RE: 4x% Kodachromes from WWII
From: John Coyle I started with blue flash-bulbs in 1967. They had a long burn time (1/40 to 1/60 second) with a rapid climb to full output, then an even peak output followed by rapid drop-off at the end of the burn. The 'M' setting on the camera I was using at the time (a Voigtlander Vito CD) was what you used for these bulbs, although the camera also had an 'X' setting for them new-fangled electronic flashes. The settings ensured that the shutter opened first, then the flash fired. The shutter speed had to be set at 1/30 or slower, so that the flash output occurred while the shutter was fully open, otherwise you'd get a black bar at one side or the other, where the film was unexposed. Aperture was calculated from the guide number of the flash and the speed of the film, and I found I could seldom close down beyond f8, even at 400 ASA. The bulbs were coated with a blue substance to match the colour temperature of noon daylight, so fill-in flash was possible. There was a third shutter setting option, FP ('flash-peak'), which would allow the use of bulbs designed for focal-plane shutters, and these you could use at speeds from 1/30th upwards to 1/1000th, although I never had a camera with that facility until I got a Rolleicord, where you could use the 'V' setting to fire the flash at any speed - basically because the shutter was a between-lens type. Open to correction on some of the technicalities, it's been a long time since I had to think about such matters! FP sync did that, the standard luminance chart for FP bulbs shows a sharp spike which then trails off at a relatively constant light out put for quite some time afterwords, I tried to find an image of that chart but couldn't. Just imagine a chart of these arbitrary numbers Flash fires -- 0 1 15 20 15 14 14 14 14 13 13 13 12 11 9 7 5 3 1 0 The shutter opens when the value drops to 15 to insure that the film is relatively evenly exposed. That's what FP bulbs were all about. M sync the shutter begins to open then the flash fires (on a leaf shutter before the shutter is fully open, but on a focal plane shutter after the shutter is fully open to capture as much of the light as possible. Re: Pentax Forums in depth review of the K-01
From my reading of the review, it doesn't say that the K-01's contrast detection AF is much worse than anyone else's, just that it's worse than phase detection AF. This is still true in general for mirrorless system cameras. I'm not saying it's great but merely that they didn't compare the contrast detection AF with anything else. Man, that's a whole gang of images! I do like yours a lot, but I can't seem to get my Like to take. I'm sure I've said it before, but I've always wanted to do storm photography out on the plains. We get some decent storms here in KY that would make nice photos if it weren't for the topography. Thank you, Frank! The Purina wall is one I've photographed dozens of times, but manages to keep frustrating me. The roof line of the building is extremely close to the top-left corner of that sign and it always ruins the image in my eye. And the flag on the front porch was the very thing that caught my eye. Re: 4x% Kodachromes from WWII
Bulbs like the Press 25, 25b's and GE 5, 5b's were, as I recall, good for both M sync with leaf shutters and X sync with focal plane shutters, but the shutter speed with X sync was maxed out at 1/30th. The b designation indicated a blue bulb for daylight fill and daylight balanced film. The clear bulbs were balanced for tungsten light. Later flash for the amateur market used smaller bulbs like the M-5 and later the peanut sized AG-1. The FP bulbs, used w/a focal plane shutter, were good across nearly all shutter speeds because of the long light peak. Some of the larger graflex-type flashes used the Press 40 bulb, which was about the size of a 60 watt light bulb. -p On 3/14/2012 7:54 AM, P. J. I think the M-sync fired the bulb first and then opened the shutter. FP sync did that, the standard luminance chart for FP bulbs shows a sharp spike which then trails off at a relatively constant light out put for quite some time afterwords, I tried to find an image of that chart but couldn't. I see some merit to this argument, but, really, all of us have to decide where to focus our attention, and we all have strengths, weaknesses, and gaps in our knowledge. (2) Most of the complaints were about the technical quality, particularly sharpness. This illustrates a widespread belief, especially in this sort of Internet forum, that perfect technical quality is essential to a good photograph. If that's someone's well-considered belief, fine, but it seems like a lot of people hold this belief without really thinking about it, or without appreciating how many of photography's past works would be rejected under it. Today I was engaged in a discussion about whether the Nikon D700 and D800 are suitable for making large prints (in the sense of Maybe the D800 is, but maybe not the D700.) My response was that if that kind of statement seems reasonable to you, you're saying there haven't been many adequate prints in the history of photography. It's a narrow technical view that, even I as a sensor and instrumentation geek, am getting weary of. No, of course HCB is not beyond criticism. No one is. I recall when news of his death was announced on this list, several said that they just didn't get why he was considered such a great artist, he was little more than a common street photographer. Hey, to each his own. I think what is interesting in this critique is exactly that they weren't criticizing HCB (they didn't appear to know it was his) they were critiquing the photograph. I found it interesting that the most sanctimonious posters were those that criticized the breaking of rules. They wanted to look at what was wrong with the photo rather than look at it as a whole and just see that it worked - spectacularly well imho. I wonder if those same posters, had they known whose photo it was wouldn't have been fawning over it. ;-) If HCB followed all the rules he wouldn't have been who he was. To be in position to get the good stuff you have to chase, as in be willing to travel to find the good storms and then be in the proper position for either the cell or a particular feature of the cell (like a wall cloud or the funnel or tornado that it spawns). Since most storms are moving, that means attempting to move with them as they go through their cycles (both lifecycle from birth to death and their cycles of occlusion and growth). It helps to have an interest in weather/meteorology to understand how/where supercells will form and how they behave - which might be in the best position to have a longer life or more likely to be a tornado producer - if that is what you are seeking. Nobody wants to see a tornado be a threat to life or property, and fortunately the vast majority of them occur in open country (which we have a LOT of out here on the Plains). Those of you with Android or iPhones (or iPads) interested in weather would do well to purchase the RadarScope app. It not only brings NEXRAD Level 3 radar imagery in real time to your phone, but also shows your location (if in proximity to the storm) on GPS capable phones. Rather, I see two main points: (1) The commenters are oblivious to the fact that it's a famous photograph, showing a weakness in the commenters' understanding of the history of the art form they're critiquing. I see some merit to this argument, but, really, all of us have to decide where to focus our attention, and we all have strengths, weaknesses, and gaps in our knowledge. As a neophyte, this is something I can appreciate more than most on the list, I suppose. That's why I'm so hesitant to offer critiques on others' works and instead choose to learn from the critiques that others offer. A case in point: Mark's photo of the columns from a few days ago. My eye really wanted to see that image in a horizontal perspective. But, after looking at it again, I understood that it simply wouldn't have worked nearly as well that way -- perhaps for the very fact that it would have been a concession to the eye's natural inclination. I'm glad for the ever-increasing capabilities of our equipment, but at some point you need to just look at the picture! This phenomenon actually makes me revel in my blissful ignorance. Not having any preconceived notions of what a photo should look like when I take it, I tend to gravitate toward taking photos that look how I want them to look. Having a great deal of technical knowledge can obviously help to achieve that end, obviously. But, there's a certain freedom in not being burdened with the strictures of technical perfection. That's not to say I wouldn't love to have all the knowledge that the gearheads on the list have; it would certainly help me to cut back on the number of clunkers I shoot. But, for the time being, I find it extremely satisfying when my images come out the way I envisioned them when I hit the shutter button. And if that turns out to be pretty crappy, at least I'll know the problem is in my eye and not the camera -- which is a much less expensive problem to fix. -- Walt -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions.

Re: Lightroom 4 released
Ok, I did a little poking at it. Basically, with Process 2012 selected, if you click the Auto button in the Basic panel Exposure area on a photo which has more than 5-10% of the image area at or beyond the white saturation point, Lr4 will do its best to pull the exposure down so that the whites and highlights are below the saturation threshold. On any more average scene, it will render exposure that is quite close to on the mark. Tapping the J key in the Develop module will turn on the white and black saturation clipping indicators ... that will show you whether Auto is useful for that scene. Re: I never enter photo contests BUT
I did this one. Theme: Landscape. Most Likes wins. Should anyone care to register at the (relatively new) camera-enthusiast.com forum, then they can Like their favorite image. If it happens to be mine, I thank you, but there are many worthy images there (and not a lot of Likes on any of them so far). My entry is the previously well-liked PESO image I took of a Kansas Gust Front: http://www.flickr.com/photos/pixelsmithy/4722534814/in/photostream/ The gallery of contest entries is found here: http://www.camera-enthusiast.com/forums/useralbums/fuji-x10-giveaway-submissions.7/view (Mine is in the last row, Waay down there, as I type this). Darren Addy Kearney, Nebraska I like the storm shot Darren. Photo contest rant follows. There seems to be no good way to run a contest. Subjectivity always enters into the picture. However this kind of contest seems to have more problems than the kind in which a select set of judges passes judgement. A big complaint from posters in this contest is that images near the top of the list seem to acquire more votes. That's entirely logical, those voting are not required to look at every image before voting. Hence as interest wanes or time slips by the images lower on the list tend to get fewer votes, regardless of their merit. A recent monthly photo contest run by an insurance company here in Idaho had a similar format, except that anyone that registered on the site was eligible to vote. So it was not really a photo contest, it was a popularity contest. Those that could encourage or ask the most number of friends to vote would garner the most votes, regardless of image merit. How is that remotely fair? I wrote the company regarding the issue, and their response was that they designed it to be a popularity contest. So much for that. I agree with your assessment, Tom. I think the point of most web site related contests is just to draw eyeballs or provide one more reason to come back, reload the page, whatever. In this case, it is also to spur more registrations for the privilege of entering or voting. No contest prize is given out of the goodness of any entities heart. It is being offered in exchange for something of greater value to the contest holder (advertising exposure, word-of-mouth, etc.) Darren Addy Kearney, Nebraska -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions.

Re: 4x% Kodachromes from WWII
From: P. J. Alling On 3/14/2012 8:32 AM, John Sessoms wrote: From: John Coyle I started with blue flash-bulbs in 1967. I think the M-sync fired the bulb first and then opened the shutter. FP sync did that, the standard luminance chart for FP bulbs shows a sharp spike which then trails off at a relatively constant light out put for quite some time afterwords, I tried to find an image of that chart but couldn't. The chart for M bulbs is more like this Flash fires - 0 1 15 20 15 10 5 3 2 1 http://camerapedia.wikia.com/wiki/Flash_sync Some older cameras support M sync, which supports flash sync with (now obsolete) medium-speed electric flash bulbs. Because flash bulbs take some time to generate their maximum light output, M-sync is timed to fire the flash slightly earlier, then opening the shutter so as to coincide with that peak output. -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions.

There is something about the composition that draws my eye around in a pleasing way. For me the things that make it pleasing have almost nothing to do with the subject matter, or the technical prowess of the photo. As an aside, at one point I wanted to design an experiment where you would measure the movements of peoples eyes as they looked at a picture, and do an analysis of the movements in the frequency domain, to see if visually pleasing shapes worked off movements with similar sorts of harmonic relationships as pleasing combinations of notes. -- Larry Colen l...@red4est.com sent from i4est -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions.

Re: Lightroom 4 released
Larry, You seem to shoot a lot in dark situations. Any auto mode is going to try to get the scene average up to near 18% gray, modulo trying to prevent highlight clipping. Bruce, An auto setting mode based on a selected sample area (of adjustable size) would be cool. There's a Lightroom forum on the Adobe site somewhere ... I have the address at home, not here. That would be a good feature request. In practice, I almost never use the auto mode at all. Most of the time, I can rough in adjustment for most of an entire session with two/three clicks in the Quick Develop panel before I even open a single image in the Develop module. I only click auto now and then, normally, to see what LR thinks of my exposures. Most of the time it doesn't change the photo enough to even notice what it did without looking at the sliders.
