[MSX] Fwd: Ikeda's PRICE LIST

2011-07-10 Thread Alex Wulms
Hi,

Please find forwarded Ikeda's latest MSX price list. You can contact him
at msx-ba...@mail.goo.ne.jp for more info.

On the other hand, if several people in NL/BE want to combine one order
into a bigger one to save on shipping cost, then please contact me
through the contact page on the MSX plaza (http://www.msx-plaza.eu). I
could for example order it from Ikeda and then bring it to the Nijmegen
MSX fair coming January (assuming there will be another one).

Cheers,
Alex

[MSX] New database driven version of MSX Hardware list available

2004-06-19 Thread Alex Wulms
Dear fellow MSX-fans,

As of now, a new database driven version of the MSX hardware list is availabe
on the internet.

You can reach it directly at http://www.hardwarelist.msxnet.org or
alternatively, via the MSX plaza at http://www.inter.nl.net/users/A.P.Wulms

The new version replaces the static html version that was previously available
on the MSX plaza and eventually it will also replace the MSX hardware list
from the Ultimate MSX Faq.

Currently, the MSX HWL database version is available in pilot mode. The
database contents will not yet be actively maintained. The day-to-day
maintenance of the data is still happening via the MSX hardware list from the
Ultimate MSX Faq. Though, the MSX HWL database will be refreshed on a regular
basis with the data from the MSX hardware list on the Ultimate MSX Faq.

Any feedback on the usability of the new MSX HWL is more then welcome. You can
use the feedback form available on the MSX HWL or you can drop a message in
this mailing list.

Kind regards,
Alex Wulms

was made to be plugged into MSX. (^=

It was made to put MSX rompacks in it. That simple fact already makes it
 MSX hardware.
I fully agree with this. It interfaces between MSX rompacks and the MSX
Player.

Furthermore, MSX Player (and also MSX GR itself) are both products from MSX
Association, which currently is the organisation that holds the MSX rights
and as such can define how the MSX standard is further extended. For example
by introducing MSX GR.

Re: [MSX] switching r800 - z80 in TP

2003-12-03 Thread Alex Wulms
Hi Raymond,

The solution to your problem seems to be very simple:
Don't switch back to the Z80. Why would you want to switch back to the Z80
anyway? The R800 is more powerfull.

Kind regards,
Alex Wulms

Op zaterdag 29 november 2003 19:20, schreef [EMAIL PROTECTED]:
What we do is the following.

R800 is running when we start or program
 We load the music file
Do some graphic moves etc in VRAM to prepare the game
Switch to Z80 as we want to start the game
Start music and then the MSX hangs...

When I remove the switch to Z80 it runs fine. When I remove the Start Music
routine it also works fine. Together in one game - MSX Hangs

 Kind regards,

 Raymond

Hm, when exactly do you call these switching routines?
While music is playing? IIRC the music routines make pretty
extensive use of the IX and IY registers, as do your switching
routines... Also, the MB replay routine does check whether you're
running on R800 or Z80, but only when replaying a song is started,
no tduring replay. It uses slightly different routines to OUT data
to the Music Module and FM-PAC: the R800 routine has a few NOPs
thrown in (or an other pausing mechanism), because the R800 would
OUT the data too fast to the music chips. Now if this test happens
to be run while you're in Z80 mode, but later on you try to replay
a song in R800 mode, I can imagine things going kaboom.

 (Just 2 wild guesses)

Does someone have a new routine for TP to play moonblaster

  1.4 music?

 Nope :-(

Raymond,

It might be that the R800 addresses the sound chip too fast.

You might want to do the following in your interrupt routine to work around
it:

switchcpu(z80)
call moonblaster_interrupt_driver
switchcpu(r800)

In this way, you still have optimal performance for everything outside the
music routine itself.

Alex

[MSX] XCC sources now available under open source license, at sourceforge

2003-11-23 Thread Alex Wulms
Dear fellow MSX fans,

I have released the sources of XelaSoft Control Center (XCC) under the GPL
open source license.

The sources are available at sourceforge, which is an organization that hosts
many open source projects. Sourceforge uses CVS (concurrent version control
system) for the version control of the sources.

If you want to make any improvements to XCC, you can let me know. The steps
are simple:
1) Request an account for yourself at www.sourceforge.net
2) Provide me with you account name, so that I can add you as developer to the
project
3) Use 'cvs checkout' to get the files to your PC. Do the modifications. Test
the modifications. Use 'cvs commit' to commit the changes back to the cvs
repository at sourceforge.

More detailed info on the usage of CVS can be found on the pages of
sourceforge.

Re: [MSX] Colour loss

2003-07-25 Thread Alex Wulms
Op vrijdag 25 juli 2003 19:40, schreef JP Grobler:
 Hi

I removed pins 4,21, 27 from the socket
 The colour problem remains

Hi,

I have checked the datasheet of the NMS8250, and it show that the NMS8250
computer has it's own PAL encoding unit. It does not use the composite output
of the VDP. Only following four signals are used:
csync (is the composite sync signal; hsync and vsync are combined)
red
green
blue

The four signals go directly to the scart (although through a small amplifier
circuit) and they go to the pal encoder. The output signal of the pal encoder
goes to the composite video plug and to the RF modulator (for the antenna
signal).

Both v9938 and v9958 have the four above mentioned signals. So you would
expect them to be the same.

However, I have done some search on the internet (via google) and found that
the exact timing of hsync (the horizontal synchronization) slightly differs
between pal and ntsc. I know (from the v9938 databook) that the v9938 comes
in three versions. I have always wondered about the difference. I suspect now
that at least one of those versions uses the pal hsync timing and that at
least one of the others will use the ntsc hsync timing. In which case it is
plausible that the nms8250 (and also other models for the dutch market) will
contain the version with the pal hsync timing. My suspicion is now that the
pal encoder in the nms8250 will get confused by the csync signal of the
v9958, since that one will contain the ntsc hsync timing. This could explain
the color loss on the composite signal.

Is there any ntsc/pal/video specialist who can confirm the above theory?
Because I'm not totally sure.

Kind regards,
Alex Wulms

(B
(BThis is Ikeda$B%((Bs MSX PRINT date on 17th December 2003.
(B
(B-
(B
(BA member of ICMiri group who Gilberto received YAMAHA YM2413(OPLL) Chips
(Bfrom me! Soon, he will create new FM-PAK made in Italy!! Hehehe..
(B
(BI sent many Yamaha YM2413 and V9958 Chips to Italy and Brazil. But my
(Bfriend has still has stocks of:
(B
(B Keyboard for SONY HB-F1XD/XDmk2/XDJ/XV(MSX2/2+)

(B Memory chips to expand internal RAM and VRAM
(B VDP Chips like V9958 etc..
(B FM Music module chips like YM2413 and MSX-AUDIO Chips etc..
(B Clock IC of MSX
(B Panasonic Video telopper FS-UV1
(B
(BNow, it is a good chance to repair your MSX! You must order before it
(Bwill be sold out.
(B
(B-
(B
(BAlways I wrote TRUE Japanese MSX news use via my MSX PRINT like
(BMSXPLAYer, ASCII Corporation and Nishi etc.. But some people was not
(Bbelive my new. Old time ago, people told me..
(B i.e.)
(B
(B ASCII never join with MSX market! IF your news is true, why ASCII
(B doesnot announcement of it on their homepage?
(B Really ASCII will make Emualtor? Already we are waitting long time!
(B etc..
(B
(BBut LOOK! ASCII come back to MSX and MSX Association made MSXPLAYer! My
(Bnews was true!!
(B
(BI wrote about sales ranking of MSX MAGAZINE The permanent issue and
(BHappy!! MSX Emulator and Games at book store. MSX MAGAZINE The permanent
(Bissue is getting top position of sales ranking of book store! And
(BHappy!! MSX Emulator Games is getting 2nd position of sales ranking at
(Bbook store!!! It is true But European people isnot belive my news.
(BIt is a pitty! I think European people is distrustful. This time, I
(Btake photo of sales ranking at book store use via my camera build in
(Bwireless phone. Photo of quality are very bad. Photo size are NOT big.
(BPlease zoom up yourself!
(B
(B FOTO1.JPG : Look! You can look MSX MAGAZINE with "1st" logo. And you can
(B look "2nd" logo with Happy!! MSX Emulator Games!
(B FOTO2.JPG : Book$B%((Bs sales ranking in this store.
(B FOTO3.JPG : Happy!! MSX Emulator Games in store now!
(B FOTO4.JPG : Book store is selling MSX books! This is NOT dream!
(B FOTO5.JPG : Foto inside of book store. MSX MAGAZINE and Happy!! MSX
(B Emulator Games are good sales more than these many books!
(B
(BOnline book stores like Amazon.co.jp doesnot sell many "Happy!! MSX
(BEmulator Games". Because SHUWA SYSTEM co.,ltd hasnot strong power for
(Bonline book stores. And online book store doesnot buy many "Happy!!
(BMSX Emulator Games" from SHUWA SYSTEM co.,ltd. And Online book stores
(Bdoesnot sell many "Happy!! MSX Emulator Games" for people. European
(Bpeople cannot get real sales ranking of book store from sales ranking at
(Bonline book stores!
(B
(BASCII Publishing sold out 25000 MSX MAGAZINE. Congraturation! They are
(Bnot have stock of MSX MAGAZINE to sell. But more people want buy MSX
(BMAGAZINE! ASCII Publishing will print again more 8000 MSX MAGAZINE!!
(BWow!!!
(B
(BSHUWA SYSTEM co.,ldt print 2000 Happy!! MSX Emulator Games. But it was
(Bsold out soon. And SHUWA SYSTEM print again 3000 Happy!! MSX Emulator
(BGames. But it was sold out again! They were surprised this big sales!
(BSHUWA SYSTEM print again 5000 Happy!! MSX Emulator Games. Yes, SYUWA
(BSYSTEM printed total 1 books! It is the most big sales in history of
(BSHUWA SYSTEM. Hahaha!
(B
(BASCII Publishing and SHUWA SYSTEM make a decide of more new book of MSX.
(BYes, we can buy MSX MAGAZINE next issue and Happy!! MSX Emulator Games
(B2! Congraturation!!
(B
(B
(BEuropean people calling "!MSX MAGAZINE 2003". But why European people
(Bcalling "2003"? MSX MAGAZINE 2003 isnot good name. Because you cannot
(Bfind "2003" from cover of MSX MAGAZINE. True Japanese name of MSX
(BMAGAZINE is "MSX MAGAZINE Eikyu hozon ban". I thknk that English name is:
(B
(B Eikyu : Permanent(ly)
(B Hozon : Prservation, Preserve or Keep
(B Ban : Issue or Version
(B
(BNow, I am calling "MSX MAGAZINE The permant preservation issue. But I
(Bknow that my English is NOT good. I hope that someone will fix if it is
(BNOT good name.
(B
(B
(BAbout name of Happy!! MSX Emulator Games. Some people told me that
(BHappy!! MSX Emulator and Games is NOT good name. Because Japanese name

(B
(BMSX Association is slowly starting the new hardware developments. The first
(Bstep is to make an MSX cartridge reader for PC. This USB device will make it
(Bpossible to use real MSX cartridges directly from a PC based MSX emulator.
(BThe MSX association wants to work together with non-Japanese developers, to
(Bachieve a world-standard rom reader. So, if Sunrise or other hardware
(Bdevelopers are willing to participate, you can contact MSX association.
(BThe software interface to control the USB MSX cartridge reader will be made
(Bpublicly available, so that besides MSX player also other MSX emulators can
(Bsupport the device.
(B
(BThe USB MSX cartridge reader is not only interesting for MSX emulators but it
(Bis also the first step towards a new MSX. If a new MSX will be developed,
(Bthen the new MSX will not have MSX cartridge slots. But it will have a USB
(Bport. So then the USB MSX cartridge reader can be used in conjunction with
(Bthe new MSX to play old ROM games.

Would you please remove all private e-mail addresses next time you'll

Re: [MSX] PSG REPLACEMENT WORKS FINE!!!

2002-08-31 Thread Alex Wulms

Hi,

Ah. Heh, it's great to actually have direct communication with one of the
VHDL coders out there, since contact with all others has to go through
other people :). I just re-read the MSX print, and the part about the
  cooperation

I agree, and it seems that this is one of the barriers of the japanese
people for exchanging knowledge and sw/hw developments.
So far, my role in exchanging info about ESE PLD in the public has always been
rather passive. Just forwarding Ikeda's MSX print. But as you may understand
from my other mail, I'm closer involved with the project then just that.
Though, as with any other hobby projects, I do not want to promise too much
directly into the public. To prevent the whole vaporware feeling if things
take more time then originally anticipated. But if people want to join the
ESE PLD project or have more info, they can always contact me or Tjujikawa
directly in stead of via the mailing list. Note that Tjujikawa can write and
read English.

One thing that is not clear for me is if Kunihiko is a member of ESE or
 not.
Yes he is.

And also, if the ESE FPGA project belongs to the MSX Association or
 not.
As far as I know, the ESE FPGA/PLD project is entirely independent of MSX
Association. Though, I can imagine that at some moment in time, MSX
Association may want to take a license on the design...

Though, I can also imagine that MSX Association will totally ignore ESE PLD
project and simply contact Yamaha, Toshiba and other former MSX chip
manufactorers to put all their old chip designs together into a new MSX chip.
Who knows what future will bring us?

with the hardware developed by Tsujikawa, then I also want. For me it's
not clear what is the goal of ESE.
Hobby project. To build a new MSX in hardware without being dependent on big
corporates. After all, eventually all our MSX'es will wear out and fall apart
:-(

Alex Wulms

On 9th August, Spanish MSX supporters who Velonica, Andoni and their

Osaka (^^) I hope that they can enjoy their travel of Japan.

And a Dutch MSX supporter who Rieks visiting to Osaka. Now, he is still
stay in Osaka. I showed to Japanese console magazine "Famitsuu Xbox".
This is weekly magazine for Microsoft Xbox publishing by ASCII
Corporation. Now, driver of MSX Revival Project who Yokoi is writteing
article about MSX on this magazine each every week! Because MSX and Xbox
are same MicroSoft X. And a Japanese newspaper wrote about MSX computer!
Rieks surprise that now Japanese magazine is writteing information about
OLD MSX computer! Hahaha, yes you`re right. MSX is already dead. But MSX
is begin revival from graveyard!

Planet publishing begin distribute "EGG official guide book". This book
is written about classic games like Ys, Xanadu, HYDLIDE and Mephius etc..
Very exsiting book for us! But it is written in Japanese, sorry.

ASCII Corporation will publish MSX Player Magazine. This is incluedeing

A Japanese guy who Boukichi made the BIOS for Emulators. It is call "MSX
GOKAN BIOS". This BIOS is compatible with MSX1. Why he made compatible
BIOS? Bceause Microsoft still has copyright of BIOS. We cannot free use
MSX BIOS Program... Probably he will progress it for MSX2, MSX2+ and
MSXturboR..

 http://www.emucamp.com/boukichi/soft.html

21th August, Boukichi is version up of this BIOS. And he change name to
C-BIOS 0.04 from MSX GOKAN BIOS. Because MSX Associations has MSX Logo
NOW. IF Boukichi is use name of "MSX", he must get permission from MSX
Associations. He doesnot like it.

C-BIOS is mean of Compatible BIOS. But C-BIOS is temporary name. Now, he
wants make good name for this BIOS. IF you have something suggestion, let
write mail to him:

 [EMAIL PROTECTED]

IF he will not be able to make good name for it, he will make strange
name like "MIYABI" (^^;

C-BIOS is BIOS for Emulator. But this is useful, I think.

A Greate Japanese program code writter of FAT16 Patch program who Okei

Ikeda's MSX PRINT date on 31th July 2002

Some peoples asked me same thing. I must write same thing to them...
Humm... Okey, this time, I reply it on my MSX PRINT.

Jean asked me:
I have some questions

How is MSX doing in Japan?

Is there still a strong support for the system?

I heard there is coming a msx 3 is this correct?

Here in Japan, MSX Associations is doing MSX Revival Project. Now,
they're selling MSX Player to Project EGG and SYNTAX. Probably MSX Player
is no.1 Emulator of MSX on Windows. And it's commercial software, NOT
free price. MSX associations is getting money from EGG and SYNTAX per 1
copy of MSX Player.

Project EGG is selling old MSX games. It's build in MSX Player Engine.
These old games are only program(Emulator engine with Disk/ROM Image).

Now, you can dawnload Ys II(PC-88 Ver) promo from EGG homepage. Yes, you
can play old YS II on your PC.
 1)Visit to:
   http://www.soft-city.com/egg/d020225_1.htm
 2)Click the DAWNLOAD

ASCII Corporation will publish MSX Player magazine at next MSX DENYULAND.
Probably, MSX DENYULAND Organize committee will organize MSX DENYULAND in
October or November. Now, I'm writtening article for it.

You can get MSX Player from supplement CD of MSX Player magazine #1.

I know that European/Brazilian MSX supporters don't like commercial
emulator. But MSX Associations needs money to create new MSX. Who pay
money to meke new MSX?

I think that now our way is one of them.
1)MSX standard will revival. But people must pay money to MSX Logo,
MSX-DOS2, ROM Image(like BIOS) and Emulator etc... And we can't get
illegal ROM Image from Illegal ROM Image(I like Illegal ROM Image).
Because SoftHouse still has copyright of them. When MSX will revival,
SoftHouse will attack to Illegal ROM site.
2)MSX is dead complete. But we can use BIOS, Game and Emulator in free
price. We need not pay money. It's look like paradise! But future is
   NOTHING.
Which way do you like? Sander Zuidema told me that this is final chanse
to revival. Yes, he is right, I think.

A few days ago, ESE Artist's Factory of Tsujikawa sent me a E-mail.
Because his ESE MSX System was finish.

 http://www.hat.hi-ho.ne.jp/tujikawa/esepld/esemsx.html

IF someone of MSX Brazilian Crew will make logic board of ESE MSX System,
Tsujikawa will very happy. And also design of Z80.

Here in Japan, Tsujikawa must pay many money to design of logic board.
Probably Tsujikawa must pay 50Yen... The most big problem is that
Tsujikawa doesn't have CAD Software to design of board...
IF Brazilian MSX Crew has CAD Software, Tsujikawa wants help from
Brazilian MSX Crew.

Tsujikawa hopes that Brazilian MSX Crew will make Prototype use with
Spartan2E.

We think that Brazilian MSX Crew is useing very old PLD chip and small
capacity chip. It's NOT good enough to make MSX. Probably Brazilian MSX
Crew can't get good chip... Do you want chip from Japan?

Tsujikawa has spare of ALTERA 10K30A, 10K100A and EPC2. He needs not it.
These chips are already old. But high grade of chip that now Brazilian
MSX crew is useing.

Marco Dal Poz is makeing BrMSX on a chip use with FPGA Xilinx
XCS40XL-PQ240. This is very very small capacity...

At first, Tsujikawa wants make MSX use with PLD. After, he will try cost
dawn. PLD devise is progressing in day and day. Soon, we can use more
cheap and good PLD devise.

What do you think, Dal Poz?

2002-06-23 Thread Alex Wulms

Dear MSX fans,

Please note that I have uploaded the new MSX print from Ikeda to the MSX
Plaza. See signature for url to the MSX plaza.

Here is a short summary of the new MSX print:

A lot of news surrounding MSX Player and MSX Association; distribution of
SYNTAX games in Europe and distribution of Sunrise games in Japan.
Explanation about commercial version and free version of MSX Player.
Photo of FPGA MSX proto type. Editorial note: the Single chip
MSX, prototyped in FPGA, is the next step in the MSX Association MSX
revival plans. The MSX Association Single chip MSX project is independent
of the ESE-PLD MSX project, which is a hobby project to build an MSX
in FPGA technology.

Re: v9948 manual...

2002-05-28 Thread Alex Wulms

] The v9948 was a VDP specially made for Korean MSX-computers.

] as far as I know was a text-modus specially made to display the korean
] character set.
]
] Since I heard there was a manual of it available somewhere, I thought,
] it wouldn't hurt if this were to be put online.
]
]
] That's interesting I have never seen v9948 ... -_-
]
] Greetings from Korea,
]
] There's a short statement about it at the bottom of this page:
]
]
] I guess it only was in one of the last Korean MSX models...?
] In any case, it should be easy to test... just type SCREEN 9 in the basic of
] every Korean MSX you encounter and see if it does something (aside from
] giving a syntax error) ^_^

Note that the note does not say explicitly that screen 9 was/is exclusive to
v9948. Though, the way it is written in that note indeed seems to imply that
exclusive relation. But the last real paragraph of the original article also
clearly states that screen 9 is most likely one of the normal graphical MSX 2
screens, addressed as if it is a text screen, just like the kanji screens on
MSX 2+ and MSX turbo R models.

Nevertheless, I would love to get my hands on an electronic or paper copy of
the v9948 databook.

Kind regards,
Alex Wulms

Don't agree with this viewpoint. Nishi even visited MSX fair in Tilburg a
year ago. But please be aware that setting up sales with correct legal
framework, etc. is always very complicated. Especially when going
international. So I can understand very well that MSX Association first
starts in Japan, since they know that market the best.

Though, I would not mind if e.g. Sunrise or some other European organisation
would contact MSX Association to also set up a distribution system in Europe.
And perhaps an Brazilian MSX club/group/foundation could take care of Brazil

Just my 2 cents.

] if you install it it tries to integrate with your system in every possible
Funny that you mention this. Because the integration within the system is
exactly what Microsoft also does with its applications like IE and media
player. And they drive this integration much and much further. After all,
they do have the source of the windows kernel to their availability. And
currently they are witholding essential XP low-level programming information
from real-software so that they can not make their streaming software
integrate with XP.

Note that I would have less objections against IE and mediaplayer domination
if those applications would also be available for operating systems that
really compete with microsoft. Like Linux. Or Palm OS. Or Psion/symbian. But
they are not. And they will never be. While realplayer, netscape, opera and
many other non-microsoft internet client tools are available for
non-microsoft platforms.

In this way, microsoft can leverage its desktop dominance to eventually gain
a dominance into other markets via the internet. These days already many
websites use so many microsoft specific extensions that they are hardly
usable with non-microsoft browsers. And thus also with non-microsoft PDAs etc.

Do you now understand my point?

] Is MSX a trade mark? Then why isn't there a tm or (R) on my 8250 boot
All printed documents (user manuals, MSX ROM bios handbook, MSX Technical
book, etc) from before '88 or so mentioned 'MSX is a trademark of Microsoft
corporation'. Books published as of approximately '88 mentioned 'MSX is a
trademark of Microsoft and ASCII corporation'. And later, somewhere around
'90, it became 'MSX is a trademark of ASCII corporation'. At least, for the
books that I have seen here in Europe. It might be that in Japan, it has been
ASCII corporation as of the beginning. After all, some very old documents
mentions ASCII/Microsoft far east. There was a very close partnership
between ASCII and Microsoft in the early days of MSX.

] screen? Did Philips, Sony etc pay royalties to anyone? Doesn't a trade mark
Given the stuff above, I assume yes. I think that for MSX1 and MSX2, they had
to pay to Microsoft, for 2+ it was divided between Microsoft and ASCII and
for MSX turbo R it was to ASCII only. And on top of that they obviously also
had to pay license rights for the MSX Bios, the MSX Disk rom, the JIS/JE
stuff and all the other ROMs that are in MSX computers as part of the MSX
standard. Or that the manufacturers payed everything to ASCII and that ASCII
redistributed the royalties to the respective parties. That is what publisher
companies (like ASCII) do. It's one of their main competencies.

That I do not know. But given the fact that the MS X-box is called MS X-box
is instead of MSX-box does say something...

] I know and I am very much concerned about these kinds of laws.
So am I. I'm slowly to starting to realize the potential impact of this kind
of legislation. It could eventually even kill open-source. Just look at how
difficult it is to legally play DVDs under Linux. No vendor wants to make
official drivers for Linux. The only way is via 'illegally'
reverse-engineered code...

Just imagine if in a couple of years from now, you can only download music
and video's in windows media format. Then you will not be able to play
those under linux. It is even more worrying if microsoft will succeed in
killing real-player for streaming audio and video. They are doing a big
attempt now by integrating their own streaming audio and video solution
into Windows XP and making usage of real-player very hard under XP.
If they continue like this, they will succeed killing real-player.
Just like they effectively killed netscape...

So from this respect, even living outside the USA does not help too much.

Though, I will stop this thread now. It is becoming too much off-topic.

Alex Wulms

That is exactly his point. Yokoi would prefer to make it open source but some
program code writers (like Marat) do not like that. Which indeed means that
it can not be put under open source.

But that is not a problem anymore. Last couple of month, several people have
been working on a brand new MSX emulator, called OpenMSX. This MSX emulator
is opensource. It has been rebuild from scratch, based on some new concepts
regarding communication and synchronisation between the various processors in
the MSX. This new communication and synchronisation model will eventually
lead to a (near) perfect MSX emulation.

Current plans are that the first developers version will be released around
Tilburg MSX fair.

We hope that eventually many emulator and other developers will join the
project to make this the best MSX emulator that has ever existed or will ever
exist on the planet.

]
] What is copyright of MSX? MSX emulators are written using publicly

] necessary to create an MSX emulator.
The copyright is on the base design. Normally, you need to take a license to
build an MSX and use the MSX trade mark. Note that building your own products
based on reverse engineering is these days forbidden in the USA, thanks to
the 'digital millenium rights act', which is some new legislation around
copyright, etc that was created somewhere around 1999/2000. The big lobbyist
behind this legislation are monopolistic companies and industry groups like
Microsoft, Hollywood. They want to protect their monopolistic intrests and
are very afraid for what you can achieve via reverse engineering. After all,
that is how Microsoft became the big bully that they are now...

The US takes this legislation very serious. E.g., they arrested a russion
programmer on a US developers conference, because this russion programmer
worked for a company that had bypassed some PDF related security via reverse
engineering.

Fortunately for us, the US laws are not applicable outside the US. Though,
there are currently big lobby actions ongoing to get the same kind of
legislations approved in for example Europe. Don't know the situation in
Japan. The main drivers behind the lobbying are the same parties. E.g., they
want to try to get the microsoft digital management rights (MDMR) mandated by
law. In the extreme, they want to achieve that all electronic devices sold in
future must contain MDMR system and are not allowed to play/display contents
that is not MDMR protected...

Ikeda's MSX PRINT date on 19th March

Some days ago, I received telephone from Hidekatsu YOKOI who driver of
MSX Revival Project. Because he received Email from Sander Zuidema and he
read news about MSX Player at MSX Resouce Center. He hopes that I will
write more information about MSX Player use via my MSX PRINT. We talked
about 2 hours about MSX Player. This time, I write it to you. I hope
that you are enjoy this.

I did not interest in MSX Player. Because we can use other Emulators like
fMSX, JAVA MSX Emulator, Zodiac, RuMSX and freeM etc.. But Hidekatsu
Yokoi told me that MSX Player can emulate many MSX softwares more than
the other Emulators. Probably it is No.1 emulate function. And MSX Player
is fine work with The souce of Power produced by ANMA. It is cool thing!
But MSX Player needs high clock speed CPU, MSX Player cannot fine work
with slowly clock speed CPU..

 8th April
SYNTAX will distribute MSX Player with NV Magazine 4/2002 to subscriber
of NV Magazine. Subscriber can get MSX Player(Windows ver) faster more
  than the other way!

 15th April
MSX Associaltion begin distribute MSX Player(Windows ver).

 15th April
Fujitsu will begin sell a handy computer. And this computer has some
supplement software includeing MSX Player(Windows CE ver).

 20th April
EGG will begin sell HYDLIDE for PC. This HYDLIDE is includeing MSX
Player to RUN HYDLIDE(MSX ver) on Windows.

 ?
Now, Yokoi wants publish guide book of MSX Player. This book is
includeing MSX Player with some programming tool for program code
writters. And people can study how to write of MSX program code from
  this book.

*MY PERSONAL SUGGESTION:
IF someone will begin distribute MSX Player at Tilburg fair, it is nice.

Price of MSX Player. Windows version is free price. And Yokoi wants OPEN
SOUCE CODE LICENSE like GNU. But some program code writters donot like
it. They wants protect their program technology from other people.
Now, Yokoi donot know that Windows CE ver is free or NOT free.
On August, probably Macintiosh ver available. Almost people donot
interest in Mac ver. But Kazuhiko NISHI likes Machintosh more than
Windows.(Kazuhiko Nishi is Mac user). Nishi ordered Mac ver for code
writters of MSX Player.

Some days ago, Bill Gates of Microsoft visited to Japan to sell X-box at
Japan. At this time, Bill, Nishi and Yokoi talkked about Copyright of MSX
Computer. Still Microsoft has copyright of some programs like MSX BIOS.
And Microsoft doesnot recognize use of MSX BIOS. But Nishi and Yokoi will
fix this problem.

I know that Marat who author or fMSX is worry about payment of royalty to
use code of fMSX in MSX Player. You can read:

 http://www.fms.komkon.org/fMSX/

But Yokoi will fix this problem use via their barrister. Long time, Yokoi
doesnot contact with Marat. Because Marat told that I can wait. At first,
Yokoi negotiations with MicroSoft more than Marat. Message to Marat:

You need not worry. Yokoi will pay royalty till distribute the MSX
 Player.

And Nishi paied many money to buy copyright of MSX from ASCII
Corporation. Now, MSX Associations has Copyright of MSX, NOT ASCII Corp!

Okazaki made very cool emulator of FM Music. And Yokoi discuss about it
with Yamaha Corporation. Yamaha will NOT appeal to the law! Because this
emulator is NOT use technology of Yamaha at all!

Yokoi asked me about date of Brazilian MSX meeting. Because Yokoi wants
visit to Brazil. But I donot know date of meeting. Brazilian MSXer donot
announcement of their meeting written in English... And I am very

Thanks for this link. This is indeed what I was looking for. Meanwhile, I had
already found the US unison-capital via google but was wondering if that was
the correct one.

If I interprete the company profile and strategy of Unison Capital correctly,
then taking over ASCII is not such a strange move. It fits within their
strategy of trying to build-up a fund that is profitable on the long term,
provided that good restructurings are done at the companies that they invest
in.

After all, ASCII *is* a big publisher in Japan and does have the potential to
become profitable again if run correctly and all pet-projects and other
overhead activities are terminated.

But then again, questions can always be raised about the real motivation of
choosing ASCII and not another company to add to their portfolio. After all,
business is all about people knowing people and interacting with each other...

This is big news. If I understand your message well, you are not only telling

Who is this investment group Unison Capital? What are their plans with

Do you have any ideas?

Yes, it is.

Specify for example A: as input drive and B:bladiebla as output file

Then the MSX turbo R will start reading from drive A. And after a while it
will say:
please insert disk for drive B:

Then, you can insert your output disk. The turbo R will start writing to it.
And after a while, it will say:
please insert disk for drive A:

Then you insert your input disk again.

And so on.

This 'Please insert disk for drive A' or 'Please insert disk for drive B' is
a standard feature for the disk-rom and works for every program on machines
with only one physical diskdrive.

Hi,

Unfortunately this is not entirely true. There are known bugs in most unix
flavors (including linux) on the market that can provide root-access to an
attacking program. And although there are also known patches for most of
these bugs, not everybody is aware and has upgraded his/her system to the
latest security patch.

Nevertheless, the fact remains that unix is indeed more secure by design than
windows 3.x and 9.x flavors. And furthermore, although win-nt flavors can be
configured as secure as unix-flavors, the out-of-the-box installation is as
insecure as it can be. This is an intentional choice of Microsoft. They
prefer to have a system on which an ignorant user can do anything he/she
wants without any problems. But if the system would be secure, that would
become impossible. In that case, the user should be computer literate enough
to still handle the system. Thus, Microsoft has choosen to offer security for
user friendliness. Though, a system that is so insecure that it enables any
attack to the system is in my humble opinion not so friendly to the user.
Before he/she knows, he can not use his/her system anymore at all.

Just my 2 cents.

According to the MSX2 standard, you can have two (optional) MSX Audio's. One
on C0/C1. The other on C2/C3. SME3 makes use of this optional feature.

In one of the other mails, you can find a reference to a (dutch) text
describing how to modify a Philips MSX Music module to listen to port C2/C3
in stead of C0/C1. The modification exists of installing a switch to switch
between the two address ranges. Though, it also switches the I/O address of
the MIDI ports in the music module.

Hi Richard,

] Presumably when the RAM at #C000 - # is enabled, writing to this

Writes to a secundairy slot register are not propagated to the subslots
controlled by that secundairy slot register. The address decoder does not do
a 'write select' or whatsoever on the subslots when accessing the 0x
address. This is also useless, since reading 0x will return the reverse
value of the secundairy slot anyway.

See also my other message for more details.

No.

The secundairy slot register is contained within the primary slot!

With other words:
If primary slot 2 is expanded with a secundairy slot register (at 0x),
you need to select primary slot 2 into page 3 to modify that secundairy slot
register.

Likewise, if primary slot 3 is expanded with a secundairy slot register
(again at 0x), you need to select primary slot 3 into page 3 to modify
that secundairy slot register.

Furthermore, modifications to secundairy slot register in primary slot 2 are
invisible to modifications to secundairy slot register in primary slot 3. Etc.

] Reading # will return the *inverse* of what you've written into
] it (don't ask ;-)).
This is indeed correct.
Reason: you can detect the presence of a secundairy slot register by writing
to address 0x, reading back the value and checking if it has become
inversed. If yes, then a secundairy slot is present.

This is used by the memory search routine of MSX in the ROM-Bios, which is
executed as part of the reset routine. The result of this search is placed in
system area, where it remains available for all other programs.

Alex Wulms

No, not really. Though, the rule is not entirely complete.

If memory serves me correct, it is more like:
1) Without MSXDOS2: in each page, the first RAM slot is selected
-- this indeed gives problems loading (cracked) megaroms into a machine with
non-mapped memory in a lower slot...

2) On non-turbo R with MSXDOS2:
-- The largest memory mapper is selected

3) On MSX turbo R (regardless of MSXDOS2):
-- The internal memory mapper is selected.

But please do not quote me on this. It might still be uncomplete and
inaccurate.

Anybody willing to do experiments to be able to get the complete list of
memory-search strategies used in various combinations of MSX1, MSX2(+),
MSXDOS2, MSX turbo R. With and without multiple memory banks. Some mapped,
others non-mapped...

Kazuhiko Nishi and visiter tolked about MSX Computer system. Visiter
were about 50 peoples. MSX was made by Microsoft and ASCII on 1983.
At first, Nishi began talk about old story about MSX like Screen-mode
and Video chip V9958 created by ASCII.
Many makers made MSX. And they were 2 groups. One is GAME MACHINE
group. They wanted make Game-machine. This group wanted add CD-ROM
 drive and Original game controler.
The other group is COMPUTER group. They wanted make Computer, NOT
 game-machine.
These groups discussed about MSX3. And Nishi made MSX2+ and MSXturboR.
When this time, Nishi got a idea to use movie use via CD-ROM. After,
Nishi used this idea for Fujitsu FM-TOWNS. MPEG-1 and MP3 technology is
 based upon idea by Nishi.
Nishi visited to last Tilburg fair to look European MSX freaks. Nishi

And Nishi wants make MSX Emulator to multi OS like Windows, Mac OS and

Hi Adriano,

You are right. Though, in stead of using special commands to look at the
directories and copy files from them, you can also build FAT support into the
uzix kernel. Such that you can do for example:
mount /dev/scsia0 /msx_data

Or whatever you want to call your filesystem. Obviously you would put the
line in /etc/fstab so that the mount is done automatically at boot time. In
such way you do not have to remember the SCSI IDs or partition numbers
afterwards anymore. Only when you put them in /etc/fstab.

But I suppose I'm not telling anything new here ;-)

Ikeda's MSX PRINT date on 17th July

End of this month, Kazuhiko NISHI(special adviser of ASCII Corporation),
Hidekatsu YOKOI(driver of MSX Revival Project), Javi(Spanish guy,
interpriter) and Keita GOTO(member of ASCII) will visit to MicroSoft in
America(U.S.A.) to discuss with Bill Gates about MSX and MSX emulator.
MicroSoft still has copyright(25 percent) of MSX. IF ASCII Corp will get
money from the other company, ASCII must pay money(25 percent of profit)
to MicroSoft. This contract still alive, NOT dead.

And ALREADY SoftBank PAIED money 12000Yen to ASCII. Because RuMSX
is... Sorry, I cannot write you more thing at official stage. IF you are
interst in it, you can ask it to the persons concerned of RuMSX like
Takamichi in *PERSONAL*, NOT official. Probably Takamichi know this
accident.

Hidekatsu Yokoi wants begin distribute of MSX Player for Windows. But
MicroSoft think that 1 computer is 1 OS. IF MSX Player will fine work
on Windows, computer will work 2 OS(Windows and MSX-DOS). And Bill
thinking ALL Emulator is ILLEGAL. Because MicroSoft is NOT recognize 2
OS on 1 computer..
Yokoi will discuss about this problem with MicroSoft and Gill at America.
I hope success of Yokoi! Probably Kazuhiko Nishi will help Yokoi.

Nishi did big success and big fail. You can visit to Japanese homepage
of mass-media.

The interview for Nishi:Success and fail

This is consortium of Intent. Yokoi will make new company of MSX under
the consortium. Nishi resign vice-president of ASCII to bigin president
of this consortium. But Inamori(president of Kyocera) hate Nihsi. Now,
Nishi and Inamori are fighting about position(post) of president.

Information about 1-chip-MSX
-
IF we hope that MSX will really revival, we need REASON of rivival. Why
we need MSX?

Situation of now:Now PC is NOT expensive to Japanese. But NOT chap. PC is
still expensive to NOT Japanese people!?
 - 1-chip-MSX will very very chaep price
 - 1-chip-MSX will possible connect with Internet.
 - 1-chip-MSX will possible RUN MSX contents
 - 1-chip-MSX will possible work with Linux
Concept is very very cheap PC and market is world wide(market is NOT only
Japan and Europa).

PC is world wide computer. But underdeveloped nations are not target of
PC maker. How many money can they pay for computer? Can we sell computer?
Especially student??
They cannot buy very very cheap computer?

When IF the village chief hope that children is go to elementary school,
Internat is useful.

For exsample, IF we will distribute computer free price use via
government...
IF it is possible, price is...

How many efficiency we need? We need efficiency like mobile-phone?
We want efficiency more than mobile-phone.
MSX need efficiency to access database of university in the world.

Yes.

Example:
init_error_handler:
  ld hl, errptr
  ld (#f323), hl
  ret

errptr:
  dw error_handler

error_handler:

I'm impressed!

Jippie :-))

] Be sure that your browser is compatible with Javascript, frames (are there
] people which have browsers that are not?),
Lynx...

] and PHP (will come).
Huh? PHP is server side processing. As far as I know, it has nothing to do
with the browser. Or have I missed yet another interesting development in the
ever changing internet world?

Kind regards,

Re: DOS2 freeing R800 DRAM memory

2001-06-19 Thread Alex Wulms

] Please note that you can also advise your ST users to boot the ST in DOS1
] mode. That will also free the 32kB of RAM used by DOS2 itself.
]
] True, but I'd have to rewrite all the file functions for DOS1 and wouldn't
] be able to support subdirectories anymore :(
] I hate DOS1 file functions...
I have a small library with the most important file-functions that runs on
top of DOS1 and DOS2. If DOS2 is present, it will use the underlying DOS2
functions and if DOS2 is not present it will use the old fashioned DOS1
functions.

The functions in the library are in DOS2 style.

Though, you can only keep 1 file open at the same time. So, it is something
like 'open file, read from file, close file'.

If you want, I can send this library to your private email adress.

Re: DOS2 freeing R800 DRAM memory

]
] So is this util called 'romturbo.com' and 'ramturbo.com'? Else I'm afraid I
] don't know which util was discussed. :/
It is indeed romturbo.com and ramturbo.com.

The utility romturbo.com switches to R800 ROM mode and makes the 64kB RAM
available to the normal pool of free RAM.

The utility ramturbo.com copies the ROM blocks back to the upper 64kB of RAM,
removes the 64kB from the normal pool of free RAM switches back to R800 RAM
mode.

]
] ] So how does the ROM get there in the first place?! There must be some
] ] routine in the BIOS that gets it there???
] That is correct.
]
] Do you know which routine that is?
No.

But I can mail you ramturbo.com and romturbo.com if you want to investigate
them. It is ofcourse nice to have this functionality integrated in your
emulator.

Please note that you can also advise your ST users to boot the ST in DOS1
mode. That will also free the 32kB of RAM used by DOS2 itself. In that case,
you only have to make a very simple modification to your emulator:
If MSX turbo R booted in DOS2 mode: keep your memory management as it is.
If booted in DOS1 mode: switch to R800 ROM mode and search all available
memory yourself. In that case, you do not need to worry about (re)allocating
DOS2 memory segments and the whole lot. Though, you may still want to copy
the ROMS back to upper memory before exiting the emulator. Just as a courtesy
to the user...
