My BBC streams are AAC or HLS/AAC. I will be revisiting that at some
point.
With flc, pcm, MP3 a FLAC plays as PCM. The log tells me as much but
no I haven't kept a log extract of that this far. I will be doing more
testing over the coming days

Try sudo chmod 755 /dev/cdrom. It could be a problem of permissions.

I didn't quite explain why BBC Spotify don't work with flc, MP3. The
Onkyo reports the Spotify stream as FLAC 16/44.1 but doesn't output
anything. I don't think LMS can transcode from Ogg Vorbis to FLAC. BBC
streams are mixed depending on whether its live or on demand and both
crash the Onkyo
