Re: Pentax HD Pentax-DA 55-300mm f/4-5.8 ED WR Lens - recommended?
Thanks for that, Jens. I recently did a similar test between the HD 55-300 FA 100-300. At f8 there is virtually no difference but wide open, the HD is considerably better than the FA. I think you will find something similar between the HD 55-300 DA 60-250 if you repeat the experiment at f5.6. Of course, the 60-250 is still very sharp at f4 and by far the best lens if you can afford it. Paul Stenquist's bird shots even with the 1.4x TC are quite impressive. I use an F7 and with the FA 100-300 handheld I need to work at f8/ISO800 but with the HD 55-300 I will hopefully be able to work at f5.8/ISO400. Unfortunately the K7's sensor is rather noisy from ISO800 upwards. BTW, what is the location of your test shots? Looks like fish trap supports in a river estuary. The acquisition of this lens, if recommended, would allow me to sell on three more lenses which cover portions of this range. I would rather have a very small handful of lenses I use frequently, than some that get used twice a year. I'm also aware that my next camera will have a full frame sensor and no doubt, I'll be wanting to buy new lenses for that. So, are folk here who have this lens happy with it? I do not think I may sell it even though I have too many lenses already. Thanks. Most of my lens - certainly all I intend to replace - are of a good age. It seems that getting this is a good move, so I'll do something about it. Its not unusual to go through 2-3 copies before you find a good one and a good one is worth finding. Thanks. I intend to buy new and locally, so if I do get a poor example, it won't be my problem. I'm seriously fed up with this weather. I know how you feel. My Sachtler Video 18 holds up well in the wind but the problem is using the end of the bottle - the wind slaps and pulls at the setup and makes it difficult to get a steady shot. My sister and brother in law are sleeping in a caravan while they build their new house on the Isle of Coll, Inner Hebrides. There is no other island westwards of Coll so they've been taking the full brunt of the storms. Numerous lightning strikes have fries modems and part of the power grid, and the caravan is literally tied down. -- Cheers, Cotty ___/\__Broadcast, Corporate, || (O) |Web Video Production --www.seeingeye.tv _ -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions.

I'll have one of these lenses in my hand within the next two weeks, and I'll now be able to sell on three more. Thanks for the replies. As for the wind, I'm hoping that the modifications I made to the fence panels after the storm last year hold! All I can hear is them rattling away at night and I can't imagine using a tripod in these gusts at all.
