Soon after graduating my partner went over to Texas for a few months
to assist in some research at one of the universities. She brought
home some poppy seeds and after planting a few in the garden we soon
found the things sprouting all over the place. Poppies are nice so
we just let them grow. This is one of many plants that grew between
the cracks in the paving stones.

Most of them were black in the centre but occasionally we'd have a
 white one, as shown here.

 http://www.bluemoon.net.nz/photo/printsdb/view.php?p=166t=1

They're very interesting to photograph, particularly as the flowers
are coming out of the buds. The slightest hint of wind sends them
swaying all over the place so you need a very still day.

We've since moved house but we still have a good crop of poppies in
our herb garden because some seeds somehow hitched a ride with a
parsley plant we brought with us.

 Cheers,

Significant is a matter of opinion. Remember that 6 vs 8 Mpixels is
an area measurement, not a linear measurement.

9 Mpixel means 106% linear resolution improvement compared to 6
Mpixel. In real world terms, this means that if the current sensor
can achieve 16 [EMAIL PROTECTED] resolution, a 9 Mpixel sensor should achieve
approximately 17-18 [EMAIL PROTECTED] at best.

Typically, perceived resolution improvement is hard to call
significant in increments of less than 1.5x (150%) to 2x (200%) ...
It's simply hard to see it unless you're already working at the
perceptual limits of resolution. For an 8x10 to 11x14 inch print,
other factors such as paper surface and spot-spread will have a
greater impact on imaging quality.

Thanks for everyone's concern - it was overwhelming to be able to read
out your responses to the young man as he lay in bed, although I'm
surprised he heard me as i was competing with the cartoon network and re-
runs of Friends on the pull-down LCD TV - he is very thankful, as I am.

Good news: it's not appendicitis, rather a nasty viral infection of the
abdominal glands with symptoms much like appendicitis. Stefan improved
markedly this afternoon and the surgeon kicked him out. I think it was
when he was spotted using a tatty old teddy bear as an ad-hoc football
in the corridor that the decision may have been taken ;-)

We left at 8pm and he is back home now fast asleep in his bed, still
with some discomfort but nowhere near the levels I was half-expecting
him to reach this morning if it had been his appendix. As many have
pointed out, the pain is apparently excruciating and in some ways the
doctors expect one to breach this pain level as it provides good ground
for diagnosing appendicitis. Not a bad method - it works. Stefan didn't
reach the pain level. Quite the contrary: he improved, hence no
operation necessary - always a good thing.

Naturally I snapped him in his hospital bed doubtless he expects it to
appear on the web in due course ;-)

Once again, thanks for all your concerns. It once again illustrates what
a marvellous community of people there are here from across the world. I
 am indebted to you all.

Work the ISO resistor some.
That is, twist the ASA dial thru all the ASA settings.
Do it enough times to get any oxidation off of the contacts underneath.

And also run the exposure compensation ring back and forth, too, while
you're at it.

May as well run the aperture simulator a few times as well. On the LX it is
as prone to cause exposure problems as the ISO resistor, I expect this is
the same situation on other Pentax bodies.

What worries me is that Samsung wants the body but not the glass.
Though maybe, probably, it's about margin and market niche.
Will Pentax get the sensor for Photokina as part of a trade agreement
(body access for sensor access)? That would seem a typical arrangement.

Samsung is not a lens manufacturer. They will have to get lenses from

What I mean is that you the the 18-55 package but someone else's glass
label.
That's not Pentax, except perhaps for the package. And that's not a
significant

And why buy Pentax glass given the popularity of the Schneider name?
Old-timers know Schneider from the Kodak days (whether Retina or even the
first
126 bodies, let alone the digitals) and it's known in LF (it's definitely
the
best in that arena, though a bit pricey). Pentax has become a relatively-

This might very easily backfire. I don't want it to backfire, but it won't
be any surprize.

What I mean is that you the the 18-55 package but someone else's glass
label.
That's not Pentax, except perhaps for the package. And that's not a
significant
photo product by any streach.

And why buy Pentax glass given the popularity of the Schneider name?
Old-timers know Schneider from the Kodak days (whether Retina or even the
first
126 bodies, let alone the digitals) and it's known in LF (it's definitely
the
best in that arena, though a bit pricey). Pentax has become a relatively-
unknown entity in these circles. Comparatively, that is.

What popularity of the Schneider name? Pentax has had continuous product in
the consumer marketplace. Schneider is, by comparison, relatively unknown, a
brand name that is now being put onto cameras made by consumer electronic
companies in an attempt to have a little cachet value, since they have no
brand recognition in the camera business.
I think you'll find that the old timers either know the Pentax brand as very
high quality lenses, or they have already died of old age.
It would be unfortunate if Pentax ended up being a third party consumer lens
supplier, with their lenses being rebadged with another name, but if it gave
them the capital required to continue producing high quality lenses with
their own name on the nameplate, then I can live with that.

2005-12-22 Thread Juan Buhler
Interesting.

You know, I only care about Pentax because that's the mount of the
lenses I have. As long as the lenses are good, and relatively
state-of-the-art bodies are introduced that will take those lenses, I
couldn't care less what name is in them.

If, say, Cosina introduced a 12MP K mount digicam I would be all for
it. Pentax has many advantages, like ergonomics, small size, great
lenses. But their logo is not one of them.

If the Schneider lenses are rebadged FAs, Pentax still gets the money
for making them, making them able to stay in the business. If not,
that will mean someone else is making K mount lenses. Sounds win-win
to me, unless you just care about the name.

Re: Meter adjustment of ME

2005-12-22 Thread Jon Myers
I have brand new batteries of proper type, and have
run the aperture resistor and ISO resistor around
quite a bit, no change. Watching the meter while
making those adjustments shows quite linear change in
shutter speeds, not jumping around like I'd expect if
it was corroded.

I believe I've either got to use 4x exposure
compensation all the time, set the ISO for similar
effect, or take it apart and see if I can adjust it
back close to correct.

On a side note, I'm most impressed by the ME SE body,
even after using an LX for over a year now. True it
doesn't have all the wonderful bells and whistles of
the LX, but it's so TINY! The one I've got is in such
very nice condition too, aside from this meter issue.

I'm curious how it'd be with a silver 43mm Limited on
it. :)

  Work the ISO resistor some.
That is, twist the ASA dial thru all the ASA
 settings.
Do it enough times to get any oxidation off of
 the contacts underneath.

And also run the exposure compensation ring back
 and forth, too, while
  you're at it.

May as well run the aperture simulator a few times
as well. On the LX it is
as prone to cause exposure problems as the ISO
 resistor, I expect this is
the same situation on other Pentax bodies.
