Re: Podcast receiving software.

2006-05-22 Thread Chris Skarstad
Hi Jim
Why would you want scheduling for individual podcasts?
With Juice, you do have the ability to check each individual feed for
new shows. I've been listening to Podcasts for almost a year now,
and I haven't found a single podcast that comes out at exactly the
same time every week, or every day on a consistant basis. It's just
the way podcasts seem to be. You may get the shows on the same day
and within the same hour or so, but not at the same time every single
time. So for individual shows, you should check each individual feed
using juice, or go to the podcast's website and download the latest
shows instead.

I am looking for a podcast receiver in which scheduling for individual
podcasts is possible. Juice does have scheduling capabilities; however, as
far as I know, the scheduling applies to all podcasts.

Any help would be appreciated all over the place gang.

Re: Working with audio Players

2006-05-16 Thread Chris Skarstad
hi Sharon

The reason you can't play the audio file offline is because the .asx
file is a reference to the file you're trying to play. In other
words, the .asx file tells Windows media player ok, windows media
player! I want you to go online to this site, and play this file.
Nothing else, just this file. So windows media player says, ok, I'll
play that file for you. So the file it's referencing is on asite
somewhere, and in order to get the file, you'd actually need to
download it to your machine. Sometimes this is possible, sometimes
not. if it's a streaming file, then it isn't possible since the file
continuously plays. However, if it's just a regular file, ou might be
able to open up the .asx file in note pad or some other kind of text
editor and download the file to your system. Keep in mind that the
file may be quite large, so be warned.
Of course, you could always get yourself a faster internet connection
like dsl or cable, but I know that that's not always economically
possible. If it is for you however, you would be able to play these
files without so much difficulty.
  Hope this helps.

a Windows Media Player file. Today I set up Windows Media Player 10, then
went to the folder where I stored the file and opened it. Instead of
playing directly, I was taken online and then it started playing. Since I
have dial-up connection, it would play, then break, then play again. I know
that dial-up connection is not a good option for listening to things online.
Eventually I got a message saying that Windows Media Player could not play
the file. I can understand that, if the file is no longer stored in the
place where I got it. It's the 911 call that someone made while on a heroic
rescue of a man and his daughter, from Readers Digest and HappyNews.com, so
I can see that this would be temporary. But why can't I play the file
off-line that I downloaded?

Re: setting times for replay-av

2006-04-24 Thread Chris Skarstad
hi Kurt

This only happened to me once. I had set up a show to record and
then went to the show's site to check to make sure the time was
correct, and it wasn't. So I just went into the show's properties
and changed the times with the arrow keys. I didn't know how to do
that at first, but a quick note from Jonathan helped with that,
thanks Jonathan!
Either way, it's very easy to change the time of a show recording if
the replay guide is wrong.
and when I check that a show time is right, it is, more often than not.

go back and fix it. Has anybody else had that problem? Thanks. Kurt

Re: replay-AV weirdness

2006-04-22 Thread Chris Skarstad
hi. This is always possible due to the kind of stream you have, plus
i learned that some streams *must* be recorded using your sound card.
I didn't think so but it's true.
Either way, what I would do, in order to make life a whole lot
simpler is to just find one stream and stick with it. Keeps you from
having multiple recordings of the same show, plus it takes up much
less hard drive space.
Also it's always entirely possible that the stream could experience a
problem while you're recording. These things aren't like
over-the-air radio signals. They're sent to you through the net, and
if you get one little packet of information out of place, it could
spell trouble.
and I won't even go into how frustrating it is to lose your internet
connection while recording a stream, grr. So with so many factors in
place, it's amazing that we can do all this stuff.

Yep, 5.13, until Nullsoft can fix the library, or until someone, with

However when you install it, as I've said many times already on this
subject but I'll say it again, when installing Winamp, make sure that
the modern skin support is not! checked. By default, everything is
turned on. So when installing it, arrow down the list of options and
uncheck modern skin support. You'll know it's unchecked for sure
when you get to the skin selection part of the instalation. Make
sure that the radio button for classic skin for slower machines and
greater accessibility is checked. If it isn't, you know modern skin
support is still checked, so you'll need to go back and uncheck it.
Otherwise, you'll have nothing but trouble with it. If you have a
version of JAWS after 4.51, press insert plus h for specific hotkeys
for the window you're in, or insert plus w gives you hotkeys for all

Re: Winamp

2006-04-17 Thread Chris Skarstad
oh! so you guys are talking about the notification of new versions of
Winamp being available. Yes, this can be turned off in preferences.
It's not an add or even a popup, it's just a little dialogue box.
But yes it can be turned off in the general preferences.
I'm sure you can find it.

hi. I got so disgusted with version 5.2 of Winamp that I just went
right back to version 5.13. To answer your question about the
library, it kind of is, and kind of isn't. In version 5.2, you have
to do all kinds of tricks to get it to work properly. In version 5.13
of Winamp, you don't, it just works as it should, every time. Now I
ask you which version would you install?
Yep, 5.13, until Nullsoft can fix the library, or until someone, with
some JAWS scripting abilitiesand/or Window-eyes set file
manipulation, can make the library, the 5.2 version of the library
this is, more accessible.

hi. Well, there's that word, accessible again. I would say the
only real issue is with the media library. So if you don't plan on
making use of it a lot, you should be fine. A more screenreader
friendly version can be gotten from
 http://www.toonhead-online.com/winamp513_full.exe

However when you install it, as I've said many times already on this
subject but I'll say it again, when installing Winamp,
 make sure that
the modern skin support is not! checked. By default, everything is
turned on. So when installing it, arrow down the list of
 options and
uncheck modern skin support.
If you have a
version of JAWS after 4.51, press insert plus h for specific hotkeys
for the window you're in, or insert plus w gives you hotkeys for all
 Winamp windows.

 Hope this helps.

Re: Webpage so that files can be downloaded to an Ipod

2006-04-09 Thread Chris Skarstad
Hi Dennis
You don't have to do anything on your end at all, other than set up
your webpage. The idea here is that the user of the iPod or other
mp3 player must transfer the files themselves, you don't help them
transfer it. All you do is provide the files and the rest is up to
them. I will tell you though, that because of the limitations of
some mp3 players, it's probably a good idea to provide the files at
reasonably high quality. Some mp3 players choke on lower quality
stuff, or in the case of mine, they just skip right over it. So make
sure that your files are encoded at an absolute minimum of 64k bps,
44.1 KHZ. If it's got music or other sound effects, go for stereo.
If it's just speech, you can go ahead and do mono.
I wouldn't go any higher than 128k though unless the recording
requires it. So again, the owner of the iPod must transfer the files
on their own. All you do is upload the files, maybe set up a podcast
feed so that when new ones come out, they'll be sent out to people
automatically, and that's pretty much it.

If you want to know more about podcasting, go to
http://www.podcast411.com

How do I have to set up the webpage to make downloading to an

Re: Ipod shuffle

2006-04-07 Thread Chris Skarstad
Lary, check out

http://www.redchairsoftware.com

You can buy a wonderful program called Anapod Explorer. It provides a
windows explorer type of interface to transfer your tunes to your
iPod, which is *much* more accessible and easy than iTunes! To me it
is the only way to go. Unfortunately, iTunes must be present on your
system for everything to worrk, so make sure that you do not uninstall iTunes!
You can buy 2 versions of the Anapod software. One for all iPods
which costs $30, and one for $20 which is just for the shuffle.

Trust me! This is way way way better than iTunes!

At 10:11 AM 4/7/2006, you wrote:
Doc, I understand your frustration. These things are great once you get them

As I recall, once you get to the point where you're moving music from the
iTunes library to the iPod shuffle, you can choose the tracks yourself. But
first you have to get the library and the shuffle to communicate. And I know
of no way to use something other than iTunes for the transfer of your music.
If someone out there can prove me wrong on that score, I'd be grateful.

Sorry, not exactly a positive post. Quite honestly, I use the iPod shuffle
because I got it for free. Still, it does sound great, and the buttons on
the device itself are quite easy to identify and use.

It's quite simple. Look for a bit of text that says, If you don't

Press enter on that button. On the next page you can enter all the

Card type, credit card number, expeiration, etc.
It really is there, and it really does work, I just went there myself

hi. Did you see a dialogue that said
Open file security warning dialogue. While files from the internet
can be useful, this file type can potentially harm your computer.
If you did, that is acommon thing with windows xp service pack 2.
So even if you downloaded Winamp from the Whitestick.co.uk website
and after downloading it, pressed enter on it, and as i said before,
you are running XP service pack 2, you are going to get that
dialogue. If you are unsure, you can always scan the file in your

Re: pay pal

2006-03-16 Thread Chris Skarstad
Hi. Yes, you do need an account to use paypal. when you want to buy
something, you click a pay pal button on a site you're on which takes
you to a page where you can log in. then you are shown the product
you're buying and it's as simple as clicking one little pay button.
If you're purchasing Jonathan's Google tutorial, do not! close your
browser after you've made your purchase or you will lose the download
link for it. it appears on the page after you pay for it. Signing up
with paypal is also straight forward, and the audio file is actually
not bad either, a least from memory.

Re: A Message from the List Sponsor, MosenExplosion.com

2006-03-15 Thread Chris Skarstad
Hi. I already bought a copy of the tutorial, and will definitely not
share it. It's good stuff, so if you like Jonathan's style of
reviews, please support him like I did.

Please feel free to delete.

Since I stopped doing main Menu, a lot of people have urged me to produce
downloadable tutorials. So in my weekends and evenings, I've been putting my
first together.

One of the first issues I had to confront was how to secure the content. I
investigated a number of options, and eventually came to the conclusion that
all of them will disadvantage the people I want to help most, those who
struggle with computers. So I've come up with a concept I am calling
trustware. It's simple, the only thing stopping you from sharing the
tutorial with your friends, is trust. It takes a lot of research, time and
energy to put these tutorials together. I've tried to keep the price low in
order to keep the price within everyone's reach. So if you like the
tutorial, and you'd like to see more produced, please support this effort by
not passing it on, and by encouraging others to buy. If I'm being naive and
I only sell one or two copies, then obviously this will be the only one I
produce. So now the details of this first tutorial.

Jonathan Mosen's Get going with Google is a comprehensive two hour audio
tutorial unlocking the secrets of the world's most powerful search engine.

Have you ever wondered how to search for something on Google while excluding
certain common results? Did you know Google can be used as a dictionary, a
calculator and a means of converting everything from currency to weight? Did
you know Google can show you who is linking to your blog or other web site?
Did you know Google has a thesaurus to help you get the most out of
searching? Jonathan Mosen's Get Going with Google unlocks the full potential
of Google, with the access technology user in mind.

Whether you use a screen reader, a portable device or a stand-alone
accessible browsing solution, Jonathan Mosen's Get Going with Google puts
you in control of the billions of pages on the world wide web. References
are made to JAWS and Window-eyes commands throughout the tutorial, but
instructions are also given so that it's easy to translate them into
whatever product you use.

Talking you step by step through every keystroke, you'll find just how easy
it is to become a Google master. Get exactly the search results you want
with Jonathan Mosen's Get Going with Google.

Spending two hours mastering Google will save you time and frustration as
you take control of getting exactly the results you want.

This well researched guide to unlocking Google's secrets normally sells for
$14.95. But as an introductory offer, Jonathan Mosen's Get Going with Google
can be yours for only $9.95. Pay with any major credit card through pay Pal,
and instantly download and listen to your copy of Get Going with Google in
MP3 format, suitable for playback on your PC or any portable device.

You've been searching for the keys to unlock Google's full potential, and
now the search is over!

Re: mono fm on replay

2006-03-13 Thread Chris Skarstad
yes this is correct. Some stations may broadcast their fm signal in
stereo, but may broadcast on the internet in mono.
So Replay AV is not doing anything wrong here.

me to believe that it is the station and not replay that is at fault.

Re: Skype/mic help

2006-03-12 Thread Chris Skarstad
Hi Catherine
If you're having trouble making a skype call and you get an error
message about your recording device, it most likely means that you
may have the wrong one selected. go into your skype program, go to
tools, options and then go to sound devices. You should be able to
choose your sound card from there and have it point to a specific one
on your system. you can even have it set so if you get a skype call,
you can have the ring sound that happens come from your pc speakers,
but the output of skype will go to your USB headphones, because
Windows thinks of that USB Mic/headset as another sound device. the
other thought is that you may not have your headphones plugged in
properly. Make sure they're connected. Yeah I know, that's a pretty
obvious one, but you'd be surprised. Never hurts to check everything.

At 04:52 PM 3/12/2006, you wrote:
Hello,

Just subscribed to this list. Hope this is on topic, the problems I'm
having are to do with my mic/lack of understanding about audio
settings...wonder if anyone can help...

I recently installed Skype. At first when I did a test call where you
record yourself a message and see if you can hear it played back I couldn't
hear anything being played back. Skype said I'd need to check my audio
settings. So I worked through the audio set up guide at
http://www.skype.com/help/guides/soundsetup_win2k.html
(I'm using Windows XP).

As far as I can tell I followed the instructions properly; I did recheck a
few things because really don't understand much about setting up sound
stuff, and pretty sure I've done what it says. But the problem now is I
can't even get to try and make a test call. As soon as I go to make the
test call I get an error and it says problem with recording device; please
check audio settings and make sure you have the right microphone selected.

I've tried a few times since making the changes I thought I was meant to,
and keep getting this error. Trouble is I can't remember what changes I
made, and I can't work it out from going through the set up guide again
because I didn't need to make all the changes it said.

As far as making sure I've got the right mic selected goes, I'm not sure in
all the settings where that decision is made. Also, I know this sounds
crazy but I don't even know what mics there are to choose from: I have a
new computer and didn't take notice when I bought it of whether it has its
own internal mic; I thought I'm trying to use an external mic/headphones set
I've got...but perhaps there's another mic somewhere and somehow something
I've done is makeing it all conflict...

As far as I know my mic is working properly - I haven't used it for ages but
it worked last time I did.

I'm wondering whether I could tell people here exactly what settings I have
in audio settings and see if anyone can help?

I could probably fiddle about and work out what settings I had originally
before going through the audio set up guide; but then I'll be back to square
1 as far as using the mic goes...it'd be really good if people here could
help me understand what some of these settings mean, e.g. whether I've muted
the right thing in audio settings according to Skype's audio set up guide.
And is there any other way I can test if my mic's working?

Anyway if that's ok, I'll describe my current audio settings...

Catherine

Re: Replay A V question repost

Hi Don
I don't believe it's possible to do that, at least I've not seen
anything in the options to speed up any recordings. I know you can
schedule times for recording from several different sources, but I
don't think Replay AV can do that.
Maybe I'm wrong? If I am, I'm sure someone will let me know.

Hello,

I understand that Replay A V can create recordings of material streamed
from web sites. However, I would like to know whether the program can
be used to do some accelerated recording.

The Total Recorder driver destroys the functionality of my system; so I
installed Total Recorder without its driver. Unfortunately, this
precludes me from using its accelerated recording feature. So what I
really want to do is to use Replay A V in some sort of accelerated mode
if it is available.

Thanks for feedback.

Dunno if anyone's answered your question yet, but yes, the demo
version of Replay AV only lets you record 5 mb, or about 15 minutes
of a stream and then it quits. This will give you enough time to
decide wether or not it works well enough aparently.

version numbers of Winamp, was RE: That Pesky Little No Disk In Drive Message Has Shown Up Again!

2006-03-10 Thread Chris Skarstad
hi. The absolute latest version, as of March 10, 2006, is version 5.21.
I think that when people write down these version numbers, they are
forgetting to put in zeros where there should be. Nullsoft has this
interesting habbit of releasing versions such as 5.05, 5.091, 5.092
and so on. This would explain that you see people writing down
version numbers like 5.5, 5.94 and so on.
It can be very confusing I agree. But i can tell you with 100%
certainty, that the latest version number is 5.21.
That is the absolute latest version, I promise.
As for pam's problem with the no disc in drive, I'm wondering if it
somehow relates to some kind of other drive that may be connected via
USB or something else. If there is one, and windows is looking for
it and there's nothing there, then that may be something. it's a long
shot, but that's my guess. The only way I know how to temporarily
disable autoplay is to press the shift key when a cd is inserted, but
I don't know how to disable it otherwise. There has to be a way though.

winamp. I did close that window and it didn't come back. I also saw
Autoplay pop up and disappear.

Should I do anything about this or should I leave well enough alone?

If it continues to give me trouble, what then should I do? Will need to

Re: replay radio problems

2006-03-09 Thread Chris Skarstad
hi Ray

I didn't know this until another list member clued me in, but
aparentlysome streams*have* to be recorded via your sound card
because they're protected by what is called a broadcast flag. So for
these streams, what I would do is just record those through your
sound card, and for others, try different streams. For me, the
capture as mp3 has worked almost every time accept for once, when
Replay AV gave me an error message about converting to
mp3. Aparently there's a bit of an issue with converting some real
audio streams to mp3. Hopefully the replay folks can work on making
it more reliable. Anyways, just keep at it, and go into your
settings and make sure that you don't have Replay AV set up so that
it splits files on its own. if it loses the connection to the stream
then obviously it's going to create another file when it picks up the
stream, but if you leave all the choices in that section at the
defaults, you should be fine.

Re: replay success

2006-03-09 Thread Chris Skarstad
hi Kurt
I just had a thought, not sure if this makes any difference. In most
of your posts, you mention using Replay, and not Replay
AV, there is a slight difference between the 2
programs. ReplayRadio will *only* record from your sound card,
whereas Replay AV will capture the stream as an mp3 without
interupting your sound card while the recording is happening.
When you install Replay AV, you also get a demo copy of Replay Radio
to try. So if you've been trying to use Replay Radio, that may be why
you might be experiencing some of the problems. Then again, if
you've been using Replay AV all along, thenjust ignore this message
here. Just thought I'd throw that clarification out there for
anybody else who might be confused by the 2 programs.

look at the folders. I won't actually know if they all worked until
Friday, but I am happy with the results. It looks like they all got
converted to MP3 and although my wife isn't happy about it because it
took about three hours, I certainly feel a sense of accomplishment.
Anyway, I may cut back on the MP3 settings a little, but this was a
really good test. One of the messages said check the raw stream and I
think that was part of the problem. Also, I had some success but very
slow copying programs to MP3 with the copy utility. There is also a hot
key list buried somewhere in there you might want to look at. Anyway, I
already feel this thing has paid for itself in allowing me to customize
so much. It makes it so easy, when it works, that it is very much worth
the $49. Now I can record programs I would otherwise miss and have them
to listen to and in nice folders. I just wanted to let everybody know.

Yes, lots of gibberish in there, but that's the direct link. To get
these other reviews and other things Jonathan records, subscribe to

But open up your Podcatching software and then copy and paste the
following address into it, by first hitting control plus n.

not sure about all this podcast stuff? then press enter on the

Some stations that stream their audio on the net do not stream the
exact same things due to copyright restrictions. In other words, you
could hear When Radio Was on your AM station, but the internet stream
could have something completely different, because the station may
have obtained the rights to play the show on the station, but not to
stream it over the internet. Is what I'm saying making any kind of
  sense?
Setting up your own schedule is quite easy, as long as you remember
the address of the station, the start and end times of the show you
want to record, and you can decide in which audio format you want the
recording to be in. There is plenty of Old Time Radio programming
available in the Replay AV guide, so if you're into that, search

cannot be scheduled. Also, it seems, and more testing is necessary
because I don't know how to do this, that some streams are banned at
certain times during such commercial shows. I tried to get When radio
was last night and got a local feed for the weather instead. Since I
still don't quite understand how to set up a show given radio station
information you have entered, that is how to schedule a show on your own
I don't know. I wanted to schedule KSL from 10 PM pacific to 11 PM
pacific to get when radio was, but can't figure out how to do it. If I
can figure how to make my own schedules, and I locked up my machine this
morning trying to get a link to KSL, I can try that and set up my own

actually a jazz program on CBC. I have difficulty filling out the forms
because you have to remember what goes in each field of some of the

Re: replay observations

2006-03-08 Thread Chris Skarstad
hi. It's probably a lot easier if you go with replay AV, since it
doesn't utilize your sound card while it records the stream you're
trying to record, like I said earlier that is the absolute beauty of
this program.
So you're much better off going with Replay AV, rather than just
using Replay Radio itself.
To clarify, Replay Radio, and Replay AV are 2 separate programs,
independent of each other. You can not use both programs at the same
time, but you have the option of trying both when you install the
demo of Replay AV.
I love Replay AV, because I can record a stream in the background and
at the same time I can chat on Skype, read e-mail or surf the net
with software speech, and it'll record a show for me and I can just
listen later when I'm ready. It's awesome.

drivers have been know to give some people problems. Fortunately, it is
easily uninstalled should it prove problematic. RD

2006-03-08 Thread Chris Skarstad
Hi Ray

Be very careful when using these sound card drivers, they've been
known to cause problems. If you primarily use software speech and
don't have a hardware synthesizer,you may experience problems. I
won't even tell you what happened the time I tried to use Total
Recorder and what it's sound card driver did to my system, ug!Really,
you are just probably better off using Replay AV without the inhansed
sound card driver, because in 99.9% of instances I've seen, it's not
really necessary.
If you'd like to try it though, let us know what happens.

Re: replay mistake on MP3

Hi Kurt

I've had a similar thing happen, at least when I convert real audio
to mp3. now if it's every single stream you try to record, you might
like to make sure the stream is active. It's entirely possible there
could be problems with it, in which case it won't record.

Re: MAKING PROGRESS

2006-03-08 Thread Chris Skarstad
Hi Ray
Clearly, there is some kind of problem between your computer and the
stream you're trying to record. Have you listened to the stream in a
media player like Winamp or Windows Media player or another one to
make sure you can receive it without any problems. Remember, Replay
AV has to be able to capture the stream one way or another weather
it's through your sound card or by some other means, and the fact
that it keeps reconnecting suggests some kind of internet
congestion. The station you're listening to may also have 2 streams,
one for dial-up listeners and one for broadband. If you're on a
dialup connection and you're atempting to record the broadband
stream, then there's your problem right there, your connection simply
is not going to be fast enough to record this stream. If you're on a
broadband connection, then you certainl have enough bandwidth, but
there's a problem somewhere else.

Hi Mac, the easiest thing to do is to press the letter H to move through by
heading. About the fourth heading from the top of the page is currently the
review. I don't have the direct URL for the MP3 at present but if this
doesn't work for you I can try and grab it. Alternatively, someone
subscribed to the podcast can get it for you easily.

I was given a link, from Chris skarstad, who is subscribed to your podcast,
for the Replay Radio AV review. I am not all that adept with copying and
pasting links and URLs, plus I am not all that adept at subscribing to
podcasts, as of yet. That being the case, could you give me a link to the
DVD Audio Extractor review? When I went to the Mosen Explosion, awhile ago,
to get the Replay Radio AV review, it took me quite awhile to find it. If
it's not too much trouble, could you do this, for those of us novices, who
don't have the expertise, yet, to get these links, quickly? It would be
greatly appreciated! I cannot always get Control F to do this!

Many Thanks,

Re: replay problems

2006-03-07 Thread Chris Skarstad
Ray
Is this happening on *every single* stream you atempt to record, or
just one and you haven't tried any others? What I'm thinking is
there may be a problem with the particular stream. Try a couple of
others by going to the guide and scheduling a show to record, and let
us know what happens.
As I mentioned before, or maybe I didn't, I had tried to set replay
up so that it would record seggments of a longer file, btut somewhere
along the line, it only recorded 13 seconds of a file and then
created more and more. at some point I had over 600 files in a
folder, oops! Oh well, you live and learn. Another thought is,
perhaps you are atempting to capture a stream that is too fast for
your connection to handle. If you're on dial-up, and you're trying to
capture a stream that is broadband, then logic suggests that you
would not have enough outgoing bandwidth to listen to, or capture the
stream, which would mean that you wouldn't be able to record it. Let
us know how you get on with this.

At 08:05 AM 3/7/2006, you wrote:
Hi folks,

It only plays for 3 seconds. And when I go to the play tab, even though
I have scheduled one recording, there are two or three files of the
same length.
I keep hearing jaws saying retry reconnect, retry reconnect.
After the capturing is done.
So it is simply not connecting and recording for some reason.
Any suggestions?
Thanks.

Re: replay observations

2006-03-07 Thread Chris Skarstad
Hi Kurt
Some stations that stream their audio on the net do not stream the
exact same things due to copyright restrictions. In other words, you
could hear When Radio Was on your AM station, but the internet stream
could have something completely different, because the station may
have obtained the rights to play the show on the station, but not to
stream it over the internet. Is what I'm saying making any kind of sense?
Setting up your own schedule is quite easy, as long as you remember
the address of the station, the start and end times of the show you
want to record, and you can decide in which audio format you want the
recording to be in. There is plenty of Old Time Radio programming
available in the Replay AV guide, so if you're into that, search
around and give some of the shows a try.

Once you've done it a few times it gets easier. Don't give up on it yet.

that stream on the net do not

At 08:19 PM 3/7/2006, you wrote:
Well, when not busy working I have been playing with the Replay-AV. Here
is what I have noticed. Your streams will not only capture as MP3 even
if you request that. Some of them are in RM anyway, even if some are in
MP3. Many well-known commercial shows (when radio was is an example)
cannot be scheduled.
If I
can figure how to make my own schedules, and I locked up my machine this
morning trying to get a link to KSL, I can try that and set up my own
schedule. One entry which was supposed to be Monday night playhouse was
actually a jazz program on CBC. I have difficulty filling out the forms
because you have to remember what goes in each field of some of the
survey information and that is with Jaws 7. I like the program a lot,
and if I can figure out some of these things so I can schedule my own
captures better I will like that too? Am I paranoid or do they actually
only serve a certain number of airings of a particular show and do they
ban the rest or just don't list? Those are my observations, possibly
most out of ignorance but interesting points whatever the answer. Hope I
haven''t covered ground already covered. I listened to Jonathan's
review, and if you want to start out with a tutorial I would gladly pay
for, that would be a good one. Also, and off topic I know is that I
don't know where to hear the Mosen explosion live and somehow missed the
fact that it even existed till I heard his podcast. Sorry about this
being so long. Feel free to correct any really stupid mistakes I have
made here. Kurt

Re: Winamp and That Darned No Disk Message Again

2006-03-05 Thread Chris Skarstad
hi Pam
I'm not sure I quite understand everything you're saying here. I'll
quote your message below and see if I can help.

At 07:00 PM 3/5/2006, you wrote:

again.

Ok, so are you saying that you went all the way back to Winamp
version 1.9? Wow, that's a ways to go back, i would definitely
recommend that you stay in the 5.0 versions because 1.9 came out in
what was it, 1999 i think it was?
Either way, stick to the 5.0 series, if not the 2.0 series.

What could be causing this? I have also seen autoplay pop up in
Windows Media Player, but it disappeared as fast as it came and
didn't mess with the disk drives. What is that thing, anyway?

Autoplay is a feature that allows cds to play automatically once
inserted into your cd rom drive. I have absolutely no clue why this
would effect Winamp. It plays cds, but all Winamp really does is
try to use the Windows cd player and just routes it through there so
you can operate it via Winamp. In other words, Winamp grabs onto the
functions of the Windows CD player and allows you to use the same
Winamp commands to play your cds. x to play, v to stop, b to move
forward, z to go back, etc.
Again, this shouldn't be happening obviously and it's a bit beyond my
knowledge as to how to fix it.

I also find that I must not have known what to select or not, because
1.9 tried to download the mp3 files rather than launch them.

Ok, when you say this, are you talking about an internet stream, ACB
Radio Interactive and others? If so these are not actually mp3
files, these are streaming stations where the info is downloaded to
your computer, bit by bit and sent to you through your internet
connection. so it's not an actual file.
Winamp can not actually download mp3 files, all you can do is listen
to them with it.

If you get a dialogue box asking you if you want to download
something rather than to start playing it, then I believe what might
be happening is that Winamp has not been told to play these streams
automatically. Winamp is a pretty damn good program, but it's not
quite smart enough to know what files that you want it to play, so
you must first go into the preferences with control plus p, find the
tree view and find the section called file types. you should only
have to arrow down a couple of times to get to this. if you press
your tab key a couple of times you should hear select all button. you
want to press this so that Winamp will know that youu want it to play
all the file types it can at least when you install it. After you do
this, tab over to the close button, press the space bar and you
should be back at the Winamp window. Now, try going back to the ACB
Radio tuner, or the website and try listening to one of the stations
and I bet you it'll play without any problems.
while a station is playing, you can press alt plus i and that station
will be added to your bookmarks, think of these as favorites. you can
access these at any time.

I hope this clears up a couple of issues. I'm still just as stumped
as you are about the autoplay issue and while it's acting in the way it is.

There's gotta be a reason for it though.

Re: Winamp and That Darned No Disk Message Again

2006-03-05 Thread Chris Skarstad
Hi Pam
Ok, it's just like i said before, simply go into your options and
press the select all button, and then you can just uncheck .asx files
to listen to your windows media player imbeded stream.
Make sure that Windows media player is not playing your mp3 files
though, so you'd also need to go into the options, file types i
believe it is and make sure that mp3 is unchecked. see, you gotta
make these damn players behave themselves!!
Hope that helps.

Chris,

didn't write it again! I repeat...sheesh!

So just take away the 1, insert a 5, and you've got my intended message.

Yes, I have been talking about Internet streams, which I am now
playing exclusively in Windows Media Player. As I said, I'd like to
get back to Winamp in order to have the same control of the streams I
once had.

I was very surprised when 5.9 tried to download, rather than play.

Actually, I don't want a couple of the Media Player files checked
because one of our favorite stations is played through an embedded
player and will not play in Winamp, or at least I have had to go back
and uncheck .asx files to get it to stream.

So I guess it's still a mystery; right? It sure is for me. Any more
thoughts gratefully welcomed.

Re: Winamp question

hi Michael
to turn on the equalizer and hear the differences in the different
presets, hit the letter n. Note that you must first have any of the
Winamp windows open and in focus to do this, otherwise it obviously won't work.
Also, more importantly, you should upgrade to the most recent
screenreader friendly version, which is version 5.13, available at
http://download.nullsoft.com/winamp/client/winamp513_full.exe
That's a direct link to the file. While it's not the most recent
version, it's just as usable as previous versions were, and version
5.13 also fixes a major security bug.Version 5.2 most definitely
is still screenreader friendly, accept in the case of the newest
version of Winamp library, which is a big hastle to screenreader
users. If you'd still like to give it a try though, you can get
version 5.2 from:
http://download.nullsoft.com/winamp/client/winamp52_full_emusic-7plus.exe
hope this is helpful.

hi. If you use windows xp or 2000, ditch that silly accessible

It is way better, has more features and requires absolutely no

It even has direct support for Winamp built right in.

2006-02-27 Thread Chris Skarstad
Hi Kevin. hey that's certainly admirable. But the bottom line is you
gotta use what works. So try both programs and use whichever one
works better for you. I think at the time accessible podcatcher was
created, iPodder was only at version 1.0 and to be honest, wasn't
very accessible.
Since that time however, significant improvements have been made.
It's like a completely different program now, it's awesome.
Juice is the best free program out there. If you're using xp this is.

the library *is* somewhat usable in Winamp 5.2

2006-02-25 Thread Chris Skarstad
Hi folks

Last night while reading e-mail on another list completely unrelated
to anything of interest to audio enthusiasts, a buddy of mine said
that he figured out how to get the library in 5.2 to read, so
naturally I read on. Here's what you have to do to get it to work, at
least with JAWS 7.0, you Window-eyes dudes will have to figure it
out, maybe there's a workaround for you too.

1. Open the library, and go to the online services section and press
right arrow to open it.
2. Now arrow down to Shoutcast radio.

3. Now here's where it gets kinda tricky. First you'll need to press
insert plus z to turn on your JAWS virtual cursor.
4. In the original directions, my friend told me to left click, this
is to say to press the left mouse button, located 2 keys to the left
of the numpad slash key, usually used for switching to different cursors.
What *should* happen is a web page should come into focus. You
should then be able to search for more stations and pressing enter on
them starts a station playing. This is absolutely not a perfect
solution because there are still some accessibility concerns. For
example, if you move focus away from the library and go back to it,
you need to do the the turn on the virtual and left click shuffle,
and in some cases, you may even need to route your pc cursor to your
JAWS cursor to bring things into focus. So again this is not a
perfect solution, but it's a lot better than it was before. It gets
us where we need to be, but the interface will hopefully get better
soon. I'm sure that maybe some JAWS scripts could be made so that
when focusing on that part of the library the webpage can grab the
focus. Anyways, I thought I'd bring this to your attention. I'm
planning on writing to the developers and tell them of my findings
and tell them we're a little further along, but most definitely not there yet.

Well, it's not entirely Australian programming,
there are lots of shows from us Americans like

Re: winamp 5.2 library

2006-02-25 Thread Chris Skarstad
Hi Paul

You are correct, you *can* choose which interface to use during the
install, and the modern skin is not a good idea because it presents
many access issues. But we're talking about 2 completely different
things here. When Winamp 5.2 came out, the makers changed the look
and the feel of the library, so that's where the problem lies.
Again, you are correct that the classic skin should be used, but the
library is a completely separate issue. So even if you chose the
classic skin during the instalation, you would still have the problem
accessing the library.

Re: How does one know about DSL speed

2006-02-25 Thread Chris Skarstad
hi. The thing I would do is to find out exactly how fast your
current plan lets you go, and then just set your player up for the
option that best fits that. Since I have no idea how fast your plan
goes, I can't say anymore, but that's what I would do if I wasn't sure.

Re: My Review of Replay AV

2006-02-23 Thread Chris Skarstad
Hi. Actually, as Jonathan points out in the review and
demonstration, you can record up to 10 shows all at the same time,
this is assuming of course you have the bandwidth to push that. If
you're on dial-up, you won't be able to. But if you have broadband
this shouldn't be much of a problem.

Re: Winamp 5.2 is Available

2006-02-22 Thread Chris Skarstad
hi. I upgraded to 5.2, and I'm sad to say that i can't make much use
of the media library in this version. as it is now I'm not able to
figure out how to search for online radio stations or play them, all
the buttons appear to be graphical now. So to me this is a major
step backward in accessibility for Nullsoft. We should see if we can
get them to go back to the old interface which seemed to work just fine.

Re: My Review of Replay AV

2006-02-22 Thread Chris Skarstad
hi. I've got a quick question about ReplayAV.
When it saves your shows as mp3s, does it save them all in one
folder, or will it save all your shows in different folders for each
show? Like for example if I wanted to record 3 different shows at
different dates and times, will all these shows go into a single
folder that I have to look through, or will each show I record have
its own individual folder with the name of the show so it's better organized?
Juice does this for all the different podcasts I subscribe to, and
if Replay did this it would be absolutely ideal.
Thanks.

Hi all, there has been some talk on this list recently about Replay AV,
described by the developers as replay Radio on Steroids. This software
allows you to record streams without occupying your sound card, meaning in
practice that you could record say ten streams at the same time, and have
them all encoded to MP3 for listening on a portable player.

I've produced a 45 minute audio review of this software, which is

Re: Why can't I play in Winamp?

2006-02-21 Thread Chris Skarstad
hi. but if you try to play the .cda file in Winamp, it won't
play. So, let's make this really super simple.

Use Winamp, or any other CD ripping program to rip the tracks from
your CD into mp3 or any other format you choose.

To make a compilation to play in a regular CD player, you need to
burn, not rip, but burn a cd of all your songs. Ripping and burning
are different processes.
So even if you just copied the.cda files from your cd to your hard
drive, Winamp wouldn't be able to play it, because all Winamp does is
access your Windows cd player to play the files, it doesn't actually
have a cd player built into it. Winamp just routes the cd player to
it and plays the CD through it instead of the CD player.
Hope that makes sense?

At 09:07 AM 2/21/2006, you wrote:
Hi,

From what you say, you did not rip the file. You just copied the
index file pointing to the audio files on the cd to your folder. To
play the songs in winamp, Just highlight the files and press the
applications key, thus bringing up a context menu. Play in winamp
should appear in this menu. Just press enter on that option and your
music should be played. Hope this helps.

Rusty At 09:13 PM 2/20/2006, josh n rivera spake thusly:-
 Hello friends,
Wonder if anyone has a thought on this? I coppied a few pieces from a CD
to a folder on my c drive. Then I tried to play them. However, although
winamp did open, nothing plays. Here's how I did it. First I highlighted
the items I wanted to pick out from the cd. Next I coppied them to the
clipboard. Then I coppied them to this folder I mentioned before. So they
do appear in the folder, but will not play in win anp. Any ideas?

Re: Why can't I play in Winamp?

2006-02-21 Thread Chris Skarstad

At 11:50 AM 2/21/2006, Josh asked:

Where do I go to find out how to rip from cd to mp3? Do I do that with
Nero or a program like that?

Nope, you would use Nero to burn your cd, not rip the audio from
it. When you rip a cd, you convert it to mp3. You can use CDEX,
Easy CD DA Extractor, or if you wanna take a whole lot of time and
like using really slow programs, Winamp can do it. I found that even
the pro addition of Winamp, which claims to rip audio from your cds
as fast as your computer drive would allow, took twice as long as any
other program.
and my cd rom drive is 52x, so it seems to me it shouldn't take too
long. So get yourself one of those and convert your cds to mp3.
There's your answer on that one.

Now Josh continues...

Also, I installed the dsp audio stalker in
the plug ins folder of Win Amp, but I can't find it in the plugins in Win
Amp now. So where did it go? I hit ctrl p to bring up the prefferences,
but when I arrow down through the list that comes up, I can't get to the
wave out item. Can you help with this?

The Audiostocker is located in the DSP/effect part of the tree view,
not in the output section.
So go to dsp/effect in the tree view and you should find it there.

Hope that helps.

Hi. I think you may be slightly exagerating your comments. Sure, there's
some high end loss but not enough to make the station unlistenable. If you
have a decent pair of stereo speakers the sound is quite acceptable. You
should also be aware that any new radio station can possibly have teathing
problems. I heard a commercial station in Australia in 1980 which came on
the air and because their limiter wasn't working properly they had to keep
adjusting the sound to compensate. Foor goodness sake, give Jonathan a fair
go and remember where some of you got your start in broadcasting. If he
hadn't started ACB Radio Interactive some of you people who are so quick to
be critical wouldn't be broadcasting today.

hi. I've noticed the *exact* same thing, and I
know of 2 or 3 other people who have noticed it too.
It's as if there is absolutely no high end on the

something like a 24k or 32k mp3 stream may
sound. I'm not in any way complaining about this

hi. Well, I dunno what the hell it was you did
Jonathan, but it looks like the problem has been fixed!
We have all kinds of high frequencies on the
music now and it sounds a whole hell of a lot
better than it did yesterday! Sincein the
beginning it was just a synthesizer counting
down numbers, it occurs to me that everything was
probably just being sampled down to something
like 11025 hertz, rather than 44.1.

Well, whatever the case, it sounds great now!

The Minx, at http://www.the-minx.com, is a new Internet radio station
that launched at 8 PM US Central time on Tuesday evening. The stream
is a broad band 128 KBPS MP3 stream. While many of my Internet radio

  unlistenable

But something in your signal quality definitely needs adjusting.

Hi,

There is a square label in the back of the unit. This can
be peeled carefully off, thus revealing three screw holes. The one

on and you're set. Not sure to what level this boosts the signal. I
still cannot pick up the signal over a hundred feet or so, but its
clearly better.

Hope I can post this here.

I recently purchased a C Crane FM transmitter so that I can listen to books

I seem to recall reading about a hidden screw somewhere in the unit that
when turned, will increase the power/range.

Can anyone shed some light on this.

Re: Re[2]: A Freeware Racing Game

2006-02-11 Thread Chris Skarstad
You do not have to unload JAWS to get the game to work. Simply put
JAWS in sleep mode while the game is open and you can then keep JAWS
running while the game is on. To do this:
1. Go to your config manager while the top speed 2 game is running.
2. If you're using later versions of JAWS like 6 or 7, you may be
prompted to create a file for the program so simplyhit the ok button
and it'll be created for you.
3. Now in the configuration manager, go to set options, followed by
advanced...
4. Check the checkbox that says, sleep mode enabled. and tab once
more and check the checkbox that says unload synthesizer. and then
press ok and save your changes. You will now be able to play the
game with JAWS running and everything will work just as it
should. Makes it a hell of a lot easier for contacting others while
a game is in session or if you're ready to play, you can tell people
where you are.

At 12:22 AM 2/11/2006, you wrote:
I also have this program and me, i smash more theni win. i have to
unload jfw as well, the arrow keys won't work if i don't, now i hear

are they/ thank. At 06:09 PM 10/02/06 -0800, Paul Hutson said this:

Yes, it took me 2 tries to download the program because the first time I
only got about 160kb of the file so tried it again and was good to go.
Now, I've got to learn how to keep that BLASTED car on the track, haha.
Also, one tip that might also help is, turning off, or in my case,
completely unloading Jaws because otherwise, I just COULDN'T navigate the
 menus at all.
 Thanks for your help.

 Paul

Normally on this list we chat about audio as it relates to music and
production but I'd like to chat about a new game that has recently come
   out
and that's taking the blind gaming community by storm. The game is a
   Racing
game and it's called Top Speed2. The idea is you have your
 keyboard or a
stearing wheel and you race around tracks. The sound of the
 cars is most
Realistic and there are plenty of ad on cars and tracks. You also can
either host a server for 7 of your friends to play on or log in to a
   server
that's being hosted. If your in to sports you will most deffinately
   enjoy
this one. You'll play this game for hours. Now the cost you ask? Well
   the
fine developers in the Netherlands who wrote this game have decided to
   give
it away completely free of charge. You can go to:

   http://playinginthedark.net
and download the game and all the extra tracks and ad ons. Also you can
learn how to design your own racing cars and tracks and a few blind
  people
have already done this. Try this freeware game. I think you'll be most
   impressed.

Re: What is the best server

2006-02-03 Thread Chris Skarstad
The SHOUTcast server works just fine with Winamp and JAWS, absolutely
no accessibility concerns with it. What you need to do is familarize
yourself with the .ini file that comes with the server which is where
you make slight changes to it. It's actually written out in very
plane and very easy-to-understand English, and it's very easy to fill
in. Just save your changes when you're done and then start the server
and they'll take effect.

Re: Disapointed about H340

2006-01-26 Thread Chris Skarstad
hi. that is the wonderful, and awful thing about Rockbox. By the time the
Rockbox dudes are able to port the software to a model of player, it's
discontinued and you can't even buy them accept on Ebay. I do like my
archos player, but I really would like to be able to just go out, buy a
current model of player, install rockbox on it and do stuff with it.

I went to Iriver and found out they are sold out. All the dealers in Canada
are sold out too. There is Ebay but I don't want to buy used, long
distance.

I wonder how accessible the H10 series of players is.

Re: Winamp 5.2 Build 359 Beta is Available

2006-01-25 Thread Chris Skarstad
Hi. I agree. Absolutely no need to convert mp3 to mp4, that'd be silly to
do. Leave the mp3 as is and be happy. Most folks want everything in mp3
anyways.

At 08:05 AM 1/25/2006, you wrote:
Roden,

As I explained in a series of messages on this list, yesterday, it makes no
sense to convert an MP3 into an M4A. all that would do would be to make a
very good copy of a very poor copy of the original audio. It would NOT
convert a poor copy into a good copy. Unless you have access to an original
source, such as a CD or WAV file, from which to make an M4A file, you're
better off just listening to the mP3, as is.

Re: ipodder problems

2006-01-22 Thread Chris Skarstad
hi Kurt

Are you aware that you must enter a feed address for each book manually?
unfortunately you can't just go to a site and expect Juice to work for you
right off.
Juice will work with this site, you just have to know how to use it.
Find the address for the audio book you'd like to download, and then copy
it to your windows clipboard. Then, open the Juice receiver program and
then press control plus n. when it asks for a url, press control plus v and
if you did it right, the feed address will be in the edit box. then, press
the save button and the episodes will appear. by default, the first one in
the list will be marked for download, but the rest will be skip. to
download all the episodes at once, you must manually arrow down to each
episode in the list and press the space bar when you hear skipped. it will
then change that status to download. to start the download, press
f5. Juice will then retrieve all the episodes marked to be downloaded.
hope this helps.

can make more of it than I can. Kurt

hi. Just so you know, Nero Burning Rom will make copies as well, at least

Nero will work as well.

don't know about that, but I think this will work to make copies of my
CDs. Thanks to all for putting up with this. If anybody has had any
problems, please let me know before I buy it. I would appreciate it.

Won't the dvd player also play cd's? Most I know of will do this.

Hello Group
I want to copy a CD to a DVD what program would you use to do this?

There is a program named DVD Easy, but again I am not sure it will copy from
a CD to a DVD?
How would you do this?
The reason I want to do this is because a friend where we need to play the
concert program only has a DVD player.
