the MSX Association MSX revival plans. The MSX Association Single chip MSX project is independent of the ESE-PLD MSX project, which is a hobby project to build an MSX in FPGA technology. Re: Is this still MSX-related??? (Was: Ikeda MSX Print: More news on MSX Player)
] Pah. imho, realplayer sucks bigtime. Sure, it compresses quite nice and all, ] the image quality is nice so the base product is really great, but oh man, ] if you install it it tries to integrate with your system in every possible Funny that you mention this. Because the integration within the system is exactly what Microsoft also does with its applications like IE and media player. And they drive this integration much and much further. After all, they do have the source of the windows kernel to their availability. And currently they are witholding essential XP low-level programming information from real-software so that they can not make their streaming software integrate with XP. Note that I would have less objections against IE and mediaplayer domination if those applications would also be available for operating systems that really compete with microsoft. Like Linux. Or Palm OS. Or Psion/symbian. But they are not. And they will never be. While realplayer, netscape, opera and many other non-microsoft internet client tools are available for non-microsoft platforms. In this way, microsoft can leverage its desktop dominance to eventually gain a dominance into other markets via the internet. These days already many websites use so many microsoft specific extensions that they are hardly usable with non-microsoft browsers. And thus also with non-microsoft PDAs etc. Do you now understand my point? Re: Ikeda MSX Print: More news on MSX Player
] MSX Association could have seen this coming. If a GPLed emulator was their ] goal, they should not have started with fMSX as their codebase. Stating ] (approximately) two years later that Marat does not allow them to release MSX ] Player under GPL is a bit misleading. Perhaps that they simply assumed that they could simply buy the rights from Marat and then put it under GPL but that their assumption turned out to be wrong. Or indeed, something else might have been going on. That I do not know. ] Is MSX a trade mark? Then why isn't there a tm or (R) on my 8250 boot All printed documents (user manuals, MSX ROM bios handbook, MSX Technical book, etc) from before '88 or so mentioned 'MSX is a trademark of Microsoft corporation'. Books published as of approximately '88 mentioned 'MSX is a trademark of Microsoft and ASCII corporation'. And later, somewhere around '90, it became 'MSX is a trademark of ASCII corporation'. At least, for the books that I have seen here in Europe. It might be that in Japan, it has been ASCII corporation as of the beginning. After all, some very old documents mentions ASCII/Microsoft far east. There was a very close partnership between ASCII and Microsoft in the early days of MSX. ] screen? Did Philips, Sony etc pay royalties to anyone? Doesn't a trade mark Given the stuff above, I assume yes. I think that for MSX1 and MSX2, they had to pay to Microsoft, for 2+ it was divided between Microsoft and ASCII and for MSX turbo R it was to ASCII only. And on top of that they obviously also had to pay license rights for the MSX Bios, the MSX Disk rom, the JIS/JE stuff and all the other ROMs that are in MSX computers as part of the MSX standard. Or that the manufacturers payed everything to ASCII and that ASCII redistributed the royalties to the respective parties. That is what publisher companies (like ASCII) do. It's one of their main competencies. ] expire if it isn't defended for a prolonged amount of time? Can you even That I do not know. But given the fact that the MS X-box is called MS X-box is instead of MSX-box does say something... ] I know and I am very much concerned about these kinds of laws. So am I. I'm slowly to starting to realize the potential impact of this kind of legislation. It could eventually even kill open-source. Just look at how difficult it is to legally play DVDs under Linux. No vendor wants to make official drivers for Linux. The only way is via 'illegally' reverse-engineered code... Just imagine if in a couple of years from now, you can only download music and video's in windows media format. Then you will not be able to play those under linux. It is even more worrying if microsoft will succeed in killing real-player for streaming audio and video. They are doing a big attempt now by integrating their own streaming audio and video solution into Windows XP and making usage of real-player very hard under XP. If they continue like this, they will succeed killing real-player. Just like they effectively killed netscape... So from this respect, even living outside the USA does not help too much. Though, I will stop this thread now. It is becoming too much off-topic. You ] cannot give away something you don't own. That is exactly his point. Yokoi would prefer to make it open source but some program code writers (like Marat) do not like that. Which indeed means that it can not be put under open source. But that is not a problem anymore. Last couple of month, several people have been working on a brand new MSX emulator, called OpenMSX. This MSX emulator is opensource. It has been rebuild from scratch, based on some new concepts regarding communication and synchronisation between the various processors in the MSX. This new communication and synchronisation model will eventually lead to a (near) perfect MSX emulation. Current plans are that the first developers version will be released around Tilburg MSX fair. We hope that eventually many emulator and other developers will join the project to make this the best MSX emulator that has ever existed or will ever exist on the planet. ]] And Nishi paied many money to buy copyright of MSX from ASCII ] Corporation. Now, MSX Associations has Copyright of MSX, NOT ASCII Corp! ] ] What is copyright of MSX? MSX emulators are written using publicly ] available information and reverse engineering. There is no copyright ] necessary to create an MSX emulator. The copyright is on the base design. Normally, you need to take a license to build an MSX and use the MSX trade mark. Note that building your own products based on reverse engineering is these days forbidden in the USA, thanks to the 'digital millenium rights act', which is some new legislation around copyright, etc that was created somewhere around 1999/2000. The big lobbyist behind this legislation are monopolistic companies and industry groups like Microsoft, Hollywood. They want to protect their monopolistic intrests and are very afraid for what you can achieve via reverse engineering. After all, that is how Microsoft became the big bully that they are now... The US takes this legislation very serious. E.g., they arrested a russion programmer on a US developers conference, because this russion programmer worked for a company that had bypassed some PDF related security via reverse engineering. Fortunately for us, the US laws are not applicable outside the US. Though, there are currently big lobby actions ongoing to get the same kind of legislations approved in for example Europe. Don't know the situation in Japan. The main drivers behind the lobbying are the same parties. E.g., they want to try to get the microsoft digital management rights (MDMR) mandated by law. In the extreme, they want to achieve that all electronic devices sold in future must contain MDMR system and are not allowed to play/display contents that is not MDMR protected... If I interprete the company profile and strategy of Unison Capital correctly, then taking over ASCII is not such a strange move. It fits within their strategy of trying to build-up a fund that is profitable on the long term, provided that good restructurings are done at the companies that they invest in. After all, ASCII *is* a big publisher in Japan and does have the potential to become profitable again if run correctly and all pet-projects and other overhead activities are terminated. If it does, it will not be able to remove linux/repartition the hard disk Hi, Unfortunately this is not entirely true. There are known bugs in most unix flavors (including linux) on the market that can provide root-access to an attacking program. And although there are also known patches for most of these bugs, not everybody is aware and has upgraded his/her system to the latest security patch. Nevertheless, the fact remains that unix is indeed more secure by design than windows 3.x and 9.x flavors. And furthermore, although win-nt flavors can be configured as secure as unix-flavors, the out-of-the-box installation is as insecure as it can be. This is an intentional choice of Microsoft. They prefer to have a system on which an ignorant user can do anything he/she wants without any problems. But if the system would be secure, that would become impossible. In that case, the user should be computer literate enough to still handle the system. Thus, Microsoft has choosen to offer security for user friendliness. Though, a system that is so insecure that it enables any attack to the system is in my humble opinion not so friendly to the user. Before he/she knows, he can not use his/her system anymore at all. Surely ] if I plug MSX-AUDIOs into both slots they will conflict with each other? According to the MSX2 standard, you can have two (optional) MSX Audio's. One on C0/C1. The other on C2/C3. SME3 makes use of this optional feature. In one of the other mails, you can find a reference to a (dutch) text describing how to modify a Philips MSX Music module to listen to port C2/C3 in stead of C0/C1. The modification exists of installing a switch to switch between the two address ranges. Though, it also switches the I/O address of the MIDI ports in the music module. Re: SFG-05 register write routine
Hi Richard, ] Presumably when the RAM at #C000 - # is enabled, writing to this ] register will also write through to the RAM at location #, so that ] reading from this location will return the last value written to the ] register. (?) Writes to a secundairy slot register are not propagated to the subslots controlled by that secundairy slot register. The address decoder does not do a 'write select' or whatsoever on the subslots when accessing the 0x address. This is also useless, since reading 0x will return the reverse value of the secundairy slot anyway. See also my other message for more details. Kind regards, Alex Wulms -- Visit The MSX Plaza (http://www.inter.nl.net/users/A.P.Wulms) for info on XelaSoft, Merlasoft, Quadrivium, SD-Snatcher on fMSX, the MSX Hardware list, XSA Disk images, documentation, Japanese MSX news from Ikeda and lots more. -- For info, see http://www.stack.nl/~wynke/MSX/listinfo.html
Re: SFG-05 register write routine
] ] [#] ] It's accessed using MREQ# rather than IORQ#. ] Are you saying you don't have ] to select slot 3 in order to change it? ] ] Yes No. The secundairy slot register is contained within the primary slot! With other words: If primary slot 2 is expanded with a secundairy slot register (at 0x), you need to select primary slot 2 into page 3 to modify that secundairy slot register. Likewise, if primary slot 3 is expanded with a secundairy slot register (again at 0x), you need to select primary slot 3 into page 3 to modify that secundairy slot register. Furthermore, modifications to secundairy slot register in primary slot 2 are invisible to modifications to secundairy slot register in primary slot 3. Etc. ] Reading # will return the *inverse* of what you've written into ] it (don't ask ;-)). This is indeed correct. Reason: you can detect the presence of a secundairy slot register by writing to address 0x, reading back the value and checking if it has become inversed. If yes, then a secundairy slot is present. This is used by the memory search routine of MSX in the ROM-Bios, which is executed as part of the reset routine. The result of this search is placed in system area, where it remains available for all other programs. Though, in stead of using special commands to look at the directories and copy files from them, you can also build FAT support into the uzix kernel. Such that you can do for example: mount /dev/scsia0 /msx_data Or whatever you want to call your filesystem. Obviously you would put the line in /etc/fstab so that the mount is done automatically at boot time. In such way you do not have to remember the SCSI IDs or partition numbers afterwards anymore. No. But I can mail you ramturbo.com and romturbo.com if you want to investigate them. It is ofcourse nice to have this functionality integrated in your emulator. Please note that you can also advise your ST users to boot the ST in DOS1 mode. That will also free the 32kB of RAM used by DOS2 itself. In that case, you only have to make a very simple modification to your emulator: If MSX turbo R booted in DOS2 mode: keep your memory management as it is. If booted in DOS1 mode: switch to R800 ROM mode and search all available memory yourself. In that case, you do not need to worry about (re)allocating DOS2 memory segments and the whole lot. Though, you may still want to copy the ROMS back to upper memory before exiting the emulator. Just as a courtesy to the user...
