Re: Your opinion about school (group) photographs
A local guy (Estate agent & part-time photographer) has the monopoly in Phalaborwa. He just takes the shots (individual & group) & has them processed to order by a Photo Lab. The quality of his work is good. His prices are not outrageous but he must still make a handsome profit. The rip-off artists are those taking sporting shots like road running. Re; Cheetahs (Wrap up)
Thanks to all who looked & commented. I took about 20 shots but may were spoiled by shrubbery, heads turned away and approaching cars in the background. I had been using an old Sigma 170-500 APO but found it wanting in sharpness. Last week I bought a newer DG version which is rated much better. These were my first serious shots with this lens & I am very satisfied (the poor man's D-FA 150-450?). I used it HH with the Jack Davis TAV, 1/2000, f8 formula. The reviews suggest it may be bit soft at f5.6 but I will give it a try next time. Now for some bird shots! By the way, we have had 100mm rain overnight. A big relief. Re: Mac help needed!
Sounds like a failed drive. Here's an article I found that has the sounds different kinds of HDD failures make: https://tierradatarecovery.co.uk/the-sounds-made-by-failed-hard-drives-and-what-they-mean-for-hard-drive-recovery/ If the drive still spins but can't be read, it could be failed electronics in the case or a failed circuit board on the drive itself. I have heard of drives being "restored" by replacing the circuit boards. I wouldn't trust it for continued use, but it "might" work for long enough to let you rescue your photos. The info I find on the internet is mixed. Some sites suggest it can work. Some sites suggest it can work if you swap the BIOS from your existing drive to the new PCB, and some sites suggest it won't work at all. A data recovery site might be your only hope. Re: Your opinion about school (group) photographs
It's an assembly line process. The photographer maybe has 15 minutes to get the group in, seated & settled down. He'll be lucky if he gets time to shoot 3 frames, so approx 23% of the students with their eyes closed ain't bad. Probably gets better with high school students and worse with elementary school students. But, then, I understand that when you have some opportunistic shots, you want to have some "safety net": it's better to err on the side of too much in focus than not enough. Your opinion about school (group) photographs
Dear PDMLers, I'd like to hear your opinion on this, especially from the point of view of those who did/does "seating session" photography (if anybody). We just received the annual class photograph for my child. (We usually do not purchase individual ones, but buy group photographs, as a memory for the kid.) We've had some photographs from the previous years, and the quality varies. Most of the time all these photographs are ... ghm ... at the "OK" level. But it is expected, so, I am sort of content with that. It was only once that the quality was above my expectation. And I think it is typical for different times and places: I remember that most most of my formal class photos were mediocre. One was so bad that the parents rebelled and made the photographer to redo the shooting properly (or maybe they got a different photographer, and forced the first one to refund the money, I don't remember). So, here comes my question: On this year photograph, I see two kids with their eyes closed, and three with their eyes not visible at all because their glasses were totally covered by the flash reflection. So, 5 out of 19 kids (and 3 teachers) have their eyes not visible. Do you think this is normal? My thinking is as follows: Seating-session photographs (i.e. posed) is a separate area where one needs to have a skill to have it right (setting, light, poses, people management), plus some when it concerns kids. And that's what the photographer gets her/his money for. I do not expect a masterpiece, but I'd like to see no trivial problems. Is my expectation unreasonable? Re: Well this sux.
Well, I'm talking about flash, and according to Boz's site, the Super Program supported OTF TTL flash exposure control, as did all the auto focus film bodies I checked. So did the *ist-D series of digital cameras, but that worked so poorly that I'm not surprised that most people don't realize it was available. Yes the only body that used OTF for both normal metering and flash metering was the LX, but once again the discussion was about why the FTZ flash series won't work with digital bodies except at full power. It also worked well with K/M lenses though it obviously loses even the small amount of automation supported with modern digital interface cameras. Within it's limited parameters it gave good exposures, is compact, and now it's broken. It just stopped firing, either when mounted to the camera or when the test button is pressed. Based on that I'm pretty sure that I know what's wrong, it has a blown secondary capacitor. It would probably be an easy fix, if I had a schematic, but finding the part without one wouldn't be cost effective, let alone the effort involved, for a flash I could probably replace for $10. Worse it would probably cost more than that to order the capacitor. Sometimes I miss Radio Shack. -- America wasn't founded so that we could all be better. A very nice set of photos. The subjects were obviously chosen carefully, and the framing is excellent. Most intriguing to me is the pallet. The colors displayed in the set just work together so nice, and their beauty is complemented by careful and correct rendering. Well done. Thanks all! I’ll go back in later and add some more descriptive captions to supplement the uninformative file numbers. Igor, yes the grand canal shot is of the Grand Canal in Venice. As is the smaller canal. The blue-topped church is on Santorini, the red topped chapel is on Mykonos. The background for the yacht image is the coast of Santorini, if you look closely you can see the whitewashed buildings in a jumble along the clifftop. Jack, the shot you tagged is interesting. I liked the scene well enough to stop walking in the rain long enough to pull out the camera and compose/shoot. And I was pleased with the result. But I very likely would have pressed onward to a warm dry interior just down the way, but I wanted a “for the record” shot of our hotel and hadn’t done one before. (You can see the Hotel Falier sign in the back center.) As I went back through I noticed that there is a 2nd one by Meg that I had not acknowledged before, the one just before the Gianfranco shot. Also I should comment that while most of the images are from Venice or the Greek Isles, the first bird shot is from in front of our house in Michigan, the wood stork at the end is from the Everglades. And the structure in #2 across the pond is the A.B. Dow Home and Studio, a local attraction and the center of a major Mid-Century Modern revival in our community. An interesting place to visit. Re: Mac help needed!
PJ, When this happened on a PC laptop I had a dozen years ago, I updated the BIOS to fix it (with our tech support guy at my elbow). I know that the EFI in Macs works somewhat differently, but wonder if it has acquired a mutation. Fortunately, I have a Time Machine backup of the data, which is intact. I plan to duplicate it tonight (using my MBP), just 'cause I'm a pessimist. Rick On Tue, Feb 20, 2018 at 9:12 AM, P. J. Allingwrote: > Sounds like a hardware failure. Re: GESO: Cheetahs
It is amazing how well that camouflage hides the cat in the 2nd photo. The legs and the tail seem to disappear. Gorgeous animals! Wonderful catch! After looking at your photos and reading your story, I thought that "exotic" is very relative. In our neighborhood we frequently get deers roaming along and across the road. In my very urban childhood, that would've been rather exotic. Igor Alan C Tue, 20 Feb 2018 05:52:42 -0800 wrote: Today, a grey day, we went to Letaba for brunch. There has been some rain but the grass hasn't grown much yet. https://www.flickr.com/photos/wisselstroom/40380343181/ K5 with the Sigma 170-500 DG Alan C --- This email has been checked for viruses by Avast antivirus software. https://www.avast.com/antivirus -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions.
Mac help needed!
Herewith the tale of my "AAARG" yesterday: Setup: Mac Mini running Lightroom 6 and Firefox as the only non-Apple software, OS 10.11. Lightroom catalogs are on the internal HD, the photos are on an external HD, and there is a Time Machine backup of the whole thing on a second external HD (all spinny). History: Sunday night I was working on some photos that I hope to submit for The Book, when the system bogged down tremendously—as in running at slide-rule-and-Morse-code speed. Quitting LR and re-launching didn’t help; rebooting was s-l-o-w and didn’t help either. I ran Disk Utility on the photo drive, and got a message saying there was a problem it couldn’t fix. The backup drive icon showed up but wouldn’t open. Many experiments and sleep deprivation ensued. Yesterday morning the drives didn’t even show appear on the desktop. Last evening, I ran Disk Utility from the CDs that came with my Mac Mini (it’s not new!), and it now boots at normal speed. However, it does not react at all to having external drives plugged in—they don’t show up on the desktop, even though About This Mac System Information/Hardware/Firewire shows that they're connected. Two external drives are now connected to my MBP, and are working normally. The photo drive shows up on my MBP, but won't open, and Disk Utility tells me (in red) that it can't be un-mounted in order to be repaired. What’s going on? What can I do about it? Re: GESO: My favorites - 2017
You have a fine eye for architecture and cityscapes, Stan. I love the HCB moment from Meg, but my fave is the calico cat and the urn. :) On Mon, Feb 19, 2018 at 11:16 PM, Stanley Halpinwrote: > Excluding the three images I’ll be submitting to Mark tomorrow, these are my > favorites of my own photography for the year.
