[PEDA] Signal integrity analysis

2003-11-05 Thread Dave . Watling
Hi all,
I am a signal integrity analysis virgin until today. However, it occurred
to me that the software must generate a spice netlist which represents the
PCB area of interest. Our IC designers could really do with this, so they
can add it to their simulations. Does anyone know how I can get this spice
netlist information out of Protel? Perhaps there is something I could
access through writing a macro...?

Any ideas?

[PEDA] Keepouts

2003-10-07 Thread Dave . Watling
Hi,
I wish to prevent a polygon from pouring in a certain area. I have used a
fill as a keepout on that layer, but I then get DRC errors showing shorts
where I have put the fill over tracks. I also get DRC clearance errors
where the fill is under a component. Is there a neater way of doing this
so it comes up DRC clean?

I would definitely try running Regclean to clean up your windows registry -
seems to alleviate most random crashing. You can find it using an internet

anything
much other than cosmetic and workaround change as the main sunject

problem is with the Nvidia's graphic engine.

sorry Dave -never mind
i was on a different machine and security was on high
it works now

as a feeble defense i had checked that briefly but on the first machine
it was
Excel XP or something newer than this machine which is Excel 2000
They put the security level setting in different places in the 2
versions

for the unlearned in 2000 it is on Tools Macro
and in XP it is on a tab in Tools/Options

anyway Dave thanks a ton
this is a terrific utility

there is one little bug still (at least for me)
if you drag the window with the option settings around it leaves a
series of ghosts behind itself
doesn't matter much really

this is really going to save a lot of time
i used to use the protel format (to get the grouping and count)
then basically junk all the designator that wrapped to the next line
import to excel and then pump them back it
it really sucked compared to this

so when do you release the bag label macro ? :)

Re: [PEDA] BOM sorter version 6 now!

2003-06-27 Thread Dave . Watling

Hi Dennis,
I have looked at your suggestions, and I have made 1 change to the program,
so it now always puts in the hyphen for consecutive designator numbers,
whilst stripping similar prefixes. The other suggestions are noted, but I
will have to put them on the back-burner for now. Your comment about the
'unformatted' option is noted, but all I've written there is a 'dumb' bit
of code that simply looks at similar Part Types and Footprints, and tots
them up without even looking at the designators. It's probably just a
matter of preference, so I've written what I prefer! The code is unlocked,
so anyone can play with it and perhaps come up with some better ideas.

Version 6 now available at:

i had a quick look
nice!

not to look a gift horse in the mouth but ...

re 'Sort without formatting'
the only difference i notice is that the designator prefix
character is not stripped for items after the first

this is my preferred appearance
R1 R5 R6 or R1,R5,R6 as opposed to R1,5,6

but using the unformatted method the designators are not properly
sorted!

i know it is a pain in the butt to do that sort of a sort,
but i have done it in the distant past including an optional 'crunch'
R1 R32 R33 R34 R35 R72 would crunch to
R1 R32-R35 R72

another minor thought
it might be nice to have an option to not use commas to separate the
designators

we use a downstream process which requires the commaa to be stripped

[PEDA] Attachments (BOM sorter)

2003-06-26 Thread Dave . Watling

Hi Abd,

If you look back at the first e-mail I sent on this subject, I believed it
was going to be rejected, so I asked people to e-mail me directly.

I think the attachment rejection still works on attachments greater then a
certain size, since an example file I sent got rejected before I zipped it.
I presumed at the time that the main reason for rejecting attachments was
because of the large size of Protel databases which would be bounced around
the world to everyone.

I didn't know I needed permission to send attachments, and presuably no-one
else did, as no-one else mentioned it.

Lastly, I think it was a bit strong chastising me for merely exposing a
weakness.

David Watling

While the intention to provide a utility to Protel users is appreciated, it

is very bad form to send any attachments to a mailing list without
permission. At one time this list was set to reject attachments, it appears

that this has been lost. This is a serious security issue.

A number of us have write access to a Protel user filespace that has been
used for this kind of purpose. I've been rather buried lately but I'm sure
that there is someone here who would post the files. However, to access the

filespace, as I recall, you must be a member of
[EMAIL PROTECTED] and accept a yahoo cookie for the session. I
think that if you join the list and register with yahoo you may be able to
upload the files yourself.

As to why the access is limited to list members, the decision was made
because the yahoo user agreement in effect provides that material which is
accessible to the general public has thereby been placed in the public
domain. On the one hand, this might be an argument against using yahoo for
the user lists, on the other hand, there are many benefits. In any case,
decisions like this rest with the Association,
[EMAIL PROTECTED]

(You can join these lists by sending a piece of mail to, for example,
[EMAIL PROTECTED] In that case you can subscribe and
read the lists by regular email without accepting yahoo cookies if that
concerns you.)

The protel-users family of lists on yahoogroups.com is generally set for
moderator approval of membership because of bad experience with spammers.
The approval, for anyone who is actually interested in Protel, is merely a
formality.

I do recommend joining [EMAIL PROTECTED] if you are at all
involved with Protel. This is primarily a backup list for the Forum, which
you are now reading. If you have an urgent question that pops up
unexpectedly, and the Forum seems to be down, you can then ask it there
without having to wait for moderator approval of your membership. That list

is also open to non-emergency posts regarding Protel issues, but please,
except in an emergency, do not post the same message or question to both
lists. Either list generally works for getting good support, but the Forum
list is larger and includes nearly everyone who is subscribed to the
yahoogroups list. The yahoogroups list does, however, count among its
members nearly every major writer for the Forum list.

(The protel-users list will not add significantly, under present
conditions, to your mail load)

Hi Brad,
I would suggest you have your macro security set to 'high' in Excel. This
will disable any loaded macros, without any prompts. Set your macro
security to 'medium' (if you trust me!) This is found in
Tools-Macro-Security

I tried it as well after seeing your message.
I opened BOM Sort.XLS, saw the BOM Sort toolbar, opened a CSV
BOM, clicked BOM SORT and got an error message stating The macro BOM
sorter.xls'!BOM_sort_with_Format' cannot be found. The funny thing is that
both macros appear in the list when you check the macros.

All I get out of it is run time error 13 type mismatch.

Is the procedure just open file, load csv and go?

 Best Regards

[PEDA] BOM sorter version 2 - please overwrite the original

2003-06-23 Thread Dave . Watling

Hi again Brad all,
Try running it on a 'Client spreadsheet' BOM. It will definitely not work
on a Protel BOM.
It was looping until Part Type was empty, so if any Part types were empty,
it stopped there. I have corrected this, so it now checks the first two
columns.
I don't know what this run time error 13 is - could someone send me a BOM
which displays this error?
I will write a read.me file soon, as I seem to be getting some interest. I
now know how the guys at Protel feel when users start reporting bugs!

(See attached file: BOM sorter.xls)

David Watling

Well I got the macros to be recognized, had to change the macro security
level. Now I have it adding a Qty header and it seems to format the
column widths but nothing else happens.

 To Dave Watling,
Dave, I think that your excel wooksheet needs at least a small
readme file. It is not as simple as one might think it could be. Can you
give us the BOM format, number of columns, headers or no headers, anything
else that we might not inherently know.

While playing, it did combine two designators onto one line
but listed the quantity still as 1. That is as far it would go, just one
line and it was in error because it should have had a quantity of 2. It
also doesn't seem to handle rows where the first column is blank. And I
have now seen the runtime error 13 a number of times as well.

Sincerely,
Brad Velander.

[PEDA] BOM sorter

2003-06-20 Thread Dave . Watling
Hi all,
If you've ever pulled your hair out because you can't get a sensible BOM
into Excel, for the purpose of ordering parts and assembling PCBs, then I
may have the answer. I've written a single click BOM sorter in Excel 2000
VBA, to sort the 'CSV' or 'Client spreadsheet' BOMs into a sensible format,
with all similar components on the same row. I'll attempt to attach it
here, but it will probably be blocked. However, if you are interested,
just send me an e-mail at:
[EMAIL PROTECTED]

(See attached file: BOM sorter.xls)

The code is unlocked, so you can play with it. Please note: it doesn't run
under Excel97.

David Watling
