Henk, I like yours and others much more than my own, but glad you like
it .. I didn't translate the colors well into the digital file, but was
grateful the gull posed for me back then.  I scanned that one a long
time ago and my fiddling in photoshop made it worse but I didn't notice

until I saw it on PUG.

Yes, Bill's shot of  the "flying rats" going by in the water is fun, not
just his wry description.

Another very fine gallery! With the flooding recently in Australia I did wonder
if the gallery would appear waterlogged, but Brian managed to keep it dry.

Thanks Dan for your comment.

My own favorites this month are Rick’s Chicago, Henk’s fine composition of a
rural scene, and another of Ralf’s always interesting industrial scene.

Re: July PUG is up

2022-07-09 Thread Daniel J. Matyola
Very nice gallery this month!
Thanks for putting it together again, Brian.

The entries by Ralph and Ann were immediately identifiable; both
exhibiting their well developed styles and choice of subjects. Ann's
subject is Union Square, but it contains beautiful views of the Empire
State Building and the MetLife Tower as well.

I like the aircraft image by Alan and John, nas well as the view from
aircraft by Henk, Brian, John, and Toine. Bruce's minimalism is quite
impressive and has a great mood.

My favorite of the month, however, is Stan's Ice Floe. I just love the
geometry, the revealed textures, the subdued color of the sea, and the
composition.

Lots of fun in this gallery all around.

Thanks, Henk and Ann.

Sadly, those days are gone. Or perhaps luckily for the people living
there who are no longer inhaling half the periodic system with every
breath they take.

The blast furnaces and the coking plant have all been closed, a few
years ago, and are now being demolished. Soon, my photos will be all
that remains.

On Mon, Jul 05, 2021 at 12:52:13PM -0400, Daniel J. Matyola"

I went to Bruce Nagel's website, to try to discover what and where
BHN0002 is, but he is as mysterious there as in his PUG entry.

I could tell you, but then I would just have to have you killed. ;-)

It is an abandoned zinc smelting plant in eastern PA. One of these days
I need to see if I can get permission to get a close look, as I think the

Re: July PUG is up

2021-07-09 Thread Bill

Thanks Paul, Stan and Daniel for liking my picture this month.

It wasn't the picture I wanted, but it was the picture I got. I had
wanted to be on the other side of the building and do a hopefully not
too cliched sunset shot.

Unfortunately, there had been a whole bunch of rain in the few days
prior, and when I drove onto what passes as an approach road (read dirt
path), my truck bogged down and started to sink. Deciding that
discretion is the better part of valor, I backed out before the truck
got totally swallowed and drove back to the highway to hopefully find a
view that worked.

I hadn't taken my really long lens kit with me, as my intended picture
would have required a wide angle. Consequently, even the 70-210 was
really too short, as the structure is quite far off the highway. I could
probably have used my 600mm lens for that picture.

Being the dumb dumb that I am, I left the back door of the truck ajar
while shooting the picture, and the cab filled up with mosquitoes, so I
spent the hour and a quarter drive home fending off the little
bloodsuckers..

When I opened the file in Camera Raw, I processed it using the new
Enhance tool, taking the file up to 144mp and then did a fairly deep crop.

I think, all things considered, that it worked out fairly well.

thanks again

Mike -- I read this after I posted my plaudits for the whole gallery..
but I think I can answer the "where" - with a guess,
I'm guessing Pennsylvania as the where.  Taken from a train window or at
a rail station.
if not Pennsylvania, then not far from it in another north eastern
state in the USA.

Scenes like this are familiar to me in person and always evoke these
lines of Vachel Lindsey's

"Factory windows are always broken
Something or other is going wrong
Something is rotten, I think,  in Denmark
End of the factory workers song."

Re: July PUG is up

2017-07-05 Thread Marnie (aka Doe)

Very nice PUG. I am very fond of trees and leaves.

Everyone has mentioned Hosta, very graphic.

I would like to mention some others. David Mann's Frost, proving simpler
is often better. Jan Van Wijk's Victoria Amazonia is sort of startling,
never seen leaves like that. At first I thought they were big
caterpillars, very unusual. Not Quite Grown by Paul Sorenson, great
lightening and framing. Leaves really jump out. And Lisbon by Rick
Womer. I like how it was taken really close up. Holes were intriguing --
I kept thinking I might see something through them (city scene, skyline,
some eyes looking, something). Heh.

One one of the advantages of coming back to PDML is looking at the
monthly PUG. Thanks, folks.

2017-07-05 Thread Stanley Halpin
I was going to do a leaving image but other events interceded. It was one of
those “God willing and the creek don’t rise” commitments to self. And then the
creek rose. 26 inches of muddy water in my garage. Clean up coming along, I
keep thinking that the end is in sight but then finding something else that
needs to be cleaned or discarded and replaced. The light at the end of the
tunnel is a train coming in my direction…

But I did take time to look through the very impressive collection of leaf
images.

Lots to like indeed.

I love the quiet simplicity in so many of these. Frost on leaves is a
fave of mine, so David Mann;'s and Henk's especially appeal to me. I'm
a sucker for the textures in Hosta, so I really appreciated Bill
Robb's image. A 27 image stack of K-1 shots must have been a monster
to process! :)

Fine work all around.

line up so nicely?

Ann's made me laugh--a good way to start!

Matthew's, Jack's, Brian's, and Igor's contributions we also favorites.

What a great gallery!

Well, I agree with everyone's mentioned favorites. I might add Igor's

As to Americana like any good nature photographer I leave the
landscape untouched as I find it. But dumb luck and accidental timing,
often saves me. Thanks for the mention, Darren.

Thanks Brian and Jack for the mention of If These Walls Could Talk.
I agree that is an excellent gallery.
I especially appreciated Joseph Tainters A Peek at Petra, Brian
Walter's Jumble, Rick Womer's Courtauld Vertigo, and Dario
Bonazza's Gulia's Shades.

I also appreciated the well-seen and captured geometries in Don
Guthrie's Americana and I have to ask Don if he went up and pulled
down the window shades to that perfection.:)

Brian has made some good points, I wouldn't think my best (not work,

2 rolls of film to get one keeper. Even so I consider it a lucky shot.
Maybe I need to help that luck a bit:)

What matters is you knew which one was the keeper... it's a very lovely

I also particularly liked Bruce's because it is much more to my taste

other shots are mostly taken in transit, from home to work, to
shopping, to friends and back.

July PUG - Now Up!

2014-07-08 Thread Brian Walters

G'day all

Well this one didn't disappoint - a wide range of genres and styles.

The interesting thing is that there are no images created with recent
camera models - no K-3s, no K-5s, no K-7s. Not even a K20D. The most
recent model is a lone K200D.

Does this mean that our best work is behind us? How depressing...

Or maybe it just takes time for recent images to become memorable.

Anyway, the most images were taken with the venerable *ist D (5), just
ahead of the K10D. Eight were taken with film cameras, the oldest
being the SV.

As usual, you'll find the gallery here:

Wow, what a great gallery!

My favorites are Bruce Walker's Pictures at a Demolition, Matthew Hunt's
Dock in Winter Fog,, Jack Davis's Big Creek Bridge (lovely interplay of the
shapes), and Pat Temmerman's Blue Horizon (loved my own Optio Mini, until it
was stolen).

Well done one and all!
