The lens is wide open at 250mm, I'm hand holding it at 1/50 (or 5 times the nominal slowest shutter speed at that focal length) and I'm doing this all at ISO 2500. Re: Spoiled by the X-Pro1
I too used my K7 last weekend for the Mikado shots that I shared this week, having exclusively used the X-Pro 1 for a couple of months. Yes, it felt heavy, but there's no equivalent of the excellent 50-135 2.8 DA* lens or longer telephotos in the Fuji line-up so the K5 still has its place. Incidentally, I've never moved the focus point off centre. I've always focused then framed. But then you might have been joking on that point. One never knows... Re: PESO: Victory
Thanks, Bruce! I'd have preferred a framing that excluded those cars in the U-R. Me too!. Perhaps I can crop and clone them out, without losing the mirror. One of the nice things about Classic Car Night in our town is the large turn-out of cars, hot rods, bikes and people. That makes photography a bit difficult, however, because there are always other vehicle, or people, or store front, or a combination of these in the frame. That is part of the event, as well as part of the fun. I think our *official* fireworks display was canceled this year due to predicted thunderstorms. Not a particular loss as far as I'm concerned because they moved the location to downtown Raleigh last year and you can't really see them very well through the buildings. When they used to do them out at the state fairground the sky was wide open there was plenty of room for people to watch them. That's a difficulty photographing these guys especially with the sun where it is in this photo. If I get feather detail on the white breast the rest of him is too dark. I guess I could have pulled way back on the exposure and then worked it in photoshop but (a) it's too late because I only got a two shots (six total since I bracketed) then he flew off, and (b) I missed the focus a bit anyway so really there's not much use putting too much work into it. It's not a keeper and is really only of interest to me because so far it's the only juvenile tree swallow I've got to date. The focus may not be perfect, but it sure looks pretty sharp to me. FS: Low-mileage K-7 body, WR kit zoom, Tamron 24-135 lens
FS: Pentax K-7 body, low shutter count (2,295), EX- condition. Purchased from a list member (but I don't remember who!). Includes printed manual, original box, strap, new non-Pentax battery and non-Pentax charger. $250. Pentax DA 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 AL WR lens, EX+ condition. I had bought this lens new and sent it back to Pentax before the warranty was up because of sub-par performance. They calibrated it to factory specs and it now performs very, very well for this kit lens! A weather resistant lens, it's a great match on the weather-resistant K-7. $100. Tamron SP 24-135mm f/3.5-5.6 macro AF aspherical (IF) lens, includes front and rear caps and Tamron soft zippered case, EX condition. This is a film-era lens and is therefore technically full frame. Balances well on the K-7 body though it isn't weatherproof. $150. It's this lens, for reference: http://www.pentaxforums.com/userreviews/tamron-sp-af-24-135mm-f-3-5-5-6-ad-aspherical-if.html Photos available upon request. OT Orb knock-off arrived today [Re: GESO The Brawley]
For Walt and everyone who was waiting with 'bated breath for the arrival of the Chinese knock-off Apollo Orb to Walker Studios ... it's here! And the good news is that it works as advertised. I did a quick light test: it's very efficient, acting a lot like a parabolic reflector; it only loses a 1/3rd or 1/2 stop of light through the diffusion material. The light output is very uneven across the front surface -- 1-1/3 stop difference top-to-bottom -- but the same issue occurs with the real Westcott Apollo because of how high the flash ends up inside it. That can be fixed with a third-party umbrella/flash mount doohickey that puts the light close to the center, that I plan to get sometime. The octagonal diffusion material velcros into place easily and fits well. This Orbalike even comes with a cloth velcro-closing carrying-case/cover. No such thing came with the Apollo, oddly enough. It's ultra compact: folded-up in the case it's 29 x 6 x 1.5. The unknown at this point is how robust it is. It is made just like an inexpensive rain umbrella, but with a silvered interior and no handle. So it has ribs made of those light metal U-shaped channels that are easily twisted and eventually collapse. I don't expect this thing to last for years and years. But it feels very solid and rigid when open and should survive the odd stand tip-over. In comparison, the Westcott Apollo uses pairs of fiberglass rods, like fishing gear, carefully stitched into the fabric, and the silver interior is much brighter and more reflective. But this Orb-clone is $25 with shipping and the Westcott is $125. Next step: shoot with it. Last night I succumbed to LMA (light modifier addiction) and ordered a new softbox: http://www.ebay.com/itm/300896302632?ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT This design is ideal for hotshoe flashes because it is very efficient, light weight, and behaves like an umbrella so all umbrella doodads work with it. With a multi-shoe you can put three flashes in it for big light. Put a high wattage CFL in it for video. Plus the octagon shape gives a round catch-light in eyes. It's a smaller knock-off of the Westcott Apollo Orb but is only $25 (free shipping) rather than $125. I just hope it doesn't fall apart too fast. It's shipping by rowboat from Shenzhen so don't expect a report on it for a while. That certainly looks like a pretty useful setup! I'll bookmark it and wait until you have a chance to see if the build quality is reasonable. -- -bmw -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions.

Re: sick transit my istD ???
Well I did Dave Brook's trick of taking out batteries and letting camera alone for a while - wiped the lid part with a soft lint free cloth... didnt try to reach inside contacts. Leaving the camera without batteries for a while did it finally but this happening when I really needed the camera ... well.. very scary ann On 7/5/2013 20:52, Ann Sanfedele wrote: I had hoped someone would say that's probably all it is and that someone will do it for me - I'm afraid of doing it myself ann On 7/5/2013 20:10, Steve Sharpe wrote: Clean the battery contacts? I know I got them in right because reversing where they go the info screen shows nothing. My rechargeables are being recharged, so I loaded 4 double AA's that are brand new -- and I know they work. This is particularly upsetting as I reluctantly promised an old friend I would shoot his wedding - just the posted before photos - for a small amount of cash (big for me, small for him) in August. scary. My refrigerator is dying, too and it is only 2 years old - fortunately under warranty and it may only be busted gaskets (door wont stay closed) and those are being replaced but it has been a circus ehre for a couple of weeks. Finally got my great distance glasses and the +250 magnifying flip-ups for working on computer -- all GOOD in that area. and now.. I cant let John do all the kvetching here can I ? Re: GESO: Boston fireworks
Usually this many photos in a Geso put me off - but these , in the index view, are just really enjoyable. Every bit as good as the TV coverage of our stuff I watched. Used to be able watch the fireworks ehre from my roof, but they moved them to the westside. Thanks for viewing J.C. and commenting. Well I did use a tripod that's almost as good as full frame. Of course FF would make my angle of view wider and the fireworks seem farther away.
