Oh, hold on... I think there's still the old custom-convert.conf in place
which introduced mplayer conversion for apple lossless. Would be useless
(or even breaking) now.
If you removed the custom-convert file from the squeezebox folder, would it
work right away, even with mplayer in place?
Put back mplayer. Had to run slimnas-install.sh command again. Removed
custome-convert.conf and restarted slimserver. Apple lossless files
won't play. Noticed everytime I restart slimserver constom-convert.conf
is restored to original file. Had a look at slimnas.tgz - Sox not
included.
Hope this
I updated SlimNAS to 1.4.99f. Please give it another try. It should fix the
sox/custom-convert.con issue.

Ah thought the new slimnas was downloading to quick. For some reason
using instead of downloading a fresh copy Windows 7 was just making a
copy of the previous download. Anyway downloaded slimnas v1.4.99f on
another PC and installed. Now finding sox and appears to be streaming -
but doesn't.
Found a way around the apple lossess problem. By removing mplayer from
the slimnas\usr\bin folder and restarting slimserver it's forced to use
alac to convert to pcm. Which is OK. When I try to play 24/96 flac files
using sox i get the following error.
